At the Monday Night Café...

... you can talk about whatever you like.

(And please allow me to remind you that it might be a good time to use the Althouse Portal to do your Amazon shopping. The link is always there in the banner and in the sidebar, for your convenience.)

Christmas shopping has been over for a couple weeks already. IIRC, you two know what has been purchased so if you’re wondering who bought the White Tea Aloe shampoo and the water softener cleanser, that was me.

Merry Christmas you two honeymooners.

(N. B., that was non-Christmas shopping.

An early Meadehouse innovation was to have posts that described some of the things people were buying w/ the Amazon thing-y. (You, in these threads, go way back before that.)

So yes, they do see what is purchased. But, they've decided to be more discrete now. They also stopped making a particular claim re use the portal that I often needed to correct.

Anywho, those extra-extra big condemns were for me.

I have no trouble believing that anti-de Sitter space bought extra-extra big condemns.

Has anybody had a drone delivery from Amazon yet? do they ring the doorbell and run off? Knock on the door? Hover by the window? Have a synthetic voice calling out "Package from Amazon", like the voices in the Mike Nichols-Elaine May telephone skit?

What about their store where ya don't go through a checkout process? Is that even open to everyone?

On the weekend I was in a Seattle house, but I'm mostly in outskirts. And, I'm not really a provisional shopper.

Even so, for the novelty, I'd try it out.

David Brock, who runs a network of Democratic groups helping Clinton’s campaign, wrote on Twitter that he would foot the bill. “If a $5 million ‘leak fee’ is what stands between truth and total #Trump implosion, sign me up,” he tweeted. Almost a quarter of a million saw the 'try it out' link that I posted upthread.

And, that doesn't count the dozen (or so) times that that video has been viewed on other YMH episodes. And, this episode and the others were also heard as much (or more) on audio podcasts, rather than viewed on youtube.

Anywho, that's something.

Darrell,

I am referring to the vulgar guy and his wife.

Also, my F-ed grammer at 9:12 didn't correctly express that there have been a dozen or so episodes of YMH that have shown this clip. Each of those and the associated audio versions have hundreds of thousands of views/listens.

After the first of the year, I intend to put a couple bookcases in this bedroom, and maybe one or two in the loft. We have an American Furniture Warehouse, a Denver based furniture chain with huge showrooms, is just A mile from here. We cant finish the loft until I get the books stacked on the floor off it. That leaves tge parlor off her bedroom. Goal is mid January, to say that it took two years to move into the new house. Something that normal people do in a couple weeks.

Talking bookcases, I took a different approach for my extensive science fiction/fantasy collection in the garage. I started with 13 9' shelves (121 linear feet). I installed 5 pairs of 4 1/2" vertical brackets to the studs in a corner of the garage by the garage door. I had 13 pieces of 12' of maybe 6-7" molding cut down to 9' (luckily saving the 3' remainders). Painted the 13 9' shelves to match the walls. Installed 5 horizontal brackets per shelf into the 5 vertical bracket sets, and then installed the 13 shelves. Took a half a week to sort and install the bulk of my collection. Was able to shelf D-Z. Still had A-C, but it turns out that the 3' remainders from the 12' pieces just fit between the garage door and the wall with the shelves. So, 2 more pair of 4 1/5' vertical brackets, and 26 horizontal ones, paint the remainders, and we were (temporarily) done. I could squeeze A-C into the new shelves. Except that with misc additions, I had a stack on the floor, and nowhere to put them. Turns out though that there was an 8' section of the wall next to the 9' section that was recessed a couple inches. I had installed a 6' heavy metal shelving unit there already, leaving 2'. Turns out that Home Depot has 2' shelves (they don't have 9' ones). So last week, with the fake Christmas tree out of that 2' section of wall (no, we haven't actually put it up yet - I just moved it), I installed two more pairs of 4 1/2' vertical brackets, and am filling in the horizontal brackets and 2' shelves, as I find them at Home Depot. Tonight, I finished a bit over half. I think that I still need 5 shelves and 8 horizontal brackets. My partner will, no doubt, complain that the new shelves are the wrong color of white, but won't be that noticeable to normal people who weren't interior designers at some point in their lives, esp after I get the fake Christmas trees and life sized nutcracker back into that location, mostly in front of tge new shelves. I think that works out to 174 linear feet of book shelving. It wasn't that hard, and everything except the 13 12' molding strips is made by Rubbermaid and available at both HD and Lowes.

So, I am writing that long description about putting up bookshelves, and the kitten wants attention. He wants to attack my wrists with his mouth, grab with his forelimbs, and kick with his back legs. Normally fine, as long as I have gloves on and my shirt pulled down over the top of the gloves so he can't get bare skin. My partner hates gloves, and her hands are pretty scarred up right now. I, on the other hand, carry leather gloves at all time, and wear them to bed at night for just such situations. Except that I can't type with gloves on, because iPad screens are actually heat sensitive. So, this time, I was hiding my hands under the covers to keep them safe, as I tried to type. The only skin he could find of mine then was my face, and figured that if he couldn't do his thing on my wrists, he might be able to do it on my lips. Bad idea. Before he knew it, he had bounced off the bed, through his litter box, and onto his water and food on the floor by the bed. So, it took maybe 15 minutes to appease him, letting him know that, yes, I still loved him, etc. New water and fresh food, and he was purring up a storm. I just can't mention this to my partner who thinks that I almost killed him the last time something like this happened. She was never good at setting limits with her human kids, and this feline one isn't much better, which is why her hands are cut up messes right now, and mine aren't (plus, of course, the gloves she refuses to wear).

I hadn't realized how bad her hands were until we went ring shopping last Saturday (she had had the previous two rings from me stolen). And trying on rings, it was pretty obvious. I should have realized it from the number of band aids and hydrogen peroxide bottles I had been buying.

Back to the cat. He is getting more aggressive as he matures. We are looking forward to when we can get him fixed. The vet here in PHX doesn't want to neuter him until about six months of age, if she can help it, which is about the end of January. My partner doesn't trust this vet, so wants to wait until we get back up to MT in maybe April, because she trusts that vet. I don't think that is realistic. Since I have him enrolled in kitten plans with both vets, I have effectively paid to have him fixed twice, so money isn't the issue. Rather, it is his increasing aggression, and, apparently the smell when he starts marking his territory. Talked cats (and Christmas) with my next brother tonight on the phone. He usually has two cats, and they tend to be males. Lost one a couple months ago, and tge survivor seems to miss him. All except for one of his males were fixed before they started to spray. This vet likes to wait as long as she can, in order to get full urethra development. He hasn't had any problems that he knows about over tge last half dozen male cats. We shall see.

A work colleague, while musing, half complaining, about how much stuff his wife buys on line (I did not ask how much at Amazon through the Althouse link) said that his biggest worry this holiday season was Porch Pirates. I'd never heard of such a thing but apparently they are real. Not a threat where I live, which is a rather rural suburb of Boston. Must be softer targets in closer to the city, with porches close to the street.

Years ago, I inherited an antique barrister bookcase from my late aunt. It's a beautiful piece of furniture. Antique oak with sliding glass doors. Since that time, I have started to collect them. Have four of them now.

Over the years years, the price has not changed much. A four section barrister in good shape sells for about $100-125/section. If you have shop around and are willing to negotiate, they can be had for less. Stay away from high population centers though, they have crazy prices there.

I am struggling mightily with the fact the Dems and some R's are in complete denial over Mueller's coup. This will not end well for our country.

antique barrister bookcase

I've got my grandfather's that my father repaired and refinished, though my brother actually inherited it from our mother. The doors used to get stuck in the wrong position and you had to pull the whole thing apart to open it. It's nice to have doors because I can't seem to plug the lint leak in my dryer.

Hopefully, more of the young idiots will appreciate antique stuff when they get older. There are noticeably fewer antique shops on the way to my brother's in CT. Town used to be full of them.

Probably not.

Meanwhile, conservatards respond to conservative wrongthinkers being denied access to established financial networks by (predictably) angrily castigating *conservatives* for impiety toward Muh Private Enterprise, which must be allowed to discriminate as it chooses.

This after decades of approving the gummint's criminalizing private company discrimination against people that goodthinkers don't think you should be allowed to discriminate against.

I am building shelves to go on top of my bookcases.. It requires staining and varnishing to match the original. The varnishing part has been a roadblock. I have never varnished anything before and it has taken months of experimenting with different products and working on my technique to get a smooth, bubble-free result but I thing I've finally got it. I do the real thing soon! Want it done before New Years.
