Deconstructing Comey's weasely spin before Congress on the FISA Warrants:

DC Chuch Ross:

COMEY: DOSSIER WAS UNVERIFIED BEFORE AND AFTER FBI USED IT TO OBTAIN SPY WARRANTS

"Former FBI Director James Comey told Congress that the Steele dossier was unverified when it was used to apply for spy warrants against former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page."

"...The former FBI chief signed off on three out of four spy warrants granted against Page."

'...According to a transcript of Comey’s testimony [before Congress] released [last] Saturday, the former FBI chief also asserted that it was “not necessary” for the FBI to assess the sources that dossier author Christopher Steele used to compile his report, which was funded by the Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaign.

[Comey:]

“I think I’ve dealt with warrants where you just identify that your primary [confidential informant], or primary source, has subsources, and so long as the court is aware of that phenomenon and that you’re speaking to the reliability of the primary source, to my mind, that’s a totally legit warrant application,” he said.'

https://dailycaller.com/2018/12/09/comey-fbi-unverified-dossier/

WAPO: The British spy behind the Trump dossier helped the FBI bust FIFA

"...[After Steele "had been hired in 2009 by England’s Football Association to investigate allegations of corruption by FIFA"] In 2010, Steele helped deliver information about FIFA to the FBI that eventually led to indictments of many current and former officials of the soccer governing body [headquarters in Switzerland], as well as the ouster of longtime FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/early-lead/wp/2017/01/13/the-british-spy-behind-the-trump-dossier-helped-the-fbi-bust-fifa/

This fig leaf does not cover the FBI's big problem. That Steele's report was compiled from anonymous Russian sub-subsources of the unknown paid Russian subsources to whom FBI source Steele had farmed out collection of the unverified material in the Dossier. Since Steele has refused to identify his sources and didn't know the names of the subsources, it has been impossible to verify the credibility of the Dossier (except to show that at least some of its information (Michael Cohen's visit to Prague) was demonstrably false.

Helping the FBI bust FIFA doesn't elevate Steele's credibility as a source for a FISA warrant to electronically surveil Carter Page.

Saint Comey is a weasel. But we knew that already.

narciso said...

According to appelbaum (that clever Israeli data miner, Steele did no original work for the fifa case either.

I have been trying to figure out the Flynn thing. If I understand this correctly, the FBI, having surreptitiously recorded General Flynn, an official in the new Trump administration, talking with some Russian, tricked him into agreeing to meet with two agents without a lawyer present, to see if they could get him to lie about it.

Now, whether he lied or not, I don't know. Andy McCarthy thinks he did, but his reasons strike me as naive. He thinks the system works, 'cause he has been part of the system for most of his life. He imagines that a thing like Comey is ethical. Like I say, naive. But setting that to one side, what possible justification could there be for the FBI to assign two agents to creating an opportunity for a member of the new administration to lie to them about a non-criminal matter about which they were already fully informed? And why should anyone in the Trump administration ever agree to talk to any of them again?

The absurdity is that Dems seem to automatically agree that corporate rates should be restored to their former high rates, in order to subsidize restoring the unlimited SALT deduction - that very, very few of them can utilize. Almost the only people countrywide that benefited from the unlimited SALT deductions were the extremely wealthy living on either coast. But I know good friends who have minimal SALT deductions that preach this as gospel. They are told by their leadership (who benefit from the unlimited deduction) that limiting it was evil, and so that is what they believe, even if it means less money in their pockets. Sheeple, despite their prestigious graduate degrees.

Except as a young lad, wandering through apple orchards looking to steal an apple (too early in the growing season), I have never experienced an unripe apple (Those that I did, I regarded as small apples and ate them anyway without a problem). Do grocery stores and fruit & vegetable stands even carry unripe apples? (Or is it unripened?) Fun fact: you can use an apple to ripen other young fruit. And if you do receive some unripe apples as a gift, is it okay to regift them, presumably after they've ripened? Is that okay, hostess?

Thanks for the idea and recipe, though. Love me some apple pie.

Actually, we probably do know the source of at least some of Steele's allegations, and the big reason that they aren't going to fess up, is that they, as well as tge FBI, likely committed federal felonies along the way. What we do know, from redacted FISC opinions, is that FISA Title VII database searching by unsupervised contractors for no identified national security reasons was rampant in the first 4-5 months of 2016. Title VII involves searching electronic records of US citizens and legal resident aliens in the US without a warrant for identified tnational security reasons. And then the queries were apparently unmasked by the Obama White House, much of which was done by UN Ambassador Samantha Powers, who had no role requiring any unmasking. The smoking gun there, of course, was the claim that Michael Cohen had gone to Prague. Wrong Michael Cohen, and about the only way that anyone could have gotten that information was using "about" queries of databases containing Immigration And Customs information. The "about" queries terminated by NSA Dir Adm Rogers in May, 2016.

What is scary is that the Obama White House, Lynch/Yates DoJ, and Comey FBI, working together committed industrial level 4th Amdt violations there, by surveiling US citizens without the Constitutionally required warrants. FISA Title VII was added by the PATRIOT Act after 9/11 to prevent terrorist attacks. Significant safeguards were put in place to protect the Constitutional rights of US citizens. The chilling thing is that it was enacted under GW Bush, and the safeguards blown up by the next Administration. And no one is probably going to jail for doing so.

The Federalist posted the original request to the FEC against Crooked Hillary, her various committees, 40 state parties, and the DNC. The FEC did nothing with the complaint, which had page after page of spreadsheets showing the blatant campaign finance violations, since 4 of 6 commissioners are required to open investigations, and Senate Dems have refused to name a Dem replacement, so there are only 4 sitting members (commissioners are appointed in pairs, one for each party)). Since nothing was done with the complaint, the law provides that the FEC can be sued in the DC Federal District Court. This was done in April, 2018 (Committee to Defend the President v. FEC alleges failure to act on administrative complaint (D.D.C. 1:18-cv-00888-RDM). Latest action was a response by the plaintiff to the FEC's motion to dismiss for, I believe, lack of standing, in maybe July. Of course, that is the problem - who would have standing to sue for campaign finance violations? In any case, in their page after page of spreadsheets, they have documented over $84 million dollars in illegal contributions that ended up being spent on the Clinton campaign. And, if the FEC wins here, and gets the suit dismissed, Crooked Hillary and the Dems will likely have gotten away with illegally funneling almost $100 million from super donors to her campaign - in many cases almost $1/2 million per donor.

I like Roz Chast's work very much. As a former New Yorker I enjoyed "Going into Town" very much, but so far her greatest achievement is "Can's We Talk About Something More Pleasant?"
