"Why Democrats Should Not Call the Georgia Governor’s Race 'Stolen'/There are three important reasons to cool this rhetoric..."

"... despite Brian Kemp’s odious voter suppression efforts," cautions lawprof Richard Hasen (at Slate). The 3 reasons:
First, rhetoric about stolen elections feeds a growing cycle of mistrust and delegitimization of the election process, an attack pushed by President Trump and other Republicans who have been yelling “voter fraud” every time they are behind in the count. I’ve already set out my fear that Trump could refuse to concede the 2020 presidential election if he is ahead in the count on election night and then ballot counts inevitably shift toward Democrats as the counting continues....

Second... Saying Kemp tried to suppress Democratic votes and saying the election was stolen are two different things, and making charges of a stolen election when it cannot be proved undermines Democrats’ complaints about suppressive tactics. If Democrats can’t prove it, some people will think the suppression is no big deal when it really is....

[Third] It focuses attention on the wrong question: whether there was enough suppression to change election outcomes....
ADDED: Let me expand on Hasen's first point: Fomenting cynicism about elections might hurt Democrats more than Republicans. Democrats are the ones who need to mobilize more of the people who are inclined to sit things out, and the idea that the everything's fake and rigged isn't going to motivate people to participate.

Inevitably? How do normal and untainted recounts “inevitably” shift ballot counts toward Democrats?

His fear is that Trump won’t go along with the usual bullshit.

1) somehow get close enough, that the demoncrat vote is within the margin of fraud
2) during tabulation and reporting (AFTER tabulation and reporting) 'find' more votes in car trunks

5) PROFIT!!!!

Okay, I understand that it's coming via Slate, but is Kemp saying that conjuring up fantasies about Trump and Putin collusion to steal a presidential election, then initiating a years long inquisition to keep the fantasy alive while harassing the legitimate administration every step along the way serves to foster trust in the election process? Is an "election delegitimazation bullshit" tag in order?

And what Humperdink said. Bush Gore is when it finally got real. Republicans finally grew a set and pushed back. That shocked the Democrats to their core. I still remember the looks on their faces when the Republicans insisted on participating in the recount process - and backed it up with action.

Interesting you should begin the day with this article. I had just read another piece in which some pundit at Mother Jones ran down the list of the allegations against Kemp (closing polling places, purging voter roles etc.) but no specifics of how and when such actions may have taken place. I thought maybe this cool headed dude would provide that background but he only serves to keep the allegations out there as if they were proven fact.

Anyone seen an actual reliable source reviewing what it is that Kemp actually did as Secretary of State to sway the election in his favor, rather than these lists of supposed events that are discussed as received wisdom?

That's how they gitcha.

In PA, if do not vote over a two year period, you are dropped from the voter rolls. Egad!*?!&!, you've been purged. Most people know that. I suspect brain-dead people on the left do not.

Personal story: In October of 1976, the spouse and I buy a house and moved in. The new abode was within the same county, but was in new township. A couple of weeks later, on election day, I walk across the street to the elementary school to vote, voter registration card in hand.

They wouldn't let me vote. I was not on the rolls in the new location (ie precinct). They called the judge on the spot. He still said no, I had to re-register 30 days prior to election, which was impossible due to the timing. Valuable lesson.

No, Althouse, let ME expand on Hasen’s point. One side is both cynical about elections AND boasts of its cheating, going back to the election of 1960, and earlier. So by all means let us investigate and by all means let us take common sense step to assure that only legal voters can vote and that legal, but only legal votes are counted.

From what I understand Kemp purged the voting roles in line with a recent Supreme Court case and he followed a law called "exact match" to disallow registrations that were incorrect.

In other words, he followed the law to clean up our voter roles and the Democrats said he disenfranchised blacks and minorities.

If, by suppression, you mean asking for a valid current ID when going to the polls, or making sure the person in front of you is the person on the voter rolls and is actually a living person, and finally- confirming that they are a US citizen, well then I guess it's a kind of suppression. They just want to make sure there are actual living US citizens who have properly registered to vote- actually voting.

There was no voter suppression. When we switched to voter ID requirements here, free state ID was and is not only offered to everyone without a license, but ID sites from libraries to trailers were set up everywhere.

They went unused, unless you count the graft of paying the usual suspects to oversee some of the program a "use."

We have good government agencies in Georgia. Anyone qualified to vote can still get help from many sources to register.

On the other hand, there is a lot of fraudulent behavior by Democrats on election day, not so much in the poll booth but staged outside for the benefit of the media. The idea is to create the impression of voter suppression by busing people to the polls minutes before they close, staging protests where people claim to have been deprived the right to vote (I've been at this for long enough here to recognize some of these folks), and insisting, with no evidence that suppression is happening.

Of course, academicians and public radio and lefty media amplify these false accusations.

The point is this: false accusations of racist voter suppression is evil. The people participating in it need to be held accountable. Minority voter participation belies any claim of suppression, period. Facts matter. So do false accusations.

You might read that comment, pick up on the "dead" part and think "voter fraud".

I see the "cleaning up ... on the rolls but inactive" part. One reason for provisional ballots is to allow people to vote who should be on the rolls but aren't.

It should be fairly easy to look at the party spread of those voters removed from the rolls. My guess is that they trend Democrat.

Rick Hassen tries to pretend that he's something more than a Democrat Party hack, but he really isn't.

Requiring people to show ID to vote isn't "voter suppression", and anyone who claims that it is is an idiot, and ignoramus, or an advocate of vote fraud who's upset that there are fewer opportunities to commit it.

Removing voter registrations when the person has double-registered, the registration is invalid, or the person hasn't voted in many years, is basic vote hygiene, and the only reason to oppose it is because you're planning in mining those inactive voters for fake votes you can get away with.

If you're an out of state college student who doesn't want to give up your home state driver's license in you "school state" (because you don't have a car there, but will be driving when you go home for the summer), then you should NOT be voting in the State where you're going to school

You're not a resident, you're a visitor. Vote absentee in your home State.

Or, if you can't be bothered, do the world a favor, and don't vote. Because if you can't be bothered to get, fill out, and return an absentee ballot, it's highly likely you haven't bothered to learn anything about the election.

So keep your ignorance out of the voting booth.

If you're an adult resident of a State, and you have no need of a photo ID, it's because you're not actually participating in legal society. There's no good reason to make it easier for criminals to vote.

You care about people? Great! Show that you actually do, by supporting laws to get photo ID for poor people w/o charge.

But if you call requirements for photo ID "vote suppression", you are scum who is pro vote fraud, and nothing more

"Voter roll cleanup" doesn't affect the young, they haven't been on the rolls long enough to be cleaned. As for the poor, If they're moving around a lot, they need that photo ID to get most new places. And every State that's passed a photo ID requirement has also added the ability to get a free ID.

Big win for those poor people, no?

Henry, provisional ballots are small in number- they are not the reason for delayed counts, but I will grant that they will always tilt towards Democrats. Late absentee/mail-in votes are probably on the order of 100 times+ the numbers of provisional ballots.

Yancey Ward said...

I wrote the other day- Democrats are doing a better of job of getting mail-in ballots to their voters and getting those ballots filled out and returned than Republicans are. I followed this election very closely, and here is the thing I noticed in state after state- when the polls closed in a state, the mail-in totals that had already been counted were immediately posted on RCP. The Democratic candidate always out-performed the Republican candidate on that mail-in ballot posting. The election day vote- people showing up that the polling places to vote- always favored the Republican. In Arizona, for example, as soon as the polls closed, the counties in the state posted what totals they had already counted from the mail-in votes, and Sinema appeared to be on her way to comfortable victory at that point, but the state then counts the election day votes and tallies the precincts that have finished that particular count. Arizona finished that count early that Wednesday morning- 99+% of the precincts done, and McSally had taken the lead based on that election day advantage. However, Sinema's advantage in the mail-in votes reasserted itself as the back log was counted.

In short, the Republican Party needs to up its game in identifying its voters, and making sure they vote early.

A normal election day ballot is handed to the voter, filled out by the voter and scanned into the tally machine by the voter.

Completed provisional ballots, absentee ballots and mail-in ballots are handled by the polling officials. That creates an opportunity for voting fraud. That is why those voting methods are sacred to the Democrat Party.

Lack of voter ID requirements allow the voting dead (and other frauds) to find new life.

I was a polling official for 10 years. Attempted voter fraud is common, but nothing happens when the perps are caught. They just walk out the door. There is nothing the voting officials can do to detain and charge them. Voting law is very friendly to fraud.

dwick, if you've spent any significant time on this blog it is impossible to miss how often LLR Chuck goes to bat for hack lefty fake "journalists" as they engage in full-blown dem/lefty advocacy.

I'm well aware of Chuck's history on this blog - and I respect his continuing engagement even if I rarely agree with him (although sometimes I wonder if he isn't just trolling...)
Anyway, maybe Hasen is trying to distance himself, I don't know. But he (Hasen) should have thought about preserving his integrity and credibility before now.

I fully expect to see LLR Chuck go to bat for his lefty pals in Broward and Palm Beach counties. Particularly since both Desantis and Scott are successful conservative republican politicians with military backgrounds.

LLR Chuck appears to have a very particular and peculiar strong dislike for conservatives with military backgrounds.

You cocksucker. Name a “conservative with a military background” whom I have disparaged. Don’t bother with Dr. Ricky Bobby who lied about Trump’s height and weight to spare him an “obese” classification.

Meanwhile we’ve got a draft-dodger of a President who really did put down John McCain, and Admiral McRaven.

Hansen is a racist liar. He merits no respect. His Slate series is a series of false accusations and other lies. And he needs to be held professionally accountable for this behavior.

False accusations of racism, especially be academics and the media, are tearing this country apart. They need to be treated with the seriousness with which we treat actual racism, when it is directed by the right type of people against the right types of people, that is.

There was no voter suppression in Georgia; there was only implications, accusations, and lies about voter suppression in Georgia. It was and still is Progressive propaganda being used to fire up their partisan drones.
