What's up with the pinned Tweet on Trump's Twitter feed?

The vertical lines in the "O"s refer to what... "Game of Thrones"?

Ah! Yes: "Game of Thrones Stars and HBO Are Not Happy About Donald Trump's Bad Meme/It was a total Joffrey move" (Esquire). What's the point of getting mad in public? You'll only boost the virality of Trump's own tweet.
Trump tweeted an image of himself with the text “Sanctions Are Coming, November 5” to warn about upcoming sanctions on Iran. The font mimicked Game of Thrones, and the phrase played off the show's tagline, “Winter Is Coming.”

HBO didn’t take too kindly to the ripoff. "We were not aware of this messaging and would prefer our trademark not be misappropriated for political purposes,” the network told TMZ in a statement. The premium network then followed up the statement with a tweet of its own that said, "How do you say trademark misuse in Dothraki?"..
HBO should just say nothing. Creating anxiety about enforcement of purported intellectual property rights is: 1. lame and 2. discouraging to people who care about free speech and satire.

HBO's reaction just spreads the meme to an even wider audience.

Don't Worry He Can't Get Far on Foot (2018) has a couple nice James Callahan cartoons that could be stolen for political commentary.

I'd like to thank everyone who made it possible for me to be here tonight, a speaker at a lecturn at the top of a hill, with the other side showing prehistoric animals emerging from the sea and evolving to man up the hill.

I love it when they're fresh and warm out of the dryer, two KKK guys leaving the house in sheets.

The film itself is about a drinking problem, which is always a drag to watch. The plot can be made any length with it.

How much of "Winter is coming" can HBO trademark? The sentence is hardly unique. The font without the "O" with the lines through it is hardly distinctive. So is it just the lined "O"? Or do you need to use all three together before you'd be guilty of trademark infringement? Since this is parody, would it come under Fair Use?

It was fair use by trump.

I don't think this was a good idea. When I first saw the picture, my thought was an anti-Trump meme from Democrats.

I think you need to be standing on stage with an open mic in front of a brick wall to ask that question.

It's not a trade mark, and titles cannot be copyrighted.

As to the sanctions, if they shut down Iranian oil exports as intended, we get a very, very big Persian Gulf war, and no oil exports from the region for a year or two, assuming we actually win. A war with Iran would be Vietnam II, probably with the same outcome. No one from NATO, except maybe the hapless Brits, would join us

Don't those guys have some actresses to harass?

Boy, the talking points sure went from sanctions to hot war quickly.

It would be as bad as the war Trump started with North Korea.

Says the network that has brought you Jon Oliver, Sex in the City, Girls, The Newsroom, Game Change, Bill Maher. But really, they offer other things, some of which are fairly watchable, though none as good as GoT or The Wire.

HBO should just say nothing.

They should, but it's apparent at this point that these guys just can't help themselves.

They can't stop taking the bait. Like those rats with the cocaine pellets.

One of the most dispiriting things about being a Trump voter is the realization that every writer, singer, or movie star you might happen to like utterly despises you.

tim in vermont said...

No, it's when they won't let you mourn a tragedy because before the bodies are cold they have accused you of complicity.

Well, as far as movie stars go, I just can't get myself to admire people who make a living pretending that they are someone that they are not, nor will they ever be.

John Wilkes Booth was an outlier among show biz people not for his political sympathies but for the violence of his act. Most people on the stage were "peace Democrats". They believed that the enormous sacrifices of blood and treasure that the northern states were making was not commensurate with the rewards of victory. Booth left a letter with his sister to explain and justify his actions. It reads like the most fatuous of Academy Award acceptance speeches: "I love peace more than life....When a country like this spurns justice from her side, she forfeits the allegiance of every honest freeman......Heaven knows than no one would be willing to do more for the Negro race than I.....". It goes on like that for several pages. John Wilkes Booth was the Jane Fonda of the Civil War. It is long past time for Hollywood to acknowledge this great progenitor of political activism among the show biz community. Perhaps they should have a John Wilkes Booth Award at the Oscars, Emmys, and Tonys to acknowledge that person in their field who is most outspoken in their rejection of Trump.

Satirical use of a tagline is not trademark infringement. And if HBO is claiming that the font is trademarked, then the violation is on Twitter for having on its platform.

Kate said...

There's been a lot of RW chatter over the last week: Trump's bailing on Iran sanctions, Mnuchin at Treasury has undermined Trump, Bolton's pissed... The GoT poster is, imo, for the base. It's very kick ass.

Orson kinda was a Charlie F. Kain, and since Mank wrote it to slyly subvert the high-potential youngster it adds up.

You're supposed to admire the power of their influence, which was indeed vast although moreso in the passed past though not in any given election. I am sure I speak for the Great BuBu when I say these folks play the part the men behind the men behind-the-scenes choose 24/7 always at risk of ostracism.

LOTR was a New Zealand production which is partly why it is so excellent, along wjth our old buddy J.R.R.

Cercei Lannister is a great Hillary portrayal, a being who would rather the world end forever for the living if her rule is refused than live as other than Queen for life.

After all if the people don't put her 50 points ahead, why should they be considered people or allowed life?
