Hi Ann, thank you, best always. This recording is about accepting the premise of humor amidst sorrow. From a goofy facebook post, my friend posted that someone jumped off a bridge, right in front of him. So, very serious, but, humor, finding it, means something. It means that you've, we've, started perhaps to start remembering the thing that we are grieving for. Not the loss, but them, they were great, kind of. best fam, from mattie here

I've noticed that action flicks today have comical serious moments, where the screenwriters whip out a message about life or sacrifice that's the best they can do under the circumstances, in for form of dialog. Usually the guy who saved the lady explaining things to her sympathetically.

When does the action start again is always the question. Is this a long interlude or a short one.

There aren't even tits involved, usually.

stephen cooper said...

rhardin - I have noticed the same thing. Almost all money-making movies are made by people who would make better movies if they could, but they cannot. Lots of them make a lot of money. But even the really good people in Hollywood almost always lack the God-given ability to express the truths of creation in a way that has not been done before, and that is not their fault.
Kindness to those who are not as talented as they want to be is essential ....

But God is happy with Hollywood because, at least once, in a movie not too different from any other movie, some screenwriter

(some screenwriter who may now be living in his ex-wive's car, the only thing he salvaged from the joint finances after the end of their marriage, or, as the lawyers like to call it, after the divorce proceedings, or who may be long dead from an opioid addiction, and whose grave even now lies under a foot of snow in his Canadian home town cemetery, forgotten and unvisited)

... to start over, at least once, in a movie not too different from any other movie, some screenwriter said something that had never been said before, in all 4,000 years of this world (Bible time) or all 13 billion years of this universe (university physics department time) or, like, ever (my time)

"God loves us the way we are but loves us too much to stay that way." (from "Junebug", a spunky independent film that charmed the critics and launched a career or two, but which nobody every watches anymore).....

Fullmoon - I just give really big tips to working mothers and fathers. Your suggestion is a good one, though, and I will give it some thought.

stephen cooper said...

"God loves us the way we are but loves us too much to let us stay that way"

See, I could not even quote it right

Imagine being the screenwriter who got it so right the first time

Hope the screenwriter did not have a bad divorce or a bad addiction

I don't know, but I hope

Having reflected on this, I am disquieted at the Althousian characterization of the SMG photo shop. She was 'fearful'. 'Unwilling'. If you liked a woman offering her body in a tantalizing way, you should feel 'shame'.

But here is the point: SMG dressed that way ON PURPOSE. She was acting voluntarily. She sat there for 3 hours doing her hair and make up, pulled on that outfit on her own, made those expressions by her own will. And frankly, there are a lot of alternative reads on what her face actually conveyed.

But Althouse doesn't like lingerie, women offering themselves to men, blatant sexualization like this...because it puts pressure on other women to behave the same way.

She is an old blue stocking.

There is something to be said for the old morality, though Ms. Althouse eschews the obligations and duties of the old morality: vis a vis kids, putting out at the behest of the husband, seeing to his needs. She is a Buffet Victorian Feminist.

But the shittiest thing is that just because there is something she doesn't like, she implies that it is a 'shameful' subset of rape. Something requiring searching your soul. Hmm.

She is allowed her opinion. Too bad so few people agreed. Actually...did anyone?

Since we are on the subject of impotent women, this seems odd.

As far as any historical read of a large portion of cultures, women today have it far better than they have ever had it before. I challenge someone to point out a single historical culture where women had anywhere near the rights and privileges that they do today in the Western World.

And yet...and yet...they have turned strongly to Astrology, Witchcraft, Mass Whine-Ins, all indications that they feel helpless and powerless. Powerless women have always gone to potential power outside the 'patriarchy', and embraced strange cults, such as Isis, Ishtar, or one where a funny carpenter rose from the dead after three days...

From what little research I have picked up, women today are MORE depressed, not less. Less happy, not more.

I can't say this is 100% truth, but I would certainly argue it over a beer.

"But the shittiest thing is that just because there is something she doesn't like, she implies that it is a 'shameful' subset of rape."

Dawkins wrote an interesting book, in which he explained that the sexes began, probably multiple times, as a kind of game of chicken. An organism that had developed gene exchange as a fitness adaptation split into two distinct forms. They were genetically quite similar, but one gave up producing more organisms and specialized in producing more genes, and left it to the other one to actually express those genes as an organism. This left the second form holding the bag, as it were. The paths open to it were to reproduce on the other's terms, or not to reproduce at all.

And there the matter remains, sugarcoat it as you will. As any True Femenist will tell you, heterosexual reproduction = sexual exploitation of the female. Woman is the Nigger of the World. Of course, it is worth recalling that the arrangement began with gene exchange. Apparently, even though gene exchange leaves the organism open to sexual exploitation, it is still a better deal, reproductively speaking, than parthenogenesis. There's the rub, "reproductively speaking". Feminists are simply applying different criteria than evolution employs.

Capitalism... requires some things to work. Competition, transparency, truth in advertising. None of which can be maintained without government intervention.

I think that's an exaggerated conclusion. Capitalism requires oversight, but not an active visible hand. The premise of the theory is that the "invisible hand" will tolerate and smooth perturbations to mitigate the risk of catastrophic misalignments. The interesting part is that moral actors will self-moderate, and competing interests will prevent others from running amuck, and both are necessary and sufficient under circumstances without monopolies and practices. So, government oversight has both positive and negative influences on the dynamic stability of a capitalist system, and liberty generally.

Hollywood is such bullshit. In the movies, when you feed a body into the wood chipper, it mulches it. Not true. In real life the bones and sinews jam up the gears, and you're left with a hell of a mess. I hope everybody had a better Thanksgiving than I did.

@reader, the majority (if not all) the “poor Meade” comments are from me, and I am certain that Meade can take care of himself. Althouse was having fun with us, and I dished some of it right back. Just good-natured fun, and if I offended Althouse by implying she was incapable of looking after her husband, well I was just joking with the two of them.

FIDO said...

As an argument, this seems to hold together and I can see why a woman would be resentful, but no more than a woman whose birth shape was 'round' or a man who was born 5'4" tall, or someone who got stuck with a mildly poor roll on the genetic dice.

I would suggest that the entirety of the Western World has been to make women as comfortable as possible in their genetic role, certainly compared to Islam and most polygamous societies.

But their dissatisfaction is expressing itself in self destructive, evolutionarily negative social actions: single kids do worse, and single women have more difficult lives...in general. Maybe not for the Upper Class Educated elites with made up comfy jobs.

I will ignore the irresponsible insinuations Althouse gives to anything she sexual she disapproves of, as she has proven that her Overton 'Window', is, compared to the vast majority of the population, less 'window' and more 'arrow slit'.

Your ppst put me in mind of Amadeus (my favorite movie until my sister bought me the director’s cut. It’s supposed to be some special “insiders” edition, but the truth is those scenes were cut from the final release for a reason...).

Anyway...Amadeus is about Mozart and how he is destroyed by Salieri, the acrchenemy he didn’t even know he had. Salieri desperately wanted to be a great composer, and he achieved great success, but he was a hack. Only two people knew he was a hack—himself and Mozart. The same two people who knew Mozart was the real talent. Even though outwardly Salieri had everything talent could possibly get him while Mozart struggled in poverty, he was driven mad by the knowledge that Mozart actually was the genius he could only dream of being.

stephen cooper said...

tim maguire ... youtube has several great scenes from Amadeus.

My favorite is the one where Salieri is in a room with Mozart's wife (she has visited him to ask for a small loan), and he is handed some manuscripts from Mozart's wife, because she is bringing them somewhere else to be recopied by someone who, in the Vienna of the day, wrote out music scores for the orchestras, But he (Salieri) is curious to see them - and, as soon as Mozart's wife hands them to him, he looks at them, and looks at them for awhile (while in the background the music from the scores he is looking at is played) and after he looks over them for a minute or two, he asks if he can take them with him for a while, and she says, well, no, Wolfie would be frantic if they went missing, you see, they are originals ....

and Salieri says .... These, these are originals ? and almost cries, and Mozart's wife does not recognize his emotions .. He can't believe how anyone could have written down that music without revision (originals meaning - copies without corrections)

Are they not good, she asks, not understanding the pained look on his face

They are miraculous, he replies .....

That was a well-written scene, and the actor who played Salieri, and the actress who played Mozart's wife, were perfect

On the other hand, the actor played Salieri with so much charisma that one has to think that he would have enjoyed life without his random envy .... that is, sinfulness is bad .... life is enjoyable when we avoid sins like envy

as we all should, all being unique in our way.
