As our hostess has not commented on the Netflix streaming movie, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, let me suggest that people take the opportunity to view it. It is an anthology movie with six chapters, each a bitter little vignette set in the cinematic world of the American West. It is both bravura cinema and sad.
I found the episode “The Meal Ticket” the most haunting and, in thinking about why, I think that I have better understood the underlying theme of the movie, which I view as the failure to connect with and build upon our cultural inheritance, in this instance the American Western. In “The Meal Ticket” a skilled, but grievously handicapped, orator declaims poetry to a rapt but tiny frontier audience. Each of these pieces is immediately recognizable to me, and performed with extraordinary impact, to the extent that the editing allows the spirit of the oration to come through. Yet, the orator’s connection to centuries of tradition avail him nothing when the public prefers to see a chicken pecking out supposed arithmetic sums. I wonder how much of the Netflix audiences will know whence his words came.
All of the episodes present bits of the past as envisioned in Gene Autry, or John Wayne, or Clint Eastwood versions of the past, but no one finds happiness, or success, or redemption, only death.

I was just pondering: Would the media be more or less anti-Trump if we were experiencing a bad economy?, entering another war?, losing thousands in a current one? In other words, if Trump was in the middle of an obviously failed term, would they kick him more while he's down or just report the news honestly becuase it was bad enough? I think they would still pile on the fake news on top of the real stuff.

Wife and I enjoyed “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.” We had the same impression as Two-eyed Jack, very dark, but well-done. I was most impressed by “The Girl Who Got Rattled,” which led us later to watch the movie “Meek’s Cutoff,” in which the same young actress also appears in another grim depiction of life on the Oregon Trail.

My over-riding thought is that Epstein is a monster who makes Weinstein look like Dudley DoRight, and he was sheltered and served by Ken Starr, Alan Dershowitz, Alexander Acosta and a host of other supposedly distinguished and prinipled legal luminaries. Perhaps its time for Big Law to have its MeToo moment. Or maybe a MeToo hour.

bagoh20 said...

Two-Eyed Jack,

I too enjoyed "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs". I was laughing at times and disturbed at others, but thoroughly entertained. It included the Jack London short story "All Gold Canyon". I didn't know that when I was watching the movie, but the film immediately reminded me of the short story which I read many years ago. As it went on, it seemed to show the scene and action exactly as I remember seeing it in my head when I read it. About halfway though, I started realizing that was not a coincidence, then I Googled the movie and found out it was the same story. It was beautiful cinematography that rivaled my own imagination drawn by London's great writing. Netflix truely has some great original content you don't see anywhere else.

I got pissed off at my cable company last week and fired them on the spot when they gave me some terrible customer service. Just told them to shut it down, and cancel me. Until I found a replacement I only had streaming TV. I was missing nothing, but commercials.

It's one thing for guys like Starr and Dershowitz to babble about how even a guilty man deserves to have his day in court with the best defense he can afford. It's something else entirely for them to use their reputations and connections to help a man who systematically molested hundreds of underage girls to avoid legal action altogether. When Dershowitz worked for OJ Simpson, he could at least be forgiven for seeking to demonstrate his legal prowess in a difficult and high-profile case. But here they did everything they could to prevent Epstein's case from becoming high-profile. If they helped him to avoid the scrutiny he richly deserved because he is a very wealthy man and they can always use some money, then they are merely craven vermin who are unworthy to lick the dirt off my shoes. But I can't help but think that some of them must be motivated by something a lot less defensible than greed.

Then there are the "prosecutors", who did their level best to ensure that the truth would never see the inside of a courtroom, and that his hundreds of victims would never have justice nor even closure. It is difficult to believe that greed was not their motivation as well. It seems somewhat unethical for them to continue to accept their State and Federal paychecks if they were employed by Epstein. Of course, it is also possible that they were simply acting to shield the many prominent men who had accepted "favors" from Epstein, on his "Lolita Express".

Jupiter said...

"The secretive deal allowed Epstein to quietly plead guilty to two felony prostitution charges. He admitted to committing only one offense against one underage girl, who was labeled a prostitute, even though she was just 14."

Continuing to read The History of the Dark Ages. Sort of Game of Thrones in real life e.g., King marries daughter of another King. King kills father-in-law, beheads him and makes a drinking cup with gold ornamentation out of his skull. Later, at a banquet, forces wife to drink from said skull cup. Wife bides her time, collects a lover, stabs king. Wife and lover hunted down, killed. Kingdom descends into anarchy. It would have anyhow from some cause as all the kingdoms move from anarchy to brief order and back to anarchy. The Popes were ineffective until Gregory the Great and then immediately after his reforms came the Moslems. Why am I doing this to myself by reading this history right after Scott Walker lost in Wisconsin? I will not read this book again, no matter what.

PETA asked that the town of Wool, UK change its name to Vegan Wool...

In other words change its name from something useful, satisfying, and comfortable into something useless, unsatisfying, and as comfortable as a hair-shirt sans hair. Yep, that's vegan.

Also, does anyone else feel that it's cognitive dissonance for vegans to constantly manufacture substitutes for the very same animal products that give them hesitation? It strikes me very much as alcoholics drinking non-alcoholic beer...just unable to completely break away.

That's it vegans. You can no longer tack on vegan to pre-existing products. We demand you make up your own words. Vegan wool is now Vuul and tofu-sausage is now Vurst and such and such. Those are probably bad examples, but you do have all day at the co-op coffee shop in front of your computer to look up early indo-altaic root words for tuberfungus that causes diarrhea as a basis for these future brands. Get crackin'!!!

Robert, I've lived within a number of fire areas (I've been in mandatory evacuation zones about 5-6 times in my life, though I've only evacuated about twice).

Trees are fairly resilient and a number of California forest species are fire resistant (to a point), they'll burn the lower parts, but still survive. And forest fires can be very patchy, especially in areas where there were crews fighting them (or retardant dropped) and even in wilderness area the fire can be like the wind, going this way and that, but leaving patches untouched.

Trees that are completely burned will likely be cut down. The closer they are to rebuilding areas, the faster. But it can take years to get to them. There are forestry companies that do this, and come in with a large crew and get the trees down fast. If, that is, the trees are near where power lines will go in again and where there's rebuilding.

Forests are made to recover from burns. There's some trees that actually need fire to burst the seeds open, if I remember right. It clears the undergrowth and it's actually amazing to see. There's seeds in the ground all throughout the forest that will start giving life again before too long.

@Robert, another article I read indicated that a handful of houses survived and many trees in and around Paradise were undamaged. Here is drone footage of Paradise taken after the fire. In the earliest part of the video you can clearly see trees that show no signs of damage, and around the 1:10 mark you can see a house with yellow siding that appears to be unburnt. A different drone video that I can't seem to locate now showed houses burned to the foundations, but trees, including deciduous trees, between the houses still having plenty of greenery.

In California congressional races the GOP got a combined 33% of the vote but only 15% of the seats. That's a 10 seat difference. Do they get to complain about gerrymandering now? What are the odds this will even be discussed in the media?

stevew said...

Live trees are wet, as compared to dead and down trees, so it is quite possible that some didn't burn at all and others simply lost their foliage to the fire. Gerard at AmericanDigest has an entry about an apple farmer in Paradise. They lost all their buildings but none of their orchards. The trees are healthy and alive so they didn't burn. He says that the roads/paths in and around the orchard acted as a fire break.

Remember though, we need to mock and make fun of Trump for suggesting that the deadwood, aka: fuel, be cleaned and removed (he said raked) from the forest.

before the day we die, the day when we, as God wanted, tumble into the future the way a tired person tumbles onto a couch or a bed, with confidence, the confidence of knowing God loves us and God is happy, delighted, even, to know that, grateful and happy, we love God too

That's worthy of contempt, but pales in contrast to the dereliction of duty by Alexander Acosta, Trump's Labor Secretary. He was the top Federal Prosecutor in Miami at the time and is the one that deserves the most outrage for not doing the job he was paid to do on behalf of the public.

The argument you seem to be implying is that since the MSM will not give Trump any credit for doing the right thing here, he should refrain from doing it.

And, when you lie in an MRI and receive enormous doses of electromagnetic radiation, why don't YOU wind up fused to the machine?

And, can you explain why this practice was continued by the Brits numerous times, once they understood that "degaussing" was impermanent?

Finally, THE REASON degaussing was done was NOT to make the ships "invisible", but only to make them less susceptible to being hit by Germna mines which sought out magnetic objects in the water?

All navy ships are degaussed after commissioning and after modifications that change their magnetic signature, all have internal magnetic coils around the hull whose purpose is to minimize the ship's magnetic signature, every major naval port has a degaussing range to verify the coils are working properly, and all steel hulled ships transit that range every time they go in or out of port. This system is a countermeasure against magnetic field influenced mines and is always on when the ship is underway. Second Flash! The probability of a ship's crew experiencing anything approaching a Philadelphia Experiment type of incident and it not becoming general knowledge shortly thereafter is zero, regardless it's classification, because there are too many people involved and many of them are civilians who aren't subject to secrecy mandates regardless who classifies it.
