In my opinion the medical profession has a lot to answer for. If I go to a surgeon and ask him to cut off my perfectly good left leg because I woke up this morning feeling like I am really and truly a one-legged man I would be tagged as mentally troubled and urged to seek psychological treatment.

But if I demand to have my dick and balls removed – well, that’s OK – as long as payment can be obtained, of course. It’s a shame that the medical profession has decided to cater to and encourage such travesties. Gender politics has bad outcomes.

Meanwhile, I have a relative who has been desperately trying to get a medical procedure approved by insurance to be done on his hands so that he can continue working in his skilled trade, and be able to support his family.

Dupuytren’s contracture is a medical condition affecting the hands and fingers. It is also known as Morbus Dupuytren and in slang terms "Viking disease" or "Celtic hand.” Dupuytren’s contracture is characterized by thickening of tissues in the palm. If the condition progresses, it affects one or more fingers in the palm and bends them towards the palm, and the fingers cannot be straightened fully. The condition mostly affects the ring finger followed by the little finger and then the middle finger. It progresses very slowly and takes months to years to develop a severe contracture. Usually both the hands are affected simultaneously.

Now he is down to only two usable fingers on each hand. Thumb and index finger: which is also slowly becoming curled.

I guess a surgical procedure for a Deplorable working man is out of the question. But....if he wanted to have his dick amputated so he could be a woman, perhaps they would authorize fixing his hands at the same time?

To Manning. I hope you die.

Just to clear up what “travesty” means – here’s Dictionary.com offers:

a grotesque or debased likeness or imitation:

a travesty of justice.

a literary or artistic burlesque of a serious work or subject, characterized by grotesque or ludicrous incongruity of style, treatment, or subject matter.

a literary or artistic composition so inferior in quality as to be merely a grotesque imitation of its model.

The meaning I used was “a grotesque or debased likeness or imitation.”

Why would a physician ever cut off apparently healthy body parts in an effort to cure a problem that obviously resides elsewhere?

Women who believe they are really men want to cut off their breasts. They believe that their breasts are what makes them a woman. The lack of a cock and balls they can disguise.
A person who believes that removing his genitals will make him a woman sexually identifies as a man. A person who believes that removing her breasts will make her a man sexually identifies as a woman.

Because Manning was dishonorably discharged, she lost her military health benefits. Why do people assume her surgery was government funded or that we paid for it?

It's hard to tell if the folks in these comments are more upset about the surgery or that Manning's sentence was commuted and she is now living however she wants to live.

For the folks genuinely troubled by the surgery, does breast augmentation/reduction surgery bother you as much?

It is really hard for me to wrap my head around wanting the kind of surgery we are all assuming Manning had, but it's equally hard to understand the hate or contempt that people feel for the surgery, the medical experts who recommend and perform it, and, in some cases, the people who get it.

The Progressive element in American society is pushing a sort of homosexual/transgendered Gleichshaltung on the rest of us. There is a demand, or a requirement if you will, that the rest of us must recognized transgenderism as being normal and even, after a fashion, privileged. In some places (e.g., certain college campuses) this demand is explicit; mostly it is implicit, but powerfully stated and promulgated nonetheless. You know damn well that this is the case, and that this is what Michael K and Dust Bunny Queen were referring to.

tcrosse said...

Adam said...

Roughcoat -

If that's what they were referring to, why didn't they say that? Althouse, of all places, seems like the place where you really have to say what you mean. Their complaints seemed much more specific than what you're referring to.

I'm almost certainly part of the progressive element that you're referring to, though I don't know for sure as I have definitely not been party to any efforts to push Gleichshaltung. I want people to treat transgendered people as normal people in the sense that you treat them the same way you would treat any other similarly situated person. Most of the time, that shouldn't require any special treatment. We all deviate from the norm in some respect. Sometimes that deviation from the norm will prompt us to change a person's name, build a wheel-chair ramp, locate an interpreter, speak a little louder, not use the awful smelling perfume, or eat pretzels instead of peanuts on the plane. I'll concede that sometimes the deviation will cause us to change too much or the deviation is so rare that it's not efficient for everyone to accommodate; the inconvenience will be too great relative to the harm. The changes required of me when someone is transgendered are, I think, small and manageable (e.g. change the pronoun when speaking about him or her).

It looks like you disagree with the need to make any accommodations for transgendered people. What does that mean in practice? Do you want to prevent people from having the surgery that we assume Manning had? Are you ok with the surgery paid through private funds, but just don't want to have to call Manning a woman? Is the surgery ok as long as it is deemed abnormal? Is it ok if we allow the surgery, agree that transgendered people are normal people, but do not extend extra privileges to them?

I'm not trolling; those are serious questions meant to see if there is some middle ground for us. I'll concede that there are lots of folks to the left of me that have made support or opposition to LGBTQ issues the single issue by which they judge the morality of another person, and that doing so is not fair.
