At the First Frost Café...

P1180497

... you can warm up inside.

It's going down to 29° tonight — and it was almost 80° a couple days ago — so it was the day Meade dragged the big avocado tree inside. He dismantled all the ferns too. It looks so empty out there now!

We haven't had frost yet, but something about the weather just destroyed my impatiens. They had been so glorious, bushing up to about 18"- just lovely mounds of bright color all year. Now dead green brown stalks.

So it goes this time of year. Sometimes in Texas a norther can drop the temperature 30 degrees in an hour or two.

Mid 30's tonight, and rest of the week, a couple hundred miles due E/NE across the lake from Madison.. Favorite fern is in, the rest have to wait....for a frost. Big maple shed the rest of it's leaves overnight, and the big pines shed their needles.

I love fall.

It's going down to 73° tonight in my hometown.

And in another news, it was a terrible decision for the Trump administration to hand a blank check to the Saudis. Credulous commentators in the US have been far too kind to MBS and his reformist chimera. Rand Paul's efforts to halt arms sales and military assistance to the Kingdom are worthwhile pursuits.

First, let’s begin with the easy distinctions. There is a yawning legal and moral gap between First Amendment–protected activity, no matter how angry and boisterous, and a true mob. Screaming protesters picketing on a sidewalk are in a fundamentally different position from screaming protesters who invade private property to chase a senator from his meal. - National Review

Yeah, and an illegal border crosser is a different legal and moral thing than a legal immigrant, but don't expect the left to honor that distinction either.

its laughable that National review is asking average people to send them $$.

They've obviously been dancing to the Big Donor's tune for 15 years.

Every time I read NR, I think to myself "Who the hell is their audience?"

The answer: People who want open borders, bad trade deals, tax cuts for the rich, and wars in the middle east. That's why they supported Hillary in 2016. IOW, The Koch Brothers, Paul Singer, and Jeb Bush

Note: Kevin Williamson got fired by Atlantic Magazine, but it looks like David "Surrender Monkey" French is going to be their new "reasonable conservative"

What a wonderful day.The winds and rain last night blew the dust away and left a warm sun in a clear blue sky. But the traffic in Atlanta was extremely light, almost like the 1996 Olympics traffic. I suppose many left town this time early because schools closed, just because the Gulf Coast from Mexico Beach to Destin blew away last night. So they headed west to New Orleans/Baton Rouge to party a day early.

Michael sheered a ~100 y.o. pecan tree at the ground in the hour of wind gusts we had today. The neighbor's electric line and my Dad's Buick are underneath it. Somehow, they still have power, but the meter is off the wall. Duke Power is busy elsewhere.

No frost due here in NC for awhile. We just went through our second hurricane in a month, but Michael was no big deal here -- just a lot of rain and a some wind. Temperatures for the next two weeks are predicted to be highs in the low 70's or high 60's (except for one day in the low 80's) and lows no lower than the mid-40's. I don't miss the cooler temps in Conn. where I grew up, and I certainly don't envy their taxes!

I did not find the arguments or links from Al Arabiya that persuasive. The ones in Arabic I obviously have no way of judging. The quotes from Edrogan are meaningless. Of course Erdogan is going to take such a position. It would be insane for him to make definitive statements about an issue of such potential international implication. Turkish authorities have claimed to have audio and video recordings supporting their claims. We will have to wait and see. The case already comes on the heels of the Essam Al-Zamil case.

Yes, that is interesting. I had quit reading Al Arabiya because I was concerned it might provoke an investigation, LOL. I certainly agree that this event has been 'misreported' but how can we possibly know what really happened? It would seem the 'fiance' is a fraud, which is definitely a cause for alarm.

Sprezzatura said...

"It would seem the 'fiance' is a fraud, which is definitely a cause for alarm."

Well, you support a POTUS who has had to give back millions because of fraud, via US courts, so it's hard do see why something that you think would seem to be fraud would definitely be a cause for alarm.

Logic is tricky.

Howard said...

Al Arabiya is the Saudi Royal Family propaganda arm. These are the same people who bought and paid for the destruction of twin towers on 9/11. This makes me question Mike K's loyalty to the United States.

Sprezzatura said...

Perhaps Mock,

You'd be more consistent to say that it's ok for governments to kill journalists, if it means that more dough will go to the job creators. After all, that's the pass for DJT's fraud and lies and racking up US gov borrowing. E.g. the US gov borrowing more than eight grand per working person since DJT was elected.

Did you net out more than an additional eight grand comin' to you from the gov v what was gonna come to you via the gov, since the election? No, you didn't. That was a rhetorical Q.

The distribution of the benefits of the gov taking out loans don't work like that. You not a job creator. The gov borrows money to benefit job creators.

Duh.

Math is tricky.
