I want to see how this looks....

I knew after last night, they were a half game out, but I wanted to gaze on the graphic depiction.

ADDED: The season could end in a tie, and we'd have to play the Cubs to see who wins the division. Then the loser will be the first wild card in the National League, and if Cubs/Brewers win the wild card game, the Cubs and Brewers will play again (because the winner of the wild card game will play the winner of the Central Division).

ALSO: It was a rough night last night for the Cubs: "Racial slurs hurled in bleacher brawl at Wrigley on Hispanic Heritage Night" (Chicago Sun Times):
The incident began following the Cubs’ 5-1 loss to the Pirates. The game featured specially priced tickets, which included t-shirts saying “Los Cubs.”

Danny Rockett — who hosts a Cubs podcast called The Son Ranto Show — began videotaping.... In a second video posted by Rockett, the same man from the first video can be more clearly heard yelling slurs at other fans.

“You threw the first punch,” he yells. “You threw the first punch! You threw the first punch.” He then cups his hands around his mouth and hurls two racial slurs for hispanics.

The man who used the slur immediately saw Rockett videotaping and says, “Don’t record me!” and comes toward him. Security can be seen pressuring Rockett to put his phone away: “You’re on private property. You don’t have permission to videotape anyone.” The video then ends....

When asked on Twitter what started the fight, Rockett responded with one word: “Racism.” However, after being contacted by the Sun-Times, Rockett said, “I really don’t know. Probably just drunks going back and forth. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary really until it was a melee.”

Cubs spokesman Julian Green said... denied a claim made by a woman in the video in which she accused security of taking the “white people’s side,” saying everyone involved was removed. Green did say the security guard was “incorrect” about fans filming — there’s no policy against recording video at Wrigley. “People film every time they come to games,” he said. “We will brief our staff about that.”

PLUS: Another tweet from Rockett: "To all the people who followed me because of that fight I hope you like the #Cubs. Cause that’s all I tweet about. #Nofightinginthebleachers"

A few years back, in our local minor league, there was an interesting situation. It was early in the season, and one team - because of flooding in their home town that made their field unplayable - had missed a full three games on the schedule. They and another team were at the top of their division. Both those teams had won more than two-thirds of their games at that point, and the team that had played three more games had two more wins and one more loss.

In the standings, the team with more games played was in second place (by percentage points), but was technically half a game ahead of the team in first place.

There are the rumblings of changing the way the division playoffs are seeded for precisely this reason. There is a similar issue in the AL East, if the Yankees defeat Oakland they will play against the Red Sox. Some suggest in this event the wild card winner play a division winner outside their own division.

I believe the ‘78 Yankees are the last team to win the World Series after winning a play in game. Thanks Bucky Bleeping Dent...

yes, after The Cubs play their playoff game, then the brewers and the cards will play their wildcard game; then the wildcard winner would play the best in the national league (The Cubs).

Then, After those games; the post season starts....

In other news, Astros clinched AL West on 100th win of season. Because they have the second best record in the AL, the Astros have to play another division winner in the first round. So instead of the Yankees with 97 wins or Oakland with 95 wins coming out of the wild card, the Astros go up against AL Central Champs Cleveland with 88 wins.

Security looks a bit understaffed. Can we get some muscle in here?

The Crew is in a good spot. The last weekend, they get to play the Tigers while Chicago gets St. Louis. It is odd that a division deciding series will be played against an interleague opponent. The dodgers and Rockies may also tie. It is also possible that Atlanta may finish with the best record giving them the wild card winner. They are only 2 behind the cubs and 1 1/2 behind the Brewers, and are on a roll.

What's the common denominator in so much bad behavior, sexual, athletic, domestic, vehicular, what have you? Alcohol. But no one ever wants to talk about maybe people could dial back the constant boozing. If you even bring it up you're attacked as a prude and a prohibitionist.

When they first went to three divisions and added a wild-card team, that's the way it was. The wild-card team played the division winner with the best record outside of their own division. They apparently dropped that rule when they added an additional wild-card team, and a specific wild-card game.

Forget about half games, focus instead on the all important loss column. You can win more games, you cannot lose fewer than you already have.

Addison Russell, Cubs' shortstop, has been convicted by the Chicago press of spousal abuse based on no evidence.

In the midst of a contentious divorce and child custody battle, his now ex-wife posted complaints about abuse in her weblog.

That's it. No evidence. No police complaints.

Cubs' management immediately abandoned Russell and the two Chicago papers have since competed over who can more fervently denounce Russell and suggest that he be run out of town.

Russell makes a lot of money. Divorce and child custody battles, particularly when a lot of money is at stake, are notorious for producing phony abuse accusations.

John, as an Astros fan, I'm perfectly fine with this! ;-) Though the 'Stros beat 'em both last year, so.

P.S. I'm also perfectly fine if the Brewers lose out. F*ck Bud Selig and his pissant move shoving the Astros into the AL while protecting his precious small-market Brewers team. They started in the AL, they could have gone right back. Let Milwaukee fans enjoy the 9:00PM game starts, instead.

Chicago is just Chicago. It was violent when whites had it, and it's that way now that blacks do. Welcome home, Assholes.

Shouting Thomas said...

Russell, by the way, is a pretty helpless target.

The turmoil of his personal life over the past two years seems to have had a debilitating effect on his performance on the field.

He's still an All-Star caliber shortstop, but his offensive production has cratered, so nobody is particularly sorry to see him go.

Welcome to the friendly confines of Wrigley Field. A late season-promotion for a game with the no-hope Pirates goes badly wrong. Now the Cubs need to wrap up with three losses to the Cardinals and everything will be back to normal.

Rory said...

In 2015, the Cardinals, Pirates, and Cubs had the three best records in all of baseball. They were in the same division. The system required the Cubs and Pirates to play in the wild card game, with the winner advancing to play the Cards. The other division winners, the Mets and Dodgers, played each other in the first full round, after they had gone 4-10 against the Cubs and 1-11 against the Pirates during the season.

You know what I noticed? The empty stadium. Key game for the playoffs late in the season and you could get a bigger crowd at a Hillary rally in Wausau (she would do better in Madison)

Well you can thank my hapless (without hap????) Pirates who have taken to the Cubs recently.

hurls two racial slurs for hispanics

"Hispanic" is not a race, so did they hurl "HONKIES"? Perhaps we'll never know...

And LOL for yet another "hurl slur"; can't the MSM scribblers think up a stupider expression? And only two slurs hurled? That's not very many at all.

BTW, "Hispanic Heritage" began in 1965.

@Crack - it is a mystery to me why black athletes have given up on baseball. My boy hood heroes were Bob Gibson and Lou Brock. It’s a great sport, easier on your body than football and you make more money as a pro.

Crack is right about one thing. You can put all the Black and Hispanic men you want on the field, yet baseball remains a quintessentially White sport. It doesn’t lend itself to ethnic flair.

Shouldn't that have been - since this was a night to honor and celebrate Hispanics -
the "brown people's side"?

Come on everybody, if you can't get your identity politics right, just STFU.

There's a pipeline from high school to college to pro in football and basketball. That's important for infrastructure, coaching, etc., but it also allows a kid to become a local celebrity at 16 as a football or basketball player. A great athlete who's 5'9", 160 pounds can be well-known in his community at football or basketball or can be anonymous as a baseball player. Even a high pick who gets seven figures to sign then goes on to be an anonymous minor leaguer at some random town. If choosing a sport in your teens, which would you pick?

Me, too, but f(rom what I'm told) it simply moves too slow. Basketball zips around at the Harlem Globetrotter speed blacks like nowadays. Even football can't compete, and it's a close second, but that's what I'm told.

Speed up the game and it'll live.

I'm happy for the Brewers and, since the D-backs are out of the picture this year, will be rooting the crew in the NL playoffs. Oakland in the AL, although I still like the 'stros.

robother said...

Thanks to the D-Back walk-off win v. Dodgers last night, the Rockies are in the same position in the West as the Brewers in the Central. If both Dodgers and Rockies win all their remaining games (or equal losses) the West ends in a tie. Division tie breaker could both decide Central and West Division Champs and Wild Card teams.

In retirement, my only job is playing music and I get paid for it.

You're dumb as shit, Crack, and you've got serious emotional problems.

I've seen men in your circumstances solve their emotional problems. A lot of those men solved their problems by entering the military and learning discipline and life skills. But, then, they weren't lazy ass motherfuckers like you, and they didn't have your delusions of grandeur.

My advice to you, dumb shit, is to stop parading your stupidity and laziness in public. There's still time to learn a job skill. My mother passed her LPN boards at the age of 63.

Lazy fuck that you are, you'll just spend the rest of your life broke and bitching. That's your life.
