September 28, 2018

I just got a fund-raising email from the Democratic Party, signed Cory Booker, and it says nothing about Kavanaugh or Supreme Court nominations.

That's a screen capture of part of the email. I'll put the full copied text below the fold. The letter tells me that the midterm elections are important — "the most important in our lifetime."

Why? We need "to put a check on President Trump."

That's the big issue this morning, as far as I'm supposed to be concerned.

Later in the letter, there's a list of "our Democratic values" — "From voting rights, to workers' rights, to a woman's right to make her own health care decisions." A bland grab bag of old issues. Nothing building on the energy of the last few days.

I've heard reports that Democrats are raising money on the Christine Blasey Ford allegations and the demonizing of Brett Kavanaugh. Maybe some other Democratic Party email list does that, but from my point of view, the party is absolutely not doing that. The absence of this issue is especially telling since it's going out under the name Cory Booker, who's been a very active antagonist to Brett Kavanaugh in the televised hearings. I wonder how this issue has been polling for them. Badly, I'm going to guess.
Full text of email:
I wholeheartedly believe this year's midterm elections are the most important in our lifetime, Ann.

In 39 days, we face a battle for the very soul of our country. Our democracy depends on Democrats' ability to put a check on President Trump -- and that means taking back the House, the Senate, and seats all across the country.

This Sunday at midnight marks a crucial end-of-quarter deadline -- the last one before Election Day. Each contribution made before the deadline will help Democrats take back Congress and win seats in all 50 states. That's why I have to ask, Ann:

Will you make your first $3 donation of 2018 before Sunday's midnight deadline? Time is running out to support Democrats before Election Day.

DONATE: $3

DONATE: $10

DONATE: $25

DONATE: $50

DONATE: $100

Or donate another amount.

The DNC is sending Democratic campaigns and state parties across the country the resources they need to reach every possible voter by November. But the level of support our party is able to provide to candidates between now and Election Day depends on you, Ann.

From voting rights, to workers' rights, to a woman's right to make her own health care decisions, so many of our Democratic values hang in the balance. This is a pivotal moment for our country that requires all of us to stand together in support of Democratic candidates who are ready to work to win back our country.

The DNC is the only Democratic organization where your contribution supports every race at every level in every state across the country. Democrats nationwide are depending on you to step up right now, Ann.

Sunday at midnight is the Democratic Party's final end-of-quarter deadline before Election Day -- and your contribution will help determine how many of our candidates win on November 6th. Donate $3 right now to power Democrats in their final sprint toward victory.

Together we can build an enduring movement to elect Democrats this year and in the years to come.

In solidarity,

Cory

Cory Booker
U.S. Senator, New Jersey

I have to think that suburban soccer moms aren't thrilled by the hearings or the accusation. They have sons, and Kavanaugh's career is basically what most people would want for their son: athletics and academics, Ivy league, law school, and a high profile legal career along with a lovely family. The idea that their own sons could one day face an accusation like the ones leveled against Kavanaugh, and that an entire lifetime of work could be derailed by unproven accusations, has to scare a lot of middle-of-the-road women.

Not really.

Most Americans are decent people. Mothers with sons are particularly angry with the Democrats and their Maoist bullshit.

When DiFi was questioning Coach K yesterday there were 3-4 slips of paper thrown at her by an aide moments before she seemed to back off her line of questioning. It made me wonder if there was one of those real time focus groups with the little turn knobs showing their displeasure and they were letting DiFi know.

Shouting Thomas is right. At this point in the #MeToo witch trials nearly every married woman has a husband or son who could lose their careers over baseless allegations — may even know someone who’s been victimized by a lying, conniving, woman. Women lie, and women know that very well.

The problem for the Democrats is that their addiction to identity politics means that they expect the vast majority of women to fall in line like Inga, or at least Althouse, and women in the real world don’t work that way.

I really wish a Republican would have the guts to put this into an ad. Ideally find a mother who was also a sexual assault victim to say something like, "As a victim of sexual assault, I want justice for victims. As a mother, I want due process for men like my husband or my son. The Democrats offer neither, and that is wrong."

The Democratic Party mailing list is not fine-tuned at all. I never give money to any political cause. I think the last time I did was in the early 90s (and only because I got personal phone calls from Russ Feingold and it became harder to say no than to give him $500 or because a friend was running for local office).

The GOP sends me fund-raising email too. They address me as if they know that I'm wedded to the conservative cause and quick we must save the Republic by giving them money.

I say go fight it out between yourselves and I'll watch. They should be satisfied that I don't give money to their opponent. That's how I help.

I like this! You are making a necessary distinction within the universe of females.

I would make a further distinction: Leftwing women v. Non-Leftwing women.

Unmarried women are a huge voting block of the Democrat party now. On the whole, they are largely Leftist, and may are crazy. But there is a subset of unmarried and divorced women, who aren't crazed leftwingers, trying to make it, and may even desire to get married or re-married to a nice guy.

It'd be good to carve a little space in the sane part of the world for them, too.

But your overall point is well-taken.

anyways, there's been polling on K. the last 2 weeks by either Silver or Cohn. Drops in Independent women & Republican women. But K. is doing fairly well in certain districts. Well in TN. Overall, though, Thomas was MUCH more popular at confirmation. about 60%. K.'s support has been in the 30s%

Now, people might react to yesterday and his support will go up.

We don't need to guess because the pollsters are on it. We'll know in 10 days to 2 weeks how it shakes out.

I'd break it down further:

Those who are partisans: by that I mean almost certainly voting for 1 major party or the other. Those who are suburban vs. rural. Those who have a college degree and those who do not.

Those who are high consumers of news and frequent, likely voters. Those who are low news consumers and infrequent voters.

Those who are truly swing voters. Partisans & high consumers of news like to say they are swing voters. They aren't. A lot of swing voters decide at the last minute & are low news consumers.

Some people care a lot about SCOTUS. As unbelievable as it may be to commenters on this thread, there are a lot of people who are not following this SCOTUS stuff & don't really care.

Partisans aren't nearly as important as swing voters at this point in the election cycle.

None of either sex has succeeded yet, and I'm still here, so life is still challenging. Most important of all, if Ford's allegation was believable, why didn't Feinstein send her letter to the FBI? FBI investigation would be quiet to keep Ford's "anonymity" that she was supposed to desire.

Do the Democrat politicians have such low regards for the intelligence of the voters? Guess they know what kind of people would vote for them.

First you need a female crazy enough to be willing to make up a story and lie in front of the entire country.Second, Democrats are more freaked because of the perception this appointment will change the balance of the court.Such a weak allegation with the victims named witnesses all disputing the claim would most likely not have been put forward if the Dems were less desperate.

I pretty much od'd yesterday in binge watching the testimony. Today, even with the impassioned pleas for "just one more week" for the FBI, I would prefer this move forward to the full Senate. In theory it sounds prudent to have a FBI investigation (Senators Whitehouse and Klobachar) but it would be pointless. Why didn't the Senate bring in brain experts and a team of psychologists to explore what happened, false memories, etc.? If we're going to discuss this rationally let's really do it. Actually it all comes across as a hazing ceremony and enough is enough.

The Ford testimony was persuasive, she is a credible person. There is no question that she firmly believes Kavanaugh assaulted her and has believed that for a long time. But the fact that her close female friend Leland would not corroborate Ford's story ended it for me.

Could Kavanaugh have lied? Possibly, but in my view unlikely. He's held himself to a very high standard all his life, which is why the attack on his reputation has been so emotionally devasting. Now he's been permanently traumatized too.

I think that's a fair question and a good one.

Here is how I would answer it.

1. The Dems didn't have this sort of claim/witness against Gorsuch. I don't mean to suggest that I think Ford's claim against Kavanaugh was meritorious. I mean to suggest that it is a claim that is devilishly hard to disprove, and is the kind of sexy thing, like a Stormy Daniels or a Paula Jones or an Anita Hill, that people can rally around, unlike the particular 14th Amendment concerns of Roe v. Wade, or the elections clause details of Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission. People understand sex better than they understand the Constitution.

2. The Dems hate Kavanaugh even more than they hate Gorsuch. Kavanaugh has a history in Washington. Before the Dems broke down the judicial filibuster, people like me and the other members of the Federalist Society could never dream of a Kavanaugh nomination. He was way too conservative, too ideological, too political, too radioactive to ever hope of getting 60 votes in the Senate. The Dems on the legal staff of the Senate Judiciary Committee know exactly who and what Kavanaugh is, and they HATE him for it.

3. Mark my words; Kavanaugh will be to the right of Thomas on the Court. The Dems who think that Kavanaugh will be their worst nightmare don't know the half of how bad it will be for them.

But if Democrats can’t meet our final End of Quarter goal of the election in 72 hours, Republicans will get away with everything. We can’t stomach that.

This is one of the most unprecedented moments in American history, every single gift you make until the deadline will be quadruple-matched.

XXXX, Republicans must lose their seats for this. We need 25,684 Democrats to step up before the deadline and make it happen.

Will you rush $1 to take back Congress and kick every disgusting Republican out of office?

That being the case, Ann, why would you be inclined to believe, with no actual evidence to support her allegations, an obviously neurotic woman like CBF?

Because Cousin It goosed her or something (what does "molested" mean exactly? Devil's Triangle? Butt pinch? What does it say in the unlinkable OED? The elevator women molested Flake, I believe.) that one time at band camp and it broke her.
