Please assess the taste level and effectiveness of this ad for Ted Cruz.

Here's the link to the Ted Cruz tweet with the video.

Somehow, I am incapable of getting embed code that includes the video. Maybe it's me, but I checked the "include media" box. Is Twitter making it harder to share or is it me?

To our hostess.....I saw a video of Beto talking a softball question from one of his staffers. It seemed to work just fine.

Know your audience.

I’m immune to this stuff but it probably helps Cruz in his re-election bid. Beta is not a strong candidate in Texas. He’s be great in New England.

Bay Area Guy said...

Outta curiosity, how do you get "Beto" out of Robert O'Rourke?

Is it Robert => Roberto => Berto => Beto?

Yes, it doesn't matter, but it still vexes me.

Francisco D said...

IMHO, the most effective part of the ad was the applause of Beto's audience and connecting it to the leftist elite in Hollywood.

The veteran' talk was heart tugging, but we are becoming immune to emotional manipulation.

Beto should be investigated for a campaign finance violation after giving an unreported donation to the Cruz campaign.

amusing to see the squealing of the BetoBots in the comments to Cruz's video. They are hopping mad at the very idea that supporting the flag is a popular position.

The ad was good, the abridgment of O'Rourke's answer was fair, and I had no issue with the taste level. I especially like the slogan they're using for Cruz: Tough as Texas.

FIDO said...

It is more tasteful than having Paul Ryan throwing an old lady off a cliff.

So anything better than that is okay by me.

Effective? Not at reaching Democrats. But it may swing a few points of independents.

But Cruz really needs a nose job. He looks deformed.

brylun said...

Beto should move to New York and run against crooked Hightax Andrew Cuomo.

Did twitter veto the ad? It doesn’t show up for me.

Tyrone Slothrop said...

Tastefulness, about normal for political ads. Effectiveness, 7 out of 10. No question that Beto said those things, and it can't be a popular position for Texans. Austin-- I mean Shed Legacy-- maybe, but not Laredo.

traditionalguy said...

That was a high level manipulative political spot aimed at the Deplorables #1 weakness, which is their Scots-Irish tradition that values and honors courage shown in war. It is a visceral thing, not a cerebral thing. The Ivy League intellects may declare themselves the winner of the free speech debate at Oxford Union, but when the Funeral procession for Chris Kyle ( the American Sniper) happens, that draws hundreds of thousands of fellow Texans out to stand up in his honor. And it draws them out to vote just as powerfully.

So Cruz is using of a giant empathy/feelings issue. These are so often noted by the Professor to be stronger motives than mere rational argument. And it goes deeper than all the others combined. If you don't believe me, ask Clint Eastwood how it works.

I am fond of Beto.

At least, I am quite fond of a number of family and friends who are fond of Beto.

They like him a lot, and don't seem to mind that he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning the election, so they won't be too hurt or angry when Cruz wins by a landslide. No worry about heated conversations over family dinners.

They just seem to want to live the fantasy of a handsome, well-spoken politician mouthing the sort of political bromides that are focus-tested among fashionable progressive circles. I can at least let them have that, considering I'm getting a conservative and competent Senator for another six years.

So when they talk excitedly of Beto, I nod along, and suggest the latest Beto puff piece or the upcoming Beto documentary (BETO VS. CRUZ: THE FIGHT FOR 2018 -- playing in November at the Austin Film Society)

Family and Friends are more important than politics.

If you're in the parts of Texas where job interviews regularly include the phrase, "Now we're Christians here", then this ad will go over very well (They think, because they say something's disrespectful, that makes it so, just as Liberals say their charges against Trump are "not debatable" and "silence is not an option"). They're just ideologues arguing. No amount of re-telling them it's a protest against police violence, and not the anthem, will make them deal honestly with others - just as their Christianity doesn't. They just want their way, and their way is to attack blacks, for any reason - including those they make up.

If you're not in those parts of Texas, it just looks like pandering to people who could give a damn if they're wrong or not, as usual.

MadisonMan said...

For a Cruz Ad, there was too much Beto in it. If you clicked off half-way through, what would the message be? The message from the Veteran should be first.

Rabel said...

Good ad. Got right to the point.

As for as Cruz's Twitter account, someone must have sent up the batsignal or else there are an awful lot of fanatics and trolls and hired hands who keep it open full time because they responded almost immediately and in bulk.

A lot of money is being spent by the Democrats and their supporters for internet work. There's quite a story there for anyone who can penetrate their systems.

Tank said...

Did not play, but I DuckDucked it and found it.

I did not like it:

1. Too obviously manipulative.

2. I don't want to tie the flag and the NFL issue to our veterans and make this a veteran thing. This is a great country for everyone who was lucky enough to be born here. Everyone. We should all stand for the flag which represents this great country. We all have America Privilege. If you hate this country, at least stand quietly while real Americans show their appreciation.

What would happen if the ad showed a picture of Willie Horton, I mean Colin K?
Cruz wisely left that out.

Likewise if they'd muted the audience cheering Beto, thought that might have gotten Cruz more free publicity, too, and the critics would have looked very silly.

Twitter, along with Facebook and Google, seems to have appointed themselves The Ministry of Truth. They'll gladly suppress the wrongthink from conservatives either outright or surreptitiously. One might assume that at some point prominent conservatives would get the hint and move off of Twitter and regroup upon one of the many alternatives, but sadly I don't think many have yet.

The Stars and Stripes banner and the poem about Ft McHenry's defenders waving it while proudly defeating the British Navy has nothing to do with Christianity. It is about fighting your enemies, not loving them. Which may be why oppressed young black men don't like acknowleging its claims. It asserts a man's privilege/right to defend what is his from armed gangs out to steal it and kill anyone who stands up to them.

When you stage a protest, and the people observing the protest don't know what you're protesting, it's not the fault of the observers. Either you don't have a clear message, or you picked the wrong venue. I think Cruz's ad is fine. His message is clear, he doesn't resort to name-calling, and he hasn't distorted Beto's message or taken it out of context. I'm not personally a Cruz fan, but I think he has the pulse of Texas.

Mid-Life Lawyer said...

Taste is 7-10. The veteran in the commercial was obviously okay with the message. It's too pandering for my taste but not offensively so. Effectiveness is 5-10. No votes will change, either way.

"Did we decide Crack was Ritmo in disguise or not."

I threw out the possibility the other day because he is so adamantly over the top and because I have never seen them on a thread together. In addition, they both seem to crave attention in the most negative manner.

Either DBQ or mockturtle thought Crack was too rational to be Ritmo, but the more we hear from Crack the less rational he seems.

Inga scoffed at the idea, but that's Inga. I wonder if he is one of her kids living in her basement.

bagoh20 said...

Both Beto's statement and the ad were just more bla, bla, bla. Both were appeals to emotions devoid of the nuance or context of the arguments. I don't like the taking a knee bullshit becuase it's based on a lie, does nothing constructive, and unnecessarily disrespects the flag and pisses off people.

But, there could be good reasons to protest the flag or the anthem, but this is not one of those reasons and an NFL game is a dumb counterproductive place to do it.

So they are both right or wrong.

TestTube said...

As I said last week, the original video marked the exact moment when Beto admitted that he had no reasonable chance of winning the election. No Democrat with decent campaign management (And Beto's has been very, very good indeed -- How do you think he got all those out-of state $$$ and flattering profiles?) would touch that question in Texas if they thought they had a fighting chance.

Ted's ad didn't need to be good, it didn't even need to be not bad. It didn't even need to be. Beto sunk himself last week.

The Crack Emcee said...

Last time I was there, I mostly worked around Austin and Lubbock, so I got the best of both worlds: From getting cornered by a group of Democrat harpies screaming "What about my reproductive rights?!?" to watching Republicans laugh as they rip off illegals so confidently, they even explained to them how they're doing it, while on the job.

If this isn't what your life's like, you don't know what you're missing.

bagoh20 said...

I can think of lots of people and their protests that would make Beto retract every word he spoke there. Would he make that argument for protests calling for Obama's impeachment, Hillary's arrest, or an anti-abortion protest every game? He does not really believe what he said, but that is why we have a Fen's Law.

rehajm said...

Why question the ad's 'taste'? Political ads are never in good taste as their only raison d'etre is to manipulate, which is never in good taste.

Is the idea to evaluate the appropriateness of the exploitation? Who's being exploited here? I suspect it's anyone who thinks the question posed to Beto was from a real person and not a shill.

Oh - and the ad isn't in "good taste" because it IS deliberately misleading. I'm starting to think I have to tell Republicans the same things I tell Democrats, like how one party has to be BETTER than the other in order to win votes. If they're both filled with crackpots, cultists, and liars, who needs them?

I'm not going to think this protest is about the anthem just because a bunch of liars insist it is - I'm staying in reality no matter how they frame it - including finding a guy with no legs to tell a lie on blacks without any either.

bagoh20 said...

If it's not about the anthem, then do something constructive instead, or do it during a mayoral speech or police academy ceremony. Nope it's only done during the anthem. Trump ask them for constructive input and they provided none, becuase it's not about fixing anything. It's all about the special respect you get from certain people for posing during the anthem. That the "thing", the prize, the proof of your authenticity, your courage, your edginess. How lame. All they need to add now is to say "hold my beer and watch this."

"Taking a knee" is supposed to be a protest. Protests are intended to get wrongs righted. Usually that means changing minds and hearts. The civil rights protests in the 1950's and 1960's showed how it's done. Although the enemies of civil rights took protesters' lives, the protesters won because they changed the minds and hearts of a lot of people, both in and out of the South. It ought to be pretty obvious by now that taking a knee during the playing of the National Anthem is NOT changing minds and hearts in the direction the protesters presumably want. Quite the contrary. When one incumbent Senator uses his opponent's support for take-a-knee in a campaign ad, you know take-a-knee is having a negative effect. So this is no longer a protest. It's just a thumb in the eye of American patriotism. I don't think that's what most of the players (who are among the most fortunate people in our country) really want. They should stop.

People don't realize all the good that these kneeling athletes have accomplished simply by kneeling. Most police officers think of those kneeling athletes when interacting with the black community. The kneeling has radically altered their behavior. They've become so much nicer. For their part the black community has responded to this change in attitude by becoming markedly more cordial in their interactions with the police. None of this would have happened had not the athletes begun kneeling.

You do not denounce CNN when they run bullshit stories about ow those terrorists in New Mexico "struggled" to train kids to commit school shootings.

You refuse to denounce the violent little shits like David Katz who was a member of the "resistance" after he goes and shoots 4 people.

You support the DNC after they were caught on video paying for violence at Trump rallies.

I can't count the number of times democrats have bashed veterans and the military in general.

Your party ran John Kerry as a presidential candidate. Ask those veterans at the American Legion what the definition of Blue Falcon is. There is a picture of John Kerry right there in the definition of Blue Falcon.

Ever since Al Gore sent his lawyers to "inspect" foreign deployed veterans ballots in Florida to get as many disqualified as possible we have known where you stand.

Screw you people. You are with awful people and you support them.

I also have ancestors in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.

My son might apply for a DAR scholarship for his kids but that is all I am interested.

Anyone who supported Kerry in 2004 has no claim on American patriotism. Kerry was a traitor by the old definition.

Section 3 defines treason and its punishment.

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.

The Congress shall have Power to declare the Punishment of Treason, but no Attainder of Treason shall work Corruption of Blood, or Forfeiture except during the Life of the Person attainted.

Kerry fits that definition. A party that nominated him is also guilty.

There are hundreds of thousands who risked as much as McCain, and suffered as much or worse. And they have no public monuments or high schools.

My aunts husband, a US reserve officer, perished in the death camp at Cabanatuan. Which American kids don't know about. Nor about the "hell ships". No high schools named for those men. Some like him, with a body to rebury, got a marble cross. The others got their name on a wall somewhere.

Bob Dole was crippled by enemy fire in 1945. Famous in his day, and hurt far worse than McCain. But no high schools.

Fame and monuments and high schools are a function of publicity based on political utility. The real heroes are forgotten, their stories are deliberately expunged, because they are inconvenient.

Michael,

You are the one who attacked me.

I was minding my own business, leaving a general post about the current topics of the day.

That's when you YOU YOU made it personal. You were highly insulting, and told me I had nothing to do with the American Legion. k

What's up with the gratuitous personal insult? Are you not aware that you did that? The only reason I said anything about my family was in response to you.

Of course I shouldn't be baited by people, but, look at the thread. You started it.

I would have ignored your personal insult, but for my father's service.

You know, you all complain a lot about Chuck and Inga messing up threads. You all need to examine your threads. A couple of you throw in these horrible personal insults. Or you tell someone else what they did. "YOu voted for xyz." The person has not actually done the thing you claim, and they get baited. So they respond to you. Then the thread degenerates into a side thing.

ANd you all blame Chuck, or Inga, or me, in the case of this thread.

ANd you're right -- I've been successfully baited. But it's incredibly annoying to be told i"m not part of a military family. Especially when my father enlisted during Vietnam. I well know that most of you did not enlist during that war. I am aware of how common deferments were. So I got baited.

Michael, the reason I'm writing this, is that I do not think you do it intentionally. Now there are a couple of people who bait intentionally. You all can guess who they are.

And it destroys threads.

Who wants to read this crap we've been writing? No one. So, it's fair enough people get annoyed with it and annoyed with me. But those who provoke and deliberately bait, and throw out gratuitous personal insults -- you play a part in this.

Then they try to run the government without the norms. And that doesn't work.
