The Murray Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect:

“Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray’s case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the “wet streets cause rain” stories. Paper’s full of them.
In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.”

So in today’s posts we find the following:

1. A Supreme Court Justice who actually rejects the death penalty itself objects, without evidence, to the use of a supposedly torturously painful drug in executions.

2. A new NYT diversity hire disparages due process as “what we get in lieu of justice” (I guess substantive due process did not justify imposing SSM after all) and falsely defends racist tweets, going back five years, as reactions to nonexistent harassment.

3. The Trump Tower “controversy” (i.e., BS cooked up by progs) is not only fake news but based on fake law.

4. A white woman gets disparaged for claiming white-girl privilege even though she was arrested and got no privilege.

5. Sacha Baron Cohen goes around duping non-prog supporters of Israel into embarrassing themselves.

6. Muslims run a compound where they trained kids in school shootings, but in the reporting the motives and purpose remain mysterious.

Which raises the question, do progs ever make an honest point or argument about anything?

Perhaps we should be encouraged that they still feel at least some need to dissemble and obfuscate, knowing that a portion of the public doesn't like Muslims preparing for school shootings, or "comedians" attacking supporters of Israel, and so on. Their hegemony is not yet complete.

Thanks adSs -- good stuff.

@FullMoon, regarding "wet streets cause rain" -- As Americans moved west in the 19th century they were encouraged by the theory that cultivation produced rain. Naturalists measured rainfall as the midwest was settled and established that as more land was farmed, annual rainfall increased. This was sound data science. Until the data changed.

On the other hand, cities do raise temperature. Not everything is effect producing cause.

Local TV had the Tampa v. Miami game. Neither team looked good. Tampa won on a field goal after Miami went ahead on passes by Bryce Petty , the old Baylor Bear star who is a real Indian, a Chickasaw. Florida weather is nice. But old redheads should not swim too long without sunscreen. Although sunburn brings back many memories.

Song lyrics by Edward Heyman (1907 - 1981)

------

Easy Come, Easy Go

Love has fooled us,
It has cooled us.
Once it ruled us,
Now we're free.

We'll be happy
In remembering
That we found love
Easily.

Easy come,
Easy go.
That's
The way.

If love must
Have its day,
Then as it came,
Let it go.

No remorse,
No regret.
We should part
Exactly as we met.

We never dreamt of romantic dangers.
But now that it ends,
Let's be friends
And not two strangers.

Here we are,
So,
Darling,
Au revoir.

She usually is. The best part? I have no idea about her personal politics.

After Being Destroyed, Trump's Walk of Fame Star Multiplies

Donald Trump's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame — destroyed on several occasions by detractors who sometimes wield a pick-ax — mysteriously multiplied over night so that on Thursday morning there were several dozen stars.

No, I just had to get up for work this morning. Full Moon has had these spells of craziness and I should have remembered.

I will stay far away from him in the future. Also Crack is not improved with absence,

The Murray Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect:
I'm finally reading Shelby Foote's Fort Sumter to Perryville
It's very interesting; some of the battles he describes, i actually know quite a little about (having walked the grounds of Fort Robinson, Pea Ridge, Shiloh; and having read a LOT)

In each of the battles i'm familiar with, it really seems like he's describing some fictional pretend world that does not correspond with our world's geography or history.

He seems pretty informative about Island 10, and the battle for West Virginia thought </sarac

Foote is quite good. You must get used to his very lengthy sentences but he really tells the story well. Wish he would identify more clearly the dates and the sides some of the less known generals are on. For all that, I just finished that first volume again for the fourth reading of his book.

I visited a Quebec cheese shop with a liberal and she loved it, thought it was great. I pointed out that they have over 200% tariffs on imported cheese that keeps these shops running and she answers “Whatever they have to do!” and because by this point I knew it was hopeless I didn’t ask her whether she thought that it was equally important to keep Wisconsin steel mills open as it is cheese shops that appeal to affluent snobs.

It’s feeling vs thinking. Democrats have their supporters thinking with their id and have shut down their cerebral cortex. It’s working. Man was I glad to see the last of her.

Oh yeah, she also droned on about how mad the Canadians are at us, when the stores and restaurants here in Vermont are choked with Canadians, and, as often happens when tensions are said to rise between the countries, American flags could be seen flying at Quebec farms. as if to say “We don’t buy into that crap.”

he certainly tells a good story, and i don't mind that Jeff Davis is always thoughtful and wise, or that the rebels are always heroic (i'm reading it to get the other side's version, and he does that well).

And i'm not saying that he's (necessarily) worse than usual among writers; i'm just saying that the Murray Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect is quite evident with him. He sure says lots of stuff that we're just supposed to take his word for. And he misses stuff that most other writers feel were vital.

Example: He Glosses over the leadership failures on Van Dorn's left that DOOMED his army at Pea Ridge (when your Commander is killed 5 min into a battle, and you have to take charge: YOU SHOULD TELL SOMEBODY THAT YOU ARE IN CHARGE!. That way, when You're killed 20 min later; SOMEBODY can know that SOMEONE Needs to be in command).
Oh, and he's more derogatory towards Cherokees that i thought possible: did he write this in the 1880's?
