"New York’s CBD craze has already reached Dadaesque levels of consumerism—hundred-dollar tinctures to treat anxiety in pet cats and dogs; CBD-laced room service at the NoMad location of the James hotel, in Manhattan."

Explains Rachel Symes (at The New Yorker).
Like many New Yorkers, I tend to be deeply wary of the nouveau-wellness movement that has crept into the city from L.A., with its Goopian buzzwords and mushroom tonics and colloidal silver—the idea that you can shop your way to an internal glow... But CBD, with its potential to unclench tense muscles and pacify anxious thoughts, also promises to deliver something that many New Yorkers desperately need....
CBD is the hemp derivative that New Yorkers can have because it's so low in THC that it doesn't get you high. So what does it do?
Yasmin Hurd, a doctor at Mount Sinai who uses four-hundred- to eight-hundred-milligram doses to study CBD’s benefit in opioid-addiction treatment, told me that hoping for therapeutic effects from a dosage as low as what’s found in commercial products like CBD coffees, which tend to contain only around twenty-five milligrams, is “ridiculous.”...

Not long ago, I purchased a small bottle of “full spectrum hemp extract”... It cost twenty-five dollars and contained two hundred and fifty milligrams of CBD.
So... buy 2 and for $50, you'll have Dr. Hurd's idea of a dose. Until then, as long as you believe, you'll always have the placebo effect.

Damn -crazy timing. I just got an email from someone yesterday asking my perspective on CBD. I replied "what is it?"

keep in mind, placebos are more effective by active weight than ANY other medical compound. The placebo effect SO Strong, that you don't even have to take the medicine, as long as you thought you did

My wife likes her CBD and menthol rub. She's not sure if the menthol or the placebo effect makes it work better.

From my POV, an extra $20 in rubbing compound cost is a big savings over PT.

What a coincidence. Earlier today I ordered CBD from Amazon for hip joint pain. Will it work?

Not if you keep asking questions like that.

Something is working for seizures and what is interesting is that there are several strong uses for anti-seizure medications in the mental health field.

Depakote, for example, is an anti-seizure medication that is also approved as a mood stabilizer.

One thing is for sure: when I have very damaging BPD symptoms, THC is an acute treatment. What is amazing about it is that it actually gets me through the immediate emotional problems I am having that cause damage, but when I am no longer influenced by the THC, the symptoms do not return. I am able to feel better, no longer obsess, and become productive with no physical symptoms.

A question I want to ask my friend who is Dean of Pharmacy, is why is there no treatment for acute depression?

All of you know that such drugs exist...why is there no pharmaceutical equivalent of ...let's say...opiods or alcohol or whatever?

A happy pill seems like it would be a great thing.

One note: I hate marijuana because it can give me really, really bad anxiety, and I am a high anxiety person. But I do it on purpose not for the high at all, but because within 8 seconds of consumption I am no longer unreasonably angry, hurt, upset, and obsessive about it.

It's a panacea, but we have canniboid receptors all over the place. Not all of the legends are false.

Colloidal silver caught my eye. My health food nut neighbor lady made a home brew of the stuff and applied it to her skin. That was 20 years ago. The application replaced her natural pigment color with the gray ashen look. Permanently.

OTOH, at 82 years old, she very healthy and walks 3 miles per day. She just looks frightful.

Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM for joint pain.

Medical marijuana must not be legal in New York. Otherwise they'd use the Real Thing.

It could be fun to go this way with the thread.

I read a serious study where they combined quercetin with something like Luekemia medication? In any case, quercetin might provide some anti-aging magic.

I know I am seeing less and less support for fish oil and resveratol. However, wine and fish are good.

What would Althouse say? Eat Food.

Garlic for cancer treatment and prevention and lots of it. If you like garlic and this doesn't work for you...well no big deal. Same principle with fish and wine.

The hemp derivative CBDs don't work as well as the whole flower extracts that contain ~20% CBD and 5% THC, which is illegal federally. You also want the terpenes that come with the whole plant. Since CDB cancels out THC psychoactivity, the 20%-5% blend won't get you high unless you take about 10-doses at once, then, it's only very slight.

The best solution for my hip arthritis pain was a mega bolus of cobalt/chromium installed in each joint.

Howard said...

tcrosse: CBD is better because you are not limited to small doses due to intoxication. For cancer THC is given up the butt, Bob, to prevent stoners coma.

I want to make my own CBD tincture but I can't figure out how to do it without it having THC in it. Darn it.

why is there no pharmaceutical equivalent of ...let's say...opiods

I'm pretty sure there are - Oxy, Vicodin, fentanyl.

Last year when I had intermittent A-Fib, it would usually flair up at night waking me up. A little whole flower extract CBD chocolate nib would return me to sinus rhythm in less than a minute.

Howard said...

There are strains now with under 1% THC with 15% CBD.

Making extracts are easy, but there some tricks to increase yield and effectiveness.

You're right Mary Beth. I was trying to say a med specifically marketed for acute depression instead of unprescribed usage of current drugs for that problem.

I had hoped you could see that from the context. Perhaps you could but wanted to snark a little. I hope you had some fun at my expense.

It's easy because I am really, really dumb. I am sorry for that as well.

Sorry for double post:

Howard, what is the difference between Hemp and Marijuana. My understanding is that you can extract CBD from Hemp. Any thoughts on that?

Where do you even get Hemp plants?

Howard said...

Hemp is a strain of cannabis that has very little THC, more CBD and the plant grows tall with fewer buds and a very fibrous stalk formerly used for rope and canvas. THC and CBD's are natural resins which act as intrinsic preservatives that slows bio chemical breakdown, which is why it was a staple textile crop until the marijuana hysteria yellow journalism shut it down.

Plants that are engineered for high concentration buds tend to have more pithy stalks not useful for textiles.

You can buy seeds on line.

I have looked online. Sorry I bothered you. Have a great day!

I get the dubious regard y'all have for CBD as a treatment for hip joint pain. But indulge me: which kind of CBD should I try, and from which provider? So many choices on Amazon, e.g. Don't know which to pick. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

If it proves effective because of some unconscious placebo effect/desire, I don't care. If it works, it works. It's like that warning in "Reefer Madness" to avoid marijuana because it gives you a "false sense of euhporia." What the hell. If you're feeling euphoric, it ain't false, know what I mean?

I worked on a project once that tried to find CBD analogues and mimics- there was interest in their medical benefits in a variety of conditions. Some of the really potent ones were ridiculously easy syntheses. Talk about drugs no government agency could control.

Attended a college graduation party from Portland State in Oregon where a keg of CBD beer was served. Hard to say if the calming effects were from the beer or from the alcohol. As you might expect, it did have a skunky taste - sort of like a Molson circa 1984. The entire keg was consumed. The fall graduate was a business major and is several months into a good first job.

CBD, a resin, is insoluble in water. Doubt there is a effective dose in beer

Roughcoat: go to your local dispensary and ask them. I advise to make your own edibles from the whole flower. Your dispensary can advise what strain has the best turpene profile for arthritis pain.

You should also go to a hip replacement specialist and get a full workup. Are you in Texas? This guy was also doing the resurfacing hip replacement FDA trial back in 2001 when I got both hips implanted. They are 100% good to go after 17-years.

Many thanks for the info. I'm in Illinois, just outside Chicago. I'm looking into treatment. I don't think I need a hip replacement (yet). So far the problem is . responding well to a combination of exercise, ice packs, and weight loss. Exercise has proven especially effective. I've even started running again. I want to reach my weight loss goal before I do anything. Thank again.

Also ... I take White Willow Bark capsules occasionally for the pain. It usually works.

I daresay it is hella soluble in alcohol, which you also find on beer.

The medicals in NY seem quite expensive. It's hard to understand which blend is best, and some of them are on the order of $200 a bottle, for which you could get almost an ounce of hydro, and it's hard for my father to know whether that's worth it compared to the ones on Amazon. (My mother who also has pain and also got her MM card, naturally won't touch the stuff, sigh. Won't pursue specialists or a second opinion either. No, darling, I'll just sit in the dark...)

Meanwhile, you can't just smoke it, which would be simplest, cheapest and quickest. Everybody's got to piss in the soup.

Roughcoat, is it wise to delay? The surgery will immediately improve your quality of life. Meanwhile, if you manage to suffer through another 10 years, you'll be 10 years further down the road, less healthy, less able to recover from the surgery.

Well ... I'm thinking about it. The thing is, I had x-rays taken last year and they showed no damage to the joint as is usually found with osteoarthritis. My regular doc suspects bursitis or something like that and feels that replacement is not called for and might even be counterproductive. I dunno. Honestly, my quality of life is pretty good and the problems have diminished since I got aggressive with them. But I guess I'll have a work up done and see what's what.

Howard said...

Roughcoat: Bad Lieutenant is giving you very good advise about the false economy of prolonging getting your hips fixed. Chronic pain saps the life out of you, overcompensating causes soft tissue damage to the back and knees while your hip flexors atrophy. The longer you put it off, the longer, more painful, more PT and less successful your recovery.

Also, running is probably not a good idea if you have already lost joint space due to osteoarthritis.

Howard said...

Roughcoat: If no joint damage, then get a scrip for PT and work it hard. The PT's can help you set up a simple home gym and you can continue with the exercises on your own.

Did I ask for something for acute depression? Why yes, yes I did. Normally I would worry about there being no money in it, and that it wouldn't be developed. But now realize:

"Everybody has got to piss in the soup." So if you get the soup, you get the piss.

Hopefully the soup is coming. Maybe I can take the piss out of it.
