Former President Obama spoke in South Africa to commemorate the centenary of Mandela's birth.

I haven't heard that he condemned the South African Government's policy of expropriation of property based on the owners' race (white); or the violence against white South Africans.

Doesn't he care about basic human rights?

A Sunday on La Grande Jatte--just the middle section. Looks like the girl is standing next to a tree trunk rather than her mother.

This is really creepy.

My daughter left one of the socialized cars in front of my house. As the car waited for the next user, a truck pulled up adjacent to the socialized car. The side of the truck said "Filld". I watched as the man filled the socialized car with gasoline in front of the house.

Now my internet browser is filled with adds for "Filld". I don't understand why a company that services socialized cars, and bikes needs to advertise in such a way.

Perhaps they are advertising by GPS location. Maybe my neighbors are suffering the same fate, but this is creepy.

South Africa has a progressive constitution that, among other things, establishes diversity (i.e. color judgments) and redistributive change as the highest laws of the land.

Speaking of hats, I would be interested in a post on the changing (non)use of hats. It used to be, in Althouse's parents' generation, that decent people wore a hat in public. Then, quite suddenly, they stopped.

What happened? Any of the old folks here know? Any good books on the topic?

JFK didn't wear a hat at his Inauguration. We all said "That's it! Fuck this shit!" and threw at hats at the family dog.

I wonder if he used the same sign language "interpreter?"

That was hilarious.

Obama does not give a shit about white people. Unless, of course, they are donating to his monument.

Typical of Democrats. Roslyn Carter was astonished that Nancy Reagan knew the Secret Service agent's name.

OK, important theological question. If you're stuck in line for the ONE open register at WalMart, and you see the cashier opening up another register but the little old lady who is the only person in line behind you doesn't, are you going to hell if you kindly offer to let her cut in front of you in the long line so you can be first in the new line?

mockturtle said...

Mr. McEnroe: I run into this type of dilemma every week. Just this morning, for instance. Only one check stand open, as usual. I let a lady in a handicapped cart go in front of me and helped her get her groceries onto the conveyer. I always let people go ahead who only have a few items. But my patience with Walmart policies is WEARING THIN! They are trying to force customers to use the self-checkout stands and I won't do it. But the single open checkout always at the furthest end from the grocery section is just a vile 'in your face' move, IMO. That and the 'Impeach' kids' tee shirts. My Walmart shopping days may be over.

If you let someone in front of you, they will pay with a check. Not saying "Don't do it!", not saying I don't do it, but that's what's gonna happen.

Or one of their items won't scan.

Or they'll have odd coupons..

Has Obama ever said anything about the treatment of Luo in Kenya. There have been several massacres and many of them have been raped by the UN peacekeepers in the internment camps where they seek refuge. It would be a cool gesture if, on one of his visits to that country, he takes a knee when they play the Kenyan national anthem. Perhaps he could do that in South Africa as well. It would send a powerful message.

I mentioned it the other day, but this painting by Seurat is the one used in the film Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and if my memory of the movie is good, this is the figure in the painting that the camera repeatedly enlarges to the point you can see the paint dots the artist used.

So Trump has bowed to the pressure and "corrected" his statement. If you believe his critics, especially those in the Republican Party, this should be the end of it, right? Watch and learn why it was more a mistake to correct the statement than the original statement itself. Trump was right the first time- we have literally no reason to believe the intelligence assessment because we have been shown no evidence. This is the crisis the US government faces- the institutions of it can't be trusted to tell us the truth. For every obviously anti-Trump hysteric like Comey, Yates, McCabe, Brennan, Clapper, and Strzok who no longer work in the government, how many with the exact same biases still work in those agencies? There is good reason to believe they dominate those agencies after 8 years of Obama and just 1 1/2 of Trump.

Show me the evidence- don't describe it to me- show me.

I had to look up how to spell Chappaquiddick and so I once again saw Mary Jo Kopechne.

And I have to say, recalling most of the women that Democrat presidents were banging, most of them are...not up to even a Stormy Night. Kind of meh.

If JFK banged Marilyn, that's wonderful, but wasn't the whole point of a mistress to have someone better looking than the wife? Or did Teddy go with the 'anyone who says yes' doctrine of infidelity?

Maybe it's all about lack of access by the hotter women to the president. It's not like they can do an Axl Rose and have the bodyguards pick the chicks out of a crowd.

Henry the VIII had it all over U.S. presidents.

My memory was good- here is the Art Institute scene from Ferris Bueller- I had forgotten some of the other famous paintings that it contained, but the Seurat is the featured one near the end of the clip.

The girls and women here are, in general, much thinner than most of the teens I've seen in America

They also smoke.

Correlation?

Now that's great comedy!

Someone has to remind me why our country needs a Summit with the Soviet Union 2.0. We can get more and better tin from North Korea.

Let's prioritize our needs.

I was there last Christmas. One thing I noticed was that women favored dresses, even in winter. They like the air conditioning I guess. Although most didn't have the legs for it. I think they bred nice looking legs out.

The Africans had nice legs though.

yet ANOTHER good sociology question that we're not allowed to ask!
How does american increases in obesity track with smoking? Reverse correlation??

I always use the supermarket self-checkout. It's lots faster, and it avoids picking up the latest cold from the high school bagger.

Hats went away rapidly after the end of WW2. During the war everyone in the military had to wear a hat, or a helmet. Regulations. If you had a gun, you had to even wear the hat indoors.

When the men and women got home they never wore a hat again.

My favorite hat in the military is called the "cunt" cap. It's shaped like a vulva and you put it on your head with a varying level of slink, depending on how "gay" you are feeling that day (I never felt gay, so always wore my cunt cap like a virgin).

Self-checkout's were designed to promote shoplifting as a felony.

I once used a self-checkout and the store manager stopped me, and asked to see my receipt. He looked into my bags, looked at the receipt, and asked where the candy bar was.

I shrugged, but didn't say anything, because my mouth was filled with an Almond Joy bar.

OMG! just saw this Rassmussen poll:41% of Likely Democratic Voters think Biden would make the best candidate against President Trump if he runs for reelection in 2020

Democrats think that the way to battle an old white guy that frequently mis-speaks (and is notorious for implying something about groping)...
Is to pick an old white guy that Always mis-speaks (and who has HOURS of video of him DOING THE GROPING!!!)

Two things I hate about c-store checkouts:

> Some fool in front of me wants to buy a lottery ticket, which takes forever.

> Another person buys one item and pays with a card. Doesn't anyone carry cash anymore?

I do notice it's mostly the young people who pay with a card. And they never ask for the receipt.

I converted to card/Apple Pay. Cards usually offer 2x miles on store purchases- it adds up. Never cash anymore. I still carry some and it usually leaves my wallet when the wife takes it.

I've yet to experience the Venmo though.

Human rights are a problem for Leftists. They prefer "rights". Like the right to health care, free education, and a guaranteed income. But that tramples on human rights.

They grab for the undefined idea of "social justice" as a means to for selected groups to get their "rights", at the expense of the rights of other groups.

To be a Leftist is to cede your individuality to the group. You are a BLACK person, an AFRICAN-American, a LESBIAN VEGAN ABORTION SUPPORTER.

You're never just Inga.

Because Inga, in the Leftist world, has no rights of her own.

At Woodmans I had to wait for many minutes in queue for the self checkout some days ago. It really pisses me off, but it was later in the day and not many cashiers were on duty so those lines were long.

I told my son that the tradeoff is getting very low prices and a store that has literally EVERYTHING grocery wise. Unless you want premade meals, or a full service meat counter.

Question for the Wisconsin commentariat: is Kevin Nicholson a stealth Democrat? Yeah, I know, Club for Growth supports his campaign, but it's looking more to me like the DNC's intent is to give us a Gibson's choice in November - same donkey, different blanket.
