Nah. With all the hot weather, Lake Michigan temps are quite warm (particularly near Chicago):

A little ways up Lake Shore Drive from Oak Street Beach is the Montrose dog beach. We take our two border collies. Great fun. The dogs love it. Huge expanse, dozens of dogs playing in the water, playing on the beach. We go swimmning with our BCs. They try to herd other dogs. They want to bring order to the chaos. They are obliged to try: a border collie's gotta do what a border collie's gotta do. Happy times.

When I was a kid we spent all summer at Rainbow Beach. It was just idyllic. There were handball courts and a grassy lawn where I could do 100 pushups in those days.

Nobody gos there now. Gunshots all day and night.

I wonder why ?

[The] "brain-eating amoeba", is a species of the genus Naegleria, belonging to the phylum Percolozoa....

This microorganism is typically found in bodies of warm freshwater, such as ponds, lakes, rivers, and Chicago.

So when you get brainwashed have it done in cool water.

I tried swimming in Lake Superior. In October. Never doing that again.

So how cold is Lake Michigan in July?

320Busdriver said...

Lake temp here in Milwaukee reported as 65F this am. Westerlies push the warmer water to the W coast of MI and I've rarely heard the temp here any higher than 70.

Not a legal gun among them.

You couldn’t trust the smart woman lawyer, could you? She had too much experience. She wasn’t charming enough. Her healthcare plan wasn’t perfect. She fainted after a long weekend of campaigning. You said she was a pathological liar...now look what we have.

Yes, and your point is?

I think the point is that the people who didn't like Trump, don't like Trump.

They used to say of the Potomac, the water's warm and you know why.

It was gloriously nice here Oak Ridge, TN today. It is rare for a sunny day in mid July be in the mid 80s and non-humid- cloudless skies like today would normally get the temps in the low 90s at a minimum.

pretty picture. tallest building in the pic: have people ceased calling it the "Sears Tower" in favor of that other name? we're always trying to rename things in NYC too: the Triboro bridge is now supposed to be the RFK bridge, the Battery Tunnel is supposed to be the Hugh M. Carey Tunnel now. it seems to have worked with Citi Field, as I don't hear Shea Stadium anymore, but the civic project original names are sticky.

Rusty said...

Called Willis Tower today and what you see in the picture is the John Hancock building.
I'm guessing north ave. beach. It must have been during the morning because the gang banger like to statke out the beaches in the afternoons.

rcocean, The water temp in July is usually high 50's/low 60's. That's Oak Street Beach right across from The Drake hotel. It's the young stud and bikini beach. As you walk north you get family beaches. The Chicago lakefront is one of my favs.

Per my great-grandmother, a Russian who took a cold shower every morning and never used a towel (air dried into her late 80s): going from hot to cold a couple or three times is a great way to start the day. this is particularly the case when, like me, you are sensitive to cold water. wakes me the fuck up and I start the day feeling I’ve already conquered one of my fears (I hated swim practice in our unheated community pool). never gets any easier either: a little adventure every morning.

Is that woman with her arms across her chest topless?

Darrell said...

There are several that look topless. And you can see the tops on the blankets/towels. Althouse found a beach that follows the "free-the-nipple!" legal maneuvering from a few years back.

Rick.T. said...

Never in all my years in Chicago did I ever see water that color of blue.

daskol said...

thanks Rusty for the correction. so do Chicagoans actually call the building FKA Sears Tower the Willis Tower now?

Darrell said...

Native Chicagoans call it Sears Tower.
The "Willis Tower" comes out later as a joke, if they can remember it.

Rick.T. said...

Darrell -

Yes. The "Whatcha talkin bout Willis" Tower. There was also a joke about the Sears Tower nickname as somebody's last erection but the name of the Sears CEO/Chairman escapes me now.

Phil 314 said...

Rusty,
Since the Hancock is south of North St. and the view is looking north that can’t be the North St. Beach.

Oak street beach!

WeRetort said...

None of the above. It's Ohio Street Beach (looking north). It's just north of Navy Pier. In the photo, the Furniture Mart and Hancock Building are at the far left. The black glass mid-rise building is part of Northwestern University Law School.

Late to the party as always. What I was going to say, except I would have said it's just north of the interesting little park leading up to the water filtration plant, which is in turn just north of Navy Pier. Laughable that anyone could think this was Oak Street Beach. In addition to Big John lurking in the outskirts, the tell is the stonework off to the left, showing that this a weird, little, isolated beach, tucked away off Lake Shore Drive at the start of the Gold Coast, just south of the bit bend at the Drake hotel (where the Oak Street Beach actually starts). Odd that Althouse found her way there.

Oclarki, I gave it a closer look and you are correct. My bad. Those stairs differentiate it from Oak St. as do the buildings. You might be able to see the ABA building and some Northwestern U buildings in the photo. This is a small, quieter beach than the rest.
