"I REALLY DON'T CARE. DO U?"

Come on, that must be fake! But no, "Melania Trump wears a $39 jacket with 'I REALLY DON'T CARE, DO U?' scrawled on the back as she boards plane to visit immigrant children at the Texas border - but insists there is 'no hidden meaning' in her choice/The first lady wore the khaki green Zara jacket upon arrival at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland but changed before she disembarked the plane in Texas...  Melania, 48, visited a shelter for children in McAllen, Texas, the day after her husband signed executive order ending policy of family separation for illegals/Her spokeswoman said it was her idea to visit before the president signed his executive order and he supported her trip...." (Daily Mail).

How does that happen? What sense does it make? Generally, serious people making public appearances avoid wearing clothes with any written messages on them. It simply must be intentional. So why? What does it mean?

First, I assume, that she (and whoever worked with her on that jacket selection) wanted the image to go viral, as it has. It's in your face: Here, think about this, talk about this, assail me over this as I know you will.

Take that one step forward: I know you'll find a way to attack me, like for the wrong shoes or whatever, so let me make this easy for you. Let me have written on my back the precise statement you're looking to project onto me: I really don't care. It doesn't matter what I do. That's what you'll bend over backwards to find a way to say, so let me save you the trouble of straining yourself.

But if you get through that first phrase — "I really don't care" — you'll have to confront the rest of it: "DO U?" What are you doing here, photographing me, attacking me? You're doing the Theater of Empathy, but it's all political. You act like you care because it's useful to look that way, but you don't really care, DO U?

And then, step back, what exactly is Melania saying she doesn't really care about? The children? But she's here to see them first hand. (Yeah, she's doing the Theater of Empathy too.) Maybe what she's saying she doesn't care about is what you haters think of her. She has her shell of uncaring. I mean, why was that jacket made like that? Who was it for, that $39 jacket? I think it was made for people who want to feel self-sufficent and sure of their own values and mission and to let the would-be critics know the wearer of the jacket is on her own, doing what she thinks is right, and nothing you say can shake her.

ADDED: Over the past couple weeks, there's been so much anxiety about showing that you care and so much shaming about insufficient caring. To say "I really don't care" is an amazing counterpoint. It may be experienced by some people as a deep breath of fresh air. It's okay not to care. Maybe we don't have to jump at the intense demand to express caring. Do something that actually helps somebody, and enough with the noise about how much you care. "I really don't care" that you say you care, she says, and I wonder if you really even do.

Master trolling, forcing the media into a choice between beclowning themselves over a non-issue, or reporting the visit, the order, and having to reveal that it was previous presidents who were responsible for this.

They have to beclown themselves.

I find it fascinating that I've read of three origins for this practice: 1) a 1998 order by Clinton to resolve an ACLU lawsuit dating from the '80s; 2) an order by Bush 2; 3) an order by Sessions[?] which would spread the blame to Trump.

I have no idea which is correct.

Now if the bank robbers were caught robbing the bank, should their kids go to jail with them, or should they all be released?

Norm Geras wrote a book called The Contract of Mutual Indifference years ago. I keep that simple phrase in hand but use rarely, only when I think that it will make a difference. I dont think Ive dropped it here yet.

The other analogy I think about is how many in the lifeboat dont know why there are hatchets on the boat. If you told them, they would feel they are "above" that. Well. That is stolen from Conor Cruise Obrien - "on the Eve of the Millenium" which had essays about the tightening of immigration laws and the issues it will raise. Written pre 9/11. Pre Bush. It was a different world.

Thirdly, the usual suspects of faux-shocked&put out and agonized wailers may prefer that some do not care. It is when your display of "caring" is matched by an equally unreasonable show of "caring" by people who hold a different perspective that things get out of hand. Sooner or later, signals get fuzzy.

Last: In suggesting that "if Ms Obama wore that, then..." I noted the commentator didnt suggest it would lead to a field day of negative commentary on CNN. Some goofy-assed bloggers, but not ABC. That in the business is called a tell, confirming what is often denied if asked outright, yet - indirectly - is seemingly undeniable.

Seattle’s predicament is emblematic of the broader crises faced by many progressive West Coast cities, where local leaders have forced law enforcement to take a hands-off approach to policing unsanctioned tent cities and vagrancy at the expense of public safety and health. San Francisco, long considered a model of progressive urban policy, is plagued by filth, chaos, and public-safety hazards. Local leaders plan to spend an incredible $305 million on combatting homelessness for the current fiscal year alone, but disorder spreads as the city fails to enforce the rule of law and basic sanitary measures. Block-by-block surveillance reveals the deterioration of downtown San Francisco. Of 153 city blocks surveyed, 41 contained used drug needles and 96 had human feces present. Tourists are dismayed to leave their downtown hotels, to be confronted by mentally ill and aggressive homeless people who are taking control of the streets. University of California Berkeley professor Lee Riley, an expert on infectious disease, observes that some of San Francisco’s streets are dirtier than Third World slums....

If this is a stock jacket and not a piece of personal artwork, then the message really is vague.

Please note: if a Feminist wore this jacket, the very act of 'not caring' would be a bold statement of her independence.

I don't care what she meant about the jacket or the message. And I still don't care about the Left using Mexican babies as props.

Melania goes to see the children in Texas, wears that jacket on the plane but not off, and the press is going to spend the next 24 hours trying to decipher the hidden message.

This tells the American people two things:

1. Melania went to the border and met with the kids
2. The press was more interested in her jacket than what she found

There were a bunch of stories today about how the R's couldn't pass the tougher immigration bill and some rumors about child abuse the D's really wanted to gain traction. Either of those could have taken the news lead and pushed Melania goes to Texas out of the news cycle. But no, Team Trump is smarter than that.

The press HAS to show the jacket, so they HAVE to show her sitting down with those children in a nice room.

And now Donald is pivoting to a Russian Summit possibly in July.

The news of the kids didn't make it to November. It didn't make it to Friday.

I think it is interesting that the picture on the left doesn't let you read the jacket, which I think is intentional, so your first impression is what the whole jacket says, not the part that was visible as Melania boarded the plane. Trump will win in 2020 but he won't get fifty states. I'll be happy with a win and retaining control of the Congress.

Inga can't wait for November. One of the few times we agree. We both have our perceptions of reality. One of us will be objectively right. As for Melania's jacket and the verbiage, I find it hard to believe she didn't realize what it says and that no one on her staff knowing where she was going wouldn't point it out to her. Perhaps not the best move tactically but I'm convinced she sent all of her critics a big FU. Especially after that jerk Peter Fonda's insane rant. What the Inga's don't get is that except for the progs and nevertrumpers the majority of the country ( the actually majority of the people) really don't care.

Do the outraged really care? Also, do the critics/haters really believe she cares about the stupid stories the media writes about her? Double entendre.

It doesn’t make sense that Melania would do this to her son. She has gone out of her way to speak out against these child parent separations. The message on her jacket would be a big departure from what she’s indicated the last few days.
