"Calling the shots as his West Wing clears out, President Donald Trump sees his hard-line immigration stance as a winning issue heading into a midterm election he views as a referendum on his protectionist policies."

AP reports.
“You have to stand for something,” Trump declared Tuesday... While the White House signaled Trump may be open to a narrow fix to deal with the problem [of separating parents and children], the president spent the day stressing immigration policies that he has championed throughout his surprise political career...

“I think this is one of his best moments. I think this is a profile in courage. This is why America elected him,” [said former Trump senior adviser Steve Bannon]. “This is not doubling down, it is tripling down.”...

Worried that the lack of progress on his signature border wall will make him look “soft,” according to one adviser, Trump has unleashed a series of tweets playing up the dangers posed by members of the MS-13 gang — which make up a minuscule percentage of those who cross the border. He used the loaded term “infest” to reference the influx of immigrants entering the country illegally....

I think about this issue in terms of duty. The first duty of the US government is to citizens of the United States. The American government owes no duty to foreigners who show up at our border contrary to our laws.

I wish Trump would frame this as a duty issue.

There are lots of lawyers here so this is familiar. I recall the first year of law school and the duty discussion was new to me.

Weird they associate immigration policy with the NFL protests. I'd think that a better analogy would be policy not "culture wars." Comparing it to the tax cuts is stronger in context too because it is more of Trump carrying through on a campaign promise that turned into successful policy. Reading this makes me think the AP writer just didn't care.

Terrible Trump frames his winning issue as whether or not we chose to surrender the sovreignty of the USA to the Mexican Drug Cartels who are now into industrial trafficking their other merchandise which are hordes of Central American children for sale as replacement population slaves.

Because Trump's economic boom is winning more African American voters every day, this emergency replacement population of Hispanic peasants is the Dem's last hope to make us into their very own Venuzuelan Marxist Shithole.

Besides, as president, Trump's not running a business, he's running a country for the benefit of its citizens. He should be trying to maximize their well-being without making things worse for future generations. He should be mindful of the environment, and try to improve it; instead, he's making it worse. Trump's a fool and a tool, so we have to look past his destructive presidency. He can't be ignored, but he can be resisted.

As a CEO, his first duty was duty was always to maximize earnings for EXISTING shareholders.

A common misconception.

A CEO's primary duty is to increase shareholder value, not earnings. One common way to increase value is to increase profits/earnings but it is not the only way.

One problem with profits is that they are taxed. If distributed to the shareholders, they are taxed twice. Once to the company when earned and again to the shareholder when distributed.

If the shareholder does not need the earnings, and most people don't since their stocks are mostly for retirement or other future needs, there is no point to them. Best to just let them ride.

Amazon is probably the most famous example. They had no profits at all for a long time. They now have very small profits. They pay no dividends to shareholders.

But shareholder value has increased pretty dramatically. Initially the stock was $18/share. $100 invested then would be worth over $100m today.

BTW: Jeff Bezos is now worth $140bn or so. Since virtually all his wealth is in Amazon stock and since he receives no dividends on it, his taxable income is pretty much his Amazon salary. About $3mm.

So the richest man in the world pays perhaps $1mm/yr in taxes. (I'm fine with this, BTW)

The maximize earnings is a general rule but there might be exceptions. They would need to be spelled out by the shareholders, though.

Trumpit's statement about social justice and responsibility may be true. Companies have a responsibility to act legally and ethically. But this is a means, not an end.

Ethical and responsible behavior will usually help improve shareholder value.

Depending on what the behavior is, of course. Getting woke may make fans of non-shareholders but does not seem to do shareholder value much good.

CEOs also have a fiduciary duty to shareholders to minimize taxes paid. Legally, of course.

In the war of images: lefty shows brown kids crying at the border; trump shows black kids crying in the inner city.

The connection? Illegal immigrants undercut the blue-collar wages that should be going to blacks. Their ESL needs push already stretched urban school systems to the breaking point and deny black kids the public education that is part of our social contract. My role as president is to protect the people who have been here for 400 years and didnt even want to come!

Or red v brown: show kids on the reservation crying. My role as president is to make amends for the sins of English colonists, not the sins of Spanish ones and their mestizo elite successors.

So you are saying that this expectation is what drives the stock price? That also assumes that the company has profits. Amazon has very low profitability. The hope that someone, sometime in the future, will pay some of them out as dividends does not seem like it would be worth much.

Even at low interest rates the present value of an event happening 10 years in the future is pretty small. At 20 years, it's not far from zero.

What do you suggest ?

Have you noticed that China is having debt problems ?

BEIJING—A bruising trade fight with the U.S. lands at a difficult time for China as its economy contends with rising headwinds, constraining Chinese President Xi Jinping’s options.

While Chinese officials have been bracing for a trade war for months—promising to match the Trump administration measure for measure—signs are rising that China’s recent economic expansion is ebbing, from weakening investment and household consumption to increasing corporate defaults, in part due to a key Xi initiative to contain debt and fend off financial risks.

That slowdown is triggering mounting calls from some corners of the government for Beijing to reopen the credit spigot and ease off on Mr. Xi’s program before the trade conflict further dents growth.

If you read Grant's Memoirs, you might have noticed his account of his first experience in combat in the Mexican War.

He was very nervous about meeting the Mexicans in combat until his troops crested the hill and discovered the Mexicans had retreated.

He discovered that they were as afraid of him as he was of them.

China is not the colossus some think. They have problems, too.

Trump should propose federal legislation adding illegal border crossing with a minor to the federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA).

Child Endangerment laws make it a crime to endanger the health or life of a child through an adult's recklessness or indifference. Some states include child endangerment offenses in existing child abuse statutes, whereas other states made child endangerment a separate offense....

Federal legislation provides guidance to States by identifying a minimum set of acts or behaviors that define child abuse and neglect. The Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) (42 U.S.C.A. § 5106g), as amended by the CAPTA Reauthorization Act of 2010, defines child abuse and neglect as, at minimum:

"Any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation"; or

"An act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm."

This definition of child abuse and neglect refers specifically to parents and other caregivers. A "child" under this definition generally means a person who is younger than age 18 or who is not an emancipated minor.

While CAPTA provides definitions for sexual abuse and the special cases of neglect related to withholding or failing to provide medically indicated treatment, it does not provide specific definitions for other types of maltreatment such as physical abuse, neglect, or emotional abuse. While Federal legislation sets minimum standards for States that accept CAPTA funding, each State provides its own definitions of maltreatment within civil and criminal statutes.

Even at low interest rates the present value of an event happening 10 years in the future is pretty small. At 20 years, it's not far from zero.

Divide the interest rate into 70 and that's how many years to double, to estimate compounding.

However, inflation tracks interest rate, and earnings track inflation, other things being equal, so it sort of cancels out as far as inflation based discounting goes.

The usual trick to raise today's stock price is to show growth, which, if it exceeds inflation, produces an infinite value if you assume it continues unchanged. So you can get some piece of that with nifty bookkeeping. A growth stock buying stodgy old companies is one favorite trick. Earnings go up every year (growth!) leading to a higher stock price and ease in buying another stodgy company. It works until some analyst sees through it.

Hi Michael K--

My post speaks for itself. Americans pay for protective tariffs, and special pleading and cronyism show up regularly. If our complaint is that the Chinese are stealing our IP, tariffs aren't going to stop that. If our complaint is that the Chinese manipulate their currency to keep prices to the US artificially low, that is one reason that the Chinese are starting to be financially stressed.

Generally, voluntary transactions between trading parties leave both sides better off. Government interventions generally benefit some and punish others, but politics and cronyism decide who benefits. With unemployment approaching historic lows, American workers seem to be doing well in the circumstances and will do better. I understand the politics of Trump's posture, which is consistent with his campaign rhetoric, but I question whether it really benefits Americans, as opposed to raising prices, limiting choices, and distorting markets.
But maybe it will be different this time.

I love the framing of MS-13 and cartel/gang members as "a small percentage" of those crossing the border illegally.

There were 415,000 apprehensions last year. How many crossed but did not get apprehended? We don't know. Let's assume it's 2x as many - meaning we apprehend 1/2 of border crossers.

A "small percentage" of crossers being MS-3/cartels/gangs would mean, say, 1-10% - or between 8,300 and 83,000 gang members are illegally crossing into the U.S. each year and half of them are being caught - the other half are entering. And perhaps we should assume that a gang/cartel member has better odds of crossing undetected than a impoverished person

That may be a "small percentage" but that's a huge freaking number of people belonging to extremely violent and criminal organizations.

Trump will keep on fighting on immigration, and won’t fold.

And the longer it goes on, it non narrative stuff will surface. Or Trump will find something to smash the Overton window in immigration. My guess is he’s testing responses and seeing what works.

From what I read, Democrats won’t agree for immigration reform, since this way they resist Trump. So the Ryan amnesty won’t happen. Short sighted thinking by the Democrats. Actually good for the us.

Gut feeling - Trump is getting a lot of hidden support on his immigration stand, but nobody will admit that because of the fear of “racism” and being heartless on “think of the children”.

Timing as mentioned is strange on this immigration children issue. Makes sense it was to distract from the IG report, and the destruction of Comeys reputation. The sudden change to lack of coverage of Stormy by the media is a wow. The Stormy meme was not working to destroy Trump, so it got dropped. I feel strange typing that, like I’m a conspiracy nut, but the Blatant politicizing of the press is the only explanation I can see of these actions. With Stormy the press was screaming Trump is going to be impeached any day, and now just chirps.

I still think the story was from the Mexican War but I am not at home and don't have my copy of his Memoirs handy.

From Wiki:

Grant was tapped to serve as regimental quartermaster,[51] but yearned for a combat role; when finally allowed, he led a cavalry charge at the Battle of Resaca de la Palma. He demonstrated his equestrian ability at the Battle of Monterrey by carrying a dispatch past snipers while hanging off the side of his horse, keeping the animal between him and the enemy.[52] Before leaving the city he stopped at a house occupied by wounded Americans, giving them assurance he would send for help.[53] Polk, wary of Taylor's growing popularity, divided his forces, sending some troops (including Grant's unit) to form a new army under Major General Winfield Scott.[54] Traveling by sea, Scott's army landed at Veracruz and advanced toward Mexico City.[55] The army met the Mexican forces at the battles of Molino del Rey and Chapultepec outside Mexico City.[56] For his bravery at Molino del Rey, Grant was brevetted first lieutenant on September 30.[57] At San Cosmé, men under Grant's direction dragged a disassembled howitzer into a church steeple, reassembled it, and bombarded nearby Mexican troops.[56] His bravery and initiative earned him his second brevet promotion to captain.[58] On September 14, 1847, Scott's army marched into the city; Mexico ceded the vast territory, including California, to the U.S. on February 2, 1848.[59]

I recall it from the Memoirs and it was the Mexican War. I'll be home tomorrow night. I'll try to remember.

Build a wall (at least create a physical barrier that prevents entry), and families willing to endanger their children by bringing them on a long dangerous journey will not be separated from them. Human traffickers will also have a much more difficult time bring children or teen MS13 members here, and drug dealers will have a harder time transporting drugs.

In the meantime, ask all Democrat members of national and California congress to house a few immigrant families in their homes. According to immigration numbers, only 2000 children are in this situation, there are about 10,000 unaccompanied children as well.

Well, yes, of course. But I don't know what use that is here. That gives you future value and you were talking about present value.

PV is the inverse of future value. The future value of $100 in 1 year at 10% interest is $110. (Very simplified)

The present value of $110 to be paid in 1 year at 10% is $100. (very simplified)

Neither has anything to do with stock pricing. It may have something to do with valuing the expected dividend stream. In the Amazon/B-H case the expected dividend stream is $0 so the present and future values are both zero.

Stock price for Amazon and B-H is based on 1) The underlying value of the assets "breakup value" but more on 2) The expectation that the stock price will continue to rise.

Do MS-13 gang members register their arrival at the border? I mean, I wonder how we know how many are crossing.

What do we do with a child that is accompanied by an MS-13 gang member just to scam the system? Do we give the child back to the gangster, set them free in the desert, keep them, send them back to Mexico, or look for their loving parents who gave them to the gangster for his use. Your real MS-13 problem isn't due to members crossing the border, but a concentration of young men of the target culture living in the US.

That is, the greater the number and proportion of young Central Americans in the US the larger the recruiting base for MS-13 and other such organizations. Its not usually understood that MS-13 was founded by Salvadorans in Los Angeles. Its a US organization for the most part. And it also recruits second-generation members, in areas where the local population is largely Central American.

As we approached the brow of the hill from which it was expected we could see Harris' camp, and possibly find his men ready formed to meet us, my heart kept getting higher and higher until it felt to me as though it was in my throat. I would have given anything then to have been back in Illinois, but I had not the moral courage to halt and consider what to do; I kept right on. When we reached a point from which the valley below was in full view I halted. The place where Harris had been encamped a few days before was still there and the marks of a recent encampment were plainly visible, but the troops were gone. My heart resumed its place. It occurred to me at once that Harris had been as much afraid of me as I had been of him.

I had forgotten the incident but found this in the gutenberg version of the Memoirs,
