Obviously they will have to allow in the differently-visaged and the horizontally-challenged if they want to be inclusive. After all, why should a so-called "beauty contest" cater to patriarchal standards of physical attractiveness?

I think Miss Congeniality (Sandra Bullock) had a beauty contest plot. A boyfriend somehow emerged out of it.

He was dropped by telephone in Miss Congenialty II in the first minute. They decided on a new direction.

There was no Miss Congeniality III.

I am looking forward to this summer. I wanna work out more, bbq more, go on more hikes, watch my kid's football practices, watch my other kid's beach volleyball camp, play more guitar, and write more.

Yeah, I still get bogged down with the minutia of work, chores, files, meetings, emails, but who doesn't? The key is to elevate above the mundane!

Michael K: question re Miss America. Do pageants make any sense anymore? If getting rid of the swimsuit competition and renaming it a competition and otherwise undermining the event ruins it, is that bad? The corporations that own it lose some money for doing something stupid, if this is indeed stupid.

The pageant itself is a strange, retrograde spectacle to me to see women parading around play-acting a bygone form of male-gaze inspired femininity. Ball gowns, bathing suits, talents, answering usually silly questions--it really is weird. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But if you want to see hot chicks in bathing suits, there's the Victoria's Secret televised fashion show. Much better looking since entry is based on a narrower set of talents, making the contestants very well suited indeed for the spectacle. Women in ball gowns can be found in society pages, and talented women are all over the other competitions on TV. Women answering silly questions...the View? The Real? It's definitely getting harder and harder to find a woman wearing a crown, which is the crowning moment of that strange spectacle. But that princess crap isn't all that cool anyway.

I've never really paid attention but I have read that the women in the programs thought they got a lot of benefit.

The shift to "Patriarchy is Bad" stuff is very unlikely to do them any good,. Engineering programs are now being watered down to prevent hurt feelings.

Four Otterbein University professors suggest that women may be averse to STEM fields because they feel they work harder than male students without earning higher grades.

After conducting a study of 828 students in STEM classes, the professors discovered that while women felt they put more effort into their classes than men, they received approximately equivalent grades, which “indicates that women's higher perceived effort levels are not rewarded."

Feelings will not build a bridge that does not collapse and kill people.

The media is running fast away from a story about women engineers.

In an apparent attempt to connect women executives to the accident, the stories use a legitimate quote from Leonor Flores, a female project executive for MCM, that was published in a story on Florida International University’s website before the collapse.

Flores, who is a university alumna, spoke of sharing her line of work with her 12-year-old daughter as they watched the installation of the 950-ton pedestrian bridge, which was intended to connect the university’s campus and the city of Sweetwater.

“It’s very important for me as a woman and an engineer to be able to promote that to my daughter because I think women have a different perspective,” Flores said. “We’re able to put in an artistic touch and we’re able to build too.”

The goal seems to be inspired by a denial of human evolution a la Pro-Choice, a progressive conflation (PC) of sexes (female and male genetic identity), and progressive convergence (PC) of gender attributes (feminine and masculine mental and physical traits). Only then will there be political congruence (PC).

Kathleen Dehmlow (Pancho) died recently. Her obituary said she abandoned her family, when she got knocked-up by her husbands brother. She moved to California and left her family behind.

The Children wrote: "She will not be missed by Gina and Jay, and they understand that this world is a better place without her."

No mention of the father, who was last seen in Cleveland.

The poets tell how Pancho fell;
Lefty's living in a cheap hotel

The desert's quiet; Cleveland's cold
So the story ends, we're told

Pancho needs your prayers, it's true
But save a few for Lefty, too

He just did what he had to do
Now he's growing old

n.n. if they ban the Victoria's Secret fashion show from television, or even more ominously (for Victoria's Secret and the network who owns the broadcast rights) allow it but ban underwear and bathing suits, that would be a clear conflation of things that suggested an utter upending of the sense of all things. you can go see nude girls walking around at a strip club, but we don't need that crap on TV. this looks to me like the beginning of the end of an anachronistic icon whose peak cultural relevance past decades ago. probably after one of the winners posed in Playboy. sold a lot of issues, but put paid the currency of the crown. that the coup de grace is being delivered by the politically confused as part of the broader Attack of the Single Loopers is ugly, but shaming is rarely pretty. some people deserve. absent the bygone cultural institutions of nicer times past, shame is what we've got. sometimes it goes after Pogo and Roseanne, and sometimes it goes after Bill Clinton. and sometimes, and these are the most enjoyable times to me, they go after moribund institutions already on their heels, and the process ends up diminishing the power base of some of the most retrograde forces in the country. some bloggers call it "leftist autophagy" but the leftist thing doesn't fit precisely here. but it's hurting monied interests who don't have public interest in mind, and broadcast media interests who these days undermine the public discourse and aren't even interesting to look at. and the pageants really are weird, as are all the feeder pageants across the country, and the moms who encourage their daughters to participate and thereby forgo other more nourishing pursuits. good riddance to the crown.

The movie was terrible.

It was as if there were multiple parties providing completely different visions.....oh, right. There were.

Han Solo was in the Imperial troopers for 3 years.....and we know nothing about it.
Han Solo speaks Wookie, but we have no idea how or why.
Han Solo wants more than anything to get a starship to return to his lost love on his home planet....but for 3 years (in the troopers) is unable to...until he hooks up with a criminal who takes him to a much bigger criminal where "voila!" the girlfriend just happens to be!

What a horrific movie. And the numbers proves the public recognizes it too.

daskol said...

rhhardin: excellent point. women, or a spokesman of theirs, lead a movement to destroy the ratings of the preeminent pageant. we men should sit back and see whether the answer to your question reveals itself. most women mostly paid to talk on tv (not read news, talk) to mostly women audiences are heavier and a bit homelier than pageant contestants.
