Trump's antagonists are enjoying themselves over the break in the momentum toward a North Korean deal.

But the process isn't over, and I assume it's a dealmaking dance in which breaks like this a part of the process. Isn't that what Trump wrote in "The Art of the Deal" and has talked about innumerable times? Trump haters shouldn't exult over his failure until they see how this ends. And maybe even then, they shouldn't exult. Don't we all want a better, safer world? Or is seeing Trump fail better?

I wouldn't be surprised if Trump's early knee-jerk opponents end up strengthening his hand here and elsewhere.

Early decrying of the deficits in Trump's first budget, for instance, will likely give Trump a stronger hand in subsequent years to bend the cost curve down. Look for Trump to embrace something like Rand Paul's "Penny Plan" in future budget deals with congress, and get it.

The elites and a smattering of average folks are very invested in seeing Trump brought down any way possible. Very few Americans share this twisted desire, but it has especially infected an already untrustworthy DNC-Media behemoth. That in turn makes the Democrats believe they are in the majority. They think we ALL hate Trump like they do. It’s ruining the “news” business.

Rhetorical questions, as they say, but still: "we" don't..

Progs care about Trump failing. That will make the world better.

The whole Russia narrative is part of it: they eagerly undermine the polity, doing Russia's bidding.

The Primat der Innenpolitik has been prog MO for a century, now put on steroids by TDS.

But, as has happened several times now, their enjoyment is fuel for our deplorable Schadenfreude, once, OMG, Trump makes a denuclearizing deal after all.

Conservative hawks in Congress are happy too.

Not necessarily because Trump failed to make the summit happen.

But because they were opposed to it from the beginning and predicted it would be a failure. It's a case of "I told you so."

Was that a rhetorical question? Of course democrats/left/progressives prefer a Trump failure over world peace. They are against world peace and denuclearization unless initiated by a democratic president. It is no longer subtle.

Several conservative bloggers are happy too, for the same reason: They believe that the only real solution is regime change, and any negotiation with North Korea is automatically a major concession to them.

All the sanctions and shipping restrictions are still in place. Maximum pressure on Kim doesn't rely on Chinese cooperation, although it helps to have Xi on board. China has bigger problems to deal with, and they will do what's best for China. Kim can't rely on them and Russia to get around the sanctions and import restrictions. So, having cancelled the meeting, we hold the upper hand. Kim needs a meeting. Trump will take the meeting when Kim acts accordingly.

This is the kind of negotiating Obama didn't have the skills to carry out. For example, we all know what we gave up to Iran but what did we get from Iran in the JCPOA?

I don't care for Trump's character or behaviors. But if he could make some progress on security, that would be great. The thing is Ann, is there any evidence for what you're proposing? Winning the presidential campaign, Trump's main accomplishment to this point, is not the same as delicate negotiations with a foreign head of state.

Maybe it's a dance and 4-dimensional chess, etc, but is there any evidence that Trump knows how to do this or has done this in the past with successful outcomes? (He overpaid for the Plaza Hotel, he's declared bankruptcy at least 6 times, + has hurt his own chances for peace in Israel.)

You're making an assumption. You regularly shred other pundits when they bring the weak sauce.

As AA points out, Trump has said a thousand times you have to be prepared to walk away from the table--it's all over The Art of the Deal, it's all over his tweets from 2011, 2014, etc.

Trump is leaning on China on trade, has ordered a national security investigation (!) on the national security impact on the economy of the import of foreign cars, and has barred China from participating in naval exercises that Obama had them joining for years; Trump is citing Chinese aggressive moves in the Spratly Islands as the reason.

Who's putting the pressure on, and on whom?

Poor nonplussed Ann, having some trouble typing this morning:

Is Ann asking, or telling? Has Ann actually read The Art of the Deal? Ann once again neglects to inform her readers of something about which she's perfectly well aware: that the Art of the Deal was written by Tony Schwartz, who has been stricken by remorse at the propaganda he's been complicit in promoting:

"There are two Trumps. The one he presents to the world is all bluster, bullying and certainty. The other, which I have long felt haunts his inner world, is the frightened child of a relentlessly critical and bullying father and a distant and disengaged mother who couldn’t or wouldn’t protect him.

Trump’s temperament and his habits have hardened with age. He was always cartoonish, but compared with the man for whom I wrote The Art of the Deal 30 years ago, he is significantly angrier today: more reactive, deceitful, distracted, vindictive, impulsive and, above all, self-absorbed – assuming the last is possible."

Disingenuous Ann likes to maintain that the President isn't any different from other presidents, except for being funnier and smarter. Ann and much of her tribe think of the President as a fair dealer, an honest man, and a decent human being. Once again, you can judge the character of someone by assessing the qualities of the people they admire.

Dictators run on payoffs, paying off everybody who could cause violence in proportion to how much violence they could cause. It's not voluntary, it's required.

Payoffs consists of, for example, a license to run this or that industry, or trade, or something.

Trump targets the paid-off rather than the nation, and so undermines the whole system in a way it's not prepared to deal with. In particular Chinese companies.

This gives Trump a huge stick to go with minor carrots. The dictator is no longer better off refusing the deal because he'll be deposed.

Having a gab-fest with Little Rocket Man as a photo-op is hardly the point, and it seems that Trump more than his critics is able to understand that. If the Norks don't want to deal with the issues the easy way, Trump seems quite willing to turn up the pressure as high as necessary to convince them otherwise. Time will tell whether that approach is successful. Past experience shows that the alternatives haven't worked.

But the gloating by Trump haters extends far beyond the dealings with the Norks. Every morning, a glace at RCP's headlined stories shows how the theme never changes. 'Trump the dangerous buffoon' is the consistent storyline from the WaPo (Cilizza, Marcus, Robinson) and the NYT (everyone), as it is on MSNBC (Todd, Maddow, Matthews, etc.), CNN (all of them) and on and on. Each day's story follows the same pattern -- foreign affairs, the Russia collusion blather, Spygate, you name it.

Let's hope they keep it up. Trump is remarkably lucky in having these enemies. They have no idea how they are perceived outside the Amen chorus.

> Media gleefully and approvingly report on spies from FBI/CIA/DOJ/MI6 infiltrating Trump campaign "for their own good" while casually declining to ask why Hillary's campaign (after being actually hacked by Russians (allegedly) already) wasn't given the same "protection" by Comey and Crew

> Same media who pilloried Clapper for lying under oath now props him up as Savior of the Republic and makes him the spokes-hole for the Deep State with no trace of irony

> Cities all across California are joining the Trump lawsuit against California's new "sanctuary state" law, leading to a red wave that threatens to actually elect Republican Assembly and Senate candidates, along with propelling a Republican to the top of the Governor's race

Nobody really knows whats going on here but the players.

Who said what to who, on the inside, is not going to be known, really, until their memoirs come out, and even then the picture won't be complete until the secret communications are declassified, and even then questions will remain about it, due to, no doubt, critical people keeping things close to their chest.

FDR for instance did not let a lot about what he was thinking out. Therefore a very great deal about his intentions and decisions, especially in the run-up to WWII, are merely suppositions. It is clear that what is known about what he told even his closest confidants, and these are scarce, does not match what he told others. There is a great deal about this we will never know.

Trump seems to be a man who does compartmentalize like this. He seems open (the Rooseveltian radio talks are directly analogous to the Trumpian tweets), but he isn't.

Reagan had some of this, but he did leave a mass of private papers where he personally wrote down his ideas and analyses, as he was a compulsive writer. Nothing of this sort has turned up for his presidency. We can hope I suppose. I dont think that Trump, like Roosevelt, is inclined to put his thoughts down in text.

The result, as with all these things, will be the result.

Note: Inga is excused from that exercise as there will be many big words to confront and digest

2) Cancelled talks with Kim Jong-un

And just like that, ALL the NK/nuke leverage the Chinese sought to use in their direct trade negotiations with the US went ---POOF----!

I think Scott Adams nailed this. Trump has moved the deal over to a brand new place. Not ending the nuclear program, but getting rid of the nukes. And Kim understands that. If you convince him that he'll be safe by doing so, convince him that no one is going to betray him as they betrayed Gadhafi, Kim might show off at the summit by bringing all his nukes with him and piling them up at the border. Inspection program, anyone?
I keep seeing articles by all these experts saying things like, For decades, North Korea has ___. They seem to think there's this malevolent AI called North Korea. There isn't. For a long time, there was a loser despot called Kim Jong Il. Now there's a new guy called Kim Jong Un. he might also turn out to be a loser despot. What did Trump lose?

The Chinese have their own problem: the trade war that was halted pending Trump (Commerce Dept., SecState…) confirmed that they did not violate the 5/19 agreement. The US didn't give them anything. Trump hinted at easing sanction on ZTE. But in the US, the President cannot interfere in criminal investigation. Ergo, nothing in return for the Chinese concessions. The Chinese promised to lower their trade surplus with us.

Part of it is Trump showing he *will* walk out.

You can't negotiate if the other side knows you won't walk away from the table. When they know that, you get "deals" like the Iran deal or the Treaty of Versailles.

Part of it is also showing North Korea that Trump won't accept the previously accepted strategy of being told one thing, then having the requirements change on him mid-deal.

We won't know if it was a good move until the summit happens or doesn't happen, and even then, it could be a year or two before we know the ramifications. For know, wait and see is the right position to take.

To keep it simple, we'd like 2 things from North Korea:

1. Stop its nuclear missile program

Rocket Man is jittery, because when Communists/dictators/authoritarians open up their society they often get shot or hanged (see, Mussolini, Italy; see Ceausescu, Romania).

So, you have to do some hand holding, and tolerate some zig-zagging. Kim saw what happened to Ghaddafy after he gave up his nukes, so he's a little skittish. Not a big deal.

Inga: "Precisely. North and South Korea and China are probably happy to make this deal without the interference of Trump"

The level of ignorance in this statement is beyond description.

The ONLY thing that matters to China is its trade deals with the US (direct/bi-lateral AND NAFTA), where Trump is squeezing them and removing the horrific loophole that allows China to use Canada and Mexico as conduits to ship directly into the US and bypass taxes.

NK exists ONLY as a weapon China uses to leverage the west...and Trump, as with the Jerusalem embassy move, simply took that piece off the table.

The US provides SK security. The US holds all the cards in the trade negotiation with China. The US under Trump is accelerating expansion of our military and re-establishing a challenging military posture towards the Chinese.

The US IS the deal...because Trump has made that true again.

Meanwhile, the MS13 supporters cry and whine...

-- Please explain; I tried to clarify the point. People who thought Obama's plans were bad often did say "Let it burn." The implication is something is on fire, so you let it burn. And, the bad policies often did burn out after awhile. The stimulus failure eventually died; the ACA burned out too.

It was a political strategy that, since the Democrats and Obama weren't going to even entertain input from Republicans, it was best to just sit back and let them do what they wanted. If they left had enacted better policies, *it would not have been burning.*

They did not, however, send delegates to foreign countries to tell them, "don't deal with the elected president of the United States" or set up a #Resistance to act as a shadow government.

buwaya said...

"Precisely. North and South Korea and China are probably happy to make this deal without the interference of Trump"

Drago is correct, the whole point from the Chinese strategic perspective is about the US, primarily regarding trade and secondarily about Chinese power and influence. The US is simultaneously the guarantor of Chinese prosperity and its main strategic rival.

The US market is the greatest economic asset on earth. Access to it is El Dorado. China's interests re either Korea are trivial in comparison. And it's China that's keeping NK alive. NK was, post 1991, a Chinese pressure point vs the US and secondarily vs Japan. SK was incidental.

As for the US and the Pacific Rim, the US was already losing it pre-Trump. That's why the Chinese were happy to humiliate Obama. The nations of East Asia fear China, and would like to rely on their US alliances to keep China away.

But they have known for several years that the balance of power was shifting and that the US was not so likely to honor its commitments should it come to a showdown. This was, for instance, both Duterte's and Lee Kwan Yews opinions on the matter, that the US alliance had become a dead letter.

Republicans in Congress were willing to deal on multiple aspects of the ACA, most notably, would have let a stand-alone bill dealing with pre-existing conditions through Congress to decouple it from the ACA, but were shot down by the unwillingness of the Democrats in Congress to deal at all on the bill.

Some Republicans were even sympathetic, in part, to the Stimulus (provided it had been targeted, timely and temporary -- which pretty much every Republican knew wouldn't happen with a government program, but were willing to support the idea if it could be worked.)

The preparations had become rocky, some one was going to make a move to nix the deal and whoever did it would assume the upper hand in any resumption of negotiations, should they occur. Lil Kim now has to be the one to come asking for forgiveness.

The results of this deal making are enormous, far-reaching, could determine the future of life on earth; but it's still the same deal making as buying a used car. Kim has the car, we have the cash to purchase it. If he wants to improve his conditions, he has to make a sale. The worst we can do is continue life as before.

1. They get to rebuild North Korea which has been totally ruined while a Chinese client. Germany rebuilt East Germany which was supposedly in pretty good shape - and it was hugely expensive. North Korea is not supposed by anyone to be in good shape. So - South Korea take a gigantic economic hit
2. South Korea gets to be a Chinese client like North Korea so that the economic reconstruction will be supervised by China and North Korea. So South Korea economy will be run by Lil' Kim and the Chinese. We've seen the results of their previous economic work together. What a great - or, anyhow, what a different idea, South Korea.
3. Then South Korea goes forward as a Chinese client. Like Tibet and North Korea. And, South Korea wants this, says the left. I just wonder, y'know, just wonder if that is true.
