"South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held a surprise meeting at the demilitarized zone Saturday aimed at keeping inter-Korean relations, and a possible summit between Mr. Kim and President Donald Trump, on track."

"South Korea’s presidential office announced the two-hour meeting after it had wrapped up, saying the two leaders met on the north side of the demilitarized zone and discussed how to successfully stage a summit between Messrs. Trump and Kim" (WSJ).

The trick is to find a way for North Korea to want the deal more than we do. The ultimate success will depend a lot on the cooperation, or at least the acquiescence of China.

The two Koreas are the ones that should be doing most of the talking.

The US is involved due to the Nuke threats against the US.

Technically NK is still at war with SK.

No peace treaty has been signed yet...

Militarily, SK outside of nukes, chemical, and biological weapons is more powerful than NK.

NK is dependent on China due to their broken economy.

NK leadership needs outside perceived threat to stay in power.

Libya betrayal by US (Obama’s) is huge issue for NK.

I’m amazed dialogue is going so well and US has not given away the kitchen sink already, as we usually do.

Drago said...

I love how the lefties narratives change every single day as they react to the most superficial and singular manifestations of a deep and comprehensive negotiation with China that involves Trade, security and military moves across the entire region (not just the Koreas).

The Korean peninsula discussion is just one aspect of many that are in play as we speak and ALL the substantive discussions for that aspect are happening between US and China negotiators. The NK/SK can have as many photo ops as they'd like. In the end, NK will do what Xi dictates...which will depend on the outcome of the US/China talks.

But the lefty mob requires reinforcement that all their beliefs are super duper valid and that beast must be fed continuously lest armies of pussy-hatted Starbucks trashers take to the streets!

LOL

I do find it amusing that the lefties, after 24 hours of screeching about the failure of Trump to pull off the summit are now beginning to realize their mistake and are shifting to a -Moon / KJU- together will save the day narrative.

Hilarious.

“Sisi, who seized power in a coup, has cracked down in Egypt, where a brief flirtation with democracy during the Arab Spring resulted in a Muslim Brotherhood-dominated government (which Sisi ousted). The U.S. State Department says the most serious human-rights problems there involve “excessive use of force by security forces, deficiencies in due process, and the suppression of civil liberties.” Human Rights Watch says Sisi’s government “maintained its zero-tolerance policy towards dissent… and [continued] near-absolute impunity for abuses by security forces under the pretext of fighting

They didn’t talk. They were terrorists. Over.”

Trump also said in 2016 that Libya would be better off “if [Moammar] Gaddafi were in charge right now.” He once tweeted a quote from Benito Mussolini, the Italian fascist leader, and later defended the tweet, saying: “Mussolini was Mussolini ... It’s a very good quote. It’s a very interesting quote... what difference does it make whether it’s Mussolini or somebody else?”

Trump even said China’s brutal crackdown on protesters in Tiananmen Square in 1989 “shows you the power of strength,” contrasting the Communist Party’s action with the United States, which he said “is right now perceived as weak.” Trump made those comments in 1990. When asked about the remarks during the presidential debate in 2016, Trump defended himself and appeared to take the Chinese Communist Party’s view of the events at Tiananmen. He dismissed the deadly military response as a “riot.””

Relatives of some of those killed said the attack, which occurred after a group of gunmen stopped a convoy headed for the Saint Samuel monastery close to the southern Egyptian town of Minya, undermines the state of emergency in Egypt declared after a previous attack in April.

Videos of the attack began to surfaced on social media networks on Sunday, two days after 29 were killed in the attack on a desert road south of the capital. Coptic Christians in Egypt have long pointed to institutional prejudices against them because of their religion, notably in the courts, which they say fail to prosecute those who commit acts of violence against Christians. Eshhad, a project by the Cairo-based Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy which tracks persecution of Egypt’s Copts, found 36 examples of persecution in 2017 alone, including beheadings, targeted violence and the Minya bus attack.“

As a sign of low global esteem, it seems that M. Macron and Mr. Putin (yes, that one), currently meeting at a conference in St. Petersberg, are putting out a joint statement complaining of Trumps policies in re Iran and trade.

Just a manifestation of the Aristocracy and their constant struggle to put the genie of freedom back in it's bottle. They constantly assault the US from without and within.

Which raises interesting questions about, say, the point of Muellers investigations, no?

This has always been the same old fight. The global aristocracy has built a powerful apparatus in the US government.

The US political system and especially the MSM are so, so transparently corrupt.
Anyone paying attention can see through them.

This is a tribal war. Corruption is just a tool used by the aristocracy in a well established spoils system.

without Khomeini's rise, the likes of Mustafa chamran, might not have been able to carve Hezbollah from the amal militia, mugniyeh would still have been around causing trouble for Arafat's force 17, it was the fall of the shah, that provoked the grand mosque siege, which awoke the Wahhabi genie,

Cancelling the meeting was a necessary step in this negotiation.

China would like to have an agreement- there is literally no benefit to the Chinese to having North Korea armed with nuclear weapons. So I would put the emphasis on "cooperation".

Again, I don't know that there is a deal to be made here, but to make the best effort requires that a strong negotiating position be established before a summit takes place. Trump's gambit seems to be paying off....."unexpectedly".

On the contrary, Egypt has always had a functional government. Its the most continuously and consistently governed place on earth, dating back to the pharaohs.

The people running the government, at the too, have changed, but not under that. Egypt has had little open anarchy, and never widespread, no depopulations, no barbarian hordes rampaging through, little of populist jaqueries, none of that. Political-religious-ethnic murder on a retail basis, sure. Conquest, battles on its soil, sure. But through all that time the same landowners collected their rents from the same peasants, who were also reliably oppressed by the same tax collectors.

Its never been a nice government, never very honest, or fair, or terribly competent by the best prevailing foreign standards. But its been consistent. Its been there, and unavoidable, for 4000 years.

All of which is a very curious fact.

No.

North Korea is ancillary.

It is was because when that mountain collapsed on the Hydrogen Bomb test it changed the whole equation. North Korea is now a failed state with a failed nuke program that will take billions to restart and a nuclear volcano on China's border.

Most likely they have years before they can get a hydrogen bomb they can fit on a missile unless China just openly ships them one. China wont go that far. That makes it so the only countries NK can nuke are South Korea and China.

Not so useful.

China wants South Korea in one piece. During the reunification China correctly believes they will be able to push South Korea to their side.

As a side beneift South Korea rebuilds North Korea and pays for China's skulduggery in North Korea.

China still plays the long game.

Lol. In other words, what buwaya just said. So you do see the evidence.

But to spell it out for anyone who doesn't see what's risible about your response:

"We are at a low point now in global esteem after an earlier high point."

The "broad-based" anti-Americanism tends to correlate pretty strongly with the line "particular groups" happen to be taking. If Americans are bombing the hell out of your country, certainly you will take an anti-American line without any prompting from your PTB's palace scribes. But if you have "high esteem" for America when Clinton/Obama is bombing the hell out of some other guys, and "low esteem" when the same is done by Bush/Trump, then it's a good bet you're a mark for the propaganda of that "particular class".

For the most part, anti-Americanism that rises or falls based on who's in office is pretty much the product (and I mean "product" in its clear commercial sense) of an incestuous group of lackeys (media, academic, gov) of a "particular group" looking after its own interests.

Europe and Asia, just like America, are full of dingbats who have a touching faith in the "prestige" press.

“Hitler lost the election. He was appointed Chancellor by Hindenburg.”

“On this day in 1934, Adolf Hitler, already chancellor, is also elected president of Germany in an unprecedented consolidation of power in the short history of the republic.

In 1932, German President Paul von Hindenburg, old, tired, and a bit senile, had won re-election as president, but had lost a considerable portion of his right/conservative support to the Nazi Party. Those close to the president wanted a cozier relationship to Hitler and the Nazis. Hindenburg had contempt for the Nazis’ lawlessness, but ultimately agreed to oust his chancellor, Heinrich Bruning, for Franz von Papen, who was willing to appease the Nazis by lifting the ban on Hitler’s Brown Shirts and unilaterally canceling Germany’s reparation payments, imposed by the Treaty of Versailles at the close of World War I.”

OM: "What was the last book Inga read, do you think?"

I'm going to guess "How Hitler Was Democratically Elected" by Noam Chomsky.

Re Sisi, you have a choice.
Its the likes of him or the likes of Morsi. That is, something, or nothing, something much worse.

In the case of, say, Erdogan, it was the likes of him or some military junta.

In Duterte - he really does represent his people. He has enthusiastic popular support. There is literally no alternative. When he dies, or disgraces himself, there will be, but until then, deal. Something, or nothing.

The reality of the world is that in international affairs it is mainly a series of Hobsons choices.

Which was the terrible error of the Carter administration in re the Shah. They had a Hobsons choice. The intellectual traitor-class in the US of course was anti-Shah, because they expected, like their Soviet masters, that the winners would be the leftist student radicals so prominent on the streets. Or that it was a sort of February revolution, to be followed by October of course. Idiots.

Inga thinks she can "link" her way out of it.

Sorry Inga, by 1934 our little Chancellor had already become the little dictator.

Inga thinks Castro and Maduro and Xi and Kim Jong Un were "democratically elected" too.

LOL

Wow.

Just keep digging. It's fantastic.

“The left has never left off about how the Muslim Brotherhood was "democratically" elected.”

Hitler was democratically elected too. Doesn’t mean he wasn’t a dictator.

The people who voted for Hitler were leftists.

He "won" his election running as the leader of the National Socialist party.

Every single time it is the left.

“Weimar Germany had a parliamentary Reichstag, based on a quota system. The focus, like all parliamentary systems, is on the party, not the individual and parliamentary systems have multiple parties. They do not just have two as in the US, so having 50% of the vote or more is irrelevant, all that matters is that you have the largest minority and if that minority is insufficient for a clear majority as defined in their constitution, you simply form a coalition government.

Hitler becoming Chancelor in 1933 resulted from the democratically elected seats that his party held. As head of the party, Hitler could either be directly elected to a position, like the one he lost to Hindenburg, or he could gain the Chancellorship by his party having a clear majority in the Reichstag and get appointed by the President, OR HE COULD become Chancellor without a clear majority via a coalition government… It is the last option that saw Hitler rise to power and the “back room deals” many Americans lament as having got him there, were simply a normal part of forming a coalition government in a democratic parliamentary system. Hitler’s party was elected, it formed a legitimately democratic coalition government with a condition of that coalition being Hitler’s appointment to the chancellery… Which was just the German title (although much weaker position) of Prime Minister. So yes, Hitler was elected via his role as party leader within a democratic institution.

Whats funny is that Inga's own link gives her all the clues she needs to understand why the election of 1934 wasn't really democracy in action!

LOL

But we all know, Inga "don't do none of that there fancy book lernin' and analysis".....

Oh look, Inga has doubled down on the links in support of her assertion that dictators have democratic elections!!

Well played Inga.

Next up: How Mao campaigned vigorously to win his democratic contest against opposing parties!!

Too funny.

I'm betting Inga keeps this up for hours and hours.......LOL

Can someone remind me what Fidel Castro's big campaign themes for his last democratic election victory were?

I'm trying to see the world through the Inga Framework. LOL

I'm starting to really understand the lefty support for Kim Jong Un now....

The Democratic party controlled educational system is wall-to-wall hate America.
That is their message, all of it, nothing but, at the expense of literature and history. It is their religion.

You may have to be in a truly core Democratic constituency to see it in its full expression, but this is what they truly believe, and when they have full control you see it as they intend.

You have no idea.

Which was the terrible error of the Carter administration in re the Shah.

Carter was dealing with the 1974 Democrat landslide after the Nixon coup.

He sent Andrew Young, his UN ambassador who was not the sharpest tool in the shed, who reported that Khomeini, living in exile in France, was a "saint."

The rest is an example of Democrat foreign policy since Truman.

Inga: "Drago, my link proved you wrong,...."

LOL

Nope.

But I do appreciate you taking time out from vigorously defending MS13/hamas and the rest to lecture us on how dictators compete democratically.

It's fantastic.

You are such a pitch perfect representative of your causes....

LOL
