"Oh, I'm surprised at that," says George Stephanopoulos when Ronan Farrow tells him that Hillary Clinton cancelled an interview with him...

... after "her folks" heard he was "working on a big story" — "the Weinstein stuff."

Reported at Mediaite, with video that allowed me to transcribe the "Oh, I'm surprised at that," which I find funny, and Mediaite left out.

I find it funny — and I believe this is why Mediaite left it out — because I read Stephanopoulos to be lying. He knows why Hillary Clinton wouldn't want to be interviewed by someone who's digging into the Harvey Weinstein story.

1. Hillary was part of what the New York Times called Weinstein's "complicity machine":
In late September [2016], emails show, he was discussing a documentary television show he was working on with Hillary Clinton. He had long raised campaign cash for her, and her feminist credentials helped burnish his image — even though Tina Brown, the magazine editor, and Lena Dunham, the writer and actress, each say they had cautioned Mrs. Clinton’s aides about his treatment of women....

Over the years, Mr. Weinstein provided [theClintons] with campaign cash and Hollywood star power, inviting Mrs. Clinton to glittery premieres and offering to send her films. After Mr. Clinton faced impeachment in the Monica Lewinsky scandal, he donated $10,000 to Mr. Clinton’s legal defense fund. Mr. Weinstein was a fund-raiser and informal adviser during Mrs. Clinton’s 2000 Senate campaign, a guest in her hotel suite when she won and a host of an A-list victory party. He was an early backer of both her presidential bids.
2. Hillary was vulnerable to questioning about her protection of Bill Clinton over the years, and Ronan Farrow was emerging as the one who was fighting to take sexual harassment and rape seriously. Hillary's people were right to worry that he would have the nerve to really push her on questions about her behavior toward the women whose voice Farrow was about to amplify.

Stephanopoulos obviously knows this. He looked ludicrous playing the naif.

rh...Weinstein did the same thing to stars and star wannabes that Bill Cosby did to so many women. But unlike Cosby who at least gave them a date rape drug, Weinstein made the stay awake all night and pretend to enjoy it.

So Weinstein was using women "trafficked" by agents and parents to become Stars. Using women that way is the essence of Clinton Evil that was spread all over the world.

Well, he didn't say he was astonished. Stephanopolous was using "surprised" according to Noah Webster's correct usage, (when confronted by his wife while in congress with a maidservant).

Steve Sailer has expressed a suspicion that Ronan Farrow's drive to ruin Harvey Weinstein was motivated at least partially by his anger that Weinstein helped restore Woody Allen's career as a director.

I think Lena Dunham hurt Hillary Clinton much more than Harv did or could have.

The #metoo thing was supposed to happen in a Hillary Clinton presidency so we could all make new laws about sexual behavior. It didn't turn out that way and basically only ruined Hollywood. Hah! I'm glad everyone now understands that Hollywood was just a casting couch and the ideals of feminine beauty that were forced upon us reflect Harvey's tastes more than Anna Wintour's, but Hillary could have had 10 more Harveys (probably did/does) and been fine but another Lena Dunham and she would've lost even more states.

Her campaign was a mess and didn't understand that.

For that matter, they don't seem to care to cover anyone's complicity with Weinstein.

@Michael K,

Re Chappaquiddick

We saw it last weekend and it is well done.

I saw it and liked it too. If that movie is made in 1972, Teddy's career is toast.

One nagging point. In his written statement, 10 hours after the accident, Teddy says he can't remember how he got out of the car.

The car turned over and sank into the water and landed with the roof resting on the bottom. I attempted to open the door and the window of the car but have no recollection of how I got out of the car.

This is a lie. He would remember how he exited the car. The car is submerged in only 4 or 5 feet of shallow water. He either opened the door or rolled down the window.

So, Why would he lie about not remembering such a basic fundamental detail? He repeated this lie a few days later on National TV. What's to gain or lose by saying, truthfully, I pushed open the door, squeezed myself out and swam to the top?

Michael K said...

What's to gain or lose by saying, truthfully, I pushed open the door, squeezed myself out and swam to the top?

My understanding, as I have never tried it, is that opening a car door under water is impossible. Rolling down a window, with a hand cranked window, would probably be possible. My 1953 Buick Skylark convertible had hydraulic power windows. Did his car ? I had a 1968 Ford Mustang convertible and I can't remember how the windows worked. Electric windows would probably not work under water.

I don't know the answer.

Michael K said...

I don't remember if the divers ever mentioned the door or windows.

Bay Area Guy said...

"My understanding, as I have never tried it, is that opening a car door under water is impossible"

That's my understanding too.

Which means Teddy didn't escape by opening the door.

Which means Teddy could have only escaped through the window. But that raises a buncha problems: (a) no evidence that rescue diver (John Farrar) found the car with the window open, (b) the open window should have been an escape route for MJK or at least, a rescue route by Teddy and his 2 lackeys who claimed they dove down several times to try to pull her out and (c) the open window presumably would have flooded the car, causing MJK to drown. But apparently the diver found her sitting up right with a large air pocket, wherein she suffocated.

If no exit thru door was possible, and no window was open, that means Teddy was not in the car and lied about everything.

Just food for thought, no grand conspiracy theories.

Doesn't that depend on how much water is inside the car (i.e. to equalize the pressure)

Also, how long did it take to sink? He may have opened the door while it was still on the surface/near the surface.

Michael K said...

BAG, all good points.

Also good points but I think I have read that it is impossible to open a car door under water,

This PM article, which won't let me read because of my ad blocker, says roll down the windows.

I think power windows would probably fail.

Darrell said...

Water surged into the car through the left front window, which was rolled down, and the two right windows, which were blown out by impact. “I remember thinking as the cold water rushed in around my head that I was, for certain, drowning. But somehow I struggled to the surface alive.” (In subsequent public comments, Kennedy never has been able to recall how he escaped from the car underwater. He does recall “the movement of Mary Jo next to me, the struggling, perhaps hitting or kicking me.”]

Upon surfacing, Kennedy “was swept away by the tide that was flowing at an extraordinary rate through that narrow cut” and “couldn’t swim at that time because of the current.”

Good find on the Chappaquiddick car thing.

It's surprising, if the windows were open, that Gargan and the other guy could not find her. She was alive for hours.

Darrell said...

Ted Kennedy didn't abandon Mary Jo Kopechne when his car plunged off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island ... he didn't even know she was in the car, according to a retired CIA operative.
We've been asked not to use the CIA person's name, but he worked for the agency for decades. He says back in 1969, Kennedy was romantically involved with the wife of a very powerful politician, and if word got out about the affair Kennedy was afraid it would ruin his career.
The operative says the night of the accident Kennedy and some of his buddies were all drunk and drove to a party on the Island. They went there because the politician's wife was at the party and Kennedy wanted to hook up with her. Mary Jo Kopechne was at the party ... she and Kennedy were acquaintances but not romantically involved.
According to the operative, Mary Jo was drunk, said she had a headache, got up and said she was going into one of the bedrooms to lie down.
At some point later in the evening, Kennedy and the politician's wife wanted "some alone time" and didn't want to do anything in front of the group, so they got in the car and drove ... eventually plunging off the bridge into the water. They both swam to shore safely. The operative says both were not injured.
The operative says unbeknownst to either Kennedy or the politician's wife, Mary Jo apparently was unable to sleep in the house because of the noise, so she went into the back seat of the car where she fell asleep ... which is where she died. At least one person at the party knew Mary Jo had gone into one of the cars and told authorities that after the accident.

More on Joe Gargan, who tried to find Mary Jo.

According to The Boston Globe, a 1988 interview Gargan gave cast light on the machinations that occurred after the car plunged into the waters and did not cast Ted Kennedy in a favorable light. Gargan “claimed that Kennedy wanted to create a scenario in which Gargan would ‘discover’ the accident and inform the police that Kopechne had left the party alone and driven off the bridge. Gargan heatedly rejected the plan,” the Globe reported.

Teddy was still in the Senate then.

For that matter, why weren't there more warnings from all her dear friends in Hollywood? Chuck Challenge #2

Give a germane comment about Hillary and Weinstein's relationship (either way)

Chuck Challenge #3 (This is the tough one)

Do not, once, in this entire thread, change the subject to Trump, attacking other commenters for defending Trump, allude to Trump or give a passing reference to the WH or any of it's occupants in any way shape or form. Address ONLY Hillary, Weinstein, Ronam or Stephanopoulos

Chuck Challenge #4

As a Life Long Republican, avoid any 'whataboutism' in slurring the Republican party and anything related to Fox News. Any real Republican paying attention would have ZERO problem with this. In fact, any real Republican would be in a pretty constant state of fury at the majority of the media.

I was under the impression that as long as there was a certain amount of water in the car to equalize pressure, it would be possible to open the door. I've done recreational diving in lakes with sunken vehicles as objects of interest and can say that fully flooded objects can be manipulated. Failing that, I think it's possible to roll down the windows, or even have the windows shatter from the pressure differential (though unlikely this would have happened at 4-5 foot water depth). This wouldn't change the fact that a trapped air bubble would give Mary Jo an airspace where she could suffocate instead of drown.

There is an intentionally sunken naval vessel in the Florida Keys at 130 ft. depth that still has an air pocket you can poke your head into. The dive guides warn you not to take out your respirator in the pocket because there's no oxygen left to breathe.
