Are you finding Comey compelling?

We're watching the Stephanopoulos interview. Are you?

Not watching--forgot about it, to tell you the truth, although I have enjoyed Trump's tweets about Comey.

Comey has a Uriah Heep quality to him, and Trump is New York-funny.

Stephanopoulos just reminds me of the Clinton days....

Yes, he struggles to explain his attempt to not be political when he made the announcement about the unread Clinton emails that were being investigated and probably lead in part to her defeat, but when he talks about the dinner with Trump etc and what was said his moral core and honesty strike shine through.

JackWayne said...

I dunno. Once a person exposes themselves as dishonest and a liar, it pretty hard for me to think that person ever speaks the truth.

rcocean said...

A person who sees moral equivalence in Charlottesville, who talks about and treats women like they're pieces of meat, who lies constantly about matters big and small and insists the American people believe it, that person's not fit to be president of the United States, on moral grounds. And that's not a policy statement. Again, I don't care what your views are on guns or immigration or taxes.

There's something more important than that that should unite all of us, and that is our president must embody respect and adhere to the values that are at the core of this country. The most important being truth. This president is not able to do that. He is morally unfit to be president.

What a pompous Twit. Damn, what an EGO!

Just the usual Comey, blah, blah.

I was struck by the hostility he had toward Trump - even in their first meeting.

His defense of the E-mail investigation was lame, as was his defense of the Doisser and not telling Trump on Day 1, that it was financed by the Clinton campaign.

Comey's tragic flaw (though not his only one) may be grandiosity. He came to believe that he and he alone could take the appropriate steps in these difficult matters. The report and news conference regarding the Clinton email investigation were great mistakes. These set the stage for a series of continuing bad judgment thereafter.

Snark said...

That was a strong ending. Well done, editors.

Thank you for watching so that we don't have to (you are going to notes, right?).

But let us not forget what this paragon of truth and character said a couple of months ago:

"Special Agent Andrew McCabe stood tall over the last 8 months, when small people were trying to tear down an institution we all depend on. He served with distinction for two decades. I wish Andy well. I also wish continued strength for the rest of the FBI. America needs you.".

JackWayne said...

“Bravo, Comey. He was in an untenable position, he made a mistake, but his decency shined through.”

Seems to me that he put himself into an untenable position. Which was his mistake. And the decency you see must have been the sun shining out of his ass.

chickelit said...

Comey personifies swamp creature. That is an important distinction about him to make. Swamp creature means unelected person making key decisions. Is there a higher ranking person than he who is under scrutiny? I suppose that Lynch is one. I also suppose that these people feel themselves so chosen as to almost feel elected to their cause. They are mistaken.

chickelit said...

Comey, Lynch, etc all. They are just henchpeople.

FIDO said...

His actions or the actions he allowed in the non-investigation of Hillary really makes me question everything about him.

He was in a difficult position and he punted and tried to have it both ways. There were also the lies he told on the way, which R/V wants to disregard for some reason.

I don't know what to think of him, but his credibility has taken a huge hit.

Tipping points are by definition “untenable.” Comey was part of the tipping point regarding Hillary’s election. He tried to arrest it, to toy with it, to make it happen or not happen. He should have never had that unelected power to begin with.

Darrell said...

Special Agent Andrew McCabe could have walked upright under a snake's belly over the last 8 months, when good people were trying to restore an institution we all depend on. He made a mockery of public service for two decades--serving himself and one political party--Democrats. I wish Andy what he deserves. A death alone in prison. I also wish continued strength to remake the FBI into a law enforcement agency. America needs you.

Trump complains about Session's disloyal service, just as he does about Comey and neither are his personal servants. Trump has wiped out his own appointees in the West Wing and elsewhere. Is Comey responsible?

As for those who don't like Stephanopolous, I agree, but he has asked good questions and he has required thoughtful answers from Comey.

rcocean is complaining about Comey's ego or is it that he hit a nerve by calling super-egotist Trump morally unfit? It occurs to me that Trump is not smart enought to give the complex answers coming from Comey but Comey was wrong when he said Trump was not stupid.

The transcript is unreadable. This guy really was the Forest Gump of the FBI.

Thinking Hillary would be defeated if she were indicted (probably true), he provided cover to McCabe to whitewash the investigation.

Feeling guilty over the whitewash, he trashed Hillary at a press conference calling her "extremely careless"

The trashing of Hillary helped contribute to her loss, Comey. Don't you get it? Don't you understand that's why the left doesn't like you?

To further purge his guilt, after wanting to stay on as Director of FBI under Trump, but being fired, he leaks a stupid CYA memo, to trigger a Special Counsel to nail Trump, without evidence of a crime. The guy is so wacked out.

I was thinking about the election just now. Hillary lost the electoral college because she did not appeal to enough of the people in the "flyover" states. She had the dem nomination locked up, she could have eased up on aspects of her hard-left promised policies & she would have beaten Trump handily. A clear defense of the individual right to own a firearm, opposition to abortion after the second trimester, even a principled defense of religious freedom and freedom of speech would have done it.
But she could not bend. I don't believe she has principles to violate, I think that she believed that the votes of the flyover people didn't matter. She really did not give a damn what the people in Ohio and Wisconsin who were persuadable thought.

Below is from his book. If Comey is this naïve, it's not surprising that the FBI under his leadership was so corrupt. That's not decency, that's either pure stupidity or dishonesty.

"“Contributing to this problem, regrettably, was President Obama. He had jeopardized the Department of Justice’s credibility in the investigation by saying in a 60 Minutes interview on Oct. 11, 2015, that Clinton’s email use was “a mistake” that had not endangered national security,” Comey writes. “Then on Fox News on April 10, 2016, he said that Clinton may have been careless but did not do anything to intentionally harm national security, suggesting that the case involved overclassification of material in the government.”

“President Obama is a very smart man who understands the law very well. To this day, I don’t know why he spoke about the case publicly and seemed to absolve her before a final determination was made. If the president had already decided the matter, an outside observer could reasonably wonder, how on earth could his Department of Justice do anything other than follow his lead.”

“The truth was that the president — as far as I knew, anyway — he had only as much information as anyone following it in the media. He had not been briefed on our work at all. And if he was following the media, he knew nothing, because there had been no leaks at all up until that point. But, his comments still set all of us up for corrosive attacks if the case were completed with no charges brought.”

n.n said...

It seems that Comey has been deemed nonviable, perhaps unworthy, and the left have selected their sacrificial baby. So, Comey provided the cover for Obama to spy, Clinton to collude, and the DNC to deny the nomination to the Jew, and later a #MeToo warlock hunt to deny civil rights and further disenfranchise Americans. Democrats, and establishment, may want to review the selective motives and process failures that rationalized and enabled a multi-trimester warlock trial.

n.n said...

Then there is the disenfranchised, now aborted, Democrat insider: Deep Plunger. People are vulnerable to affirmative action following process failures.

So, in other words, Obama obstructed justice.

Maybe Chuck, Inga, or ARM could answer that.

Yancey Ward said...

Exhelodrvr1,

That is a fascinating excerpt. I would hope that Comey really isn't so naive to not really understand the purpose of Obama's two public statements, but I do wonder. In any case, if Comey really believes Obama wasn't updated on the investigation, he is a fool or a liar, and there were leaks in the media, or the reporters were lying in several instances, though I do note that the numbers of leaks were far fewer than the deluge coming out after Trump won the election.

Stephanopolous interviewing Comey. Two weasels mating.

An honest investigator would have conducted an honest investigation of Hillary. You just pimping us out, Jimmy.

Beldar said...

He is a weasel. Any lawyer who deliberately leaks confidential communications with his principal -- even if the communications weren't as attorney-client, but merely intra-Executive Branch communications -- is a weasel and an oath-breaker and should lose his law license. The notion of Jim Comey selling a book with this title, of him lecturing at a reputable law school on legal ethics, makes me want to vomit.

He's also still peddling a boatload of crap that he very well knows is crap about the Clinton email investigation -- specifically, the utter fiction that there's no evidence of the required intent to violate the law on Clinton's part. Under at least one felony statute under which she should have been charged, there is no requirement whatsoever that the prosecution prove an intent to harm America's national security. The only intent question is: Did she intend to use a private server, and that's proved beyond all doubt, not just a reasonable doubt. Moreover, when a witness has repeatedly signed documents acknowledging her knowledge of the classification laws; when she's written memos preaching it to her subordinates and disciplining those who broke the rules even innocently; when she's told repeated mutually inconsistent lies about her actions and her motivations and the state of her knowledge and intentions; and when she has the biggest motive on the planet to cover all of this up, because it's in the way between her and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, even a first-year prosecutor could make an absolutely compelling case of intent to violate three or four other statutes with higher intent requirements, including certainly obstruction of justice and mail & wire fraud in addition to security/classification crimes.

Comey is not stupid. He's deliberately but wildly disingenuous about all this. He'll look you in the eye and say we don't prosecute people for crimes without a showing of specific intent, when that's utter BS -- I can point you to cases he personally has prosecuted or overseen in which the law doesn't require that, and likewise, cases he's personally prosecuted in which the only proof of intent has been circumstantial (it always is, unless admitted by the defendant, for pete's sake!).

He thinks he's fundamentally different from and better than Donald Trump, but in fact they both think -- like the Clintons think -- that they are above the law.

So yeah: He's a weasel, a dissembler about the law and the justice system whose credibility on every issue is suspect, an unethical advocate who without question should lose his law license and be shunned by all who respect the Rule of Law, and in all probability an as-yet-unindicted felon on charges (including obstruction of justice) connected to his self-confessed leaking in violation of DoJ rules and policies, even if he carefully avoided leaking classified information.

Hammond X. Gritzkofe said...

Not sure if I buy this completely. Pretty much every Clinton financial scandal through the decades had the Rodham brothers in there somewhere getting their piece of the action.

Matt Sablan said...

Wait. So Comey didn't know Obama was using Clinton's server and therefore had more information about it than the media? That's... An odd position for him to take.

Bruce Hayden said...

One of the things that messed up Comey with the email scandal was the intervention of AG Lynch after all those classified emails were found on Weiner's laptop. Apparently, the NYPD had the laptop, and wasn't sharing. She broke it loose by threatening to investigate the NYPD (again) for the Eric Gardner death while in their custody, as a civil rights deprivation. Last thing they wanted was an intensive FBI investigation into their everyday affairs. And then, it fell into the hands of the EDNY, which wasn't zeleous enough in killing the investigation, until she threatened to transfer it to her protege, Preet Bahara, who had replaced her as SDNY USA, where the two of them, along with Comey, who had been USA there under Bush, had picked almost all of the prosecutors. Meanwhile, the laptop, and nothing else, was apparently stolen out of a locked car, and disappeared from the scene completely, despite containing apparently some 650k emails, many, maybe even most, the involving the daily life of the woman who was almost President. Emails never apparently backed up. Stuff supposedly that not even Lynch could keep her from being indicted for, and stuff that would have lost most of the rest of the states that she lost in the election. Even allegations that she had made upwards of six trips to Jeffrey Epstein's Pediphile Island (to Bill's >= 20 trips there). And maybe answered, for all times, the question about the relationship between Crooked Hillary and Weiner's erstwhile wife, Huma Abedin. Were they lovers? Or was she the daughter that Clinton really wanted, but got a charmless dullard instead. We will never know - Lynch's coverup was successful, with the evidence conveniently disappeared.

The tip of this scandal appears in the recent OIG report. From that, it appears that McCade was involved from the first, as well as his staff, including Lisa Page, but that their boss, Comey, may have initially out of the loop, and that part of what he may have been doing with the reopening, then closing the email investigation so quickly, was playing catchup. All this stuff had been going on during the last weeks of the campaign, very possibly behind his back, with his senior staff working with AG Lynch and her senior staff, to kill the scandal, so that it didn't kill Clinton's bid for the Presidency. He had made promises to Congress to keep them up to date, and, I think that he really didn't want responsibility for electing her in such an underhanded way, to have had his department used that way, so politically. Just imagine what someone with Comey's sense of moral certainty and right would have done, being faced with being seen as an accomplice there.

The nice thing here is that it is likely that we will ultimately find some of these answers from the ongoing OIG investigation. Not the contents of the so conveniently disappeared laptop, of course, but the behind the scenes maneuvering going on involving AG Lynch, her senior staff, senior FBI staff, and the EDNY prosecutors, in the month or so between when the laptop was found by the NYPD, and when Comey reexonerated Crooked Hillary.

David Begley said...

Let’s talk about moral fitness to be President. Hillary set up a private server and used it to transmit classified info. But why the private server? So she and Bill could run their bribery scheme! She then has her lawyer delete the emails with the evidence of bribery! Why can’t anyone else see that.

The real obstruction of justice was by Comey! Why didn’t he seize Hillary’s server? Why did he let Cheryl Mills destroy evidence of a crime?

Comey told McCabe and Strzok to sandbag and point shave the investigation. Make it look real but don’t try real hard. Since Comey is so tall he must have played basketball. He knows all about point shaving.

I hope Brett Baier picks up on this.

Thats also the testimony, under oath, where Brennan completely contradicted Comey regarding congressional notification.

That really sums it up, doesn't it?

Someone that "smart" (really a "sort of a god") knew what he was saying and what the import was and implicitly understood his message would be transmitted to all the dem/lefty/LLR minions to help "guide" them in their actions and statements.

I never saw any evidence of this.

Obama's on camera as saying that for the Supreme Court to strike down a "duly constituted law" would be "unprecedented."

That's some weapons-grade incompetence right there for a lawyer. I mean, they didn't touch on Marbury v. Madison in law school? Or was he just paying attention.

Then there's the time he demonstrated he didn't understand the difference between comprehensive auto insurance coverage and liability-only coverage, thinking liability insurance "isn't serious insurance."

Then there was turning bankruptcy law upside down during the Detroit bailout. And then his rule by decree when it comes to immigration law, which was itself impeachable.

No, Obama's not a "very smart man who understands the law very well." Quite the opposite.

Bravo, Comey. He was in an untenable position, he made a mistake, but his decency shined through.

Coming for the same fools who screamed for his firing immediately before the election.

You people are insane. You really are.

No, but he played one on television.

Why did you start writing your conclusion 2 months before you even interviewed her or Cheryl Mills or Heather Samuelson? Did you do that because Obama had already told you what the findings were supposed to be? I guess we know who his Higher Loyalty was for.

"What crimes has Donald trump committed while in office? That's what counts isn't it?"

Well, he's ordered two missles strikes on Syria without Congressional authorization or (more important) approval by the UN Security Council. He's had his ambassador Nikki Haley at the UN state threaten more strikes on Syria. That is also illegal under the UN Charter.

"Once you acknowledge that Trump is fundamentally no less moral than his predecessors, saying he's morally unfit kind of loses its meaning. And what has he actually done as President that is immoral?"

Ummm...that's an odd reading of what I said. I said his predecessors in office have been no more moral than Trump. They've all been moral monsters.

Ordering missile strikes on another country without UN approval and Congressional authorization is illegal; I think that qualifies as immoral.

No. Next question.

Listening to Comey is like getting a shot of Novocain in your brain; gradually your sense of reality goes numb - because he has lost all sense of reality. On his watch it became evident that the Secretary of State had exposed US secrets over and over but he never saw it, he says. He was busy, busy, busy. With what? What was more important? No one believes him - not even our favorite lefty's who are comparing him to Donald Trump.

The key point to me is that Comey says that it could not be proved that Hillary knew her actions would result in transferring US secrets to Russia and to anyone else hostile to the US who penetrated her pathetic firewall. Therefore, he says, Hillary could not be prosecuted as a spy but only reprimanded as an idiot.

But first, the fact is that Hillary had secrets of every level of classification on her server which was an obvious target of our enemies and (which, in relation to the capacities of codebreakers, was essentially unprotected) and so she was exposing codes and methods.

Then, second, did anyone every tell her that her server was exposing secrets and endangering national security?
There are only two possibilities - she was told; she was not told.
1.
She was told and continued to expose secrets. Then she was deliberately harming the US and should have been prosecuted.
2.
She was not told. But this is impossible. It is impossible that the NSA, the FBI and the CIA were just unaware of Hillary's server. It is impossible that they did not all, one after another, tell her to stop using it or she would expose national secrets. But she persisted. So she knowingly exposed secrets and they knowingly let her. Speaks for itself.

And anyhow, it is also impossible that she had to be told while Secretary of State of the danger to the US if her e-mails exposed codes, plans and methods, hearing this for the first time. "The most qualified person ever to run for President" DID know that breaking the rules for preserving national secrets would expose national secrets and she knew it long before she was Secretary of State. She learned it while the wife of a President.

Yes, she knew. And furthermore: The idea that Hillary didn't get prosecuted because poor, dopey little Hillary just didn't know about the big, bad Russians and their code-breaking skills. What kind of a defense is that when the person we are talking about is running for President?

Comey and Hillary should just stop talking. They are powerful still and they can force people into silence but inside people's heads the thinking still goes on. The more they talk the more people have to think about and (based on Cookie's thoughts and other lefty's) the gag reflex is kicking in.

Unless we've surrendered our sovereignty to the UN when I wasn't looking, I don't see how what that body of reprobates thinks has any bearing on legality.

As for congress, well, call me when that body of spineless weasels want to do their constitutionally-mandated jobs and I'll gladly listen.

That was Grade A stupidity by our faculty lounge leader. He didn't need to say anything publicly, "Lynch would know that without being told".

But of course, he couldn't help himself. Lordy, Lordy did that man love to hear himself talk.

You obviously don't know your Constitution. Under the Supremacy Clause, any treaties we enter into--such as the UN Charter--become "the Supreme law of the land." Thus, as per the UN Charter, we are prohibited from initiating (or even threatening) military strikes against other countries...except when we receive approval by the UN Security Council or to defend ourselves or an ally against an attack that has already been launched or is imminent. As neither of these conditions apply, we have no valid basis in launching missiles at Syria, even if the poison gas attack actually happened and even if Assad released it, (both unconfirmed at this time).

Why should Congress authorize missile strikes against Syria, (even if their authority was enough in itself without the UN)?
