Happiness is a warm gun.

"Sir Paul McCartney remembers Beatles icon John Lennon in New York march against gun violence."
"One of my best friends was killed in gun violence right around here," he said, "so it's important to me."

He added he was unsure if gun violence can be ended, adding: "But this is what we can do, so I'm here to do it."

ADDED: Perhaps you didn't know that the phrase "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" was based on a headline on a gun magazine. John talks about that in the clip I've embedded, and here's Rolling Stone's description of the song (which it ranked, in 2011, as #24 on its list of "100 Greatest Beatles Songs" (personally, I ranked it #1 for a long time (and don't have any current ranking))):
The title was inspired by a headline in a gun magazine George Martin had showed Lennon that read Happiness is a Warm Gun — a variation on Peanuts cartoonist Charles Schulz's 1962 bestseller Happiness Is a Warm Puppy. "I thought it was a fantastic, insane thing to say," Lennon said. "A warm gun means that you just shot something."
Remember "Happiness Is a Warm Puppy"? It's kind of the worst of "Peanuts":
There were very rare moments of soft cheese in Peanuts'piquancy. For example, Lucy hugging Snoopy and declaring "Happiness is a warm puppy." That moment turned into a pioneering "book," composed of "Happiness is … " messages with accompanying drawings by Schulz, that became the No. 1 "nonfiction" work of 1963, and a prime mover in the Peanuts merchandising empire...

In the strip, Schulz would mock both merchandising and himself. When Lucy tried a second time to snatch Snoopy's warmth for her own happiness, he growled back, "My mother didn't raise me to be a heating pad!" Schulz himself said it best: "Anybody who says Peanuts is cute is just crazy." But he also enabled the merchandising machine....
I associate that non-edgy commercialization of "Peanuts" with a lot of 1960s/1970s idiocy, especially that atrocious cartoon "Love Is..." Unless I'm mistaken, every page of "Happiness is a Warm Puppy" begins with "Happiness is..." and some other damned nice thing. I'm trying to look inside the book at Amazon, and I can't see enough pages to be sure, but I'm grossed out by the introduction: "Now more than ever, we need the simple exuberance that Charles Schulz and his gang of Peanut-sized philosophers so perfectly express."

Oh, that's a new introduction, written for the 2006 edition. I guess "Now more that ever" meant now that we've got the worst President ever, George Bush. Anyway, the original edition came out before the arrival of The Beatles and even before John F. Kennedy was — bang bang shoot shoot — shot.

When The Beatles did arrive, they sold the ultimate niceness: Love. And then we lapped up "Love is..."

Click to enlarge. Yes, adult partners are pictured as naked juveniles who have no genitalia but who are sexually attracted to each other and go to bed together, dressed, at long last, in pajamas. This one-panel comic has been running, in that mind-crushingly limited form, since 1970. I certainly haven't read even a small percentage of the panels that have run over the decades, but I'm just going to bet that neither the man nor the woman has ever said anything as rejecting as "My mother didn't raise me to be a heating pad!"

Hey, McCartney, why not head over to Chicago, Baltimore, St Louis... and tell those people to quit killing each other and innocent bystanders. If you're not willing to do that, then turn in your Sir card.

A fundamental, but seldom discussed reality of banning guns, other than faciliating government tyranny up to and including mass murder, is that the streets end up belonging to the physically strong and mean. Re what Oso Negro wrote about Sir Paul's armed bodyguards: today's (or maybe last night's) Instapundit has two worthwhile articles on Herr Oberlieutenant Hogg's Kindermarchen: one is about all the "derp" coming out of the Anti-Gun Jugend; and another talking about how the march itself as well as many celebrities participating are protected by armed guards. No surprise on that last one: the priesthood of the Anointed must be safeguarded at all costs!

One of the articles has a photo of Herr Oberlieutenant Hogg at the rally giving the clenched-fist salute to his troops. Perfect. The writer refers to him as "the most punchable face on television today," and looking at that photo of the little twerp, you can see why.

Akin to "Love Is...", another 70s bit of trite:

"Love means never having to say you're sorry"

From Wiki:

"Love means never having to say you're sorry" is a catchphrase based on a line from the Erich Segal novel Love Story and was popularized by its 1970 film adaptation starring Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal. The line is spoken twice in the film: once in the middle of the film, by Jennifer Cavalleri (MacGraw's character), when Oliver Barrett (O'Neal) apologizes to her for his anger; and as the last line of the film, by Oliver, when his father says "I'm sorry" after learning of Jennifer's death...

...The line has also been criticized or mocked, for suggesting that apologies are unnecessary in a loving relationship. Another character played by O'Neal disparages it in the 1972 screwball comedy What's Up, Doc?: Barbra Streisand's character says "Love means never having to say you're sorry." while batting her eyelashes, and O'Neal's character responds in a deadpan voice, "That's the dumbest thing I ever heard."

I feel like going and reading 'Jonathan Livingston Seagull' now.

Here's an interesting story about gun control I just read about. In the early Soviet Union ordinary citizens were, of course, forbidden to own arms. Communist Party members, however, in deference to their past history as revolutionaries were allowed to keep their guns. Kirov was a personal friend of Stalin and the poobah in Leningrad. He was shot by a fellow Comminist with a gun that he was legally entitled to own. The shooting was not political. Kirov was a philanderer and he was shot by a jealous husband. After the shooting, Communist Party members lost the privilege of owning firearms. There were no more shootings by jealous husbands, and the Soviet Union went on to become one of the most peaceful and tranquil states known to man.

"It's disheartening to see that the response to School Shootings is apparently to give the Government more power."

I think esp here, in the aftermath of a completely preventable mass school shooting. The govt mandates that kids go to school through essentially high school. And the school's become sinecures for government teachers and administrators. The government buys votes through welfare, that subsidizes fatherless child rearing, which results in increased violence in teenagers, which ends of being seen significantly in the schools (that the govt is mandating those kids to attend). Rising school crime and violence in schools resulted in the hiring of school resource officers, who in this case are sheriff's deputies. Being better than working the streets, that job too became a government sinecure. So, maybe no surprise that this government employee, enjoying his last years before retirement, hid, instead of running to the sound of gunfire. It turns out, of course, that a good part of why the school was so violent was because the federal govt was paying the local govt for such, by financially rewarding the county and school district for ignoring crimes. Meanwhile, governments at all levels, from the FBI down to Broward Cowards, knew all about the future shooter for several years befote his slaying spree, and essentially did nothing, despite apparently > 40 reports from numerous people about his violent tendencies. Nothing.

So, the proposed solution to this mess created mostly by governments, is to seize the guns of the law abiding people who want, nay need, them to protect themselves because governments have been so inept at protecting them. Makes no sense going along with this nonsense. Government is the problem, or at least causes the problems, and is not the solution. Or at least a credible one.

Everything in his world has been about him since 1963. That's 55 years ago. Can a man who has been that famous that long even remember clearly what it was like to be just another bloke from Liverpool? Memories of simply walking down a city street unnoticed by anyone must, at this point, be very hazy for Sir Paul (and Sir Mick and Sir Ringo - and Dylan.) The days when nobody particularly gave a shit what they said or thought about anything are so far in the past that they have come to the conclusion that everyone in the world gives a shit what they think about everything.

And it doesn't take 55 years for that mentality to develop. Just a few years in the limelight will do it.

Bruce Hayden said...

Actually, for shooter's, happiness can be a warm gun. For me, little is more mentally therapeutic than time shooting at a range. And that usually means 100 rounds shot in fairly short order. Which is sufficient to heat up a gun.

I don't much care for shooting at a range-- way too loud and hate to wear those ear protectors. Shooting in the backyard is more fun although I have to be careful what is behind the target-- I miss a lot. And .22 is much better than .30 and .38 cal. for noise.

The arc of Althouse today bends towards sex.

and

'Stormy Daniels and Mattress Girl' makes me think of this (from Wiki):

'Electra Woman and Dyna Girl' is a Sid and Marty Krofft live action science fiction children's television series from 1976....

The program followed the crime-fighting exploits of female caped crusader Electra Woman (played by Deidre Hall) and her teen sidekick Dyna Girl (Judy Strangis), who worked in their off-time as reporters for Newsmaker Magazine (The full real names of the two were never revealed in any of the installments, although their first names were Lori and Judy, respectively.) In each episode, the duo would don skintight spandex in a bright flash of light called an "Electra-Change," get into the "ElectraCar," and use an array of technically advanced gadgets to thwart an eclectic collection of supervillains. They were assisted by Frank Heflin (Norman Alden), a scientist who stayed at their "ElectraBase," operating its highly sophisticated "CrimeScope" computer, a parody of the BatComputer, while keeping in continual contact with the pair through their "ElectraComs." Electra Woman and Dyna Girl was basically a female version of Batman and Robin with Dyna Girl uttering phrases like "Electra Wow!" or "Electra Yikes!" and so on...."

Which leads to this:

"TV Shows With Two Names in the Title: Rules for Picking Those Names!"

"1. If the TV show is a drama, use last names.
Generally speaking, first-name-only titles like Will & Grace, Mork & Mindy, Dharma & Greg, Laverne & Shirley, and Kath & Kim are reserved for comedies. (This is not necessarily true for movies, as Bonnie and Clyde and Thelma & Louise make clear).

2a. Of the two names, one should be one syllable ...
One syllable names are crisp, keep the title from going on, and can sound badass. Followers of this rule include: Starsky and Hutch, Turner & Hooch, Crockett & Tubbs, Cheech & Chong, Calvin & Hobbes, Tango & Cash, Ren & Stimpy, and the aforementioned Mork & Mindy and Will & Grace.

2b. Cagney & Lacey are both two syllables, but they do end with the same sound. Beavis and Butthead both start with the same sound, as do Cheech & Chong, and Mork & Mindy. The Captain & Tennille both have that nice hard T.
Rule Followed? Sort of: Rizzoli and Isles do both have an "L" sound, though in neither case is it the dominant vocative. (That's right, we said dominant vocative.)..."

Althouse even has a Tag like this: 'Althouse + Meade'.

But with Althouse + Meade I am not sure which one is the Strasky and which one is the Hutch.

The Germans have a word for this.

It's funny to me that gun grabbers frequently accuse gun owners of using guns as a phallic symbol and a way of buttressing an insecure sense of masculinity. For one thing, it ignores all the women who own guns. The only people who think guns = penises in the minds of gun owners are anti-gun people. It's the gun haters who keep making the analogy. I've never once heard a male gun owner refer to his guns in any sort of sexual sense and if I did, I would steer well clear of that guy.

Gun owners see guns as useful tools, pieces of metal which can be employed for good or ill. It's anti-gun people who invest inanimate objects with all sorts of (malevolent) meaning and then project their own neurotic fabrications onto gun owners.

From the internet:

• Chapman dropped into a crouch and fired four shots into Lennon’s back. Chapman remained at the scene of the crime, sitting on the sidewalk reading his dog-eared copy of 'The Catcher in the Rye.. Inside the front cover, he had penned the following inscription: “This is my statement. [signed] Holden Caulfield.”

• John Hinckley, Jr. who attempted to kill President Reagan, and wounded four others, was also enamored with 'The Catcher in the Rye'...

• As for JFK’s killer Lee Harvey Oswald, The Catcher in the Rye was found in a raid on his Dallas, Texas apartment after the assassination. His other books included George Orwell’s Animal Farm and Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf. Although unconfirmed, it has been claimed by a few sources that Oswald was very keen on Salinger’s novel, which apparently was his favorite...

• Actress Rebecca Schaeffer made a name for herself appearing in the television series, My Sister Sam, which premiered in 1986. In 1989, she was stalked and killed by Robert Bardo, an obsessed fan... ...When he was fleeing the scene of the shooting, he tossed away a copy of 'The Catcher in the Rye.'

There are also rumors that Sirhan Sirhan was enamored with the book.

Down to the bits that I left uptown
I need a fix 'cause I'm going down

The gun referred to the needle & syringe, & it was warm because the heroin had to be melted to be injected. I also remember, even though it may now be fuzzy memory from years ago, that Lennon swallows the "s" when he says:

"When I hold you in my arm(s)
And feel my finger on your trigger"

so that it sounds like "hold you in my arm".

Unfortunately, I can't find the version from White Album as released in the US in 1968(?)on YouTube to check my memory.

Food for thought: if the private gun-owners is compensating for inadequate genitals (I guess Tammy Bruce is a case of penis envy), then what is the average statist compensating for? Their penis substitute would be the State, which has thousands if not millions of guns, and a legion of minions trained in their use.

It was about his penis and Yoko's hairy cunt. She was so hairy the album cover was rejected, so they just left it white.

Then a few years later they pushed it again, and finally the world could see Yoko's hairy body and sperm all over the bed for $1.89.

“I've been shooting 50 through each gun. I have to work on it since I keep pulling to the left. I'm grabbing with all fingers, I think.”

That is what I do when I am in MT. Unfortunately, the plan had been to bring down a second vehicle, and leave it here in AZ, and I was going to bring the rest of the guns down at that time. And she doesn’t want me driving alone (or maybe being alone that long), so that vehicle stayed up there, and the rest of the guns stayed in the gun safe there. What I like doing is loading up 10 magazines, 10 rounds per, and alternating guns every other magazine. Last summer the extra magazines were left down here in the bag I take to the range, so was having to do a lot of loading of magazines in the middle of shooting. Now I have the bag, with all the extra magazines, three pair of ear protectors, and only the one handgun. Which means that I can only shoot 50 rounds without reloading magazines.

The weird thing right now is that I start pulling to the left when I start shooting, and it usually takes about 2 magazines before I correct that, by working on a smooth trigger pull across the break. Then, about half the time it seems, my shots start shifting back to the left on my last magazine or two. But only sometimes. Guy I know in MT, a couple years older than you, swears that you should only shoot 50 rounds at a time. But he lives at a range, and shoots those 50 rounds 365 days a year, and has for many decades.

The therapeutic part of shooting for me is the zen like feeling that I get when concentrating on shooting: sight picture, lean into it, smooth trigger pull across the break, rinse and repeat, until the slide locks back on an empty magazine. Maybe I should be counting shots, but don’t, and am inevitably surprised how quickly I get to that point. I could swear that I only shot 3-4 rounds, and not the full 10 or 15. I watch the pros, who can double tap multiple targets, rapid fire, never wasting shots, and am amazed. Though I was getting a little better at that at the range I belonged to in CO, where I could program the targets to turn towards me for maybe 4-5 seconds for two shots, then away for 15, repeating 5 times (for a 10 round magazine) (of course I programmed the targets - that is what I did for a living for 15 years). Unfortunately, the range here in AZ isn’t nearly that modern (and in MT, it is outdoors, where I have to do everything manually).

I agree 100%. At least at the range, you just don’t see anyone trying to compensate for their lack of masculinity very often. Mostly, I think, because that attitude is not welcomed. Probably because no one likes spending time around guys who have that sort of insecurities.

Chapman wasn't a mass shooter.

And of course the Althouse Portal is your gateway to buy the "Complete" Peanuts volumes, which are well worth your attention. (It's interesting that after rather a slump in the 80s, Shulz seemed reenergized towards the end).

I have been alternating between my .45 1911 Colt and my new (used) Walther P 38. Even though it's a new gun (to me) I shoot better with it.

On magazines, I paid extra for the P 38 because extra magazines were included but since moving I can't find them.

I gave one gun bag to my son when we moved but I looked when we were back there last month and did not find them.

I did find P 38 magazines on line and bought two.

We saw "Seven Days at Entebbe" Saturday and, while it isn't very good, I did notice the female terrorist had a P 38 until the last scenes when she had another gun.

It's a distinctive looking gun, sort of like a Luger is.

Again, this is an attempt to get their way by shaming their opponents. Peer pressure. The problem is that peer pressure works much better with women tha for men. And, of course, this charge doesn’t stand up to reality. You hear a lot of discussion about wolves, sheep, and sheepdogs in gun discussions. A lot of guys don’t carry guns and learn to be proficient at their use for their own safety, but rather, for the safety of their family and loved ones, and the population at large. In short, acting as men have been expected to do forever. So, how does that sort of person compare to someone who is willing to depend on the government, the state, for this safety, this protection? Is depending on others for protection more a male, or a female, trait? Most here, I suspect, would agree that it is more female than male. And those who don’t have a somewhat weird concept of masculinity. And very likely cannot rationally and logically explain why depending on government, instead of themselves, for the safety of their loved ones, shows the least bit of masculinity. Rather, to me, at least, it seems to show them being low-T beta males.

That guy I was talking about was a Marine armorer in Vietnam, which apparently meant that he could get away with sneaking in his own gun - a custom built .45 1911 (might have been more obvious, if he had tried it with anything else at the time). Only gun he ever apparently killed anyone with - several VC, and then someone with a gun to his head. The level that he has shot means that any gun will ultimately wear out, and that 1911 finally did. He has since moved to 9mm Glocks - compact G43 in the summer, and double stack G19 in the winter. Stock, even with those horrid sights, except for a little work on the triggers (which he did for me with my G17).

According to Howard, AR15 Stephen Willeford is a cuckservative chickenhawk macho man who keeps guns because he is impotent.

Coming to the aid of your friends and neighbors and shooting a shooter is being impotent, according to Howard. Lying on the ground praying the gunman doesn't look your way - that's not being impotent.

I just bought a new Browning .380. I looks just like the 1911 but is smaller, and of course, ,380 is a smaller round but might be good for targets.

I have a Walther PPK but it scrapes my web space if I fire it much,. Too small for my hand. I'll see if the Browning does that.

First time I heard that it was sung in a presentation in downtown LA by some outfit called Moral Re-Armament. They tried to start a mass uplift movement using kids. This was in 1964 I think.

Don't think the thing ever took off, since other things started happening about that time. But the song had quite the run, didn't it.

So, how does that sort of person compare to someone who is willing to depend on the government, the state, for this safety, this protection?

Well, it’s mixed. In Maryland the shooter was immediately engaged by the school resource officer. Initially these was a question as to whether the SRO killed the shooter with one round or whether the shooter killed himself after being shot at, but either way the SRO did his job and stopped the incident. In Coward County shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School and in the case of the Orlando nightclub shooting the cops sat around outside until the shooting was over. In the Orlando night club incident the police knew from cell phones that there were people hidden in the club who were being methodically hunted down and still they dawdled outside. Is it something about being a cop in Florida?

Anyway, between the FBI ignoring warnings about Cruz and the Coward County Sheriff’s Office ignoring warnings about Cruz and mental health professionals evaluating Cruz and ruling — obviously in error — that he was no threat to himself or others, everyone in a position of responsibility failed the kids in Parkland.

I really enjoy the North-South Skirmish Ass’n. Competitive target shooting with the guns used in the Civil War (replicas, actually — real guns that are shootable are mostly too valuable as collectors items). Those old muzzle loaders are quite a challenge to shoot accurately. The comaradery is also great. Yes and no.

Being an American of a certain age (66) my purchases were the Capitol Records releases. After they broke up, I proclaimed Sgt. Pepper's as their best.

Then the CDs came out and were the original Parlophone compilations. The addition of "I'm Only Sleeping", "And Your Bird Can Sing" and "Doctor Robert" made quite a difference.

Revolver is now #1

Your mileage will vary with a scalpel that does not enjoy legal leverage outside of a Planned Parenthood sanctuary.

I've lived in NYC for nearly 40 years, (covering the "bad old days" of the 80s), and I've never been in a fist fight (or a situation where I was even faintly fearful of that), much, much less any situation where a gunfight was likely.

Some of us live in grittier neighborhoods, Robert. The local SWAT team on my street took down my next door neighbor's son after the second stolen car one man crime spree had a baby in the back seat. He thoughtfully left the baby in the parking lot of the local Church's Fried Chicken, but that didn't stop the police from bringing their MRAP to the arrest. He was already a convicted felon, so the new gun charges and possession of heroin and ecstasy with intent to distribute won't look so good for him either. The neighbors have been on to him for years. So yeah, given his 15 cousins, I am pretty comfortable with a 12-gauge Saiga and a 20-round magazine, in addition to my .45.
