Those cute little yellow boats also say Harken on the slide. Harken is a nice manufacturer of blocks ("pullies") for sailboats HQed in Wisconsin, but I was unaware that they built or sold boats. Any idea what the connection is to Harken?

When does frostbite sailing begin in Wisconsin? March ?

Read a really, really, funny book, "The Real Animal House" by Chris Miller, former writer for National Lampoon.

In essence, a few Korean War vets, survived the absolute hell of the Frozen Chosin, came home in 1953, got into Dartmouth, joined a frat, and pretty much acted like sex-crazed, uncouth animals, and imposed such standards on the entire frat for years.

The author Miller recounts his pledge class year at Dartmouth in '63, guided by the legacy of these animals, which, of course, found its way into short-stories at National Lampoon in the 70s, and then became the basis for the famous movie, Animal House in '79.

Ivy League anti-political correctness was a thing of joy -- alas, it is likely gone.

Musk certainly has the Afro-American taste for receiving money from the government.

The government wanted people to build and buy electric cars. Lots of people took the money they offered to do so. Unlike the others, Musk actually built electric cars. Better yet, electric cars that people actually wanted to buy. He took less money than fossil fuel car companies take from the government all of the time.

The government wanted people to build rockets to take men and supplies to the space station. Several companies took the money. Musk proceeded to do so cheaper and better than everyone else. He has taken far less money than the traditional aerospace companies and preformed much better.

Musk has merely taken advantage of programs available to everyone, and provided goods and services no one else can.

I hate that these Soviet jokes apply more and more to the United States:

A rabbit ran wildly in the street.
"Why are you running like mad?" a bear asked.
"Don't you know, they are now arresting all camels and castrating them."
"But you're rabbit, not a camel."
"Right, but if they catch you, and cut off your nuts, then you can prove that you're not a camel!

I have an internet friend in South Africa. She says her land has been in her family for 350 years, long before the Bantu even came to South Africa. That was the Boer's argument. I hope she and her family are OK.

Trade war starting next week!

I will say, I think Trump's pro-free trade advisors have completely blown it. He ran on trade protection. He made clear to his advisors that he wanted tariffs. And they didn't give him tariffs. Frankly, if they had worked with him on smaller tariffs on steel or something a few months ago, I think he'd have been satisfied, and he could always threaten to increase tariffs depending on the effect on the domestic economy. But they completely blew it. Kind of feels like the President threw up his hands and decided they were just sandbagging him. And now this is where we are.

Strategic advantage. Despite being well-armed, the resistant black populations were neutralized by competing black factions, and the native white population was slaughtered in a mass abortion field. The social justice adventurers got first call on the natural resources, and the natives got pushed to the back of the bus. Now, South Africa is the only (?) nation with a progressive constitution that established institutional diversity, including racism, sexism, and congruence (?), and redistributive change, as the highest law of the land.

I don't really understand what's going on in the other USA. We used to have a commenter that was obviously in South Africa during the Blade Runner (Oscar P. (sp?)) trial. I hope they still read here, and can explain the situation.

Otherwise, this is Heinlein's definition of bad luck.

I have been watching the posts about Cape Town running out of water due to "climate change."
No. This is deliberate. If "the English" still was in charge, Cape Town would be saved by piping in water from more distant sources and/or desalinization of seawater. It would be expensive, but that important to them.
Conversely, the demise of Cape Town has been/is that important to the ANC government.

n.n said...

desalinization of seawater. It would be expensive

This would actually be an ideal situation for a so-called "green" energy solution, since reliability is not a factor, and environmental disruption can be contained to application-specific ecosystems. China would get the waste and money, and Cape Town would get the potable water.

California has worst 'quality of life' in US, study says. That state has a lot of problems. Given their taxes, their general refusal to allow new home construction, it's as if they're determined to drive out the entire middle class. Then all that will be left will be a small cadre of the ultra-rich Hollywood and Silicon Valley and vast horde of illegal aliens who will act as a permanent serf class for them. It's like a weird return to feudalism.

Jupiter: Something tells me the Left is going to rediscover the value of immigration controls when the Boers need sanctuary. Some Africans are more African than other Africans.

There was a case a few years back of some indignant expat South African academic in Tennessee, tut-tutting racist white South Africans seeking asylum. Two articles from quick google: here and here.

Snippet from the latter [my bold]:

'But Professor Mark Behr, of Rhodes College, in Memphis, Tennessee, and Dr Dennis Laumann, of the University of Memphis, have rejected requests that they help the family.

"I am not interested in assisting Afrikaners claiming discrimination in a non-racial, democratic, post-apartheid South Africa," wrote Laumann.

"In my scholarly opinion, there is absolutely no basis for their allegation - whatever evidence they may present."

Behr - who is an award-winning South African author - said he did not believe the law firm would find "any fair-minded scholar" to support the family.

"If the people your firm seeks to represent are in any way victims of racism, it is, sadly, only a racism of their own making, in their own minds.

"Let me add, too, that I speak as a white Afrikaner, from a family of farmers, people who themselves lost farms they owned in Africa, and with my own profound empathy for all people who live off the land in South Africa," replied Behr.'

(Behr moved to and, at the time of the articles, practiced his profound empathy in Tennessee, from where Laumann also opined on the safety of non-racial, democratic, post-apartheid South Africa. Don't know anything else about them.)

"I hate that these Soviet jokes apply more and more to the United States"

Long ago, I read Michener's The Bridge at Andau, about Hungary. He described the difficult decision parents had to make, about when you told the children that the government was the enemy. Too early, and they might reveal it to the wrong person at school. Too late, and they might turn you in.

I distinctly recall thinking, "Thank God I live in America, where that kind of thing can't happen."

"their general refusal to allow new home construction,"

There's a lot of home construction. The problem is that it's not the coasts where people want to live. The coastal cities are already way overbuilt, but that's the only "California" that people think has quality of life. And given the relative climate, they're not all that wrong. I mean once you get over the hills, a person might as well live in another state.

Sacramento is adding 3000 homes near the airport (and near the new Amazon distribution center) on top of the thousands of other homes being built in the northwest part of the city. In LA, the inland empire (San Bernardino and Riverside counties) has massive amounts of new homes. Part of the state, like the mountain areas, way overbuilt during the real estate boom of the early 2000s.

Damn dignity. Damn value. Damn reconciliation. There is political, social, and economic leverage to be exploited in diversity and congruence.

Hey surfed, what kind of boat do you recommend for somebody whose only experience is with day sailors and motor craft, up to 26 ft on the latter, for sailing/cruising the large lakes and canal systems? I would like it to be manageable alone, but operable by a couple, one of whom is a complete novice. I would spend time this summer on Lake Champlain learning, then maybe head up to the St Laurence.

There is a Nauticat for sale, that is ugly as sin, but seems to fill the bill.

I see this the thread where we are discussing why no white person should ever vote Democratic:

The Democratic Platform

Daily Mail Thursday March 1st, 2018

South African president Jacob Zuma has called on lawmakers to help seize white-owned land without compensation - to establish 'pre-colonial' patterns.

But he has been warned that the measure would trigger a racial war in a country historically blighted by racial tensions.

Speaking to parliament, he called for unity between black parties. The controversial move would require a change to the constitution.

langford peel said...

First they will import a vast number of illegal aliens for cannon fodder.

Then they will confiscate your guns through laws forced through due to propaganda fostered by the media and crisis actors.

Then they will establish "pre-colonial" patterns based on the disparate impact of racism.

It is all laid out for you.

As our most astute correspondent from the Philippines has opined....we are in a cold civil war. You give up you guns at your own peril.

langford peel said...

South Africa’s new president, Cyril Ramaphosa, has pledged to return the lands owned by white farmers since the 1600s to the black citizens of the country.

“The expropriation of land without compensation is envisaged as one of the measures that we will use to accelerate the redistribution of land to black South Africans,” said Ramaphosa, who was sworn into office to succeed Jacob Zuma as president last week.

If you read this speech you can see he wants to go full Rhodesia/Venezuela. A racist socialist seizing of property to be given to a favored interest group.

This is a blueprint for our own progressives.

NPR on Russian Trollgate

Heard on Morning Edition March 1, 2018

"The New Yorker's Masha Gessen and Adrian Chen have covered Russia extensively. They tell NPR's David Greene why they think the impact of Russian election interference efforts is largely overblown."

Audio and Transcript. Audio offers inflections missing in the transcript.

"...GREENE: Masha, you have been, you know, an outspoken critic of Vladimir Putin. You suffered personally under his regime. How uncomfortable is it for you to be raising doubts about, you know, an anti-Russian narrative right now?

GESSEN: Oh, there's rich discussion online about whether Putin has forced me to speak this way or whether he has bought me.

GREENE: Really?

GESSEN: (Laughter) And for the record, neither.

GREENE: OK. But it's gotten to that level. I mean, people are wondering if Putin is - has basically brought you in to be his defender.

GESSEN: Yes, yes. I have - I have been widely now called a Putin shill."

A South African Facebook friend I’ve known for many years through “high-IQ” discussion groups posted this last year:

I love all the money saving tips being bandied about at the moment as inflation skyrockets. These are probably useful for people who have jobs. Unfortunately the apartheid laws here prevent many white people from getting work of any kind no matter how skilled they might be. Elon Musk for example would probably be sleeping under a bridge if he was still living here. Right now, I am also officially unemployed with absolutely no way of ever getting a job here again as I too am classed as being a white person. At my age (early 60s) this is a slow death sentence. Isn't freedom fun?

By the way I am seeing that comments I made in reply to others display not in that form but in the longitudinal order of time and thus, if I don't quote the post I'm replying to, may confuse. Another nice feature of the recent alternate interface.

It also seems to have handled markup better, because I see italics in a recent Patrick O'Brian comment that I don't remember doing the HTML for myself.
