Melania's white pantsuit — at the SOTU — "seemed to be about as subtle a slap in the face as could be contained in a garment."

According to Vanessa Friedman at the NYT in "Melania Trump and the Case of the White Pantsuit."

The theory is that Hillary Clinton somehow owns the symbolism of the white pantsuit and that it is "sartorial shorthand for both the suffragists and contemporary women’s empowerment and something of an anti-Trump uniform" and it was just worn at the Grammys by "the women gathered behind Kesha."

When I first read this I thought the unsubtle slap was to the face of liberal women, but I now I see that it was unsubtle in the other direction! That's some subtle unsubtlety. Friedman reads Melania's pantsuit as symbolic violence against Trump, for his true/fake consorting with a porn star.

But even Friedman doubts the clear meaning of the symbolism. Maybe Melania just wanted to do the opposite of what the Democratic Party women were doing on SOTU — wearing black. They were copying the protest motif of the actresses at the Golden Globes (even though last year, they'd worn white to Trump's address to a joint session of Congress).

I'd say the white looked great. Melania stood out, and it expressed optimism and cheer — especially effective when Democrats were wearing black and going out of their way to look grumpy.

It was not white. It was cream. No fashion model wears white after Labor Day.

The shirt was white.

Fake news!

Sometimes a white suit is just a white suit. Sheesh, what's next tea leaves or chicken entrails to divine meanings?

I doubt there was any hidden meaning in her choice of color, or lack thereof. She looked elegant in all white, but then again she looks elegant in anything she wears. I did notice that she didn’t look particularly happy, but I’ll admit it may just be me imagining things.

This is disgusting. These people are disgusting.

"For the first time in my adult life I am proud of our country."

That is a slap in the face.

The NYT serves no decent or useful purpose. It is a tool used to achieve malicious ends.

Some on the left have realized they have gone too far.

Others apparently have not.

Methinks no matter the color, style, designer or thread-count of whatever garment Melania chose to wear, some deranged lefty would find the symbolism that leads back to Stormy. Or Russia. Or both.

The issue these days is telling the white hats from the black hats. Good old Melania being a fashion genius wore a body length white hat contrasting with the bitter and evil Democrat black hats.

All of this winning is getting hard to take...but she persisted.

Melania in a white pantsuit looks sexy.

Hillary in a white pantsuit looks __________ [Fill in blank]

Is it pantsuit or pantssuit?

In general, pantsuits do not conjure up images of sexiness. Of course, pantsuits are often associated with Hillary's preferred choice of attire.

Earnest Prole said...

If Melania's white pantsuit was indeed symbolic violence against Trump, surely we should also read Hillary's white pantsuits as symbolic violence against her raping, philandering, and sexual-harassing husband.

Big Mike said...

And I think Melania has accepted the signed statement from Stormy Davis that the alleged affair never happened.

As to the pantsuit, I think (1) Melania is saying “This is how you wear a pantsuit,” and (2) as First Lady she can wear any color she wants.

They also tried to make a big deal about her arriving separately. When all she did was travel with her guests. The media is as scummy as they are stupid. All of them are bleeding money, yet they refuse to cover stories that go against their preferred narrative. You would think the rise of sites like Drudge after they tried to bury the BJ Clinton story would have taught them something. I guess they like the competition.

Michael K said...

She looked great and the use of the guests was brilliant.

The left hates Trump and he is brilliant using TV. It makes them look worse.

Also the offer of 1.8 million Dreamers for the path to citizenship was genius. He knew they could not take the offer.

There may be some drownings in "The Blue Wave."

I appreciate this post, Althouse performing the Petersonesque task of a sane woman (sex excepted) trying to tame a crazy woman. More power to her.

Meanwhile, we male cons enjoy the spectacle of Melania turning crazy prog women even crazier. A scenario Peterson did not envision: that men might not want to control the craziness, but let it spin out of control. The better to control it in the end, of course: you know how it goes with male supremacy.

The real problem was the size of the garment. A white pantsuit on a size 18 woman is so much more appealing.

Exactly, Fransisco D. It was cream, not white.

Melania is the beautiful delicate cream on top of Hillary's just deserts. We get two for one! We get to eat our cake and our soft vanilla ice cream, too!

Hillary didn't "choose" pantsuits as such. She and her advisors simply decided, that given the size of Hillary's belly, it was the only choice.

Ah, The New York Times. On the one hand, it's seriously detrimental to our democracy to have the newspaper of record abandon even the pretense of objectivity when it comes to Donald Trump. On the other hand, witnessing their dyspepsia is a guilty pleasure.

"Especially because during her husband’s address last year, Mrs. Trump came under fire very quickly for her choice of what was seen as a let-them-eat-cake black sequined Michael Kors suit, so she must know how much what she wears to this particular event matters. Especially because she has proved, over the last few months, perfectly cognizant of the way dress can be used as an implicit form of messaging, wearing red Dior for her trip to France for Bastille Day, and Dolce & Gabbana to the G-7 in Sicily.

And especially given the almost elated reception that greeted her decision to wear a bright pink pussy bow blouse for an appearance during the campaign after her husband’s previous public sexual shaming, the “Access Hollywood” tape in which he made vulgar remarks about women. If she has paid any attention at all to public reaction (or if her team has), she cannot be ignorant of the fact that when she seems to use clothing as a subversive tool to suggest what she presumably cannot say, it provokes a groundswell of support."

My boss, who is the sweetest most low key woman you could meet, was asked five times today if she was a Republican because she was wearing white. We work as contractors in a federal agency in DC. She was wearing white because, as she rd me, all her other clothes were dirty.

This is what Dems have sunk too. I'm sorry it wasn't me. I would have told them to GF themselves.

She is a Republican, btw, and was gracious with those doing the Democrat inquisition on her.

Would it be considered outrageously misogynist or something to point out that Melania Trump will look good wearing practically anything, while Hillary Clinton will look pretty bad no matter what she's wearing?

Or is one not permitted to discuss these women's appearance even after a progressive journalist has broached the subject?

Caligula, Hillary Clinton became First Lady at about the same age as Melania Trump became First Lady. Although HRC was never a model, she looks pretty good in photos from Clinton's first term. I trust Melania still looks good when she's Hillary's age (70).
