I love this Edward Steed comic, imagining Trump as just a regular guy in New York.

In the New Yorker. Steed uses real Trump quotes and an excellent crude style of painting Trump and sticking him into photographs of ordinary New York places. Sample panel:

What if Trump was one of us?

It's always struck me that Trump tweets and talks a bit like a loudmouth--virtually any loudmouth--in a bar in New York. It seems bizarre that he (apparently) doesn't drink.
"Maybe we need a travel ban on all Muslims until we find out what the hell is going on."
"Of course I believe in torture if it will help this country--in fact, I'd use water-boarding, hell, I'd use horrible methods they've never even thought of."
"I don't mind if the police rough somebody up when they're getting him in the police car."
"Anyone who doesn't applaud patriotic lines in the SOTU is guilty of treason."
He sometimes sounds like Mussolini on about day one of his first campaign--but I don't think he closely resembles Mussolini at all. No Hitler, no Devil incarnate. Not even someone who wants to subvert the Constitution.

Love it, slightly irreverent, totally accurate, only a slight caricature (the setting not his image of Trump).

This comic works on two levels. Because wasn't the news of the Ghostbusters remake a sign that PC culture had gotten ridiculous? Isn't that one of those "how we got Trump" type of things?

That "treason" quote accurate? I am assuming that the rest are all bullshit too.

It's easy to keep the hate flowing when you put words in his mouth. Cuts off any discussion of possibly valid points he might make.

Liberal's are scared shit of the common sense points he makes, so crank the distortion to 11! It's like they put their comments through a stomp box.

I'd have an online quiz: is this a quote from Trump, or Archie Bunker?

NotWhoIUsedtoBe said...

Or perhaps Eric Cartman.

Tim, +1 on the putting words in mouths. Beat me to it.

I'm sure his crude "Obama is ignorant" cartoons were great was well. Where can we find them?

Very entertaining. If Trump saw it, I'm pretty sure he would appreciate it. He likes good humor.

What a hypocrite! Edward Steed's implicit critique of Trump's style seems to be along the lines of "if you have to say it yourself..."

But look at Steed's own body of work as vaunted by his own publisher, The New Yorker...

Satirical Cartoons
By Edward Steed The New Yorker May 3, 2017

Throughout history, political cartoons have played a significant role in the shaping of this great nation. With just a few strokes of a pen, the cartoonist sums up a complex situation in a single powerful image that explains everything. Thus, the humble cartoon brings about change and peace and togetherness and understanding and progress and happiness. Here is a series of cartoons to help you make sense of the current moment.

What a bunch of hooey! "A single powerful image that explains everything... brings about change and peace and togetherness and understanding and progress and happiness "?

Goodness. Has any cartoonist ever shown more contempt for the masses?

While at the same time had to explicitly label to explain his symbolism (i.e., "say it himself") more than Edward Steed?

Just look at that convoluted shit!

It's nice to have a president we can mock again. W was funny. So was Reagan. Trump has them all beat.

That's not funny.

Trump is a Walt Whitman redux. Both from New York and both great communicators who used the Country's past greatness to enlighten the present with hope.

Neither man would be allowed to teach Literature at today's Harvard because they speak directly to peasants and celebrate common man.

I believe in all of those things that Trump said, Lloyd W. Robertson, and I'm not drunk. Yet.

There was one joke made at Obama’s expense during his eight-year reign. Surprisingly, Jimmy Kimmel made it, something like “Remember when you said ‘If you like your doctor you can keep your doctor?’ That was a good one.”

Maybe I got the joke wrong but I’m not wrong about it being the only real joke made about him during his reign of error. And I remember his response: the glass jaw twitched.

If that man had to take one one-millionth of the hits Trump takes daily, he’d have been in a fetal position under the desk screaming about the beetle-headed people coming to get him.

"an excellent crude style of painting Trump" Just like all the excellently crude New Yorker cartoons about O.

"and sticking him into photographs of ordinary New York places." The New Yorker, to its credit, didn't go that far with O. Even in cartoon-viewing, you can only suspend disbelief so much.

The Ghostbusters line was pretty good. In his own narcissistic way, the guy has an actual sense of humor--the treason line was also good. Trump is the chain-yanking idiot savant of postmodern political discourse. And compared to the lying under O, mere bullshitting is an improvement.

It's somewhat clever. The thing is Trump is very much like some ordinary guy, except smarter than average and rich. It's one of his charms. The art here is simply stating the obvious though in a creative way.

As to the Ghostbusters with all women, apparently Trump was not the only one who was wondering what that was all about. It was such a mess that it seems that the director and all the actors had no idea either.

Men in shorts and manspreading too. An Althouse two-fer.

I wonder why Obama was never treated this way? Whatever could it be? Do you think the "comics" missed an opportunity?

I think they are a lot more interesting than most of the stuff coming out of comedians today on Trump.

He is a cranky old man. It's funny. He's not evil.

Another example of the average guy being patronized by his inferiors.

Steed uses real Trump quotes

Yet you prove that a lie with the panel you show. Did Trump comment on the Ghostbusters remake? Fuck no. Steed is just another Lyin' Lefty cocksucker.

An "excellentry crude style"? Ehhh... no. Looks lazy. And unappealing overall Like something a ten year old would do a better job at on his ipad.

Not even someone who wants to subvert the Constitution.

So advocating torture and extra judicial punishment by the police is not subverting the Constitution?!

Good to know.

Enhanced interrogation to get information has been the rule since 2001. Talking about what he'd like as opposed to ordering it is not "subverting the Constitution." Point to a specific rule he instituted, and I'd agree with you, however.

And compared to leftists who advocate trashing the Constitution and starting over? Yes.

And while we're talking about "subverting the Constitution," let's talk about weaponizing the IRS to go after the Tea Party groups. And being kept in the loop (as Obama asked) while your FBI spy on Trump's minions. That's subversion, too, right?

Right? Anyone?

The cartoonists were too busy teaming him up with Spider-Man and swooning over him.

Trump speaks in a way that seems to be unfiltered stream of conscientiousness. It's this naked honesty that connects deeply with some and absolutely horrifies others.

Hollywood's gone stupid. Trump hasn't. NewYorker just doesn't like local folks.

It might have been humorous had the caption played on Althouse's "men in shorts" tag.

The Ghostbusters quote sure as hell is real. Look it up.

Even that much is untrue.

Time and time again, Trump is weaseling out of the "unfiltered" things he said.

Like "shithole countries." Either he said it or not, as one of those "unfiltered" things for which, I take it, you think we should give Trump credit. Trump says -- incredibly -- that he didn't say it. I think. I'm not even sure what the Trump version is. They've never made it clear. "Tough language" was used. Bullshit. Be clear.

Trump often wants to play it both ways with hedged words and fudged, unclear phrasing. That's hardly "unfiltered." Unless Trump really just doesn't know enough, to be clear and precise and decisive about important policy matters. And I'd happily accept that explanation.

Howard said...

Thanks for confirming my observation, Chuck. You are the BEST!!

It may be the greatest con in human history. A shyster, schmuck, & schmo billionaire dupes the hoi polloi that he stands for their interests and not the selfish interests of rich people like himself. Trump is a fraud, a faker, and a fool to round out today's comment. But a picture, even a cartoon, is worth a thousand words, so I leave it to Messieurs Steel and Steed to elucidate the crudity of Monsieur Trump more colorfully, and artfully than I possibly can.
