In recent months, I've been dreaming about eating food. It's very realistic and I get what seems to be the same enjoyment as eating in reality. The only thing is that I restrain myself from eating too much while dreaming. That's a good habit while awake, but a bad one while dreaming.

I read an article somewhere that the Commonwealth Nations are meeting in London to decide who will succeed Elizabeth as their Monarch because hereditary succession is not the rule, only a suggestion.

Talk about Public Opinion preparation, these Brits have suddenly discovered a vote for the Monarchy. That would be a second Glorious Revolution.

My money is on Kate.

It's been that way since the Glorious revolution in 1688.

That’s what’s nice about cold weather, it’s like secret sauce on a little meal like that, with no added calories.

The successor to HMQ as head of the Commonwealth need not be a member of the Royal Family, or even British. It's poor form to discuss it publicly while the Monarch still draws breath, but there's talk of democratically electing a leader. I propose Justin Trudeau, if it will get him out of Canada.

Reading about the Princeton professor who actually thought you could have a class with a serious discussion about free speech with the current SJW crowd.

Leftover osso buco, yum. Brown bagging is the best. At least if you can cook, LOL.

I hadn't noticed it before, but the blog has an Ashley Madison ad on it. It is that google has determined that I am a pig, a random placement, or has Ms. Althouse become open minded on infidelity?

FIDO, that ad doesn't appear on my version of the site: it's likely following your expected preferences FWIW.

Speaking of eating, where are people getting their king cakes these days? And is tomorrow too late to have one? Being French, we do galettes du roi, earlier in the year at something called the Epiphany. They don't know from NO king cake.

So Bloomberg is reporting that the US killed "scores" of Russian mercenaries last week in Syria. Who paid for the mercenaries? The Russian outfit, Wagner, is Russia's answer to Blackwater. Did the Kremlin know about the mercenaries and not tell us? Is the Kremlin involved with the mercenaries? Did the Kremlin give financial aid to Assad with the understanding that Assad would use the funds to hire Russian mercenaries? Is the Kremlin coordinating with the mercenaries in any way? This should be a huge story.

If Trump and Putin manage to avoid an international crisis over this, Democrats will say it's additional proof of collusion.

So Bloomberg is reporting that the US killed "scores" of Russian mercenaries last week in Syria.

The thing that got me from that article was the misleading headline: U.S. Strikes Killed Scores of Russia Fighters in Syria, Sources Say, which makes it sound like we initiated the confrontation.

The U.S. forces were defending a base held by U.S. and Kurdish forces against an attack by Syrian-Government aligned mercenaries.

Fido, I've never had ads on the Althouse blog. I turned off my Adblock Plus, refreshed the main page and then received on from Investors Business Daily. So I guess it is possible you got one from Ashley Madison.

Am I sensing In-FIDO-elity? Just kidding.

That means that our new AI overlords have decided you are a pig. FIDO the pig?

Of course, the women at Ashley Madison are all robots, so you may find that infidelity is not what it used to be.

The Rob Porter scandal still hinges a lot on just what language the FBI used in warning the White House about his spouse abuse problem. And Mr. Porter apparently was a very convincing persuader that it was all just she said/he said; though two of them, still just "coincidence," not "enemy action."

To block ads, just turn off Javascript. Althouse is one of the few sites that works great without it. (Both the articles and the comments [except for posting]).

Since our host periodically shares her opinions of political fundraising requests that land in her inbox, I figure that she and other Althousians might find this recent XKCD cartoon to be entertaining:

I kept putting off getting an ad blocker (doing homework on new software is a pain), but when Althouse imbedded the ads rather than have them on the side, I found it so unattractive I got off my butt and got one. Glad I did.

Meade said...

She got rid of the between-post ads a couple months ago. The only ads now are in the sidebar.

Jupiter said...

Actually, what we need is a browser add-on that doesn't block the ads, but doesn't display them either. Just download them to the bitbucket. Then Althouse gets paid just as if we'd seen the stupid things. Would that be fraud? Do I have an enforceable obligation to use the bit patterns I've down-loaded to drive a working monitor with a human in front of it? Does Althouse have an obligation to refrain from billing for the ad display if I have not?

Yeah, it's a sophisticated algorithm. If you're getting Ashley Madison ads, it says something about what Google knows about you.

Me, I'm getting an ad for a $1900 Chloe handbag.

Probably just that he is a man past 35 with disposable income. I gather that FaceBook allows advertisers to basically put together a filter, based upon a selection from a very large number of traits FaceBook may or may not be able to link to a user. YouTube does something similar. Not sure about Google.

Advertisers don't seem to have gotten the message that men = women. They think the socially-constructed "sex" of the people their ads are shown to is important. Isn't that strange? You'd think they would have been to college and learned the Truth.

tcrosse said...

"I use AdBlock. Free. Seems to work well."

It works so well that some of the websites I visit each day detect it, and require that I turn it off before I can see their content. Well, fair is fair.

Jupiter said...

Well, it works for you, but I suspect it's costing Althouse ad revenue. And while I don't always agree with our hostess, I will defend to the death, or at least to the extent of a few idle comments, her right to get paid for ads I don't have to look at.

Fair is fair, but war is war! And what one programmer can do, another can undo. The question is, how do they detect it? I think they must detect the fact that they did not get a request for an ad on their ad server after you downloaded their page. So, the blocker could send that request, and then just discard the ad when it arrived. That would waste bandwidth, but if anything was ever made to be wasted, it's bandwidth.

Though if the girl on the front of the ad is any indication, she also costs about $1,300 to bag.

What ever happened to that nice Mueller fellow and his wonderful team of rabid dem partisan prosecutors who were so gung ho to get that "traitor" 33-year Army Veteran Michael Flynn?

Gee, it seems like only yesterday Flynn's guilty plea (under duress) was the "proof" that there was a "there" there in the collusion investigation, even though the plea had nothing to do with collusion.

And here we are with this FISA court judge (in DC) who is likely to have signed off on the BS warrants who also just happened to be the Federal District Judge overseeing the Flynn case...being forcibly recused from the case just 3 days after the guilty plea.

And what is the first thing the replacement judge orders? That Muellers delightful team of dem hacks turn over all exculpatory evidence (which was supposed to have been done already) to the Flynn team.

That evidence would include the FBI interview notes which showed the FBI investigators did NOT believe Flynn lied about anything.

But 7 months later, Mueller's team of dem hacks disagreed and went after Flynn and his family.

Hmmmmmmm.

And now Muellers team of hacks have requested the already delayed sentencing hearing be delayed until.......May.

Hmmmmmmm.

But that puts more money in Bezos' pocket.

I like the idea of a browser that sends the ads to the bitbucket. The advertiser is hoping that by showing me an image of, say, an attractive woman, he can convince me to buy something I don't need and won't enjoy. He is trying to cause me to act against my interest. Which is to say, he is trying to drive me crazy. It would seem axiomatic that it is in my interest to avoid that outcome. He is fishing for my money, and I am trying to get the bait without getting the hook. A battle of wits! How exciting!
