I just asked my son in Belleville, WI about the snow. He said they had a difficult time getting out of the driveway going to work. I told him I had to water my trees today; that we had a high of 65 here in Placitas, NM. He has stopped talking to me.
So, how long until a coalition of countries in the Americas stages an "intervention" in Venezuela?
No doubt such an intervention might be logistically managed by the USA, since we're the only folks who can do it, but I'm sure that it will be "led" by other SA countries. I'm suuuuure this is being discussed under the table at the OAS.
The entire population of Venezuela cannot be turned into refugees, bandits, or starvation victims. It would de-stabilize the entire region. There is a good chance that we may see the South American re-creation of "The Great Leap Forward" in a few short months.
Damn ground hog. Now we are starting the next Ice Age.
Venezuela is well on its way to becoming something like Somalia. There are a million refugees already (mostly in Colombia) and law&order seems to have completely broken down in several provinces.
Colombia could soon have an enormous refugee problem, maybe in a few weeks, as starving people become desperate.

It is irritating that the Left refuses to acknowledge the unfolding nightmare in Venezuela. The Chavez and Madura governments have explicitly embraced an experiment in state-directed socialism. This is what the Leftists want to do in the United States.
Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world, and a population a bit smaller than California's. As soon as oil prices dropped from their record highs, Venezuela descended into economic chaos.
The end game looks as though it will be grim.

The Olympics are parading their athletes now, and it sure seems that a whole lot of countries are hosting Olympic tourists (playing the old Dominica card where that hedge fund manager from Montana and his wife became olympic cross country skiers for that Caribean country). Tongan skiers, right. He is not even Tongan, and marching without a shirt doesn't make him one.
I used to live near the Canadian border and grew up living for the winter games, mostly hockey and ski jumping. But now I would never watch an Olympic hockey game for the same reason I would not watch an Olympic basketball game, or even worse, golf.
Funny, I find in my senior years being more attracted to curling. To me, there is a Zen to it. I will watch curling.

It was reported in the Pittsburgh paper this morning the mother of Pirates catcher Elias Diaz was kidnapped in Venezuela. Probably the only growth industry left in the socialist haven.
I liked the tune Althouse posted yesterday. This is a vote for more in that vein, modern reworkings of 60's classics. Here is one suggestion.

I watched a few soft porn movies on HBO tonight. Kind of funny. One was a sci-fi takeoff. I imagined a nerd meeting one of the actresses and being holy-cow more impressed that she had actually been in a sci-fi flick than that she was a porn actress.
It could happen. My sci-fi nerd cred is impeccable, BTW. So impeccable that I can use the term "sci-fi" ironically, rather than the nerd approved "SF" or "Speculative Fiction." Where were you in 1975, huh? I was down at Uncle Hugo's in Minneapolis, in its original location, just down 4th street from the Electric Fetus head shop.
The hottest woman in SF is, and will always be, Sigourney Weaver (from "Ghostbusters" and the "Alien" franchise). A close second? Sean Young, in "Blade Runner."
The acting is pretty bad in these soft porn flicks. But the male actors are better than the female actors. I think the actresses could be better, but the directors don't ask enough of them. They don't insist that they do a non-sex, talking-scene, over and over until they get it right. Getting the acting part right is not why they are there.

Instead of modern reworking of 60s classics, there is Postmodern Jukebox taking current pop songs (or well known ones) and putting them in a different pace. They do a 60s girl group version of E Goulding "Burn" PMJ youtube channel has 270 videos or so. If you are looking for reworkings.

That’s about right. Phoenix has been running about 80 as a high much of the last week. We are running the frigging AC. In early February. I get reports from Honeywell, for my “smart” thermostats, and a month ago was using more heat than AC, and no AC around Christmas. But now, it is straight AC. Oh, for a little snow. We moved down for the winters 13 months ago from CO, and I was getting tired of shoveling the driveway. Now, we only see snow on TV, sometimes up in Flagstaff, 140 miles north, and 5500 feet higher in elevation. Need something in the middle.
Now we are starting the next Ice Age.

The ice age we are already in hasn't ended yet. It's called the Quaternary and began around 2.5 million years ago. We are just in a period of global warming called the Holocene that began around 12,000 years ago. One day the Holocene will end and the ice sheets will return.
I had huge fixation on Sean Young when I was a teenager. I saw her first in Stripes, then Blade Runner, and most memorably in Young Doctors in Love and lastly in Dune and No Way Out- after that her career seem to stall for some reason (though I do remember reading that she was difficult to work with, whatever that means). She was smoking hot with a voice that I will never forget.
Checking IMDb just now, she has worked continuously since the 80s. The only thing I remember seeing her in the last two decades was an episode of the original CSI.
If you like SciFi and have Netflix, I fully recommend Altered Carbon. Very heavily influenced by Blade Runner, and very noirish.
Lee Smith has been doing some excellent writing the last several months tying together some important and neglected themes involving what is now looking like a real conspiracy to spy on the Trump Campaign and transition period. A must read for anyone that doesn't have the blinders on like Inga.

How far it travels depends on how often you sample it. In the case of a continuous random walk, the path travelled has infinite length over any time interval no matter how short.
I could have stayed in Florida until May, but I missed the north and didn't want to miss the long advent of spring. Saw daffodils emerging in Charlotte, not flowering yet. Anyway, I enjoy a road trip. Not everybody likes the lack of seasons on I feel a little discombobulated when I avoid them.

Braved the snow and went to see "Shape of Water" last night. Visually interesting and a great performance by Sally Hawkins. The story is kind of a retread of Starman et al and some of the characters are stereotypes. Kept my interest and some good music.

We usually get seasons here, and we have a 10,000 foot mountain right out our front door. But it is a dry winter and the fire season is looking to be early, long and grim.
Sean Young was very good indeed, but, well, no human female could compete with Ornella Muti (in the very silly but very entertaining "Flash Gordon" of 1980).
Another vote for Altered Carbon. Even bought the novel it's based on, by Richard K. Morgan; am looking forward to seeing the 'neo-Cath' business developed in it, or, perhaps, them (there are three books in the series, I think).
