Sloppy Steve.

ADDED:

AND: "Sloppy" is good because Bannon looks extremely sloppy and there's also the idea that it was sloppy to leak so much (ick, bodily fluids) and to be so inattentive to what is true and what it means to be loyal.

The main problem is that Trump already used "sloppy" for Michael Moore.

With 2 data points on "sloppy," I get the impression that he feels disgust toward men who are fat and don't discreetly encapsulate the fat in a standard business suit (as he himself does).

I look forward to the articles of impeachment listing that he used the same nickname for two people.

That's just the kind of thing which will ensure a unanimous vote to remove from the Senate Dems.

Note: Leadership 101 teaches that sharp dressed and groomed leaders are loved and followed but sloppy dressed and groomed leaders are hated and resisted.

It ain't fair. But skills in leadership are a crucial element of...maybe a good President/Commander-in-Chief.

Ann Althouse said...

"#1 is Low Energy Jeb."

I agree. It was descriptive and not overly insulting.

Some of the others are so low, they make him look small. It's not presidential. But he succeeded, so that's the argument that it works. What price we pay for that success is another matter.

I'd like to credit him for creative destruction, but I'm afraid of destruction!

The worst of the nicknames is Pocahontas, because it isn't squarely directed at the target. It draws in other people who don't deserve attack — the historical figure Pocahontas and Native Americans in general.

I must be dense this morning. But If a brand applies equally to 2 or more people, why not use it . Is there a copywrite law here? Are all fat and bald men exempt from being branded after it has been used once? Does the copywrite expire in 50 years?

That's actually a pretty funny joke on Moore's part. Trump causes Moore to grow a sense of humor. Is there anything he can't do?

No. It hasn't lessen people's respect for Pocahontas and the Native Americans. That's misdirection.

Elizabeth Warren gamed the corrupt affirmative system by claiming to have Native American heritage to advance her career. Let her take a DNA test to prove it.

Hagar said...

"Sloppy Steve" is alliterative, so there is that.

"Cherokee Liz" is on target for Warren, since that is the tribe she claimed descent from.
"Pocahontas" I suppose is the one female "Indian" name Americans have heard in history class, but does not have anything to do with anything Warren.

Ann Althouse said...

""Cherokee Liz" is on target for Warren, since that is the tribe she claimed descent from."

No, because you're calling her what she is NOT and you're treating "Cherokee" as if it is a bad thing, like "crooked" and "sloppy."

Cherokee is not negative and should not be used in a way that makes it look like it's being thought of as a negative.

The insult intended against Warren is that she lied about her heritage and used a lie to gain advantages over other people. "Cherokee" does nothing to express that. "Fauxcohontas" is an attempt to express that, but I still don't like it, so I'll have to think of another reason for why I don't like it.

I'd rather see something that in no way expressed negativity toward being Native American. Something that says: Affirmative Action Cheater.

rehajm said...

I reject the criticism of the tweets as unpresidential. Of all the unpresidential things presidents have done and said Trump tweets are pretty tame. There's also a strategic reason for them and within that context they are effective.

We need a corollary to civility bullshit.

rhhardin said...

All aspects of Indian culture are risible. It's too primitive for serious treatment, so you get a PC fail, a huge strain on not noticing things.

To stick / be effective a Trump name needs to:

Michael Moore’s still around? I did not realize he was given the name sloppy.

Why isn’t he in the news more?

Perhaps because Moore’s brand is Midwest failing economies and the white working class, and Trump is doing well with both. Or the Democratic Party has left Moore? He did say trump could win, and that may have been an unforgivable sin to the left.

MacMacConnell said...

Bannon and Moore are two different types of sloppy. Moore is the "well yes that's nachos from last night on my sweatshirt" sloppy. Bannon is the "Ivy League/preppy go to hell" sloppy.

Sloppy and Michael Moore just go together. You can picture the sloppy joe juice dribbling down the sides of his mouth and onto his shirt where the belly projects so powerfully forward. I agree it was a mistake to use sloppy again. But I think that Lyin’ Ted, Crooked Hillary, and Rocket Man are up there, but it’s a pretty rarified list, and almost all of them are good. “Low Energy Jeb” was like a cruise missile. Crooked Hillary more like a naval bombardment, it took a lot of shells to do the work, but it did. My personal favorite nickname for Lyin’ Ted is Cardinal Cruz, after Cardinal Richelieu, but that was probably too obscure for the elections, proving Trump’s wisdom once again.

tim in vermont said...

Crazy Bernie was way too obvious. But I would really have liked to see the election between those too. I would have set up roll-aides stands in wealthy suburbs of capitols everywhere.

Hagar said...

"Cherokee Liz" is in no way "disrespectful" to Native Americans.
"My grandmother was a Cherokee princess" is a standing joke in the West that is gleefully told by the Cherokees themselves, and for that matter, Indians of any other western nation.

"Native American," however, that is disrespectful, since whenever asked, Indians say they prefer "American Indian," if you absolutely have to use a catch-all name rather than their respective tribal identities.

However, "Native American" is in the NYT style book, so "Native American" it is; never mind what those stupid Indians say!

tim in vermont said...

Indian Country Today is what they call their news outlet. Not The Native American News, or the Aboriginal Bugle.

But you know what? Rocket Man is talking with the South! Of course on Bloomberg they carefully explained that this was only because Rocket Man is such a reasonable man, and that Trump had nothing to do with it. FAKE NEWS!

And Bloomberg purports to provide real news that is investment grade.... sure.

I doubt the most cunningly tailored suit could unslop Michael Moore.

Slops

Slop

I was momentarily gripped by the urge to declare Moore's placard the most absurd concatenation of words since I never had sex with that woman, Monica Lewinsky, but then I realized Moore was referring to himself, an alledged human being whose consumption of Mother Earth's precious resources equals any five Bangladeshis or any twenty Somalis.

tim in vermont said...

The funny thing about Liz “Granny” Warren is that American Indians are pretty accepting about who is and isn’t an Indian. I read a book on American Indian literature written by a guy who grew up on the reservations in Minnesota, and he claimed what I have heard many times. If you think like an Indian, you are an Indian, skin color, hair, place of birth, have nothing to do with it. They are very accepting, adopting whites into their tribes freely, and sometimes those whites didn’t really want to be “rescued.” But they don’t like Granny Warren. They say she ignores them, ignores their issues, and doesn’t use her position to give them entré into the circles of white power she inhabits to help them as a people.

Hunter said...

"Crooked Hillary" and "Low Energy Jeb" need to rank higher on that list.

And "Pocahontas" isn't a Trump original. He just picked up an existing meme.

I'm not feeling the new one particularly, even with the alliteration bonus.

TrespassersW said...

I prefer "Fauxcahontas" for Warren.

"Sloppy Steve" has the alliteration thing going for it, so I get why Trump decided to use that for Bannon. Yeah, it fits Moore, too, but I think there are better nicknames you could come up with for him. Mikey the Movie-maker? Something with the diminutive "Mikey" in there, I think.

I can't be objective about "Lyin' Ted."

Well, kinda, but European superstitions are a lot stupider than typical Amerindian superstitions, and the creation myths are about equal in their lameness, e.g. -

And he thought of the world of nature as the Indian had always seen it. The whole world was animate — night and day, wind, clouds, trees, the young corn, all was alive and sentient. All matter had its inseparable spiritual essence. Of this universe man was an integral part. The beings about him were neither friendly nor hostile, but harmonious parts of the whole. There was no Satan, no Christ, no antithesis between good and evil, between matter and spirit. The world was simply one living whole in which man dies, but mankind remains. How then can man be lord of the universe? The forests have not been given him to despoil. He is equal in importance to the mountain and the blade of grass, to the rabbit and the young corn plant. Therefore if the life of one of these is to be used for his necessity, it must first be approached with reverence and permission obtained by ritual, and thus- the balance of the whole maintained intact.

Calling Steve and Mickie Sloppy is apropos for two reasons: first their work is truly sloppy and unprofessional and two they really truly are unkempt (hence, sloppy). It is a sad reflection of their lack of originality (Stevie and Mickie) as they have become indistinguishably pathetic in their production.

As for the presidential tweets, they are completely innovative: no longer is the public in the dark about where these characters stand with our imperious leader. The Donald has become a great leveler of Les grosses têtes (the hat thingy over the "e" means there SHOULD be an "s" there that would render "head" to "Testes" or balls, and should be translated as "(those with) Big Balls). He's a pretty open guy and gives as good as he gets.

I wonder what the people on this list call the President behind their closed doors?

More like misappropriation.
The NYT looks at Indians as museum exhibits and objects for virtue signaling rather than real people.

"Pocahontas" is the third best insult. Its draws attention to her LYING about native american heritage in order to get into Law school.

If Peeps are really so worked up about "Native Americans" (there is no such thing, there are only separate and distinct Indian tribes) they should dislike someone pretending to be one to secure an advantage.

The two best insults are "Low Energy Jeb" and "Cryin' Chuck Schumer".

BTW, I think the "Redskins" should change their name to the name of a local tribe. Calling them "redskins" is like calling "the Fighting Irish" the "Fighting "Mics" or the Vikings the "Square Heads"

People, it's not Pocahontas it's Fauxcahontas, comparable to Liawatha. (I know Trump got it wrong to start this off.) It's not about claiming tribal ancestry, as millions can and do, but about using that for personal advantage when one is in no way disadvantaged or culturally representative. It may be a critique of affirmative action, but it is in no way an insult to anyone. (Is something an insult if it's true? Hmmm.)

Althouse, the real problem with "Pocahontas" is that it's not insultive enough common or descriptive. "Fauxahontas" is already out there, so I must rate this as a swing-and-miss by the generally effective Trump. No big deal, nobody can bat 1.000.

Moore may be wrong. It's not possible to tell whether "sloppy" modified "Michale Moore" or "Show". If the latter, Trump's first use of the adjective for a person was Bannon. I only point this out to diminish Moore's self-image.

jaed said...

The problem with "Fauxahontas" is that it doesn't come across in the spoken form. It needs to be spelled out to be understood. Fine for tweeting, less good for a speech... and he called her Pocahontas in a speech.

The alternative "Lieawatha" works better when speaking.
