The President and the First Lady arrive at the Christmas Eve service at Bethesda-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church.

"Inside the church, festive with candles and Christmas trees, a choir, accompanied by brass instruments, organ and kettledrums, sang O Come All Ye Faithful, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, the First Noel and other carols. The president sat in the third row by the aisle. A crowd of people encircled the president to shake his hand when it came time for the peace-be-with-yous."

Mr Trump: This will not save you in 2020. You will be defeated in all states by Gillibrand or Warren or Harris. Your only chance to escape is to not run via health issues or accept Special Prosecutor decision to resign or get impeached.

Merry Christmas.

Best part of the story; in his homily, Rev. James Harlan quoted Nelson Mandela. From the Sun-Sentinel:

“Nelson Mandela, the great champion of racial equality in South Africa, was imprisoned for almost three decades for standing up to a government that was repressing, racist and all of that,” he said. “Nelson Mandela knew the power of words. He said it is never my custom to use words lightly. If 27 years in prison had done anything to us, it was to use the silence of solitude to make us understand how precious words are and how real speech is in its impact on the way people live and die.”

Maybe the most beautiful thing I heard this Christmas. And aimed at exactly the right audience.

Contra the Rev. James Harlan, Nelson Mandela wasn't imprisoned for simply "standing up to" the government. He was imprisoned for planning and engaging in sabotage--bombings and the like. And he wasn't framed. He admitted it in his statement from the dock during his trial at Rivonia. Among other things, he said, "I must deal immediately and at some length with the question of violence. Some of the things so far told to the Court are true and some are untrue. I do not, however, deny that I planned sabotage. I did not plan it in a spirit of recklessness, nor because I have any love of violence. I planned it as a result of a calm and sober assessment of the political situation that had arisen after many years of tyranny, exploitation, and oppression of my people by the Whites."

Mandela made principled distinctions about the kind of violence he and his followers would engage in. It's a pity his hagiographers don't do him the honor of presenting his deeds as candidly as he himself did.

Of course he would. The assumption, that Trump is "careless" with his tweets, is unproven. Just because someone does not approve of the tone or content of a message doesn't make it careless. Trump tweets to bypass the gatekeepers.

I heard uncharacteristic giggling on NPR's Morning Edition this morning. They were talking about Trump's Tweet (and then again in an address to U.S. military personnel) last night claiming that his administration was somehow bringing back the phrase "Merry Christmas" from an "assault."

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/945126026824298497?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.huffingtonpost.com%2Fentry%2Ftrump-merry-christmas-twitter_us_5a407757e4b0b0e5a7a2d23c

And of course they immediately played audio of President Obama, just last year, opening his Christmastime address to U.S. troops with a cheery "Merry Christmas"!

There was never a "war on Christmas." And of course, for real Christians, Christmas is a lesser holiday than the Holy Week of Easter, which gets practically none of this hyperbole. The "war on Christmas" is a Fox News/Bill O'Reilly thing, which naturally makes it catnip for Trump and his supporters. "Merry Christmas" is not a greeting or a warm wish so much as it is a cultural bludgeon.

So Merry Christmas, Althousians. And to Trump's Jewish daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren I say "Happy Hanukkah"! To everybody, regardless of faith or sect; Happy Holidays!

According to Wiki:

[The Episcopalian Church (TEC)] has opposed the death penalty and supported the civil rights movement and affirmative action. Some of its leaders and priests are known for marching with influential civil rights' demonstrators such as Martin Luther King Jr. The Church calls for the full legal equality of gay and lesbian people, a movement partly inspired by their similar call for racial equality during the mid-1950s. In 2015, the Church's 78th annual General Convention passed resolutions allowing the blessing of same-sex marriages and approved two official liturgies to bless such unions, though they are not yet official rites within the Book of Common Prayer. Due to the complex process of editing or making additions to the Prayer Book, the BCP still describes marriage as being the union of a man and a woman.

Being a sometimes devout Christian (when it suits the circumstance), Donald obviously follows the preferences of the religion of his Scottish mother - or not, depending about what he saw on TV today.

The Reverend Harlan missed an important piece of Nelson Mandela history:

Before becoming South Africa’s post-apartheid president in 1994, Nelson Mandela headed up a terrorist organization that was responsible for thousands of deaths—most of it black-on-black crime. Mandela also had strong ties to communism, an ideology responsible for more death and destruction over the last century than any other political movement.

I think the nicest thing Trump did this Christmas was to decrease his taxes by charging it to the national debt, rather than by offsetting it with much higher taxes on the backs of the working class Americans. (Some of their taxes will rise, of course, but probably not all that much in the aggregate). It was a nice Christmas gift on his part to the nation. Instead of offsetting his tax break with higher taxes on most other Americans, he decided to send the bill to our future generations. Very generous of him! Future generations will thank the president for how he thought of them in this very kind and selfless way.

Yeah, riiiight; that's what Trump was talking about. King Herod, and the Romans, and whatever.

Yeah, that's the ticket!

I wonder how long it would have taken in an answer from Trump to the question, "Can you explain what you mean, by 'War on Christmas'?" for him to get around to Herod, or 17th century Puritans. Probably about the same amount of time as a team of monkeys, to type Paul's Second Letter to the church in Corinth.

Trump was talking 21st century popular American culture. Everybody understands that. Because popular American culture (mostly 20th century, I'd argue) is all that Trump knows. As long as it was on TV at some time or another.

Probably only if you sought to libel, torture, massacre or forcibly convert them. So relatively speaking, merely haranguing them for not subscribing to the (for now) dominant theology must sound like a very neighborly mercy - at least among those dominant theology practitioners who require imagining that they themselves are persecuted. You know. By disposable coffee mugs.

In the spirit of Christmas of the New Year, perhaps we could all chip in and buy a brand new "dossier" for the dems and their LLR allies.

Except this time, lets try something a bit more "realistic" than that last piece of obvious garbage LLR Chuck's lefty allies used to spy on domestic political opponents.

How about, Trump went to North Korea like, I don't know, 8 years ago, and was allowed to strangle people to death as partial payment for a new Trump Resort adjacent to a planned NK nuke missile launch site?

You know, something that will capture the imagination of the lefties now that the last "dossier" has officially fizzled out based on testimony under oath by Brennan, Clapper, Comey and "li'l Comey" McCabe.

I can't wait to see how Alex Baldwin will run with this new story line! So many possibilities, all breathlessly awaited by Chuck.

The coming New Year already seems brighter and best of all it will help distract from all those hate crimes committed by Christians a thousand years ago that the lefties want to discuss constantly and hold all Christians accountable for today!

Full Moon as long as you are determined to drive all of this into the ditch with a personal attack on me entirely unrelated reference, I just have to ask; was my admonition from Althouse around the time that our hostess unwittingly posted the phony story wherein Milo Yiannopoulos falsely claimed that "NPR" had spiked his book-promotion interview? After which NPR and WNPR-Connecticut Public Radio (and Snopes) all carefully explained what was wrong with the Milo story. And then, WNPR aired the time-edited interview (as they had planned all along), conclusively putting the lie to the original Milo story.

For my part, having originally taken the side of NPR versus Milo, and having been abused in a 300-comment donnybrook, I made sure to come back to say that I had been right all along.

I think that is when Althouse admonished me. She wanted to MoveOn.

Ayn Rand, The Fountainhead...

Re: Ayn Rand, check out these interesting tidbits about her providing the inspiration for the Church of Satan. Nice thing to remind oneself on Christmas Day:

Objectivism, the philosophy of Ayn Rand, is an acknowledged source for some of the Satanic philosophy as outlined in The Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey. Ayn Rand was a brilliant and insightful author and philosopher and her best-selling novels Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead continue to attract deserved attention for a new generation of readers.

...and...

The historian of Satanism Ruben van Luijk characterised it as a form of "anarchism of the Right". LaVey was anti-egalitarian and elitist, believing in the fundamental inequality of different human beings. His philosophy was Social Darwinist in basis, having been influenced by the writings of Herbert Spencer, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Ayn Rand. LaVey stated that his Satanism was "just Ayn Rand's philosophy with ceremony and ritual added".

Interesting lady to quote today.

buwaya said...

Ayn Rand needed salvation, certainly.

She was a rather haunted atheist, suffering all her life from the political disasters of her childhood, a trauma of the Russian revolution. She had a powerful thirst for vengeance against those that tore her life apart.

She was full of pride, and a brittle sort of bravado. Much of what she wrote and did was a rationalization of her coping strategy I think.

But in any case, she was a genius of her own sort, a creative thinker, and above all an extremely perceptive critic. She had a mind full of flaying knives, able to skin a character and reveal the diseased tissue beneath. Her greatest skill was understanding her enemies. Her works are a complex mix of perception, description, fantasy, bile, and shaky rationalization.

She was excellent at diagnosis, but not so good at solutions.

In the context of the 20th century she was a major force, a great fount of realistic insight. Its no accident that she was far more influential in the great days of American popular education, when the masses could process complexity and understand what she was saying. That level of thought about large matters is nearly gone among the general public. Ayn Rand, or anyone like her, could never sell that many books today.

Its interesting that those compilers of hagiographies of great and influential women never count Ayn Rand. Who was greater by far than any "feminist".

buwaya said...

The greatest influence on Anton La Vey and all that ilk of pretend-satanists, is, as always, the Catholic Church.

They hate that above all. Every satanist is an inverse-Catholic.

Interesting but not surprising. Rand personified the power of an individual who had seen and rejected all the lies.

While I found her characters markedly soul-less, her novels were important works. Most of my friends and I read Rand in high school. My BF [my first husband] and I would spend many hours discussing her work, both pros and cons. Her 'sermons' were sometimes too long but she made a point about human nature and what motivates excellence that needs reviving today.

I bet you're used to having conversations about yourself. And about all those ladies that you're a-protectin' with your good old fashioned purity! (Including your wife. Could a guy have a more transparently revelatory about his marital shortcomings and woes? I don't think so).

So exactly what kind of heavy equipment castrated you, Fool Moron? And what's it like getting as drunk as you do while gettin' all down with 2nd-wave puritanical feminist philosophy with the fellow construction workers? That sounds like a real hoot. Tell the truth, were you catcalled or something?

I think there's a greater than 50% chance he was raped after hours at the construction site. That would be gross and unexpected even for a bricklayer, but it's the only thing that explains this weirdo's militant sexless feminism. Well, that and, you know... the castration incident.

Anyway, re Ritmo -

There isnt much left of "Filipino Folk Religion" that isn't fundamentally Christianity, with remnants of folk magic and animism. The concepts of sin, of salvation, of God, Jesus, etc. are all there. I've had somewhat to do with manghuhulas (witches), and my brother-in-law, hailing from the region by the sacred mount Banahaw, has had much more. Note however that these are Tagalog (ethnic) folkways and can be very different from the style of such things in even other Christian lowland peoples.

There are actual religions specific to particular tribes (not generic "Folk") almost all highlanders, and these are quite diverse. They and their associated folkways are not live-and-let live. Do not, for instance, mess with Ifugao women.

The world is a complicated place. But one thing is sure - church, there, is church, and the culture there works like an iron hand. Inside a very well padded glove, but iron indeed.
