"Someone told me, who’s friends with someone in the White House or formerly in the White House, that Melania Trump loves SNL and she loves my impersonation."

Said Alec Baldwin.
According to this unnamed source inside the White House (or formerly in the White House), the First Lady loves the bombastic impression because of it’s accuracy, as Melania allegedly said “that’s exactly what he’s like.” The actor added, “Trump is horrified and beside himself that his wife actually thinks it’s funny.”
How much of that do you believe?

Just my wild guess but she doesn't seem like much of a comedy kinda gal. Has anyone ever seen her laugh?

I Have Misplaced My Pants said...

That's not a criticism ~ she just seems to have a very dignified and reserved personality.

So play the Kevin Bacon game: Alec Baldwin knows Lorne Michaels who knows Barack Obama. Doesn't make the statement true...

Looks like Baldwin cashed in some favors to change the headline from "Baldwin Weinstein" to "Baldwin Trump."

I've caught some of impersonation. It's terrible. Done with hate, not humor.

Yeah, I'm sure Alec Baldwin has lots of sources in the Trump WH. Baldwin is such a sterling character, how can you not believe him?

TrespassersW said...

Preface: Yeah, I'm carping needlessly.

The question doesn't give enough options. What about:
I don't believe anybody told Baldwin this.
I believe that someone told Baldwin this, but I think they made it up.

Bill, Republic of Texas said...

Baldwin is a horrible person. He is a child abuser, misogynist and homophobe. Why he is allowed in polite company I will never know (actually I do know because he has liberal privilege).

I agree that's a valid fine point, but use the first option if that is really what you think.

A story this well sourced belongs in The New York Times.

This assumes that Melania plays Eva Gabor to Trump's Eddy Arnold on Green Acres.

Baldwin's impression is good. The guy who parodied Bill Clinton in the 90s was also good. I believe Trump's wife thinks it's funny whether she told anyone or not. His kids probably dig it, too.

Quaestor said...

The name Alec Baldwin ought never appear on the same page as the word culture.

"I'm simply quoting Trump's good friend Kanye"

Ah yes, the old Andrew Sullivan "I'm just asking questions" tactic.

A story lefties will love and will absolutely take at face value? Check.

Two anonymous and uncheckable intermediaries between Baldwin and Melania? Check.

Other than that, this story sounds totally legit.

I love your third choice. Not only do I think that is closest to truth, but it seems most human, the way real husbands and wives with some intelligence and humor interact.

People were already douchebags. Trump helps them express it.

According to this Keebler Elf inside the White House (or formerly in the White House), the First Lady loves Keebler Cookies because the Elves baked their cookies the old-fashioned elfin way, in magic ovens in the Hollow Tree® (aka the Fac-Tree). Filled with scrumptious smells and alive with the industry of baking, the tree is the very hub of elfin activity.

No one knows exactly how long the Elves have been baking (they are, after all, ageless). One thing we do know is that they have always remained true to their creed:

"We pledge to pursue our goal of baking cookies, crackers and snacks that are, by whatever measure one chooses to apply, Uncommonly Good®."

Correct. In the end, the lefties and their LLR allies will always dial it up to "11" on any republican.

Just look at LLR Chucks heroes (Kristol/McMuffin) and the VA Gov race where all of sudden Ed Gillespie is SURPRISE!!, literally Hitler.

Wow.

Did not see that coming...

As much as Sanders is a Democrat. He ran and was elected as a Republican. There will be an R after his name in the history book.

And as for Congress, so far Trump has been a much better republican than the Republicans in Congress. Which is how we got trump in the first place.

Drago said...

Earnest: "Trump is a Republican? He better let Congress know that before it gets too late."

I read that Trump was a republican from the sign over the candidates during the debates as well as the little indicator on the Ballot beside Trumps name.

But then, not everyone is a reader.

I skimmed through last weeks SNL and was noticing how joyless it was. The obligatory cold open with some trump skit than blends in with all the others. Thanks god Hulu lets you fast forward through crap (except commercials) No wonder they are projecting that trump will quit because its exactly what they are feeling. They want to quit but their masters demand more trump ridicule. On the double. HUP HUP HUP Dance monkeys DANCE! But even now their feet are getting sore and their mind is wandering. How long can they keep this up?

The most unbelievable part was "Melania loves SNL."

Yeah,right.

exiledonmainstreet, green-eyed devil said...

Baldwin, of course, is trying to play up the notion that Melania secretly hates Trump and is "trapped" and unhappy. That's the narrative for leftists who kinda want to like Melania. The only way they can do so is by pretending she's a hapless victim - because the left just loves them some hapless victims.

Others on the left have no problem at all hating Melania. They hope she gets raped, mock her accent, call her stupid, etc.

Michael K said...

The only part that Baldwin played that looked believable was when he was fucking Melanie Griffith's best friend in "Working Girl."

- I found myself wanting an option for "Either of these things is possible, but having Alec Baldwin say that some nameless person in the White House told him that makes me no more likely to believe it than if I'd just dreamed it up myself."
(In the absence of such an option, I chose 1.)

- This story cries out for the use of Iowahawk's Substitution: whenever you see "anonymous source", mentally substitute "mysterious gypsy woman". For example:
"A mysterious gypsy woman familiar with Comey's thinking says..."
"Three highly-placed mysterious gypsy women in the State Department..."
"According to a mysterious gypsy woman inside the White House..."

It's interesting Baldwin uses the word "impersonation" rather than "impression."

Most comedic artists use the word impression. Impression means you capture the person's presence, their essence. Any comedic content that follows is based on transmogrifying that person's essence onto whatever comedic vehicle you wish, the more ridiculous the better. You are putting that person in a silly situation outside of their true identity.

Impersonation implies actually representing yourself as that person. That's exactly where Baldwin's "impersonation" misses the mark. He's so intent on "informing" the audience about how bad Trump is as a person, as his comedic vehicle, whatever essence of the Trump his impression captures is overwhelmed by his proselytizing "impersonation."

Sad!

Drago said...

Curious George: "Looks like Baldwin cashed in some favors to change the headline from "Baldwin Weinstein" to "Baldwin Trump."'

No, more like Baldwin paid Fusion GPS to plant stories with "objective reporters" to advance the narrative.

That appears to be the standard operating procedure of todays lefties.

Bob Ellison said...

The "anonymous source" is often the very person in the story. E.g. "An anonymous source close to the Vice President says he thinks Trump's ties are too long" means Mike Pence was the source.

Darrell said...

I think it's an attempt to get Trump to notice what he (Baldwin) is doing. I may have missed it, but I don't think I've ever heard Trump comment on SNL.

Also, it may be something Alec is telling himself to buck up. He's really only on SNL to do his Trump impression and that's starting to wear thin. Maybe he's worried he's going to fired.

Not that's there's anything wrong with that.

Baldwin was great in Glengarry Glen Ross and 30 Rock and charming in a number of his movie roles. His Trump "impersonation" is not very good because the scripts aren't very funny. Give the man a good script and he's good.
