November 25, 2017

It can't be that Time colludes with prospective Persons of the Year to see what access it can get out of the process of honoring somebody.

Apparently, Trump needed some action last night and this must have seemed like a good gambit.

Of course, Time defends its reputation.

Time doesn't say exactly what it does in the choosing process, only that in some way the President is "incorrect." It doesn't say he's completely wrong.  But Time is getting us to notice the annual nonsense of Person of the Year, and Trump wins too because he's making (some of) us think of course he deserves it (probably), but Time won't give it to him unless the Art-of-the-Deal man makes some deal with them. I'm picturing the editors rubbing their hands together and saying "I've got this thing and it's fucking golden, and, uh, uh, I'm just not giving it up for fuckin' nothing. I'm not gonna do it."

But who really gives a damn how the process they make us look at every year actually works? It's better to leverage the occasion. Go big, go arty, go comical, go hardcore. Like Rose McGowan:

Don't like that? Then go big, arty, comical, and hardcore in the direction in a pro-Trump direction (or some other direction that suits your taste). If you like Trump, don't be boring. Be creative and viral. We're all diseased.

ADDED: If Time is right and the President is incorrect, does that make Michael Moore a liar?
Film-maker Michael Moore claims that director Mel Gibson cost him the opportunity to be Person of the Year alongside Gibson in 2004. Moore's controversial political documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 became the highest-grossing documentary of all time the same year Gibson's The Passion of the Christ became a box-office success and also caused significant controversy. Moore said in an interview "I got a call right after the '04 election from an editor from Time Magazine. He said,' Time Magazine has picked you and Mel Gibson to be Time's Person of the Year to put on the cover, Right and Left, Mel and Mike. The only thing you have to do is pose for a picture with each other. And do an interview together.' I said 'OK.' They call Mel up, he agrees. They set the date and time in LA. I'm to fly there. He's flying from Australia. Something happens when he gets home... Next thing, Mel calls up and says, 'I'm not doing it. I've thought it over and it is not the right thing to do.' So they put Bush on the cover."
ALSO: Would Time ever give the honor to the same person 2 years in a row? While a good number of men have been Man of the Year more than once, the only person who won 2 years in a row was Richard Nixon, and in the second year, he was a co-winner with Henry Kissinger. I think Trump — if indeed he was in serious consideration for the honor — was at serious risk of being paired with someone else. While Nixon getting paired with his National Security Adviser was not disrespectful to Nixon, if you look at the last time a President got paired with someone else, it was Bill Clinton, in 1998, paired with his nemesis, Ken Starr. So I think if Trump was under consideration, it was in some way where he wasn't the sole honoree, but put alongside #MeToo or The Women Who Spoke Out or Rose McGowan and Ronan Farrow or something that Trump wouldn't want anyway.

Thanks to Joe, sexting, which ageist prejudice once restricted to the teen set and those in good shape, is now open to everyone. Now, even men close to seventy can perform sex acts in poorly lit videos that they can share on the internet without consequence. Three cheers for Joe, you are never too old to try new things.

"Go big, go arty, go comical, go hardcore."

For some reason this makes me think of the Eighties.

Being at a friend's house, in the living room of which his parents had a framed Pat Nagel print over the magenta couch.

Just a year before they had a Seventies couch. Earth Tones. They now had an Eighties couch.

Time Magazine's Man of the Year for 1982 was "The Computer." That could've been on the glass coffee table.

As for hardcore:

Wild boys fallen far from glory
Reckless and so hungered
On the razors edge you trail
Because there's murder by the roadside
In a sore afraid new world
They tried to break us
Looks like they'll try again
Wild boys (wild boys) never lose it
Wild boys (wild boys) never chose this way
Wild boys (wild boys) never close your eyes
Wild boys always shine

Go big, go arty, go comical, go hardcore: sometimes Duran Duran went four-for-four.

I'd tell Rose McGowan that her 15 minutes are up, but she's over in the corner with a straw up her nose. That's not a good look for an actress who's not exactly swimming in scripts these days.

But seriously, f**k Time. No one who voted for Trump reads it. They'll likely screw with the cover photo to make him look bad, they way they did with Bush 41 and John McCain. What, they're going to do a complimentary piece? Not in this decade. There's just no upside.

As for the "Must be a pretty picture, you dropping to your knees" on Rose McGowan, Trump made the remark in an episode of “Celebrity Apprentice 6” during a discussion with Brande Roderick and rock star Bret Michaels.

“Brande came in here, “ Michaels said on the show, “She got down on her knees and said, ‘I passionately want to do this—' ”

“Excuse me, you dropped to your knees?” Trump interrupted.

“Yes,” Roderick responded.

Trump was making fun of the fact that she literally got on her knees to "beg" her case in the silly competition. Doesn't seem very businesslike to me, either. "Must be a pretty picture, you dropping to your knees" was said because it's a TV show and you're trying to keep it interesting to the audience with sexual innuendo you can get away with, with a mixed audience.

“I actually didn’t even remember him saying that,” Roderick, to whom the comment was directed, said on MSNBC’s “Live with Thomas Roberts” on Friday.Roderick said Trump has always treated her with respect.

“I’ve always had a positive experience around Donald. He’s always been encouraging. He’s never been disrespectful to me,” Roderick said after they showed her the clip of Trump's remark. “I don’t condone men being derogatory, but I think he was just — he’s on television, he’s trying to be funny. I don’t think that he meant anything horrible by it.”

In the meantime, her original tweet travels lefty cyberland, and is picked up by White House correspondent April Ryan. Ryan then goes on a tweetstorm about Sarah Huckabee Sanders' 'fake pie'.

Trump isn’t disputing anything,

“TIME Magazine refuted President Donald Trump's claim, in which he suggested he "was PROBABLY going to be named" the magazine's 2017 "Person of the Year."

It’s just another example of Trump lying and Time called him on it publicly. From their statement it appears they are saying they did not call him to tell him he would be Man of the Year and he lied when he said he turned it down. That’s pretty clear to most people unless they go out of their way to spin Trump’s lie into something else, as they usually do. The constant twisting, turning, excuse making for Trump is really getting old and stale.

Trump has long been obsessed with being on the cover of Time. To assert that he thumbs his nose at Time is laughable.

"Amazing," tweeted Time's chief content officer, Alan Murray. "Not a speck of truth here — Trump tweets he 'took a pass' at being named TIME's person of the year.

If any of this shocks you, you haven't been paying attention. In fact, Trump's focus on Time magazine -- and especially the publication's choice for man/person of the year -- is a long-running obsession that predates his political career.
"I knew last year that @TIME Magazine lost all credibility when they didn't include me in their Top 100...," Trump tweeted in October 2012.

He sounded a similar note the following April. "The Time Magazine list of the 100 Most Influential People is a joke and stunt of a magazine that will, like Newsweek, soon be dead. Bad list!," he tweeted. (Trump didn't make the list. This fact should not stun you.)

Despite sending a bevy of other tweets between 2012 and 2015 deriding Time for being "paper thin" and "really flimsy," the magazine returned to Trump's good graces in 2015 when his out-of-nowhere presidential campaign landed him the cover.

“Later that year, however, Trump returned to his previous disdain -- after, in his mind, being snubbed for person of the year when Time chose German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"I told you @TIME Magazine would never pick me as person of the year despite being the big favorite," Trump tweeted. "They picked person who is ruining Germany."

(One tweet on not winning Time's person of the year wasn't enough for Trump. On the same day as the tweet above -- December 9, 2015 -- he also tweeted this: "Thank you @oreillyfactor for your wonderful editorial as to why I should have been @TIME Magazine's Person of the Year. You should run Time!")

Trump's yo-yoing views about Time spun back positive in early 2016 when he made the cover again. "Remember, get TIME magazine!," he tweeted. "I am on the cover. Take it out in 4 years and read it again! Just watch..."

Then, following his election victory, Trump was -- finally, in his mind -- named person of the Year. He tweeted: "Thank you to Time Magazine and Financial Times for naming me "Person of the Year" - a great honor!"”

With only two weeks to the finish line, the 32-year-old, who is embarking on a modernization project in the kingdom long governed by the ultraconservative Wahhabi strand of Islam, sits on 22 percent of the vote out of 33 choices in the poll.

Trump, who won the title last year, is far behind in second place, with just 5 percent of the vote. The American president is tied with members of DACA protection program for undocumented migrants - who Trump proposed deporting - and with the hashtag #MeToo, a campaign to out high-profile figures accused of sexual assault and rape.”

Germane to the post's topic, Trump continues to use Twitter to distract the left and the media from what he doesn't want them paying attention to. What is he distracting them from now? Perhaps it is that several articles have come out listing his impressive accomplishments so far, including National Review (of all places), or some of the things Jeff Sessions has been doing way, way under the radar. Or perhaps there is something else that he doesn't want attention paid to by the media. Much of what's he accomplished isn't getting much play in the media, even though they would normally be all over it, but they are too busy responding to his distracting tweets.

And spite is what got Trump elected, it won’t get him a second term, IF he lasts that long.

There was a time (heh!) when the popular culture could be ruled by Boomers, most of them from bourgeois families, taking a common "party line." Nixon was a crook, Ford was an idiot, Reagan was an amiable dunce. Blowjobs aren't sex, whatever. If you didn't toe the line, you had no career. You weren't "one of us."
Those days seem to have gone by. They can still dictate terms within their group, but they don't seem to be able to sway popular culture anymore. Despite attacks against Trump that made him out to be a Hitler-and-Putin lovin' obnoxious male chauvinist who cannot count to above ten if his shoes are on, the numbers from the 2016 election were almost identical to the number Romney got in the 2012 election.

Yancey Ward said...

No, Inga, they did not. What they wrote in their tweet was that Trump was "incorrect" about how they choose person of the year. What they notably didn't write was that they didn't call Trump to discuss the issue. If Trump was lying, I would have expected them to deny they called Trump in the first place, but they didn't do that.

Lewis Wetzel said...

"Time already did, lol."
Asserions are proof, now?

Yancey Ward said...

When you read a denial, make sure you understand what is being denied and what isn't being denied.

Occam's Razor suggests exactly two reasonable explanations for what the two tweets mean:

(1) Time was quite reasonably wanting to ensure that if they chose Trump, he would be willing sit for an interview and a photography session. You can be absolutely certain that they do this every time they choose a human being or an organization made up of people. In the case of Trump, it is completely reasonable that he would be selected and would have been called to check on his availability for the interview and photography session. Trump's tweet was basically him saying he wasn't going sit for either one with them.

(2) Curious George had the other reasonable explanation, Time was trolling Trump with the call, and Trump trolled back by "declining it". This explanation has the power that it explains Trump's emphasizing the word "probably" in the manner he did- he is trying to let you know he didn't actually believe it was "probably", and got out in front by preemptively turning it down.

Inga...Allie Oop said...

“If Trump was lying, I would have expected them to deny they called Trump in the first place, but they didn't do that.”

They didn’t call him a liar to his face in those words, they used words that most people understand mean exactly that.

What Time seems to be trying to communicate is that they hadn't yet decided on naming Trump Person of the Year, so he couldn't have turned it down- I do believe this part- it would be crazy to name someone without getting at least an interview for the issue. That is why their communications on the matter was non-specific- if they weren't non-specific, Trump could just show the call log and prove them lying.

And note, again, Trump doesn't appear to have believed he was actually under consideration- he didn't say he turned down the honor. Murray's denial is that Trump took a pass on being honored- Trump didn't- Trump told them he wasn't going to make time for an interview unless it was already decided, and who can blame him?

Inga...Allie Oop said...

LOL!

Yancey Ward said...

And Inga comes up this beauty:

“AND A FORMER TIME EDITOR CHIMED IN TO LET THE PRESIDENT KNOW THE CALL MEANT (emphasis added by YW) HE PROBABLY WOULD NOT BE NAMED PERSON OF THE YEAR"

I don't know about you, Inga, but this is an admission that Time did call Trump. I consider this case closed. You are asking us to believe a call about Person of the Year asking for a photo shoot meant Trump was out of the running. It didn't claim the call specifically informed Trump he was out of the running- only that, for some odd reason, it should have been interpreted that way. Why? I have no clue why anyone would interpret it that way.

So after Lefties are embarrassed, all they have to say is something else, and we have to accept that as fact. Huh.

Yancey Ward said...

Inga, even Trump didn't say they offered it, or is it a case that you can't read simple English?

Trump wrote in his tweet that Time called him and told him he was "PROBABLY" going to be selected, and asked for an interview and photograph session. Trump says he replied that "PROBABLY" wasn't going to be good enough for him to agree to either request. What part of that do you not understand?

Here is the entirety of what Time has said about it- that Trump wasn't chosen yet, they didn't deny calling Trump to inquire about an interview and photography session, and they have written that Trump didn't turn down Person of the Year. They are basically denying things Trump didn't write, and being silent about the things Trump did write in the tweet. It is easy to determine who is more accurate here, but it is an answer you don't like.

Inga...Allie Oop said...

They most likely told him he PROBABLY would NOT be Man of the Year. And he was insulted and needed to save face when they announced who did actually win, so he lied, saying they told him he’d PROBABLY be Man of the Year. But he turned them down.

Yancey Ward said...

So, Inga, you just can't read. Here is your latest comment in its entirety:

"Time may have called him, who said they didn’t? They didn’t offer him Man of the Year. THAT is the issue in dispute."

Trump didn't say they offered it, Trump was quite specific in writing that it wasn't offered, only that he was told he was "PROBABLY" going to be selected. So far, nothing you have posted contradicts this- at best Time and its officers seem to be denying that they told Trump he was going to be selected, something even Trump didn't claim by your own statement I just quoted.

Yancey Ward said...

Another classic by Inga:

"They most likely told him he PROBABLY would NOT be Man of the Year."

But no one at Time has written that either, Inga- just the one quote from someone who doesn't even work at Time. And why would they call Trump to tell him that in the first place? Time hasn't even denied they called Trump and told him he was "probably" going to be Person of the Year- only that he wasn't told he was going to be Person of the Year. The distinction matters, even if you keep deliberately lying about it.

Inga...Allie Oop said...

The New York Times reported Saturday that the president voiced disbelief at his daughter's remark, which came after numerous women alleged that Moore pursued sexual and romantic relations with them when they were teenagers and he was in his early 30s.

“Do you believe this?” Trump asked several aides in the Oval Office, according to the Times.”

He suggested to a senator earlier this year that it was not authentic, and repeated that claim to an adviser more recently. (In the hours after it was revealed in October 2016, Mr. Trump acknowledged that the voice was his, and he apologized.)”
