At the Number 3 Café...

IMG_1666

... I'm sure you have 3 topics or 3 observations or 3 hopes/dreams to share.

And I hope/dream you have 3 things you need to buy through The Althouse Amazon Portal.

I do all my Amazon ordering through your portal, madam. So I am not #3; I am #1.

Trump appoints Mulvaney as the new head of CFPB.
A set up for going to court and having SCOTUS declare the whole agency "illegal" to start with?

I'm making spaghetti sauce today.

Brown 85/15 ground beef with a diced medium onion, and a little salt and pepper.

Transfer to a crock pot. Sprinkle over the top one teaspoon each of oregano and basil; half teaspoon of garlic powder; quarter teaspoon of celery seed.

Stir in two 28 ounce cans of crushed tomatoes.

Heat in the crock pot for 90 minutes on high, and another couple hours on low.

Gravy to die for.

I am hazy about how it started; alcohol was probably involved.

I would walk past a group of heroin kids outside what was, at the time, the Big 5 Sporting Goods store. They typically had a cardboard sign on the sidewalk, asking for money. Sometimes the writing on the cardboard attempted to be clever, or funny, or appeal to emotion, with the occasional decorative squiggly lines or smiley face; sometimes it just simply asked.

I was at the Bartell's Drugs on the corner, picking up a few items, of which I cannot remember. For some reason I also picked up several two-packs of hard-boiled eggs from the refrigerated section.

Outside the store, as I approached the heroin kids, I took the eggs out of the bag, and then gave the packages to them. They were a bit baffled, but appreciative. Maybe a bit disappointed it wasn't just cash. I wasn't going to give them money which then would inevitably be used for drugs; I figured the eggs weren't worth selling for them, and had more nutrition than the junk food remnants left behind by students that the heroin kids then had scrounged from the trash cans.

So I did this from time to time. They would call me the Egg Man. Eventually that group faded away; different places, ODs, whichever. There have been new groups of heroin kids that have claimed that spot -- prime real estate, I guess -- and their numbers change. They also seem a lot harder, more with dead eyes. I no longer brought eggs.

I know, I know: Expert, texpert choking smokers / Don't you think the joker laughs at you.

Drudge-taposition: three men on Drudge right now.

Sir Richard Branson, British billionaire and well-known boating enthusiast, has been accused of “motorboating” a plus-sized black female pop singer (w/o her consent), which is… well, I’ll let you discover on your own what that is. Then we have Jeff Bezos, who is way wealthier than Branson (though at that level, what the hell difference does is make, amiright?). To our knowledge, Bezos has never been accused of SexPred (or even garden-variety perv) behavior. Finally, Tim Tebow, who is now a baseball player. If he was ever accused of anything like that, well, it would be enormously out of character! He’s still saving himself for Mrs. Tebow.

OK, I'm glad to hear that the State Department is draining the swamp. But what's the deal about Hungary? Sounds like the State Dept. is funding Hungarian media to propagandize against anti-globalization, anti-immigration sentiments. Remember when the US wanted to 'let Poland be Poland'? Why can't we let Hungary be Hungary? Heaven knows it's too late for Britain, France and Germany.

Re james james piece: Drug addicts need to be rounded up and put into locked rehabilitation camps. Meth-heads in one section, crack-heads in another and a whole camp for heroin addicts. These camps should be well staffed by professionals and other staff who are firm but caring--possibly former addicts who aren't prey to manipulation. Preferably NOT psychologists. These people should be kept at least a year, given ample nutrition and outdoor activities as well as spiritual guidance. These measures are both for the good of the addicts and for the community at large. Crime would likely decrease dramatically.

How to fund? Why not start a Go Fund Me account? I would be much happier giving to a worthy operation than to pay taxes for some kind of government program. Another possibility for fund raising is to ask for donations at the supermarket when you pay your bill, just as they often do for other, less worthy causes. Anyway, it's a thought.

A few weeks ago a Traffic Enforcement Officer was walking down the sidewalk, issuing tickets. The city needs to keep feeding the machine that is the city, fifty-ish dollars at a time. Recently they removed some parking spaces and replaced them with yellow curbs -- no doubt it has increased the volume of infractions. Sly, in a bureaucratic conniving way.

The first car she tickets is a yellow Maserati. There are three Maseratis that occasionally park on this block of the street. All are driven by Japanese students. There is a Japanese karaoke club they frequent in a building upstairs; they wait outside and smoke until it opens in the evening. An expensive door fee to get in pretty much keeps everyone else out: if that is the plan then the plan is working. I think it is the plan.

On the street, it is surprising to see young men who do not affect the American gangsta stances and poses. Even here, they are on an island. They stand by an expensive car, flashy rims, but they do not use that car as a portable stereo to blast the vicinity. Polite is it's own cool.

As the Enforcement Officer makes her way, she comes to a sprawl of heroin kids on the sidewalk; at least two are fully passed-out. She pauses for a moment, then steps over them to issue another ticket, this time to a beaten-up old pick-up with red-tape for a tail-light.

A bit later, one of the Japanese kids notices his ticket, shrugs. Doesn't look like he is going to lose any sleep over it.

I keep getting prompts to install macOS High Sierra. Have Ann or other commenters in macworld done this? What's the upside/downside?

Upside: Takes up less space on the hard drive. Very stable. Noticeably faster.

Downside: The day after Thanksgiving when dad gets a ransomware pop-up in Safari and freaks out, so you run AVG, delete the old Bootcamp partition, and after asking if his photos are backed up in iCloud try to update his OS from Yosemite, the install crashes leaving the main partition unmounted and mom says it was her photos backed up in iCloud, not dad's.

Along with chocolate pecan pies Sarah Huckabee Sanders needs to make a couple banana cream pies. I can think of a couple faces in the press pool that would be immensely improved with banana cream filling dripping off their faces.

I was watching the Badgers trash the Golden Gophers but it became boring, so one-sided.

My Huskies are playing tonight but I'm rooting for the WSU Cougars because they have a chance in the playoffs and UW[A] doesn't. Should be a good game.

Auburn doing well against the number one 'Bama.

The Wisconsin Badgers are indisputably now the #3 Team in the BCS, sharing undefeated status with Central Florida. And when they clobber Ohio State next week, the will jump over Oklahoma which never has brought a defense onto the field and Clemson which is just hanging around because of last year.

Does hijab barbie's head detach easily?

How will the manufacturer accurately capture the required FGM?

We want this doll to be authentic, right?

@gadfly, Wisconsin is the only undefeated team from a major conference. How is it not #1?

China has closed the main bridge both vehicle and rail between China and NK. US/SK joint exercises next month. Trump has formed a coalition in East Asia and has put enormous pressure on Xi. I am not in the know how this is supposed to go, but the dominoes are ready to fall.

Of course the Chinese Foreign Minister insists it's only closed for maintenance to the approach road but there is no mention of when it might be reopened. I suspect Xi fears trouble near the border soon.

Every eye in the region is on NK. The Chinese know what the "routine maintenance" with an "undetermined completion date" is signaling. Unlike J. Farmer I don't believe 'Fatty Kim',as the Chinese call him, (shoulda used that moniker Donald!) is a rational actor. The best hope is 'he dies in his sleep'. Trump seems adamant that this is to be solved one way or another. China's position of using NK as a thorn in America's side is untenable thanks to Trump's diplomacy. Russia seems the recalcitrant player, but I'm unsure what sway they hold either way. The dominoes are in place. When two more carriers are moved to the region conclusion is near, imo.

@Big Mike,

Wisconsin is great, but they had an easy schedule, somehow avoiding Ohio St and Penn St and Mich St.

If they best Ohio St next week, yes they should be playoff bound.

I hope the Badgers cream the Buckeyes next weekend and then we'll wait for the committee to make a sound decision based entirely on performance./sarc
