"Hamilton" playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda gives an explanation for why he tweeted "You're going straight to hell, @realDonaldTrump. No long lines for you. Someone will say, 'Right this way, sir.' They'll clear a path."
Is Miranda religious? I tend to think that if you really believe there's a hell and some people are going there you would not purport to speak for God and say who's going there. You would not risk offending God. Miranda's "You're going straight to hell" is particularly high-handed, even purporting to know the bureaucracy of Hell, that there are long lines for some and an express lane for others. That makes it comedy, and it's a kind of comedy made possible, I think, by the belief that there is no hell, and that's why we've got to give the evildoers hell in the here and now.
Speaking of comedy and hell, I was just reading David Grossman's "A Horse Walks into a Bar," which is a novel set in a stand-up comedy show. At one point, the comedian, the main character, says:
"Have you heard the one about the guys who die and get to the induction center in the sky, and they sort them into heaven or... hell? No, seriously, isn’t that the greatest fear—that in the end it’ll turn out the rabbis were right? That hell is a for-real place?... Listen, guys, I’m talking all-inclusive hell, the whole shebang, with fire, and devils with horns, and those little rakes, the pitchforks, and the wheel of torture and boiling tar and all those gadgets Satan gets to use…I haven’t slept a wink just thinking about it these past few months, I swear, and at night it’s the worst, the thoughts just eat me up and I totally get what you’re thinking now: Son of a bitch, why did I have to go and eat those shrimp on that trip to Paris? And the pitas from Abu Gosh on Passover? And why didn’t we all vote for Torah Judaism?” He lowers his voice and booms: “Too late, scumbags—to the tar!”

When did Trump attack the people of Puerto Rico?
Trump defended himself against the leftwing Katrina liars and the silly useless Hillary supporting Mayor - as she stood next to pallets of food -- so what?
The collective left want to treat Trump like they treated Bush, McCain and Romney - "you're a baby killing Nazi..." I appreciate that Trump fights back and doesn't cower into a pool of appeasement.
Sounds like recycling Steve Martin's bit on heaven:
Wouldn't it be weird if you died, and you woke up, and you were in heaven, just like they always told you? And everybody had wings on, and the pearly gates? Wouldn't you feel stupid?
The leftist elites are learning they are not in control and they are lashing out.
Nothing angrier than a progressive that can't tell other people what to and make them do it.
So... Stupid things that Donald Trump has done and said, are provoking more stupid things that are done and said by liberal leaders in popular culture. Got it.
Are you suggesting that Trump is somehow excused by the laughable hysterics and hypocrisies of his left wing critics?
Pat Benatar said Hell was for Children.
Which is kinda depressing, Pat.

@rene
Trump called the dock worker and truck driver unions out for not showing up for work to deliver the relief supplies he had pre-positioned.
Imagine going to hell for the ambiguous wording of a tweet.
What if God "misreads" your tweets? No! Can't happen! God's reading is the true reading. Tough luck if you'd like to say you meant something else or to put some sort of spin on it or to plead about what you really meant or how you thought saying something that way would lead to some greater good. It's God.

Satan has a thing for Broadway musicals. Miranda can room with Andrew Lloyd Webber.
No one is fooled any more. Progressives have lost their magic power to lie with impunity, intimidate and bully. Little wonder they have become insane and violent.
"Are you suggesting that Trump is somehow excused by the laughable hysterics and hypocrisies of his left wing critics?"
Nothing to excuse. He is pissing off all of the useless people who pretend they do things that matter.
After you break it all down he is one of the most competent executives we have ever had. If the house and senate republicans had any kind of a soul we would be looking at a solid restoration of the republic by now.
Line Miranda had deleted a supportive tweet early in the week, as per the narrative.
"Is Miranda religious?"
Likely not. Just chock full of liberal values.

And you should since you have no idea what's up ahead. But we have a promise. "But as it is written [Is 64,4], Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him."

Time again for David Frum's great tweet from earlier this year:
"Regular reminder that Donald Trump’s core competency is not dealmaking with powerful counter-parties. It is duping gullible victims."
https://twitter.com/davidfrum/status/845314898276106240?lang=en
In "Damned" a 13 year-old girl dies and is sent to Hell, perhaps accidentally, and has to do telemarketing while she files an appeal; the demons are dethroned gods of defunct religions. I give it a 3/5.
When people Tweet--Fuck Chuck--it is well deserved and appropriate. Might even grant a plenary indulgence.
Lin-Manuel Miranda sounds like someone with fruit in his or her hair.
Racist clown hates President Trump... this is not "Man bites dog" territory.
Poor chuck. The world is just not turning out as he had expected.
No "I told you so!" for him.
At the Gates of Hell they check your ass for tattoos.
"Lin-Manuel Miranda sounds like someone with fruit in his or her hair."
I LOL'ed. I was going to say "he's the Puerto Rican Tennessee Coates" but your visual is better.
Althouse, typo? Who is this talking:
“So, my first funeral…” He laughs and stretches out his thin arms. “Have you heard the one about the guys who die and get to the induction center in the sky, and they sort them into heaven or Netan—I mean hell? No, seriously, isn’t that the greatest fear—that in the end it’ll turn out the rabbis were right? That hell is a for-real place?” The audience snickers
Miranda? A character written by Miranda?
Wow: a world full of clowns that think that "rabbis" believe in Dante's Inferno. In standard Jewish belief, the afterlife is a non-physical place, the rewards and punishments spiritual things that have to do with closeness to God or lack of same - both reflections of the person's life, and all consequences of the fact that the soul is immortal. See Maimonides, Hilchos Teshuvah, Chapter 8, and see what he thinks of the Muslim view of heaven and virgins etc. (ibid paragraph 6) [hint: he thinks they're pathetic.]
"No, seriously, isn't that the greatest fear..." Especially clowns, that they would prefer a world where Hitler gets away with it scot-free, and Mother Theresa goes into the same hole in the ground with him. Sounds great to them? I get that they might feel that it's reality, but who in his right mind would prefer to live in such a world? Do they honestly think that they are like Hitler?
He was commiserating with Chris Hayes, which is practically being in the phantom zone.
Frum has been promising a reign of terror, trump hasn't even jailed a journalist yet.
Trump trolls the Left and they overreact and discredits them.
Agree on the word hysterical.
What I like about Trump is he fights.
I wonder is Trumps fighting the elites a one off, or will it spread to others in the GOPe? He out Alinksky's the Left.
McCain, Romney, and GWB were nice, and did not hit non republicans back, and they got slimed.
Trump is doing a surprisingly good job, much better than I expected. I wish it was better.
>So... Stupid things that Donald Trump has done and said, are provoking more stupid things that are done and said by liberal leaders in
>popular culture. Got it.
>Are you suggesting that Trump is somehow excused by the laughable hysterics and hypocrisies of his left wing critics?
"Regular reminder that Donald Trump’s core competency is not dealmaking with powerful counter-parties. It is duping gullible victims." Huh. Odd that those who voted for him are generally pretty satisfied with what he's been doing. A little less tweeting would be good, annoying that Congress is so unable to get anything done... But basically satisfied. Could be we understood that the alternatives were far worse, and will be happy with what we get.
But continue with great quotes that knock his voters. Good luck getting those voters back.
How did Trump manage to transfer the seventy billion dollar debt load from his failing casinos onto Puerto Rico?
Miranda was delighted when Obama let Oscar Lopez Rivera out of prison. Lopez Rivera had served about half of the 70 years he'd been sentenced for the violent felonies he'd committed in support of FALN, the Marxist-Leninist Puerto Rican terrorist organization.
I wonder how Miranda thinks the island would be doing right now if FALN had been successful in the 1970s.
If Lin-Manuel Miranda actually cared about Puerto Rico, wouldn't he be down there himself, helping distribute food, water, and other critical supplies? It's easy to stand to one side and be a critic. And even there, he can't find anything to complain about Trump's actions, just his words.
I think the Puerto Rican politicians should get independence. We need another Venezuela for the failed actors to move to when they are fed up with Trump.
Are you suggesting that Trump is somehow excused by the laughable hysterics and hypocrisies of his left wing critics?
@Chuck, yes we are. Get with the program sonny.

Whoa! Thanks for pointing that out. That's part of the Grossman quote that I thought I'd edited out. I must have parked that in the post while editing and then not seen it when I published.
I've removed it.
That's just the part of the Grossman book right before the part I block-and-indent quoted.
Sorry for the confusion!

Anyway, in this case I don't even understand the attempted lefty meme. What did Trump say about or against the people of PR? Nothing, as far as I can tell. Even by prog standards, the Miranda overreaction is absurd, a crude attempt at Katrinizing the PR fiasco. Independence cannot come soon enough. Cut'm loose.
We should grant PR its independence. Whether it wants it or not.

I did. I wanted an Associate Justice like Gorsuch, and not like Sotomayor or Kagan. I wanted a Secretary of Education like Besty DeVos. So I am not completely unhappy. The funny thing is that I would bet anything that neither Neil Gorsuch nor Betsy DeVos ever voted for Trump in a primary. With DeVos, it isn't much of a guess. She actively supported other Republicans, until she had no other choice.
PR is just Detriot writ large. The main reason why Hurricane Maria has wrought such destruction there is not the wind or the rain or the surging tides — it's the ruling regime which has accumulated $120 billion dollars in debt, $50 billion in pension liabilities alone. Puerto Rico has already defaulted on $58 million in emergency loans, loans guaranteed by the American taxpayer, the workaday stiff whose voice has not been heard in this Republic for a very long time. The incompetence, the mismanagement, and — let us not mince words — the monumental corruption that created that debt has origins and consequences. The origin is pretty simple — greed. PR is not a dictatorship. The cupidity did not emanate from some comic caudillo who collected Rolls Royce limousines, it came from the voters who voted for the "free stuff" party time after time. Free stuff purchased at the expense of the due diligence a Caribbean Island must do to avoid disaster, i.e. storm preparedness.
Hell is getting what you deserve. So is government in a democracy.

We hear what we want to hear. Carmen Miranda wants to hear Trump say bad things so he does. I checked around to see what Trump may have said and most of the headlines I could find made fun of Trump's Spanish accent pronouncing Puerto Rico earth-shattering in its importance!
This from an interview on NPR with the Homeland Security guy in charge: There's over 17,000 federal workers. That's FEMA, Department of Defense and you name what other department or agency across the central government. There's 17,000 folks down in the islands. (my emphasis) We've made contact with every community. Of all the hospitals down there, there are 15 that are back on the grid; 50 are on generator power. One of them is off the grid. It closed - or, you know, no generator power. And then for those that are on generator power, we prioritized fuel deliveries. (Just for comparison 17,000 personnel is roughly equivalent to an Army division. Think about the logistics to support just that force with beans, no bullets, transport, and shelter.)
This is probably the most complete analysis of the failure of Puerto Rican truck drivers that Trump mentioned. My Spanish is inadequate, but there's enough English here to make it clear that the people of Puerto Rico weren't happy with the truck drivers either.
This the guy that wrote a play with 'people of color' playing white guys but its totally not 'cultural appropriation, yes?

I must admit that, though I am a scientifically oriented person with a great love of physics, I still have a fear of dying that amounts to a belief in the possibility of hell.
Of course that means that I am forced to reinterpret what might happen when we die in terms that are at least not inconsistent with everything we know about the brain. Suppose, for example, that pleasure and pain, which we normally think of as being separate and independent experiences, are in fact correlative phenomena like the two sides of a coin, and that by their very nature they have to balance out in the end the way a capacitor discharges its potential when you break it apart? The brain is an electro-chemical organ after all. And there is no question that it stores up the potential for all kinds of extreme emotional experience -- as for example when news of the death of a loved one triggers the most awful horror and grief.
As the brain disintegrates, maybe all unpaid balances are discharged in a flash, in a moment so intense that it can counterbalance a lifetime of ordinary experience? Such a moment of justice, if we can call it that, may not last for a literal eternity, but close enough for government purposes.
From Fr Dwight Longenecker, "Is Hugh Hefner in Hell?":
Saint Faustina had a private vision in which every soul, and the point of death, saw the merciful Christ who asked three times, “Do you love me?” and only the souls who refused his love three times would depart into the dark.
If I could make my enemies roll in their own excrement merely by sending something so utterly ephemeral as a tweet, by God, I'd do it twenty times a day!
Trump should be celebrated for his Brobdingnagian restraint.
It's been a long time since I read "The Great Divorce" by C.S. Lewis but if I remember correctly those in Hell were there because they chose to be there - even after death.
That might seem absurd, just as I found the Exodus story puzzling when I was a child. The Lord kept sending all those plagues on Egypt and yet the Pharaoh didn't wise up and say after the first one "I was wrong, Moses. You and yours may leave." The Pharaoh was quite a dunce, I concluded.
Now it not only makes sense to me, it's a great commentary on human nature and the behavior of those in power. Look at the plagues being visited on the Western world right now. The response of most leaders is to double and triple down on stupid. Merkel and Co. would drive us all right over a globalist cliff rather than admitting they are wrong. No matter how many terrorist attacks they suffer, the response is always the same: we need to be nicer to Muslims.
There was a reason Pride was considered the worst of the 7 Deadly Sins and the father of all the others.

@exiledonmainstreet That's right. The door to Hell is locked from the inside. Words to that effect.
The US Episcopal Church ran the FALN as a joint venture with Castro and the KGB. This is the precise truth.
That tells you what place the US powers that be were back in the 1970s-early 80's. That the pro-communist US urban guerillas of all these factions were extremely well connected explains why they were, with just a few token exceptions, permitted to fade back into the establishment with no consequences.
Lin Manuel Miranda is a very typical protege-propagandist of that group of interests. There seems to be a set of required shared tribal rites, and last year his stage show was added to the suite. I suspect it was to replace Enslers' "Vagina Monologues", which is no longer au courant.
"Robert Cook believes in an evil system that will kill millions, again."
Have I ever said I support the American war machine, or Trump's threat to obliterate North Korea?
There was an early Church father--Tertullian, I think--who posited that one of the chief joys among the elect in Heaven is watching the sufferings of the damned. He wrote in a time before cable, much less streaming, but his point still holds. One of the joys of heaven has to be the contemplation that your existence is so much more blessed and cherished than the existence of Them. On the the other hand, if there are any gradations in Heaven, that would be bound to cause envy and discomfit among the elect. There's so much about humanity that's not equipped to endure Heaven and so eager to create Hell.........My own belief is that we pass into silence and nothingness. The end of all this noise is Paradise enough. Not the best of all eternities, but far from the worst.
I didn't get the episvopalian church angle, riverside and the NYC?
Miranda echoes a familiar liberal line: "Under normal circumstances I would be too civil and cultured to say the vulgar and hateful thing I am about to say, but this is a unique circumstance because:
a)This could be the most important election of our lifetime;
b)Ronald Reagan is a dangerous extremist who could lead us into nuclear war;
c)George W. Bush is an idot and dangerous extremist who could lead us to disaster;
d)John McCain is an unbalanced ("Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran")maverick (He picked Sarah Palin!!!), who could lead us into disaster;
e) Mitt Romeny is a High School bullying, dog on top of the care leaving, Bain Capital running Hitler clone who dcould elad us into disaster;
f) Trump, oh my God, Trump! He's an idiot who only became a billionaire because his father lent him $15 million, but he's not a real estate mogul but a former reality TV star, but he went bankrupt, and he grabs women by the pussy and sucks Putin's cock, and OH MY GOD, TRUMP!!!"

About the closest thing to that which I've heard of is, e.g.,
Could a final surge in brain activity after death explain near-death experiences?"
IOW, nothing amazing.
Speaking of consciousness, you might enjoy Dennett, this TED talk was quite interesting:
"Philosopher Dan Dennett makes a compelling argument that not only don't we understand our own consciousness, but that half the time our brains are actively fooling us."
I would bet anything that neither Neil Gorsuch nor Betsy DeVos ever voted for Trump in a primary. With DeVos, it isn't much of a guess. She actively supported other Republicans, until she had no other choice.
A lot of us are that same way. The difference is that we don;t constantly bitch about him while he is doing a pretty good job.
Trump was calling out the lefty mayor of San Juan who refused to meet with FEMA and claimed nothing was being done while supplies piled up on the docks, and he called out the labor unions for being on strike while people needed supplies. How is that "the people" of PR? In the mind of the left, the politicians and union leaders ARE the people, even more people than real people I guess.
Miranda is a Lefty radical, or, at least, has sympathies very much in that direction:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/theater/ct-hamilton-miranda-chicago-ent-0615-20170614-column.html
I don't know about Trump going straight to Hell, but I do know that I'm giving Miranda an all expenses aid invitation to come straight to me and kiss my A##. And there is a lot to criticize about Puerto Rico and its government. And just because Miranda thinks of them as homies, that doesn't mean they are exempt from legitimate criticism.
"I haven't trusted Puerto Ricans since West Side Story."
The most implausible scene in movie history occurs in Westside Story.
Tony goes into a Puerto Rican neighborhood of New York in the 1950's, yells "Maria" and only one woman comes to her window.
Is Miranda religious? I think it's safe to say he's a dues-paying member of the Cult of the State.
So I suppose anyone who voted for Donald J. Trump is going 'straight to hell, no lines' right? Hell, I wouldn't even mind as any afterlife is better than non-existence. Besides I'm sure I can find a way to get out of hell after a few centuries.
Quoting Al Pacino
A hell exists on earth? Yes. I won't live in it. That's me.
I subscribe to that notion. The best revenge against the left who want to create a hell on earth is to LIVE WELL.
Trump calling out the shrieking, hyper-partisan Mayor of T-Shirts R Us = attacking the victims of a natural disaster?
Sure.
Spot on, sparky.
Speaking of Heaven and Hell: Do you remember the writer Stephen Vincent Benet (1898-1943)? He's best known, I think, for his epic poem about the Civil War, "John Brown's Body", but among his many short stories is "Doc Mellhorn and the Pearly Gates". Doc Mellhorn is a small town doctor, and when he dies and finds himslf in Heaven he's distressed, because nobody in Heaven needs a doctor. So he volunteers to go to Hell. There's more to it, and you can read it at http://gutenbergcanada.ca/ebooks/benetsv-midnight06-docmellhorn/benetsv-midnight06-docmellhorn-00-h-dir/benetsv-midnight06-docmellhorn-00-h.html
Of course he would pick a city that WA target of a hams attack,
Miranda celebrates unrepentant murderous terrorists but wants to lecture the rest of us about morality.
Miranda shows his racist and racialist beliefs at every turn but now whines and begs for help...presumably from the same white people he normally insults.
The first time I saw this slimy fucker was on John Oliver's show where he was whining and crying as he begged for help for "his people" in the form of relief from the huge debt PR has incurred over decades of mismanaged and corruption. He insisted that how they ran up that bill wasn't important to think about "right now," since real people were hurting . He cried that I have some personal responsibility for helping those poor Puerto Ricans...I guess cause I am a white guy and PRs can't take care of themselves. Pretty racist if you ask me. Oliver's position was that it was our fault that banks loaned PR money--we should have known better than to treat PRs like adults and not irresponsible children.
Anyway all I have seen of this Miranda bitch is him either begging for help or taking a standard-Leftist line that non-Left (white) Americans are horrible, deplorable people. People who have some moral duty to "help his people" of course.
No sale.
Where are all the snarky political cartoons contrasting PR's repeated calls for independence with their calls for help now? That was a thing when it was Texas, right? Weird that no one is saying the same thing now.
Miranda: "You're going to Hell."
Trump: "Nah, I'm going to be just fine."

IMAO, there's a far worse plane in hell for people like the San Juan Mayor who decided to launch a dishonest political attack using the bodies of "her" constituents (in an attempt to cover up the effects of her corruption and incompetence), than their is for people who strike back at scum like the Mayor.
You don't want to get hit? Don't lash out first.
