2 big problems with "taking a knee" as the new standard form of protest.

1. It's sexist. See the problem:

If you wear a skirt (other than a very long skirt), you can't go down on one knee without creating an upskirt view. It's interesting to me to see that photograph taken with the woman in the short skirt in the most prominent position. She's not in the taking-a-knee position, because she's down on both knees, for the obvious reason. But I don't know how she managed to get into that position without exposing whatever she's wearing under the skirt. Maybe she prepared and — like a figure skater — donned some sort of exposable undershorts. I'm thinking of something like this, but even then, people are going to think it's not intended to be exposed. I'd hate to find myself in some sort of work event — as a lawprof, I usually wore an above-the-knee skirt — and expected to go along with a group activity that put pressure on me to expose myself. It's a disparate burden with an element of sexual harassment.

2. It's ageist and ableist. Look at Sheila Jackson Lee taking the knee at the end of a House speech on the subject of the First Amendment:

She's an older woman — 67 — and I don't know about her health, but it's a long way down for her, and the last 6 inches or so are more of a fall. And to get back up, she pulls on the lectern. It's one thing for professional athletes to go down on one knee, hold the position, and then get back up, but many people are not able to do it easily, gracefully, or without pain. Many cannot do it at all. It's just not an inclusive gesture. Here is this trending expressive activity some people might want to be part of, and they are forced to think about their own physical limitations, which they might feel bad about, but nobody is paying attention to. They may think: Why don't they care about me? Why are they making me expose my weakness?

Looks like soon you will be able to add ESPN to that trophy wall.

The CEO of Dish is now saying it is now possible to consider dropping ESPN from the package, something that was unthinkable just 5 years ago.

You know how these conversations are going:

Customer: I like to drop ESPN.

Rep: Sorry, but that's not possible due to bundling.

Customer: Well, then I'll cancel Dish

Rep: Uh, hang on, let me talk to my boss....

Too bad for them the English and French have absolutely no interest in American football.

As I said yesterday, of the Big 4 (Football, Baseball, Basketball and Hockey), football has the least appeal outside our borders. Yet another reason why this response by the NFL is so incredibly stupid.

Not even worth an easy cost-free hollow gesture. I wonder why that real tragedy is so unimportant, and the rare arguable police abuse is front and center. One of the latest proposed and more effective financial hits that could happen to the NFL, NBA etc is that some Cable and Satellite companies are considering dropping ESPN as a core component of their basic packages.

As it is now, we are forced to pay for ESPN to the tune of $7 to 8 dollars a month whether we want to or not. Making the ESPN option an add on option instead mandatory would be awesome. Actually allowing us to chose ala carte programing might even save the Cable and Satellite companies from the 'chord cutting' trend

Speaking as someone who hasn't watched any sports for years and years on television I would drop ESPN like a hot potato.

Imagine the lost revenue from the hundreds of thousands if not million people who will opt out. Irritate your fan base and then be shocked when they decide they have had enough???

They were protesting a speaker who came to give a speech defending free speech on American campuses. I find that very impressive, a Clown World superlative.

Predictably, they found it "ironic" that a representative of the administration of Trump, who *exercised* his right to free speech in criticizing those NFL players, would criticize the *suppression* of free speech rights on campus.(Clown World "logic" and Clown World "irony" at their finest.)

Naturally, Georgetown SJWs are whining about having their rights (ironically!) violated because they were denied the opportunity to go ape-shit during Sessions' speech and shut it down.

This gets better every day.

Its not a matter of anyone's welfare, this is a purely symbolic matter of tribal politics.
That x lives or dies is not important, its only significant that x is killed by y.

And because it is only about symbols, it does not matter even that there is any improvement in numbers of cases of x getting killed by y. One case works as well as a hundred.

I am sure that, here and there in the great crowds of posers, there are people who give a rat's ass about the blighted lives of young black men. (Not that you'd ever get them to address the huge role of their well-intended prog social programs in contributing to the blight, mind you.) Nonetheless, that must pushed aside in pursuit of a more important matter, which is ensuring that the Two Minute Hate (well, the 24/7/365 Hate) against the White Man be sustained, come hell or high water.

It's worse than that. The entitled millionaires who have just discovered they can use the sideline bench as a political forum are not going to quit, let alone offer up a groveling apology. And even if they could be strong-armed into doing so, their many sympathizers would be outraged by white owners forcing black players to their knees (heh).

If the intent of the NFL had been to split their audience in two, and then arrange that one side or the other, or maybe both, must submit to an intolerable humiliation, I have to say they went about it just right.

Hard Data, Hollow Protests.

"The FBI released its official crime tally for 2016 today, and the data flies in the face of the rhetoric that professional athletes rehearsed in revived Black Lives Matter protests over the weekend. Nearly 900 additional blacks were killed in 2016 compared with 2015, bringing the black homicide-victim total to 7,881. Those 7,881 “black bodies,” in the parlance of Ta-Nehisi Coates, are 1,305 more than the number of white victims (which in this case includes most Hispanics) for the same period, though blacks are only 13 percent of the nation’s population. The increase in black homicide deaths last year comes on top of a previous 900-victim increase between 2014 and 2015.

Who is killing these black victims? Not whites, and not the police, but other blacks. In 2016, the police fatally shot 233 blacks, the vast majority armed and dangerous, according to the Washington Post. The Post categorized only 16 black male victims of police shootings as “unarmed.” That classification masks assaults against officers and violent resistance to arrest. Contrary to the Black Lives Matter narrative, the police have much more to fear from black males than black males have to fear from the police. In 2015, a police officer was 18.5 times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male was to be killed by a police officer. Black males have made up 42 percent of all cop-killers over the last decade, though they are only 6 percent of the population. That 18.5 ratio undoubtedly worsened in 2016, in light of the 53 percent increase in gun murders of officers—committed vastly and disproportionately by black males. Among all homicide suspects whose race was known, white killers of blacks numbered only 243. "

Standard Althouse commentariat move: get called out for being verifiably wrong about something, immediately pivot away, refuse to try to get the discussion more precise, and throw out a non sequitur. This is a classic example.

Let me help you: There was a discussion about the pragmatics of the NFL's responses to the protests. Someone suggested that this was connected to their move to stage games abroad. I was probably the first American football player ever interviewed on English television. Back in the 80's (81? 82?) my high school football team was featured on a TV show called Swap Shop. we played a fake scrimmage and I was interviewed by one of the hosts.

What's he going to do when he blows out his knee? I guess live off the dividends. Hopefully he encourages others to do better, if not by example.

But it's nice that he apparently behaves nicely. I won't ask how many illegitimate children he has because who would know? In any case if you have enough money I suppose you're entitled to establish a troop of little bastards. But I don't really care one way or the other.

While I don't care about anyone or anything in basketball, I think that if you're conceding that it's not a slam dunk that he graduated high school, Dr. K is probably safe from accusations of slander or libel.

In any case, as seen with this maniac West Pointer who seems to believe and hope that quote-unquote communism will win, education is no guarantee of allegiance to this country, or a good understanding of the world generally.

On football in Europe, there are people who will come and see anything with Americans in it. They had a game. One game. Maybe they had a second game? Two games? That would probably accommodate all the novelty seekers. I am somewhat confident that American football isn't going to be the next big thing over there, and I would be surprised if that's the NBA's plan.

From my limited experience, I agree. But, for what it is worth, there is way, way, way more American football on British television now than there was even 10 years ago. It is night-and-day. And there are sold-out NFL games there, on the regular. None of these things were true even in 2000. So, while I have no idea there is anything like the support needed for expansion, etc., clearly things are different than they were in the past.

That said, your experience sounds fantastic! I bet there were some ridiculous questions asked.

Daniel Jackson said...

The UK is not interested in American Football, as it is called in Europe. Football is what Americans call soccer.

But, the real issue is that when the weekend warriors want to play rough and tough, they play what the world calls Rugby. More people in the world watch the Rugby World Cup than any game fielded by the NFL. Rugby is a tougher game mentally as well as physically and it MOVES from start to finish.

UK is Rugby country and Rugby players, in general, think the American Lads who play American Football are pussies (sissies, really) for wearing all that armor, grunting, and huffing and puffing about for eleven minutes out of three hours.

He was visiting during his junior year and mentioned that he was being contacted by NBA teams and was thinking of entering the draft. I told him that I would love to tell him to stay in school and finish, then to enter the draft, but to be honest if he signed a contract with any NBA team he would make more money than I was going to make my whole life. He could always go back to school. He ended up signing with Chicago the year after they finally broke up Jordan's last team...they had at least a half dozen rookies on the team. he lasted three years and then spent the rest of his career playing professional basketball overseas.

The European baseball leagues are still very small, but now that they have realized you have to start with kids, a French shortshop has become the first female player signed by mlb (and she still might not ever make it to the bigs.)

Getting children to play football is becoming more problematic in the States because soccer moms don't want their sons to risk head injuries. Do you think British parents will welcome the chance to have their boys risk concussions?

Exiled,

"I actually know something, Craig, about the efforts made by mlb to expand baseball into Europe." No offense, but I'm not buying it. What do you know about it? Were you there for the meetings? Did you participate in the loss assessment calculations? Or were you some baloney fan who read sports illustrated at the time.

I don't care about when you start thinking the NFL's expansion moves are more than a gimmick. You're a rando on the Internet. You have no more credibility than the rest of us have. You can toss bullshit around, like you did in your comment, just like the rest of us. Maybe you "actually know something," but I seriously doubt it.

How about problem number 3 for the latest protest fad - kneeling is more commonly associated with an act of submission, prayer, reverence, or worship. The genuine sign of disrespect when etiquette calls for standing is to sit or turn one's back (for example, the police protests of De Blasio) - kneeling is usually a greater reverence than standing is, which is obvious if the flag is replaced with the Queen, the Pope, or any other object of reverence.

Dear Craig,

Respectfully, you talk big, and to a degree cogently, but Mike is a known entity and a respectable participant on this blog, and your quality, sir, is unknown to me. I don't like your tone.

In the modern parlance, I am not the boss of you, but a sensible man would consider whether he intended that or not, consider the source naturally, and alter his approach accordingly.

This advice is free, and worth every penny. "You can tell a Harvard Man, but you can't tell him much."

De Blasio is a nonsense. I wish some Trump aligned Republican superstar existed and would run here against him. I would go door-to-door and hand out flyers for that guy. Sadly I don't even know who's running. I assume it will be red Wilhelm in a lock. Truly these are terrible times. Definitely interesting ones.

Jon, I hadn't noted TTR on the thread at all.

Right back at ya, Craig.

The reason I say I know something is that I'm pretty familiar with the history of baseball, including it's largely fruitless efforts to expand its' popularity in Europe. Again, does it make sense that European parents with athletic children would urge them to take up American football given what we are learning about CTE?

Bad, I must have imagined it.

I thought maybe you were implying that Ritmo had changed identities again and was now this character Craig.
