NYT headline offers Trump a measure of praise.

"Protesters Flood Streets, and Trump Offers a Measure of Praise."

Here's the part of the article about Trump:
President Trump, who has faced unyielding — and bipartisan — criticism after saying that there was “blame on both sides” in Charlottesville, tweeted Saturday that he wanted “to applaud the many protestors in Boston who are speaking out against bigotry and hate. Our country will soon come together as one!”

He also wrote: “Our great country has been divided for decades. Sometimes you need protest in order to heal, & we will heal, & be stronger than ever before!”

It was an abrupt shift in tone. The president posted earlier Saturday that it appeared there were “many anti-police agitators in Boston.”
Nothing in the Times about Trump's need to delete and retweet after misspelling "heal" as "heel," a topic of mirth in the lesser New York paper, The Daily News, where the headline is "Trump roasted over pair of tweets saying country must ‘heel.'"

That's not just a nonsense misspelling like covfefe. "Heel" has meaning, as a tweeter named @dexter_doggie barked: “Donald Trump intends to bring you to heel."

It would be better for the NYT to do actual reporting rather than simply reading President Trump tweets and pushing a Leftwing narrative.

Scott Adams proposes a cabinet position of tears, for the wanted emotional response to this or that leftist crying point.

I don't like bashing the KKK or nazis rather than this or that that they say. It's uninsightful and will produce what it claims to hate. So Trump shouldn't do it either.

Charlottesville was a two day event for the "hate groups" and the first day and evening went off without any trouble as evidenced by the videos of the Tiki-torch parade. The violence did not start until the second day when the "antifas" arrived in force.
So, no, the blame was not equal between the contending factions.

The MSM does not seem to understand that by publishing the videos they undercut their own story.

I have not seen so much about Boston, but my understanding is that the "hategroups" again was totally overwhelmed by the numbers of "anti-protest" protestors. It seems to me that again there are more reasons for worrying about the intentions of the "good" protestors than the "bad" ones. There seems to be more of them and better armed.

Merriam-Webster had a snark tweet defining the words "heal" and "heel". They used the noun version of heel, though. Extra snark, I guess. The verb is much more interesting as a Freudian slip.

No trouble?! They were chanting "Jews will not replace us". When they arrived on campus they surrounded and threatened a group of students who had gathered peacefully around the Thomas Jefferson statue.

The entire goal of the protestors in Charlottesville was to provoke a confrontation. Instead of coordinating with the police they deliberately made an end run around the police so they could directly confront the counter protestors. To pretend they weren't looking for a fight is just ridiculous.

It seems unlikely but you never know with actions. You can't diagram them.

Rephrasing them later is often called for.

Move the subjects around, but the verbs in better places.

From the New Yorker:

Trump Says Sun Equally to Blame for Blocking Moon

Attacking the media for its “very unfair” coverage of Monday’s solar eclipse, Donald J. Trump said on Saturday that the sun was equally to blame for blocking the moon.

“The fake news is covering the eclipse from the sun’s side instead of the moon’s side, but if you look at it from the moon’s side the sun is blocking the moon’s side,” he said. “There are so many sides you can’t count all the sides.”

Additionally, Trump tore into the sun itself, calling it a “showboat” for its role in the solar eclipse. “The sun thinks the world revolves around it,” Trump said. “Sad.”

Trump said the sun was a “big problem” that his predecessor, Barack Obama, did nothing to solve, but that that situation was about to change.

“It will be handled — we handle everything,” Trump said, adding that a pre-ëmptive military strike on the sun was “very much on the table.”

The "semi-automatic weapons+ were brought by militias which did not participate in the riot.

OZONE!!!

You do know that the ozone hole was a real thing and that through the Montreal Protocol, the world, led by the U.S., Canada and Europe, got together and solved the problem?

************************

Odd that you would think the "ozone hole" was a man-made phenomenon , or that it has disappeared:

Here's a dose of reality:

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2015/10/29/ozone-hole-worse-than-in-recent-years-due-to-colder-than-normal-stratosphere-in-antarctica/

"The 2015 Antarctic ozone hole area was larger and formed later than in recent years, said scientists from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

On Oct. 2, 2015, the ozone hole expanded to its peak of 28.2 million square kilometers (10.9 million square miles), an area larger than the continent of North America. Throughout October, the hole remained large and set many area daily records. Unusually cold temperature and weak dynamics in the Antarctic stratosphere this year resulted in this larger ozone hole. In comparison, last year the ozone hole peaked at 24.1 million square kilometers (9.3 million square miles) on Sept. 11, 2014. Compared to the 1991-2014 period, the 2015 ozone hole average area was the fourth largest."

And this:

https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/arctic%E2%80%99s-first-ozone-hole

"So why is it that this past spring, scientists observed the largest, most severe ozone destruction ever witnessed in the Arctic since records began in 1978? In part, it’s because CFCs stick around in the atmosphere for a very long time. But the maps below reveal the main reason this winter’s Arctic ozone loss was so much worse than it normally is: unusually persistent cold temperatures."

The answer in both cases was "unusually COLD weather". If humans had created and solved the "problem" by ending CFC use, why are those holes still forming???

Could it be that they are a natural phenomena?

Now that DuPont fixed the ozone hole, you latch onto global warming.

Also, you never explained why you thought that increasing particulate matter would have been a good thing or why your conflation of two different environmental problems makes science less important than your politics for addressing those impacts.

Quit lying and explain your positions, not your emotions or politics. We can already see through those.

That's what I call ignorant.

Perhaps you should spend less time spewing shit here and more time reading books. Might I recommend Shirer's "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich?" I believe Althouse read it a few years back. Also some good Civil War histories: Bruce Catton's books and Shelby Foote's Civil War trilogy, which gives a Southern perspective. Eugene Genovese's studies of slavery and the antebellum South are also excellent, particularly "Roll, Jordan, Roll: The World the Slaves Made."

More reading and less frothing at the mouth over things you know very little about would make you a more thoughtful and interesting commenter.

chickelit said...

Althouse wants her comment section to be as bipartisan as a courtroom. There should be two sides to every dispute and each should equally argued and heard. This model has two obvious problems:

1) arguments here are often made by non professionals arguing in good faith. They often wind up with hurt feelings.

2) Althouse is a poor courtroom "judge" and doesn't have the tools to maintain "order in the court."

AGW deniers seem to have this obsession with thinking they found or did not find something in the original data that undercuts the entire conclusion!

At last something I know something about! Climate science intersects my checkered career in two places. In both places climate science is wrong. What's proved is that climate science no adult peer review. They don't know what they claim to know.

The points are:

1. You can't solve the Navier Stokes equations, which govern the atmosphere. (In three dimensions, flows cascade to smaller and smaller scale flows, so no grid resolution is adequate. But you need small scale flows because they act as a sort of ersatz viscosity back on large scale flows.) Climate science solves them nevertheless by substituting and "effectuive viscosity" for what they can't compute. This isn't physics. It would not pass a serious peer review. You haven't modeled the atmosphere as you claim.

2. Trend vs cycle. You can't distinguish a trend from a long cycle with data short compared to the long cycle. (The eigenvalues of the distinguishing matrix explode, making the data useless for the purpose. This can be easily verified by any engineering graduate student. In fact he will discover it in the process of coding up a test. Hey wait a minute, these are all essentially linearly dependent to the accuracy of the machine.) So natural cycles and trends can't be distinguished.

This was back in the early 2000s and it hasn't changed. They don't know what they claim to know, is the result. That's what climate denial is.

The sociology of science accounts for it all. Look at motivations.

It wasn't Trump, it was the Democratic governor of Virginia and mayor of Charlottesville - and of course the media - EP is half right. Five weeks before last Saturday, the Klan came to Charlottesville to protest in front of a Stonewall Jackson statue at another park in town. The police did their job and kept them separated from the much more numerous counterprotestors. Result: 22 arrests, all (I'm pretty sure) counterprotestors shoving the police or throwing rocks and bottles at them and the Klansmen, 3 hospitalized (2 for heat exhaustion, 1 for excessive drunkenness), no serious injuries. Other result: Very few people heard about that rally, and I only knew about it because I'm 35 miles away.

It looks to me like the governor and mayor wanted a repeat, with violence and national headlines, so they and their friends encouraged a much larger turnout the next time around and they ordered the police not to do what the police should have been doing. It worked, too: one death, lots of critical and serious injuries, and lots of juicy headlines, none of which would have happened if the police had been allowed to do their job. The governor also lied about it afterwards, saying the police were outgunned, and that numerous Nazi weapons caches had been found in the area. The police have publicly stated that they were not outgunned and that no caches were found. Why the governor of Virginia is not currently facing indictment and impeachment for such inflammatory bald-faced lies, I do not know.

I know you think blacks are too stupid to provide ID at the polls, Ritmo.

This is your straw man and racist insult of the day? Lot's of people don't have state ID, lot's of people don't drive, Mike Turzai admitted that the effort is all political, there is no credible data of fraudulent voting in numbers close enough to affect elections, Trump has close associates registered in two states, most fraudulent voting in 2016 were Trump voters trying to prove that they could get away with it.

I put it that physicists are united by a common set of equations, and climate scientists are united by a common set of predictions.

A sociology remark.

Color supremacy, and, to a lesser extent, color blocs, polarize populations.

Color diversity, and class (e.g. sex, "=") diversity, generally, denies individual dignity.

Selective-child (i.e. Pro-Choice/abortion) denies wholly innocent human lives deemed unworthy, inconvenient, or profitable (e.g. Planned Parenthood's clinical cannibalism operation).

Progressive liberals engage in both National Socialist practices.

It's ironic that progressive liberals resumed selective-child in abortion chambers under the same legal jurisdiction as National Socialists carried out their brand of social justice (e.g. the "Jews" have too much) under a layer of privacy.

Left vs Left. Hopefully, the Left will lose.

Cohen and Bray discuss Antifa.

Bray thinks leftists need to preemptively attack people they disagree with... err neo-Nazis... This is mainstream democrat thought now.

“I think it’s a spectacularly bad idea,” Cohen argued, “to give one group the right to silence another group of people. It’s contrary to our values embodied in the First Amendment.”

Most Americans agree with Cohen. Democrats are going to lose elections badly.

Also don't think the American people haven't noticed that the Russians have disappeared and the Nazis took their place.

These people are traitors and enemies of freedom.

None of which have convinced them that atmosphere has no impact on climate, but the opposite.

Toothless, not knowing what the Horst Wessel song is like not knowing Ca Ira.

I imagine that you are as ignorant of the French Revolution as you are of the Nazi era.

Which is why I suppose I got no reaction from you when I said you remind me of Marat without any political power. Because Marat was a resentful ball of hate whose biggest gripe was not really about the injustices committed against poor people, but the injustice of people not recognizing what a great genius he was. One reason they did not is because he was a nasty asshole. He murdered thousands once he was in a position to do so.

You probably didn't react because you don't know who Marat was.
