This is your mainstream media on drugs.

Any questions?

The deplorable Washington Post video of children singing Trump tweets made me think — because those kids seem to be enjoying Trump's tweetstylings — of how anti-drug ads end up selling drugs. With the notorious CNN logo video in mind, I asked if someone could stick the Washington Post logo onto the egg yolk in the old "This is your brain on drugs" ad. And Tobias did it!

I always wondered how the "drugs are bad" managed to sell more drugs, but it took until late 2000s for being an RPG enthusiast not to be a social stigma.

We were satanists in the 90s! SATANISTS! THAT SHOULD'VE MADE US COOL!

Very impressive, but it makes the whole CNN logo kerfluffle so ridiculous. What an overreaction. As if, literally, anybody couldn't do this. Some little innocent petunia could have done this. Somebody who meant that Trump was mean could have done this. What could CNN have hoped by doxxing but to give the Creator fame, or at least notoriety? Too bad it wasn't Sabo, his fortune would be made. He'd be on every damn talk show.

That is awesome.

I think the corner has been turned. Trump has destroyed the ability of the media to mislead the country.

This is when I expect serious attempts to kill the president.

It should be known that if President Trump is assassinated at any point, it doesn't matter who does it or how it was done, we are going to make sure you regret he died.

Ted Cruz and Althouse for your litigators, Tobias. Laslo will report the trial. The rest of us will try to bud off new lawsuits as we hear the settlement in favor of Tobias is in the millions. The commenters on other side can swear they were offended and the rest of us can all swear on their behalf that we are certain they were offended. Then split the proceeds

Oh, that's pretty clever! You guys are right on the cutting edge - of 1985!

Before we knew that cannabis decreased prescription opioid overdose deaths (without causing a single death of its own), that mass incarceration of nonviolent offenders did nothing but decimate the black community and that the government has no compelling interest treating the medical problem of addiction as a crime.

You bring it! It's 1985 all over again!

Make America incorrect again!

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

That sounds like Kevin Bacon doing the voiceover (can anyone confirm?). Which would be ironic with a fried egg.

It took me decades to realize that this Nancy Reagan campaign just confirmed her as an ignorant, moralizing liar - but that's the power of the government for you. Also, the campaign didn't work. And NIDA is full of shit.

Nowadays the issue is how Republicans are going to keep their red state RX opioid addicts from lethally overdosing themselves. Most of them have made weed available, which seems to work. It's probably not the only approach (and with Cracker Sessions, won't even be allowed); but ironic enough that it does.

The other thing would be to take on pharma's anti-regulatory heyday. But fat chance of that happening with the current Residential Administration. Except when it comes to vaccines, of course.

It's like there's almost nothing he gets right. Even when he's on the wrong side of an issue he crosses over to be wrong once again on the one part of it where he would be right.

That wont be enough. There are globalists with billions of dollars on the line. Bezos didn't buy the WAPO just to have it rendered worthless by Trump. Carlos Slim didn't buy the NYT so Trump could build a wall and renegotiate NAFTA.

There is a Scifi book called Snowcrash. It was scifi when it was written. Anyhow one of the bad guys stole a nuclear warhead and wired it to his brainwaves. If he died the bomb went off. He was a really evil person but everyone tried to keep him alive for obvious reasons. It should be known that if something bad happens to Trump it means hell.

People try to play Hinkley off as a nut. That is Bullshit. He might have been a nut but there is no way he gets that close without help. God intervened. How would history have been different had that succeeded? You know the same people who wanted Reagan dead want Trump dead.

Be ready for it.

There has been no bigger advocate for Western Civilization, its history, its accomplishments and what it offers for the future than you.

Today, Trump, despite all that has been said about him and even all that is true about him personally, gave a speech that was the strongest statement about the value of Western Civilization and its proper place and how it must be defended.

I would have expected at least a passing, even grudging, statement from you that it was the right thing to do and a noble effort.

I would have expected at least a passing, even grudging, statement from you that it was the right thing to do and a noble effort.

Hey, man. Well, thanks. But anyone can talk the talk.

I'll do you one better, in fact. I don't have any problem with pushing for greater European funding of NATO or other Western allied defenses. That's fine. If he gets that done, great. It's a win. I doubt he will get it done, though - because of how damn off-putting and insulting he is to them and how much he buddies up to their Russian spoilers. And being on the side of European disintegration doesn't help, either. But if he gets them to fund more, great.

As for the rest of it, it does seem to be a lot of talking the talk. I, like Hitchens, see America as not just a part of Western civilization but a logical progression of it. And that starts with the structure of the government and the freedoms spelled out in our Bill of Rights - particularly the first one.

Once he does more to respect an independent judiciary over a "unitary executive" and learning that a free press is not the "enemy of the people" - no matter how much it annoys him, then I'll see him as legitimately in the line of succession of the west and its protection.

As for Russia, he could stand to learn a historical lesson. They've been on the periphery of the west, and rarely at its vanguard. Even under their most powerful rulers (despots) and imperial extensions, they were going internally backward. The country seems destined to stay wedded to its entanglements in the east, and Trump will be well-advised to avoid their course and anything unecessary to do with them diplomatically. But he won't. He's too enamored of power - which is not the province of west. The west has as little to do with worshipping power for its own sake as any great civilization.

I still think he is weakening us. We need to draw others into our orbit - (EXCEPT the Middle East!). Not make enemies of everyone so as to encourage them to create power centers that serve as competing challenges of their own against us.

Did someone just post a YouTube video produced by Alex Jones' henchman as a stab in the eye of "conventional" news?

Right. Alex Jones. The guy who says the Chobani yogurt company harbored tuberculosis, whose wife - while divorcing him - in court documents got him to admit that he was a "performance artist," who believes in chemtrails and thinks the U.S. government is making the frogs gay.

This is the guy who will lead the take-down of CNN. Yep. Sure.

A couple quick responses for TTR.

- Trumps policies will slam the Russians economically. Trump is their worst nightmare.
- the press by and large is the media arm for the Democrats and acts as cheerleaders for the "hey hey ho ho Western Civ has got to go" groups on the left.
- "independent" judiciary is off the table as evidenced by the non sensical rulings coming from leftist jurists which explicitly ignored the law because "Trump". Sorry, but leftists don't get to rewrite the laws because they don't like the results of elections and they sure the hell aren't above criticism for jerking the law around on a whim. And where were you when Obama lectured the Supremes on Citizens United?

A new study found adjustments made to global surface temperature readings by scientists in recent years “are totally inconsistent with published and credible U.S. and other temperature data.”

“Thus, it is impossible to conclude from the three published [global average surface temperature (GAST)] data sets that recent years have been the warmest ever – despite current claims of record setting warming,” according to a study published June 27 by two scientists and a veteran statistician.

The peer-reviewed study tried to validate current surface temperature datasets managed by NASA, NOAA and the UK’s Met Office, all of which make adjustments to raw thermometer readings. Skeptics of man-made global warming have criticized the adjustments.

Reality. Which has a well-known liberal bias.

Your last point is just completely unserious. "Leftist" jurists? How many Scalian weirdos do you need to appoint? Scalia - who changed opinions depending on whether the his ruling's beneficiary was of his party or apart from it. Read Alan Dershowitz's take-down of how partisan he decided the Bush v. Gore case. Sorry if these factual reminders get in the way of your vague rhetoric and demagoguing about courts.

And where were you when Obama lectured the Supremes on Citizens United?

Obama was completely right about that one. The judges have effectively decided that there is no way to define bribery/corruption as a crime at all any more. It's all politics and all fair game, they now say. Obama knew as does the vast majority of America that this means your democracy's completely for sale to the highest bidder. You think he shouldn't have called that out? Sorry, but blaming a judge for a terrorist attack (as Trump does) is a bit more destabilizing to your republic than noting the plain, simple truth that making it impossible to have any anti-bribery/corruption laws in campaign finance mean the system is 100% corruptible. The former invites fear and violence, the latter - reform and civic engagement.

I hear a lot right now about how the right wants to justify the violence they'd like to take out on the left because PROTESTERS! Ask yourself what Trump's tweet does to resolve that. He thrives on fear; it's like crack to the right-wing mind. The big problem with terrorists and Muslims is that we're not fearful enough of them, your side says. This is how republics die.

Doubtful

Evidence doesn't care if you doubt it. Or if it hurts your feelings. It's still evidence.

Weed kills pain. Opioids kill pain. One kills you, too. The other doesn't.

Only an irrational Drug Warrior will deny the rationality of making the obvious conclusion as to why cannabis-permitting states therefore have lower rates of RX opioid deaths.

Rational. Evidenced.

But the right-wing mind saith: "Doubtful!"

You keep standing athwart that history and yell, "Stop!" Full moon. The rest of the world will go on and take little note of your emotionalized, unevidenced objections.

The first thing most people who don't really have a lot of experience need to understand is there are dozens of different genetic strains and they have a wide variety of effects. There are strains that are great for pain and many that are better for other things.

Most of the "medical" benefits you see advertised at pot shops are bullshit. They don't really know what strains they are selling. Growers tend to be a more honest group and if you find a good grower or group you will tend to get better advice. I can identify about a dozen strains but most of the names out there are made up crap. One thing you will learn about dispensaries is they like to sell the same thing under multiple names.

I know a bunch of people who have. I am not a user, just used to be a provider.

Most people use some sort of reality inhibitor. Alcohol Opiods etc. My vice is caffeine. Pot used properly really take the edge off for some of the joes who have anxiety and nightmares.

The old medical system in Washington state was better. The current state controlled "recreational" system is terrible.

I imagine a conservative's understanding of the world must proceed something like that "telephone operator" game that's played in grade school. A process with a high person-to-person signal decay factor. By five word-of-mouth rotations, "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" turns into "Stalin-Mao-Chavez-Socialist-Liberal-Arrogant-Statist." Less predictable enemies-in-waiting all around are probably documented in psych ward patients.

tim in vermont said...

That's funny coming from Toothless, who claims a "more sophisticated understanding" of "supply and demand" that allows Democrats to flood the labor market with cheap foreign workers without depressing wages. An understanding he won't deign to explain for some reason, probably because it involves intensive government surveillance wherever a free market might arise, which is everywhere, and state coercion.

It's like he doesn't understand that once you create a mechanism powerful enough to crush free markets, an unsavory character like, for example, Stalin, is going to maneuver to gain control of it and then everybody is fucked.

tim in vermont said...

Come on, just ask Toothless. Trump's advocacy of energy production and export, like support for fracking and Keystone is putting downward pressure on the price of oil, and we all know, according to Toothless's "sophisticated understanding" of economics, that Putin and his petro-state cronies LUVV cheap oil!

tim in vermont said...

Against individualism, the Fascist conception is for the State; and it is for the individual in so far as he coincides with the State, which is the conscience and universal will of man in his historical existence. It is opposed to classical Liberalism, which arose form the necessity of reacting against absolutism, and which brought its historical purpose to an end when the State was transformed into the conscience and will of the people. Liberalism denied the State in the interests of the particular individual; Fascism reaffirms the State as the true reality of the individual. And if liberty is to be the attribute of the real man, and not of that abstract puppet envisaged by individualistic Liberalism, Fascism is for liberty. And for the only liberty which can be a real thing, the liberty of the State and of the individual within the State. Therefore, for the Fascist, everything is in the State, and nothing human or spiritual exists, much less has value, outside the State. In this sense Fascism is totalitarian, and the Fascist State, the synthesis and unity of all values, interprets, develops and gives strength to the whole life of the people. - Mussolini

I wonder what is here that Toothless utterly rejects? Probably the prose style only.

Not content to dispense with a single or even few straw men, "Sample Commenter" threw out a whole slew of them, and added an extended quote of Mussolini's as a cherry on top, demanding something that sounds like, "Bet you can't disavow that! Bet you can't disavow that!"

Pretty civil behavior there, wouldn't you say, Father Achilles? Nevermind all the "isms" in it, abstract prose, lack of factual detail or reference, and obsessively politicized rhetoric. On the contrary, I don't even bother to have a belief unless I can support it with this quaint little thing called a "fact." There is massive projection in this statement. I challenge you to find me a single argument I made that didn't have a factual basis. I am 20 times more interested in empiricism than rationalism.

I don't care if you or anyone else insults me or not. Unlike the people who hate me, I am not some precious snowflake that melts at an unkind word. Just put a fact into the beliefs you insult me for not holding, is all I ask. Shouldn't be too hard to do.

Yesterday, "Sample Commenter" insisted that plants would go extinct without industrial human carbon emission and that water vapor is spontaneously created from nothing. These are the massively mistaken, hallucinated "observations" that apparently undergird his own anti-AGW view. You can't expect me to take seriously his belief when non-facts that far out of whack and out of order are presented as the reason for his belief. This is not about ego or superiority or anything social. It's about whether or not a madman gets to commandeer a math class, shout, "2 + 2 = 5! 2 + 2 = 5!" and then complain that people aren't responding to him nicely for it.
