Can somebody explain why it is that Trump's stated desire for a "temporary" ban on Muslims entering the United States until "our representatives can figure out what the hell is going on," can possibly be litigated for a year or two? Why won't the "temporary" ban be mooted by the passage of so much time?

I have heard, most unconvincingly, that parts of the Trump Administration's "study" of the immigration problem have been enjoined along with the actual ban. I don't understand that, and don't believe it.

I don't like the federal courts' messing with presidential authority in this area. Legally, I'd like to side with the Trump Administration. But it all seems like such a bullshit pretext from Trump, for such a bullshit executive order.

Liberals made the same arguments to justify immigration reform (e.g. "clean" elective wars and forced refugee crises), and elective abortion rites that normalized an unprecedented violation of human rights and progressed the corruption of scientific enterprise. And the same arguments to address the risks from Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming, but reaching diametrically opposed conclusions.

My comment is it's almost true. What matters is not IQ but good character, and that's available to anybody. Show up for work, do your job, support your wife and kids. It's like the 50s again.

The almost part is outcome-based discrimination tests. The whites do their best, have all the good will in the world, and wind up accused of being racists because blacks fail some test at a higher rate than whites.

Outcome-based tests are fatal if you want good character to matter, or even exist.

rhhardin said...

Outcome-based tests are an example of a structural instability. Things go from bad to worse and take over everything.

Another is federal judges doing immigration policy. The most liberal federal judge in the nation has veto power, and that takes over the entire executive office. A structural instability.

Thomas does not believe, rightly, that guns are conscious entities with abortive wills. He knows its people who wield them and believes that we are capable of enjoying liberty only through a judicious exercise of rights and responsibilities. He also rejects [class] diversity and rather judges people, individuals, by the content of their character (e.g. principled alignment). I'm sure that his rational mind knows that increased scrutiny based on conditions on the ground does not equate with perpetual or progressive restrictions.

The people who normalized selective-child policy, who promote mass immigration reform (e.g. refugee crises), who benefit from democratic leverage and labor arbitrage, and carry out elective wars, should not be permitted to hide the collateral damage caused by their choices, both in America and globally.

Idiotic article.

The right thing is to charge based on marginal cost, not fixed cost, and the postal service charges even more than that requires.

They've got the fixed costs whether Amazon ships or not. Don't charge it to Amazon.

If anything, Amazon is subsidizing first class mail, the reverse of that the idiot reporter claims.

Cersei names Jamie Hand of the Queen. He leaves the Queen's guard and takes control of Casterly Rock and the Lannister family.

Danni takes back her ancestral lands and then launches an attack on King's Landing.

Jamie and Tyrian meet as the respective Hands of the Queen. Tyrian convinces Jamie to kill Cersei. Jamie does so, and then goes to Casterly Rock, marries Brienne and starts raising the next generation of Lannisters.

Bran tells Jon about his heritage. Jon meets with Danni and convinces her he is a Targaryan. Danni gives him her army to defend the wall from the Whitwalkers. Jon fulfills the Azor Ahai prophecy and dies again to save Westeros.

Sansa takes over at Winterfell, and her and Tyrian resume their marriage.

Jorah gets cured, and marries Danni.

Yara gets killed fighting her uncle and Theon takes the salt Throne.

No it's not. People can't significantly improve their personality any more than they can raise their IQ. It's pretty easy to make both worse, tho - all you need is some brain damage.

Black racist falsely claims: "There is, however, a question that those claiming black people are genetically predisposed to have lower IQs than others fail to answer: What, precisely, would we gain from discussing this particular issue?"

The answer is completely obvious: Not incorrectly blaming the problems of blacks on white privilege, institutional racism, structural racism and other forms of witchcraft.

Here's a random question about tractors that maybe some knowledgeable person around here can answer.

So I was stuck following behind a highway dept. tractor doing roadside trimming the other day. It had want I assume was a brush hog or rotary mower mounted on a boom arm that was mounted on the tractors side. I was confused how that operates. I doubt they're powered by the tractor's PTO, and the brush hog didn't seem bulky enough to have a self contained engine, so is it somehow powered by the hydraulics in the boom?

Now, now...he's supposedly over half finished with the sixth book. The first and fifth books both took five years to write. it was supposed to be a trilogy, and now will be seven books. (if, as you say, he survives to finish them)

What is interesting is that since the series has proceeded farther than Martin has, the series and the books will be even more divergent than they were before.

From rhhardin's McWhorter link:

I can see exactly three rationales as to why we must be “honest” about the IQ gap, if it exists. ... The first is that the IQ gap delegitimizes policy devoted to redressing the injustices that black people have suffered. That is, one might argue that because black people are on the average less intelligent than other people, our efforts to give a hand to black children in education and point poor black people to employment opportunities are misguided. Rather, society should accept that a disproportionate number of black people will labor at the bottom of the occupational scale and that in general black people will be underrepresented in the higher echelons of society.... The chances that there will ever be a brutally open, race-based meritocratic consensus of this kind among America’s ruling and chattering classes are roughly nil.

I think McWhorter badly, and uncharitably, mischaracterizes, the argument. It would not delegitimize policy devoted to redressing injustices. Instead, it would delegitimize arguements that all inequality was due to injustices. It would not argue that efforts to give a hand to black children are misguided, we should be giving a hand to all children. We can make a decision, as a society, exactly how we should balance educational resources between those toward the bottom of the IQ scale vs those toward the top. But that can be done independent of race. Likewise, we should work to find all people employment opportunities that make the best use of their IQ, as well at their talents.

Finally, such a policy would explicitly not be a race-based meritocracy. It would just be a meritocracy. Blacks would not be excluded from positions requiring high IQ based on their race. Black, and whites, whose IQ was not sufficient for them to function successfully in certain jobs, would not hold those jobs. Black, and whites, whose IQ was sufficient, would.

However, should the Fat Bastard ever really does eventually write the books, as you say, they will bear no relationship to the TV series.

Frankly I think he (Fat Bastard) should just give up and say he started something that he can't finish and hand it off, officially, to someone else who will continue or conclude the series of books. Let them write it and keep his name on the title. Like Clive Cussler and others have done. Someone else does the work, he slaps his name on the cover and clips coupons.

THE RISE OF THE INTERNET’S ‘DIRTBAG LEFT’ — How a new strain of progressive leftism is using humour, irony, and diaper jokes to push back against the emerging alt-right:

What Michelle Obama—or Canadian writer Jonathan Kay, who recently issued a critique of social media boorishness in a National Post essay—miss in their clarion calls for civility is that, for many, politics isn’t just some academic discussion or reimagining of a collegiate debate club: It’s a battle. It’s about drastically opposed visions of society rubbing against each in open conflict. The reinvigorated left doesn’t want to debate; it wants to disgrace.

The fact is that there are many on the left who don’t want to be civil—who want to mock and joke and hurl ad hominem and be as baseless and vulgar as possible. And why? Well, for one thing, it’s productive (and fun!) to unnerve those in power, and to make them feel uncomfortable in their laziness and privilege. And if it’s acceptable for members of the utterly powerless online liberal #Resistance to tweet at Donald Trump calling him a “Cheeto” or a “carrot” as if he’ll miraculously resign when he’s read it for the 17-millionth time, why is it not also valid to needle more immediate villains with harsher, more pointed criticisms?

These tactics will likely present a problem for some. The valuing of vulgarity and snarky hostility (“so much for the tolerant left!”) may scan as cannibalization and in-fighting among those with loosely shared agendas (i.e. anti-Trumpism). The dirtbag left understands this. What they reject are progressive-leftists being neglected, despite the foundering of the liberal/Democratic institution. They’re tired of sitting, slouched and bored, elbows on the table, at the kids’ table. And unlike the purely anarchic alt-righters doing it “for the lulz,” the alt-left offers a coherent, practical, progressive political agenda. As Chapo co-founder Will Menaker put it on a recent episode of the show, addressing an imagined audience pragmatist liberals and centrists: “Yes, let’s come together. But get this through your f–king head: you must bend the knee to us. Not the other way around. You have been proven as failures, and your entire worldview has been discredited.”

As Marcus H. Johnson of the Huffington Post tweets, with a screen cap highlighting that last sentence, “Imagine being a wealthy white guy and telling this to poor minorities who vote for Democrats.”

It’s like there’s a fascistic side to liberalism, or something.

Porn without the porn. That flick was okay by the way, though I haven't rewatched it, which is one test of value. Memorable line, to our hero from his gf, "Did you just fake an orgasm?" "What matters is not IQ but good character" Not/but is too simple. IQ matters a great deal for all kinds of things, some obvious, some not, from school performance to life expectancy.

The analysis of IQ impact also matters a great deal, since it calls into question all kinds of spurious arguments, including but not only about racial discrimination.

"and that's available to anybody" A good point to make, even if it more aspirational than entirely true, but also increasingly irrelevant when invocation of character itself is easily tarred as racist obstruction of progressive state power.

OK, I read the whole John McWhorter scribe on IQ and black people. He theorizes the black IQ is cultural, based on black commitment to oral culture. I have some sympathy with the theory, which might also explain the decrease in white IQ as white culture is moving into electronic space.

However I don't see a suggestion to address the fix, or that white society should attempt to change black culture. Or how. Or if IQ should not longer matter.

I suspect IQ will matter as long as education is based on literature, and I'm not imaginative enough to see how education can avoid being based on literature.

She just assume that meant *her* sibling. And that it would be Tyrion. (So it almost can't be him, because that would mean she'd actually understood some part of the prophecy correctly -- and it would spoil the delightful irony that her defensive hatred of him based on that misinterpretation is what has brought her to the brink of ruin.)

Good question.

For the answer, look at what happened in Iraq. In response to the EO ban, they got their act together and agreed to work with the U.S. to fix the problems that prevented us from properly vetting Iraqi immigrants. And the President removed them from the list.

It needs to be said: This is a good outcome for everyone.

Presumably, some other countries on the list might do the same -- if they were under any kind of pressure. Which they aren't. Because the temporary ban hasn't been in effect.

By the time Jordan died, I no longer cared about WoT -- he kept introducing more and more exposition, and it seemed like the series would never end. I became less interested in slogging through 800 page WoT books, and more interested in reading shorter novels from the Golden Age of SF (typically 150-200 pages).

Eventually someone else finished the WoT series, and it ended pretty much the way I expected it to.

The whole experience put me off on the multi-book series thing.

I tried GoT, and I really *wanted* to like it, because everyone at the office was raving about it. But I gave up after 150 pages (and 3 episodes of the show) because I realized I didn't care whether any of the characters lived or died.

...But in June, [Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya] was permitted to fly back to the U.S., have the meeting with Trump Junior — at Trump Tower, no less — and then end up in the front row for a congressional hearing involving testimony from a former U.S. ambassador to Russia, then turning up at a D.C. showing of a documentary film on the negative effects of the Magnitsky Act, and later appearing at a dinner involving Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) and former Rep. Ron Dellums (D-CA) who is now a lobbyist for the Russians. The repeal of that legislation is a priority item for the Russians and a personal project of Veselnitskaya’s; it, rather than any Clinton dirt, was reportedly the primary subject brought forth at the meeting with Donald Trump Jr.

All of this without a visa! Not to mention Veselnitskaya didn’t file a FARA (Foreign Agents Registration Act) document before acting as a lobbyist for a foreign entity, as required by law. Neither, apparently, did Dellums. Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) wrote a fascinating letter Tuesday to Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson asking them to please find out what in the hell Veselnitskaya was doing in this country last June.

And further, it turns out Veselnitskaya was connected to Fusion GPS, the Democrat oppo research firm which employed a former British spy who used Russian contacts to produce the infamous and debunked Pee Pee Dossier smearing Trump. Veselnitskaya hired Fusion GPS head Glenn Simpson to work on behalf of Prevezon, the company she was allowed into the country to represent, in its efforts to repeal the Magnitsky Act. Fusion then hired Christopher Steele, the British spy who drew on Russian sources to produce that dossier, and made him available for private briefings on the dossier with left-leaning media sources such as Mother Jones, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Yahoo! News, the New Yorker and CNN in September....

The guy from Fusion was asked, not subpoena'd to appear in front of Congress. He declined.

Tillerson and another were asked to find out how in the hell she got into the country with no Visa in 2016.

Bewbs matter to characters in porn movies. They don't really matter in high fantasy epics ... except for this one, I guess.

Bewbs seems to be a recurring element of GoT. It's what the anime folks call "fan service". I guess it helps keep the fanbois glued to the screen, to see who's going to whip off their tops next.

Only thing that made Targaryen interesting for me was the dragon lady thing. But that was predictable from the first couple episodes, and it's just turned into a big yawner. The dragons have turned into the Thing That Always Gets You Out Of Trouble.

I gave up on Walking Dead for similar reasons -- the exposition never stopped, and I realized I was watching a never-ending soap opera. Sorry, not interested in soap operas .. and that's what GoT looks like to me.

Tri Tip rub for one large or two small roasts ($5.99 is a good price) Equal amounts of kosher salt, garlic powder, cracked pepper (maybe 2 tbsp each). (I sometimes add more kosher because I like salty) Chili powder about 1 tbsp. I used to use Grandma's but they went out of businesses/ Now I use Williams Chili powder. It is a good blend of various chilies & spices. If you can't get that then add 1/2 tsp ground cumin to your chili powder if it doesn't have that already in the product. 1 tsp paprika. Some cayenne if you like a bit more zip. Fresh Rosemary chopped 1 to 1/2 tsp or 1 tbsp dried rosemary. You can always multiply this rub and keep it in the fridge in a small jar for a while.

You may want to baste the roast after searing periodically with a mix of chopped garlic, olive oil or vegetable oil and a bit of vinegar. 2 tbsp vinegar to 1 cup oil..Don't know how that would work in an oven. If you have two roasts. Try one and see if it makes a difference or makes it worse.

I've not done a tri tip in an oven so I don't know how it will turn out for crispy on the outside. I would cook it at a relatively low temp (225 - 250) on a rack in a roasting pan until somewhat under your desired degree of done. Probe with an instant read probe thermometer and then flash cook at 450 or broil briefly on both sides to give it that crispy and caramelized exterior.

You want to take the roast out or off the coals about 5 to 10 degrees below your desired degree of done and let it rest under a foil tent for about 5 minutes or so, to keep the juices in when you slice it. It will continue to cook itself in the foil. Better under done than cooked to a shoe leather state. You can always put it back in the oven or on the BBQ. You can't UNcook it.

Good luck!!!

I suppose Chuck will oppose Kid Rock for US Senate from Michigan?

In the primary, yes. Because we already have a truly great candidate. Already declared, team in place, fundraising well under way.

His name is Bob Young. Former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice. Federalist Society member. (Easily recognizable at our mixers; he's one of a very small handful of African-Americans, which is a pity, and he's the only guy wearing blue jeans because, well, he is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and he can wear what he wants, off the bench. Bob Young was featured, on Trump's short list #1 of potential SCOTUS nominees. Bob is a an intensely intelligent, diligent, hard working rock-solid conservative who has won his MiSupCt re-elections handily, and without controversy or scandal.

With a candidate like that, I do not know why a Kid Rock would screw things up. Yeah, I know that the low-information Tea Party types might like him; he might pick up some younger voters and some crossover working-class Dems.

But Kid Rock is pro-choice. And Kid Rock is pro-Obergefell. That puts him at the very bottom of my candidate list. I hope and expect that Right to Life will kill the candidacy of any Republican who runs in a contested primary as both pro-choice and pro-Obergefell.

If Kid Rock is going to try to somehow channel a "Trump" vote in Michigan, he is going to have to overcome another declared GOP Senate candidate, Lena Epstein, who was Trump's Michigan campaign co-chair. A lot of us joke that she got that job because everybody else got their rejections in on time. But for Trump to anoint Kid Rock over his own campaign co-chair... well, that would be Trumpian.

"The argument is that Trump didn't follow the Supreme Court."

The judge argued, somewhat convincingly I have to say, that Grandparents should be included among those who have a "close familial relationship."

But he then extended that inclusion to "grandparents, grandchildren, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins" without any discussion as to how the he made the expansion from grandparents all the way out to cousins other than that the expansion was requested by the plaintiffs.

What am I missing? Doesn't granting the plaintiff request in full openly defy the SC's admittedly unclear definition of "close" familial relationships? I don't see how he made the stretch from "close" to "any."

Statements from the CEO of JPMorgan, Jamie Dimon -

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/dimon-says-bad-policies-are-hurting-the-average-american-2017-07-14

"We have become one of the most bureaucratic confusing litigious societies on the planet. It’s almost an embarrassment to be an American citizen traveling around the world and listening to the stupid sh—t we have to deal with in this country"

I.e., as so many have been saying - the US economy is still tied up with regulatory bloat and legal risk. The state is the worst enemy of the US.

"He declined to say whether President Donald Trump’s administration was moving fast enough on those issues, but he did call out the media for failing to cover it."

The criterion "close" familial relationships should grant priority to processing not exemption from scrutiny when originating from an area with a known contagion, whether it is disease, terrorism, or another threat to the life and welfare of Americans, legal residents, and legal visitors.

On this score, Cook and I almost agree.

"Why won't the "temporary" ban be mooted by the passage of so much time?"

Except that once all legal challenges have been exhausted, there isn't much to stop the temporary from becoming permanent. I've thought this is the long game all along.

there isn't much to stop the temporary from becoming permanent

It ends when the character or circumstantial contagion is contained and the threat is mitigated (e.g. common consensus).

@Nonapod,
It's been a long time, and I was way less mechanically inclined then than I am now, but haying in the Sandhills with a Farmall M with a mower arm and a trailing mower (scissors action, like a hedge trimmer), I don't remember any power take-off and do not see how there could have been one to the trailing mower, so I think the mower blades were powered simply by mechanical means from the outrigger wheels on the mower arms.

"Outcome-based tests are an example of a structural instability."

That doesn't mean they're not predictive. And while you can't measure "character," you can measure aspects of behavior, like impulsivity, and yes, it is largely heritable.

I'm very interested in that. Been listening to a lot of Jordan Peterson lately and he savages Derrida and the post-modernists.

From Drudge
"Sen. Bernie Sanders’ claims that an ongoing FBI probe of his wife is based on partisan politics don’t square with the fact that it began under President Obama and appears to closely track Democratic opposition research revealed in the hacked emails of the Hillary Clinton campaign.

The FBI and U.S. Attorney in Vermont are investigating Jane O’Meara Sanders for her role in a failed 2010, $10 million college land deal that she orchestrated during her seven-year stint as president of Burlington College in Vermont.

According to a series of 2015 emails to and from Clinton’s campaign manager, John Podesta, leaked to and published on Wikileaks, the Clinton team wrote an extensive political opposition memo entitled “Sanders Top Hits-Thematics.” The memo details Mrs. Sanders’ role in the college’s financial failure, and parallels the ongoing FBI investigation, now before a grand jury, into the scandal. Other email correspondence shows the Clinton team believed scandals surrounding the college and Jane Sanders provided an opportunity to knock the Vermont senator’s reputation and chances to win the Democratic primary election.

“I think our first question is how are we going to defeat Sanders. … he's not who he says he is -- gun votes, DSCC money, Jane. There may be other options too but these seem to be the strongest attacks to consider. How we undermine Sanders candidacy is our threshold question,” a Clinton campaign official wrote in the fall 2015.

Attaching to an email the “hits” piece with potentially damaging information about Mrs. Sanders, another official wrote: “We have a meeting scheduled on Thursday to discuss next steps on Bernie Sanders … we'd like for everyone to come having reviewed the material and ready to discuss which hits and themes we want to deploy."

Academic postmodernism analyses stuff they dislike, which can't work.

Derrida analyzes stuff he likes.

It's tracking down the literary effects that you see with.

Derrida is the literary equivalent of Kurt Godel.

It can't be consistent and complete but you can move around in it and it's not random.

I get the sense that Cersei will be around to the very end. She's one of the stars. Plus, all prophecies come with a Caesarian twist upon delivery......My heart rejoices whenever Emilia Clarke has a nude scene, but even fully clothed she's fun to watch. She's slightly miscast as the Dragon Queen, but that miscasting is part of the charm. She's naturally an ingenue and delivers the fierce queen lines as an ingenue. Someone like Eva Green would probably be better at ordering the crucifixion of her enemies, but she would miss the sweetness at the core of Daenyres....... This isn't a prediction, but the logic of the plot would seem to indicate a marriage between Jon Snow and the Dragon Queen. The logic of the plot is not always the best predictor though.

That would be aunt and nephew getting married. not that that means anything in GoT.

Snow is a Targaryan and hence a dragon-killer. I predict Danny almost sweeps the board in the 7 kingdoms until Jon, with a little advice from the newly educated Sam, fixes her wagon. Personally, I find them both insufferable. If I had my way, the short guy and the assassin chick would rule the place.
