"For the first time, Jamie’s getting irrational criticism from her fellow liberals, who think that if you represent anyone associated with the other side, you must be a Republican in hiding."

"Jamie is obviously a liberal Democrat, but this is not a betrayal. Jamie is being patriotic and heroic and consistent with the best traditions of the bar. We have to resist zealotry on both sides."

Said Alan Dershowitz about Jamie Gorelick, quoted in "When a liberal power lawyer represents the Trump family, things can get ugly" in The Washington Post. Gorelick took on Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner as clients.

How did "things... get ugly"? Well, obviously, it's people who are being ugly. Here are the 3 examples of ugliness given in the article:
In the most public slap, Hilary Rosen, a prominent Democratic strategist and lobbyist, tweeted, “Hey Jamie Gorelick, you’ve just poured that ‘Complicit’ perfume on yourself,” a reference to a “Saturday Night Live” parody ad that imagined an Ivanka Trump-branded scent. (Rosen declined to elaborate on the tweet, saying only, “It is what it is.”)

“Representing Jared and Ivanka is a case of pushing the ethical envelope, helping a wealthy family on the brink of using the presidency to further enrich themselves,” said David Halperin, a speechwriter in the Clinton White House and former counsel to the Senate Intelligence Committee. “Gorelick is a Clinton supporter embracing the family that wanted to put Hillary Clinton in jail. People in Washington are all too willing to forgive that.”

This being Washington, some of Gorelick’s critics tuck their attacks behind the cloak of anonymity. “Do you want to be seen as a fixer available to all or a fixer for principles you believe in?” said a lawyer who has worked with Gorelick on campaigns since the Clinton and Gore era. “One probably pays better than the other, but every step you take has consequences.”
Here's that parody ad, which I'd known about but never watched before just now:

Speaking of ugliness, what dominates that SNL clip is beauty. You get completely caught up in the beauty of Scarlett Johansson (as Ivanka Trump). That makes it very funny when she glamorously puts on her lipstick and the reflected image in her mirror is Alec Baldwin (as Donald Trump). So, suddenly ugliness. You think you're pretty but you are really ugly.

Interesting that another woman, Hilary Rosen, chose that idea to discipline Gorelick, the metaphor of outward physical beauty to represent inner virtue.

ADDED: Hilary Rosen... why did I already have a tag for her? Ah, yes! It was back in 2012: Rosengate. Remember that?
"Adviser to Obama, DNC Attacks Ann Romney"... DNC advisor Hilary Rosen, trying to say that Mitt Romney "doesn't connect" on the issue of women struggling economically: He's "running around the country, saying, well, my wife tells me that what women really care about are economic issues, and when I listen to my wife, that's what I'm hearing." She pauses, then blurts out the unfortunate line, which she clearly thinks is a great zinger: "Guess what? His wife has actually not worked a day in her life."...
Women attacking women. Ha. I heard about a special place in hell...

These are the same people that don't understand why Christian bakers would be upset about baking a wedding cake for a gay marriage. These are the same people that don't understand why half the country was repulsed by Hillary's taped laughter about defending a child rapist by slut-shaming the victim on the stand.

Yeah, these are the same kind of people who oppose the death penalty while never considering the added pain that they are causing the victim's families.

Treated like a pariah because she too on Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner as clients?

She should be tried and then put up against the wall and shot for her role at Fannie Mae where she got paid $26 million.

"“We will take CRA loans off your hands--we will buy them from your portfolios, or package them into securities--so you have fresh cash to make more CRA loans,” she said. “Some people have assumed we don't buy tough loans. Let me correct that misimpression right now. We want your CRA loans because they help us meet our housing goals.”

"We believe we are managed safely. We are very pleased that Moody's gave us an A-minus in the area of bank financial strength – without a reference to the government in any way. Fannie Mae is among the handful of top-quality institutions." One year later, government regulators accused Fannie Mae of improper accounting "to the tune of $9 billion" in unrecorded losses.

Scarlett Johansson should be against the law for being too beautiful. But again, that's who you need if you want to portray Ivanka Trump.

The Democrats push guilt-by-association when the association is with Trump. Now watch their reactions later today to Delta Air Lines' withdrawal of sponsorship from a NY theatre company that is doing a staging of 'Julius Caesar' with a portrayal of Caesar that stops just short of a neon sign reading 'IT'S DONALD TRUMP!' The airline will be raked over the coals for not wanting to be associated with assassination porn.

And they have no sense of shame.

To people of a certain age, Hillary Rosen is persona non grata for her days with the RIAA and the wars over downloadable music. Talk about "Complicit"...

Curious George for the win!
One thing about WaPoo's thumb-sucker articles like this is that they fail to provide full context. Jamie Gorelick worked on Nixon's defense? Who knew? Jamie Gorelick feasted at Fannie Mae? Can't mention that. She wrote the Gorelick memo at the DOJ that formalized the wall between the foreign and domestic intelligence agencies, but didn't disclose that fact to the 9/11 Commission? No cover-up there. She defended Duke from lawsuits by former lacrosse players? Why mention that?
Jamie has been at the site of many mysterious political and financial car wrecks. Stop her before she kills again. Watch out Jared and Ivanka!

The weight the leftie mind places on the late night shows is disturbing. Likening a leftie comrade to a parody ad now stands as stinging social criticism.

The shows really are all that's holding these people together.

"Using the Presidency to further enrich themselves" -- sounds like the Clintons and the Obamas to me except you need to remove the "further" perhaps. "Further" would apply to the Johnsons and the Carters.

There are thousands of Trump slimers on every TV network, other than Fox, all competing to find nastyness in everthing connected to Trump. And they are starting to run out of material.

They are stuck with accusing him of doing the right things. Talk about frustrating for them. What started as Trump Derangement Syndrome has reached psychotic break.

All they have left is sneering accusations that Trump is being a successful leader of our economy and Foreign policy as an evil Political Trick just so he can be the successful President of the USA. And it confuses them like lab rats in a maze.

I worry more that Gorelick's fingerprints were all over "stovepiping" and other issues which helped contribute to 9/11. She also did a fine job of covering up Clinton issues in the 9/11 commission reports. Hummm. Come to think of it, she is exactly the kind of attorney I would want defending me.

Not sure I have changed my views on her, at least yet. Combining her role on preventing the FBI from preventing 9/11 to her role in helping to create the financial crisis through being on the Fannie May board, Goerlich has a long climb before she will be seen as anything close to good. Together, they bring out some of the worst features about giving progressives power. In the first, she put progressive orthodoxy ahead of national security, and over 3,000 died in one day as a result. And, in the latter, she pocketed millions, presumably as a reward for her service to the Clintons, while ultimately causing millions of struggling people to lose their homes through foreclosures, and millions more their jobs from the longest recession in the last century triggered by the collapse of the feckless blending to those who couldn't afford the loans, that she helped oversee in that sinecure. Getting rich doing bad things justified by progressive ideology.

I"ll do you one better:
Hillary Clinton can represent a man accused of raping a 12 year old girl (a man who later plead out to a lesser charge) and can laugh about that case later, and that's just "a lawyer doing her job," but representing Republicans, well, that's too far!

HoodlumDoodlum said...

I have to admit, though, that I groaned out loud when I first saw Gorelick's name in an article about Kushner. I'm not sure there's a high-level Fed Gov fuckup over the last couple of Admins she wasn't a part of (from hampering intelligence sharing pre-9/11 to "overseeing" Fannie Mae and encouraging Fannie to get heavily into subprime mortgages pre-RE bust [for which she made $25M+])...it's amazing she's still allowed anywhere near anything important. Oh well.

What rational human being -- Democrat or Republican, Conservative or Progressive, does not wistfully dream that Hillary Clinton was put into jail -- and the key to her cell thrown away -- somewhere around the mid-nineties?

How many people have watched "Minority Report" and not thought how keen it would have been if that precrime unit had been around when Hillary turned eighteen?

I'm not talking about a nasty, grim, maximum security prison cell -- just a nice minimum security cell where she could hang up a cat calendar or two, do a bit of decoration, and hang around with a bunch of other white collar criminals for the rest of her life.

She'd probably enjoy it more than her present circumstances.

When I was first considering voting for Trump, I recalled one his Apprentice shows where Ivanka guested as a judge. I remember finding Trump annoying, but was very impressed with his daughter - intelligent, classy, graceful. I gave Trump respect for raising a woman of such character. And I think my first realization that Trump's public persona is quite different than his private (and true) one.

I have been really surprised, that the best-publicized outrage in the matter of Jamie Gorelick hiring in as Jared Kushner's personal attorney, has been the outrage of the left, angry at Gorelick for acting as a Kushner lawyer.

As opposed to right-wing complaints that Kushner has hired one of the most iconic sinecures in all of Clintondom.

Hoodlum Doodlum, just above, has Gorelick's record exactly right.

I don't know what is worse; one of your leaders being professionally served by an icon of the opposition, or one of your side's icons professionally serving a leader of the opposition. That is a hard call. No matter what, this is absolutely as swampy as it gets in Washington.

Althouse has three posts right now under the "Gorelick" tag. I can't recall all of the hundreds of good comments (especially from the time that she was considered for the AG job to replace Eric Holder in the Obama Administration), but I know there were some great ones.

AS I pointed out at another bog on this topic, when you are hiring a killer (which is how I consider most lawyers not my children). you don't care much about their politics. Their aim is more important.

I haven't read anyone talking about Gorelick's Fannie Mae gig, which was like a Democrat mob operation. Why would anyone on either side of the aisle think she had any scruples. I find her an odd/bad choice for several reasons.

Krumhorn said...

There is a very special seat in hell reserved for Gorelick that is very close to the hottest sulphuric fingers of flame. She was the Clinton instrument that created the Great Wall of information between the intelligence services and domestic police services. If there was any single factor that brought us 9/11, apart from the actors themselves, that Wall was it.

May she sit in that seat for eternity.

Kirk Parker said...

Sure it's unfair: but if Gorelick dies an agonizing death, miserable and alone, it's hardly worse that those thousands who died on 9/11 experienced and whose death she helped to ensure by her malfeasance.

Does that make Gorelick an ineffective choice of counsel? Is one only supposed to hire nice lawyers, lawyers who are good people, lawyers you like? Is that how it works? Is that what your education and experience tells you?

I'll give you one point, Naffy Helot, you don't say "we conservatives." Or are distinctions not cost effective?

Well, it's today and I still hold her and her 'wall' partially responsible for the deaths of nearly 3,000 people on 9/11/2001.

Does that count?

Am I the only one not surprised by this? Remember Chelsea and Ivanka were pals before the election. Ivanka and Jared are much more New York Liberals than any type of Conservative. I guarantee you they both wish Donald had decided to run as a Democrat.
