“Yes. He was choking on that... Watch them start to choke like dogs... They are desperate for breath.... Ah, he’s choking. Ah, look."

Said Donald Trump — to Time Magazine reporters — as he demonstrated how he watched his TV — "a new 60-plus-inch flat-screen television that he has cued up with clips from the day’s Senate hearing on Russia."

The TV is in the small private dining room in the West Wing, and if this were a fictional movie, after all those lines about choking, the President would, one night, dining alone, choke to death.

Oh, how could a President choke to death? Wouldn't somebody be there to save him? But George W. Bush choked (on a pretzel) when he was watching TV by himself. He passed out and fell on the floor.

Anyway, I wish no harm to befall our President, I just thought all that choking talk was freaky. He watches clips and exults at triumphs he perceives as other people pause and search for the right words. It's interesting. He himself has a style of blurting out words, often the wrong words, or slightly off words — for example, "wiretapping" — that cause his antagonists to jump at the opportunity. His way of speaking, freewheeling and endlessly confident, has worked for him in a wild, crazy way, and you can see by all these "choking" comments about people who do public speech cautiously, that he thinks his style is superior. Meanwhile, his antagonists think he's deranged.

Trump tweeted this morning that given how busy his administration is it can't be expected that what they say can be totally accurate.

If Hillary or Obama wrote that it would be a two week scandal. For Trump it is just the new norm.

I remember that. The Left blogosphere was convinced that GW Bush was passed out in a dead drunk. Those people will make up any old thing that reinforces whatever lunatic things they are required to believe.

"he thinks his style is superior. Meanwhile, his antagonists think he's deranged." Agreed.

Trump doesn't choke because he's continually spitting things out.

Your play on words was clever but Trump was using 'choke' in the Sports sense. BTW, today's #fakenews is that Trump "threatened" Comey - LoL. All Trump did was say Comey had better make sure there are no "tapes" of his conversation with Trump before he starts "leaking". IOW, he'd better tell the truth, because if he doesn't a "tape" might be produced showing him to be wrong.

Not sure how that is a "Threat". A "threat" to tell the truth? I'm sure that when Trump talked to Comey on the telephone, he had aides listening in and writing down what was said, just as he does with Foreign leaders.

rcocean said...

If you want to know how perverse the hate of Trump is. My local morning radio talk show guys brought up Trump humorous re-tweet of Rosie's tweet in December demanding Comey be fired. Did they agree that Democrats are being hypocrites? Of course not. Instead, they sneered and jeered at Trump for tweeting and paying attention to anything Rosie said. I mean, him a President tweeting. How shocking!

Once written, twice... said...

rcocean, if President Obama tweeted likeTrump does, you and Ann would be all over him screaming "Ebonics!" and saying he was dragging down the dignity of the office.

Ann Althouse said...

"Your play on words was clever but Trump was using 'choke' in the Sports sense."

To some extent maybe, but the use of "desperate for breath" cuts the other way. And it is idiomatic to say "choking on his words." I think he is watching people speak, focusing on how the words come out of their mouth, and seeing that they don't come out in a fluent way. He sees himself as an expert on detecting how people really think and whether they are lying by looking at their face, and I think he has pride in the way words just flow out of him. He takes the risk that some things may be wrong but he will get credit for seeming to let the words come right at us as they emerge from his brain.

I am not trying to make a clever play on words here, and I am aware of the sports meaning of choking. I think it's closer to the idea of choking on your words.

The MSM is thinking like Muslims think about the terrible infidels: that their Free Range Speech must be stopped by beheading them. Their heads are where their Free Speech originates, so saw off their heads as an example to speakers of heresy.

Choking also stops speech nearly as good as beheading.

The MSNBS gang now says they will not allow Kellyanne or Sanders on the air. They even dissed CNN for letting Kellyanne on once...while they all ridicule Kellyanne for being MIA. Consider Kellyanne beheaded.

BTW, today's #fakenews is that Trump "threatened" Comey - LoL.

Here's the hysterical, taxpayer-supported (501(3)(c)) blogger Rod Dreher just now:

http://www.theamericanconservative.com/dreher/trump-blackmail-comey/

"Trump Attempts To Blackmail Comey. Really

Think about it: the President of the United States is threatening to blackmail the former chief of the nation’s top domestic law enforcement agency in an attempt to shut him up.

Maybe Trump is bluffing, which would be outrageous enough. But what if he’s telling the truth? We have no way of knowing. Now, every single man or woman who goes into the White House to converse with him now has to worry that the president is secretly recording their conversation, and has no scruples against using what is said to blackmail them. What say you, Sen. Mitch McConnell? What say you, CIA director Mike Pompeo?

This is banana republic stuff. This man is out of control. How can we have a functioning government if the President feels entitled to threaten blackmail, and every single official who meets with him in the White House has to worry that they’re being bugged, and that words they say in confidence could be used against them?

Note well that Trump manufactured this crisis out of his own ineptitude and corruption.

Congress is going to have to impeach him to protect the integrity of our Constitutional order. The House impeached Clinton for lying under oath (though the Senate did not convict). Now we have a sitting president threatening blackmail against the FBI director he fired. This, only four months into the president’s administration. Mind-boggling. But here we are. If this is not a bright red line, what is?"

And yet people still refer to him as a "journalist".

These horses have left the barn. The battles over dignity were fought and lost decades ago.

There is no reason anymore to conform to any such a behavioral standard.
It is a weakness to be bound to any such standards if these are not honored by the other side.
It is merely a vulnerability to care, as the side that does not care will use it as a weapon.
Its the Alinsky rule #4 - "Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules."
You are not vulnerable to this if you make it clear that you recognize no rules.

Its a power struggle with no room for niceties.

A few weeks back, the President ordered a gutting of the room. “We found gold behind the walls, which I always knew. Renovations are grand,” he says, boasting that contractors from the General Services Administration resurfaced the walls and redid the moldings in two days. “Remember how hard they worked? They wanted to make me happy.”

I don't know why, but there's something charming about Trumps guilelessness. He just says whatever is on the surface of his mind, totally unfiltered. For whatever reason many people read that as derangement or stupidity. But people are going to believe what they believe about him, it's practically impossible to convince them otherwise.

BTW, Inga:

"Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) on Thursday vouched for President Trump’s assertion in a letter to former FBI Director James Comey that he was not under investigation by the FBI.
Grassley told committee members at an executive meeting that he and Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) had met with Comey last week, and that he had briefed them on who the targets of the various investigations are.

“Senator Feinstein and I heard nothing that contradicted the President’s statement,” he said.

Feinstein then said after Grassley’s statement, “I very much appreciate what you’ve said and it’s very accurate, and we were briefed.”

Choke on that.

Of course FBI is the Mother of all Blackmailers. They taught the USSR secrets of using Kompromat, like they did to MLK hoping to end Civil Rights for African Americans.

But FBI choses loyalty to those that keep them in power. J. Edgar Hoover never admitted The Mafia existed. He was so mad at Bobby Kennedy that he helped cover for LBJ in killing JFK, and when Bobby started winning the Presidency for himself after LBJ withdrew, suddenly another lone and insane murderer professionally executed that most dangerous of the Kennedys.

Thus, you have Trump, who embraces the no rules, bring a gun to a knife fight, get in their face philosophy of the Obama presidency.

We now have a president who speaks like real average people instead of the faux-professorial image Obama projected or the eGOP from Maine gone to TX semi-folksy manner of GWB. It's the difference between formal speech (often written speeches literally being presented verbally) and casual speech. Trumps speech is so casual it often folds back on itself and sets up contradictions or explores metaphors from sports and wrestling. In short, his type of speech would fit in at any rural bar or church social but drives academics and professional talkers nuts. He wouldn't fit in at Oberlin -- or in DC if he hadn't barged in unexpectedly.

Yet, he conveys his message pretty clearly, and most of America "get it" when he speaks. It's like music, where maybe some words of a song are unintelligible but one feels the rhythm and melody and words together and "gets" the feeling being conveyed by the artist. The chattering class of TV-centric talking heads and establishment R pols and makers of Facebook memes decidedly do NOT get it. They are creating a new art form of misinterpreting Trump and like a rotten pineapple their art stinks. We the people get it, why can't the idiots populating the MSM-DNC hear what he's saying?

Because they are too busy hating Trump to take the time to listen to him. Too busy taking him literally to take his message seriously.

Mr. Trump and the GOP rightly see this as a major risk to national security. While the National Security Agency has been cooperating with the House Intelligence Committee and allowing lawmakers to review documents that might show the source of the leaks, Mr. Comey’s FBI has resolutely refused to do the same."

Here's a guy who saw the error of his ways.

http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-pol-sykes-talk-radio-2017-story.html

"For nearly 25 years, Charlie Sykes was one of the most powerful and influential voices in Wisconsin.

He cheer-led policies that turned this historically progressive state into a model of conservative governance. He made and destroyed political careers, using his perch on Milwaukee talk radio to help vault figures such as House Speaker Paul Ryan and Gov. Scott Walker to national prominence.

But for the moment Sykes was speechless. He sank into the brown leather banquette of a suburban steakhouse. He stammered. He sighed.

“When you’ve devoted your whole life to certain beliefs and you think now they have been undermined and that you might have been deluded about things,” he began. “So. So. Um...”

In 2016 Sykes emerged as one of Donald Trump’s most prominent critics, a stance that outraged listeners, strained longstanding friendships and left him questioning much of what he once held true.

What it means to be a conservative. The role of race in politics. The wisdom of voters.

More troubling, Sykes believes he and others in the shoutrageous world of talk radio contributed mightily to the rise of Trump, to the contagion of fake news that abetted his presidential candidacy and to invigorating the racist, sexist and xenophobic elements drawn to his caustic campaign."

Better yet, she probably has one of those moronic "Co-exist" bumper stickers which would be okay anywhere in the world EXCEPT any Muslim majority nation.

There the Islamists would drag you from your car and murder you on the spot for that crime.

Which would be bad I guess but not as bad as being a conservative poster on Althouse!

"Deranged, as in believing that he, Donald Trump, invented the phrase, "priming the pump." If not mentally deranged, then mental incompetency comes into play.

As for "endlessly confident", I believe his bluster comes from his hangup related to an inability to overcome his own insufficiency. He talks like an adolescent with no point to make.

But you already know what I think - and as the days of his presidency climb higher, his incompetence becomes more and more apparent."

http://time.com/4692507/congress-remove-donald-trump-impeachment/

"But there is another provision in the Amendment that has received much less popular attention — one that could allow Congress to play a role in removing the President. And no, it isn’t impeachment. Instead, a little-known provision in Section 4 empowers Congress to form its own body to evaluate the President’s fitness for office, eliminating the need for the Cabinet’s involvement in the process (emphasis ours):

Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

But what constitutional constraints are put on this power? Remarkably, there aren’t any. The framers of the 25th Amendment left the provision purposely vague, allowing Congress flexibility to decide on its specifics at a later date. It should come as no surprise to those who bemoan Congress’s frequent inactivity to find out that in the 50 years since the Amendment passed, it has never made such a decision."

Something to consider.

Given the choices I think I made the right one.

The Clintons enriched themselves enough on my dime. Time to give another party a chance.

Apparently the founders intended for us to governed by Time magazine and Charlie Sykes.

Don't bother looking for the precise constitutional language. It's hidden in one of the many leftist penumbra's.

The wheels on the bus are getting wobbly.

https://www.axios.com/trumps-comey-fight-spooks-capitol-hill-2404656591.html

There is widespread concern among Congressional leadership about Trump's frame of mind in the wake of the Comey firing.

Senior Senate aide: "It has to stop ... never seen anything like this in my entire career."

House leadership source: "Lot of anxiety, don't know next shoe to drop."

Here are the concerns we've heard from senior congressional sources.

Trump going after FBI director he just fired. Trump is supposed to be enacting an agenda, but is setting up a huge fight with someone who has nothing to lose.

White House is careening between crisis after crisis. "We need our asset out there every day barnstorming for tax reform, health care," the senate aide said.

Who can tell him no? Where is Reince, where are the adults?

Whose idea was it to blame Rod Rosenstein.

What an awful position this created for Richard Burr, the Senate Intel chair who has been working with Comey on this investigation.

What about the forgotten people? if they burn all this time on fights in DC, how can they deliver results to people in Trump-land
Russia thing is self-inflicted. Root of it was Trump's Obama tweet. Very little sympathy for Trump from exasperated people."

Inga, still desperately clinging to the fake dossier, lunges at the next Dem/MSM contrivance.

Unexpectedly.

Yeah, the Dems have nothing to do with the fake Trump/Russia collusion lie!

Lol

Yeah, the left is really beginning to try and sell that one. Which is strange
..NOT.

Gee, it's almost like the Dems know there is nothing there and are taking the initial steps to say "it wasn't us, it was self-inflicted by Trump".

If you are thinking that sounds awfully similar to the Dems attempting to hand off the astonishingly wonderful Obamacare to republicans....give yourself a cookie because you would be right.

http://theweek.com/articles/698288/theres-no-waking-from-americas-trump-nightmare

"The events of this week have confirmed beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Oval Office is occupied by an ignorant, impulse-driven lunatic.

Just how much of a lunatic is President Donald J. Trump? So much so that he fired the director of the FBI in a fit of pique despite the fact that the FBI is conducting an investigation of whether and to what extent the president's own campaign colluded with Russian intelligence services to manipulate the election that landed Trump in the White House. If self-inflicted wounds can range from a paper cut to a bullet in the brain, this is something like the accidental amputation of a leg just above the knee: The victim can still get around, but he's undeniably and irreversibly hobbled, not to mention weakened by a near-fatal loss of blood.

But not even that gruesome metaphor manages to capture the extent of our president's distinctive form of self-destructive madness

There isn't a single office holder, political operative, experienced staffer, or journalist in Washington who wouldn't have grasped in an instant that firing James Comey under such circumstances would be massively harmful to the president's efforts to defend himself against the Russian allegations and could well open himself up to a credible (or perhaps more than credible) charge of obstruction of justice. Even bomb-thrower extraordinaire Stephen Bannon understood it!"

Aaaand Hillary is still not president. Unemployment is at an all time low. Manufacturing is hiring again. Illegal boarder crossings are at an all time low. The DOW is up based on real profits not QE. Repeal/dimantling Obamacare is in the works as is tax reduction.

I think so too, since I can't remember one word of criticism she has ever leveled at Hillary. I believe Ritmo and Cookie voted for Stein, but they were consistent critics of the Clintons.

When has Inga ever criticized a Democrat?

The reason Inga went from being Inga, to another anon was because she can't argue. She continually gets mocked for her inability to support her ever shifting positions which generally mount to, "I hate conservatives and Republicans!!!"

She has two defenses.

The first is going anon.

The second is it oring what others are telling her and just using copy and paste.

And we wonder why the media keeps digging g it's own grave? It's because people like Inga need their words for comfort. Without them, she would have to think for herself. And make her own arguments.

Rusty,

You left out that 0.7% GDP number. Must be left over from the Obama economy. Had a look at that VIX index lately? Obamacare repeal? You are kidding riight? Comey hysteria will now consume Congress for the rest of the year, so good luck on that legislative agenda.

The border crossing numbers MIGHT be an accomplishment.

I thought the thread was about Trump wordsmithing. Turns out you still have Hillary living in your head.

Once written has shown an illuminating light on the left's true self when the remaining portion of the lefty mask finally slipped and called Althouse a racist.

And the left views racists as fascists.

And left has clearly stated there should be no free speech for fascists.

And the left has said that fascist speech is "violence" which justifies actual lefty physical violence.

You can see where this is going.

Why does every NeverTrumper think the perfect was an option instead of accepting that this was the best option - flawed as it is - that we had?
