Don't let girls learn.

"The Trump administration is discontinuing a signature girls education initiative championed by former first lady Michelle Obama, according to officials."
The "Let Girls Learn" program, which she and President Barack Obama started in 2015 to facilitate educational opportunities for adolescent girls in developing countries, will cease operation immediately, according to an internal document obtained by CNN....
UPDATE: I thought I saw a headline saying that the Trump administration disputes this news story, but now I can't find it. "Trump administration denies it plans to end Michelle Obama’s girl’s education program."

Oh my, discontinuing this program will drag us all the way back the dark ages of early 2015!

I'm more interested in seeing changes in American public education where boys are seen as "defective girls". While I want my granddaughter to have educational opportunities, I want the same for my 3 grandsons.

We really need to stop extrapolating from the exception to form general conclusions for political progress. It preserves a bad precedent, undermines moral conservation, and deters positive progress.

campy:

It's irreconcilable.

Ambrose:

And earlier, where boys and girls learned. A time when boys and girls... nay, men and women, set priorities to meet reconciliation of moral, natural, and personal imperatives.

Spare me the sanctimony. Remember, Obama didn't allow school choice in D.C. while he sent his two girls to private school.

How many "signature" initiatives did this lady have?

Barack and Michelle have fallen into $60 million for book deals. They can afford to start a program called "Let Our Girls Learn" if they really care about it. Many people are still wanting to give the Obamas money and nice things, such as the recent "short" vacation to various tropical islands and yachts. Hit those deep pockets for additional funding - they clearly at some point have made enough money, and can spread the wealth around!

I've paid enough for their programs.

Because they're there.

Her name was writ in water.

I never even heard of this "signature" initiative until I read this post.

It's difficult for girls (and boys) to learn when they're hungry due to Michele's signature School Lunch initiative.

"We felt it was important to have a branded campaign that drew attention to those issues, and we found that when we did it, we had extraordinary support," Tchen said. "I think it's unfortunate to not continue with the branded campaign. We think that this is an issue that has bipartisan support, it's really not a Republican or Democratic issue."

-- So... literally the problem is that they want to keep a brand, even though all the good work is going to keep going on?

Saudi Arabia has a similar program:

"In October of last year, the Obama administration attempted to reinforce "Let Girls Learn" ahead of a new administration. The White House announced $5 million in private sector commitments toward the programs administered under the "Let Girls Learn" banner, . . .." Obama could match this by donating the proceeds from one dozen speeches at $400,000 each.

From what I understand, the girls are learning just fine.

It's the boys who are having problems, due to the fact that they're expected to behave like girls.

"The Trump administration is discontinuing a signature girls education initiative championed by former first lady Michelle Obama, according to officials."

Unless I misunderstood the article, that statement is misleading. The "program" is not being discontinued, only the branding.

While aspects of the initiative's programming will continue, employees have been told to stop using the "Let Girls Learn" name and were told that, as a program unto itself, "Let Girls Learn" was ending.

"Moving forward, we will not continue to use the 'Let Girls Learn' brand or maintain a stand-alone program," read an email sent to Peace Corps employees this week by the agency's acting director Sheila Crowley.

and

"Let Girls Learn" was an inter-governmental initiative run primarily at the Peace Corps and the United States Agency for International Development. A spokesman for the Peace Corps said Monday the agency would continue its efforts toward girls' education.

and

"The Peace Corps continues to prioritize girls' education and empowerment programming," the spokesman said. "Girls' education and empowerment has been a hallmark of our work over the past 56 years and we look forward to continuing those efforts with our interagency partners. We remain dedicated to the passionate work of our volunteers and staff to empower and educate girls in their communities."

It sounds like the "signature girls education initiative" was mostly just branding of existing programs, which will continue. Michelle Obama hardest hit...

Certainly an admirable, if vague, idea. But what are the specifics?

While aspects of the initiative's programming will continue, employees have been told to stop using the "Let Girls Learn" name and were told that, as a program unto itself, "Let Girls Learn" was ending.

What "aspects" will continue? Is this just dumping the name or is it more than just that?

"'Let Girls Learn' provided a platform to showcase Peace Corps' strength in community development, shining a bright light on the work of our Volunteers all over the world," Crowley wrote. "We are so proud of what 'Let Girls Learn' accomplished and we have all of you to thank for this success."

This all seems really vague. I have no idea what specifically this program has done, or if anything other than the name is actually ending. It's a bunch of noise without much content.

I sure hope Trump is ready with "I know where they can find $400k-$800k" to fund this program.

Trump should even offer to match all Obama's donations to this good cause from his own speaking fees... once he leaves office in 2024!

Poor readering. How dare those plebes go off script?!!

Why, there oughta be a law....and wherever the leftists go, there is.....

I’d support eliminating the program entirely (not merely continuing it under a different name). Federal tax dollars should not be used to pay for this and if they’re collecting “private contributions” for it – they don’t need the federal government to do that.

Next up for readering: how dare those kids not eat those wonderful meals that the most Magnificent Michelle conjured up for them? (which, by the way, Michelles own daughters never had to eat)

It's always fun when the leftists take time out from their all-out efforts to import islamist supremacists who throw acid in school girls faces, perform FGM on them, or simply kidnap them for sex slavery to lecture everyone else about what is best for school girls.

Carry on lefties!

Good ol' Michelle . . . graduate of Princeton and Harvard law, took a public outreach position at a Chicago hospital, became first lady, and put her talents to work changing public school menus. MO has no training in nutrition, and her kids never attended a public school.

Remember the Equal Rights Amendment?
Couldn't get it passed in the 70s and 80s. The anti-argument was that it would lead to women in combat and same-sex bathrooms.
You don't need an ERA if you've got the federal bureaucracies and judges on your side.
Makes you wonder about our democracy, doesn't it? You need a supermajority to amend the constitution, but unelected bureaucrats and judges can bypass the amendment process at will.

Why should American taxpayers be on the hook to help children in foreign countries learn, male or female, when it's obvious that we need to concentrate harder on the children in our own country? If we had unlimited resources, then it would be wonderful to be able to be so munificent, but we don't, so we shouldn't.

Clyde said...

I don't have a problem with charitable groups helping foreign children learn, however. Perhaps that champion of women, Hillary Clinton, could send a few millions from her "charitable" foundation to help replace the money that the meanie Donald Trump won't send them.

The "Let Girls Learn" program, which she and President Barack Obama started in 2015 to facilitate educational opportunities for adolescent girls in developing countries.
Limiting the education of girls is a way that people in "developing" countries use to stabilize their culture.
Obama is not the anti-colonialist people make him out to be. neo-liberal is often another word for neo-colonialist. Neo-liberals don't want to take over and settle other countries. Instead they make development money, aid, and trade deals with countries that voluntarily change their domestic policy to suit the neo-liberals' ideas about "human rights".

I suspect what is happening is that the 'brand' is a trademark that is owned by someone (hmm) and it cannot now be used by the government supported agencies. I notice that there is a log of weaseling around whether funding is actually being cut to anything the peace corp are actually doing.

Unaddressed in all reporting I've seen is what it actually farkin' did for girls.

Is it a giant feel-good waste of money? A vital and effective effort?

No idea, but it must be good because girls and Obama and bad to end because Trump - that's the level of analysis I've seen presented.

(That the Peace Corps itself presents it as something that builds "awareness" and the like leads me to believe the former of the two alternatives.

"Awareness" is what you build when you can't do anything actually useful.)
