Mr. Trump, who dislikes spending the night away from home and has been adapting to life at the White House, has rarely ventured far from the Executive Mansion or his Mar-a-Lago retreat in Florida during his first 85 days in office. He has not strayed west of the Mississippi River, appearing at public events in only seven states and eschewing trips overseas. He is planning to travel to Wisconsin on Tuesday, and his first international trip is scheduled for next month, when he is to visit Brussels and Italy for meetings with world leaders. Thanks, professor, but remember how Trump went out all over the country for a year and a half making his case before the election? You know what name doesn't appear in this article? Hillary Clinton. Don't think about how she failed to travel to those blue-wall states she lost, how she never made her case to Americans she took for granted.
By contrast, President Barack Obama had made public appearances in nine states and taken three overseas trips by this point in his presidency, and was beginning his fourth journey abroad. And President George W. Bush had stopped in 23 states by mid-April during his first year in office and also visited Canada.
“We are not seeing this president following the norm of going out to the public and making his case in the same way as presidents have for as far back as you want to go,” said James A. McCann, a professor of political science at Purdue University who has studied presidential travel patterns. “Trump is going to his own drummer, as usual. It’s a risky strategy.”
Another word I don't see in this article is "yacht." That's the word I think of when I see the comparison to Barack Obama. I was just reading the Daily Mail article "A picture perfect moment! Barack and Michelle Obama pose on billionaire David Geffen's superyacht during day out with Oprah, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Hanks in French Polynesia/Barack and Michelle Obama were guests on David Geffen's 454ft superyacht Rising Sun on Friday/Oprah, Tom Hanks and Bruce Springsteen were also on board the stunning $300million vessel /The Obamas have been holidaying at the Brando resort in French Polynesia for the past month /Since leaving the White House, they have also visited Palm Springs, Hawaii and toured the Caribbean."
What charming wanderlust, compared to our new "homebody" President.
Top-rated comment at The Daily Mail: "....nothing like hanging out with the poor people....how's your carbon footprint these days Obama?"
I can't get over that word "homebody" in the NYT headline.
1. It's a putdown, but why is it a putdown? The feminist answer is: Staying home, loving home, working within the home are traditionally associated with women, and things associated with women are viewed as inferior. To put "homebody" and "honeymoon" together is, I assert, feminizing. Of course, "honeymoon" is normally used to describe a President's first 100 days, but it's not about traveling. It's about the glow of good opinion that surrounds a new President. The media, especially the NYT, have denied Trump that kind of honeymoon, so it's silly to use that word to refer to Trump. It's only being used here, I infer, because it makes "homebody" sound especially feminine. It's one more way to take a shot at Trump. But there's collateral damage to the feminist cause because it's using the similarity to a woman as an insult.
2. The President's workplace is the White House. A President at the White House is at work. To call him a "homebody" is to act as though he's enjoying the comforts of domesticity. But he's at work. Yes, Trump has a second place, Mar-a-Lago, and he goes there a lot. But it's another work-and-home place. He seems to be working. Is there any news that he's not hard at work? I can understand journalists preferring the visuals and excitement of trips to foreign lands, but that has nothing to do with whether Trump is a "homebody."
ADDED: I publish this post, and I'm about to add some extra words about the use of the phrase "sits out" in the headline, when Meade fixes on a different word, "period." He calls out: "It makes it sound like he got his period."
And that opens up vistas of feminist analysis.

I guess if you consider golf work, then he is (and playing golf and expensive trips are two things he harshly criticized Obama for). He went to Mar A Lago this past weekend without his foreign policy team after he had threatened North Korea.
Awwwww...the ever-vacationing, carbon footprint leaving President Obama is just so cool. He sure does look great living the billionaire life, doesn't he?? It's all for the little people, you know!!!
Well Obama was a rock star so he just did his road trips but had little appetite for actual work
Reporters on the presidential beat resent a "homebody" president because that means they're not getting company-paid trips to follow him to Geneva and Athens and Hong Kong or anywhere exciting.
Both Obama and Clinton to hate on, all in one post. Remind me again what they are currently president of.
Women as inferior isn't anybody's position. Just as men are women inferior.
When did Trump's "honeymoon" start? Seems to me it was over the second the MSM snowflakes realized he was actually going to be president. Obama's honeymoon lasted 8 years and is still going.
Obama fed on the adoration of crowds. So Of course he kept speechifying before the adulation. I don't see that in Trump's personality.
I'm not sure how the optics could be any worse for lefties. Maybe if Tom Steyer showed up on a Jet Ski, crashed into the stern of Geffen's yacht and set fire to the resulting fuel spill.
I've never had the opportunity to avoid Oprah.
Both Obama and Clinton to hate on, all in one post. Remind me again what they are currently president of.
Nothing. Zilch. Nada. A thought to brighten my Monday morning.
But it sounds like somebody got up on the wrong side of History this morning.
"It makes it sound like he got his period."
Yeah, on his honeymoon.
Obama's presidency was a complete and total failure.
THE END
It is a failed attempt to make it seem that Trump is a layabout and is not hard at work. It is halfhearted because no real observer can deny that Trump acts as though he has a hummingbird's heart grafted to his ass. He is clearly the hardest working president we have had in 8 years.

Bush's presidency was a complete and total failure. Obama repaired much of the damage that Bush inflicted on the country. Look at their approval ratings at the end of their presidencies. Look at Trump's approval ratings now. You are living in a fantasy world.
CNN this morning was schizophrenic with one expert trying to track the nuances of DJT's complex strategy to use inscrutable China to do his will to insane Norks using caution like a gem cutter; but all of this only proving Trump is an impulsive child that knows nothing.
and I suppose typically, getting your period on your honeymoon is a bit of a downer.
Obama fed on the adoration of crowds. So Of course he kept speechifying before the adulation. I don't see that in Trump's personality.
Really?! Are you seriously contending that Trump doesn't feed on the adulation of crowds?
This blog has truly become bizarro world.

Genuinely funny.
This is where ARM would like to point out the panic in financial markets a Trump presidency has caused.
"Trump acts as though he has a hummingbird's heart grafted to his ass."
They can do that now?
"And that opens up vistas of feminist analysis."
You have to be careful, opening up feminists' vistas.
The view is different when their knees are not together.
I am Laslo.
Obama was the quintessential jive turkey, who happened to hit the lottery. Now just try to imagine; one day you're pimping on street corners and eating hot-dogs, and the next you're tooling around on AirForce-1 eating domestic caviar (frankfurters).
So, would you, the congenital jive turkey, sit in an Oval Office which constantly screams that you don't have a clue, or would you jump on AF-! and go for a joyride.
Need I say it? President Joyride.

I have never said this but you have said it multiple times. Not sure why are so stupid. I did point out that the P/E ratio was historically high, not sure how you failed to grasp that.
Surprising headline on the front page of the left-leaning Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel this morning: "Trump generating optimism."
Well, maybe not among ARM, Inga, Ritmo, Once Written etc.
But their misery brings me happiness.
Happy Monday!
Doctor Who's series premiere this Saturday had a lesbian puddle as a villain. Don't mess with lesbian puddles.
I guess if you consider golf work
Lefties still haven't figured out Mar-a-Lago isn't a golf course.
One of the Lefties most repeated talking points across the Web is how Trump is bankrupting the country with his travel costs.

I guess all that optimism accounts for the 98,000 jobs that were added last month.

This is funny in so many ways that ARM doesn't understand.
Too much trouble to try to explain it.
Are you seriously contending that Trump doesn't feed on the adulation of crowds?
How many Real Estate Moguls feed on the adulation of crowds?
If Trump fed off crowds, as you suggest (I disagree with that, obviously), then shouldn't he be getting pretty hungry by now?
A reasonable man does not like what CNN did by having an expert admitting DJT uses complex strategy with nuance, but that is what Cuomo went along with this morning Soros needs his paid thugs to demonstrate against CNN before they blow the Narrative.and suspend Cuomo.

You, like all lefties, see financial success as political validation and you want so desperately to have financial markets validate your irrational rants about Trump. This is your pathetic grasp at equivalence.
Lefties still haven't figured out Mar-a-Lago isn't a golf course.
Actually it is a golf club. The course is just at a separate location a couple miles away in West Palm Beach (which Trump went to at least twice over the weekend).
Everyone who runs for president "feeds of the adulation of crowds." That's a given.
The difference with Trump, which you will never understand, is that the adulation is not the whole story. It was with Obama. He was a good fund raiser because he loved to hang with rich people who idolized him as the "magic negro" who had a crease in his pants and no "accent unless he wanted to use one."
Trump is all work ethic, a new phenomenon in Washington,
Former Federal Election Commission chairwoman Ann M. Ravel says that political speech must be controlled on social media. She claimed it was within the purview of the Federal Election Commission to oversee internet political activities, including the airing of political viewpoints.
Actually it is a golf club.
No, it isn't. It's true there is a Trump branded golf club nearby but it is a unique membership from Mar-A-Lago.
Thanks for making my point.
"I can't get over that word "homebody" in the NYT headline."
If you can't use a word to describe a Chick then you shouldn't use it at all.
But I am surprised that the NYT didn't work "wallflower" into the article.
It all feels very 'Prom'.
That is 'Prom'. I did not misspell "Porn."
I am Laslo.
If there is one common thread that runs through the heart of all Americans, it is that of hypocrisy. It's true that Trump plays more golf than Obama. Republicans are hypocritical to not take congnizance of that and their prior objection of Obama's golf outings, and Democrats are hypocritical to suddenly come to the conclusion that there is a proper and decent amount of time to spend on the links and that Trump but not Obama exceeded it. The historical record shows that Eisenhower was a pretty good president, and he played a lot of golf. Playing golf is not a symptom of decadence and should not be an issue held against either men........I'd much rather our President play than boff interns, drink heavily, or take cocaine/amphetamine cocktails to help ease the burden of a weary day.

While I am a moderate, I do understand the left's pride in the fact that the economy has done significantly better under Democrat presidents than Republican ones.

Hear, Hear. In fact we should encourage all presidents to exercise and get out into the outdoors to clear their heads on a regular basis.

I thought I made myself clear but An Unreasoning Man seems not to understand it. So I will say it again in little words that An Unreasoning Man can understand:
Obama bad president. Very bad. Bush not good either but compared to Obama, Churchillian.
Oops, I shifted to big words. Oh well. What I have written I have written.
THE END
The only reason the economy did well under Billy Jeff is that the midterm elections of '94 forced him to move to the center and that the sex scandals consumed time that otherwise would have been spent trying to expand the government and f us over. Better Monica than us.
There is an article in the WaPo this morning about how populist anti-government sentiment is engulfing South America as well. People are repulsed by the corruption of the "elites."
Poor leftists. Fewer and fewer people believe in your God.
The FM radio (not the AM) has gotten even worse since the election. Every song is baldly fuzzy. We have to make the mixes mono again (nothing wrong with mono). Gluten! Leave it alone.
The best political configuration for financial markets is Republican President and Republican Congress. Followed by Democrat President and Republican Congress, then Democrat President and split Congress.
Financial markets prefer in order: Republicans. Gridlock. Democrats.

You realize that this is at odds with the facts, don't you? I mean, you are dealing with facts, aren't you?
No, it isn't. It's true there is a Trump branded golf club nearby but it is a unique membership from Mar-A-Lago.
While it may be true (I am too lazy to look it up) that you can be a member of the golf club even if you are not a member of Mar-A-Lago, your Mar-A-Lago membership includes rights to use the golf course with reciprocal rights at all of Trump's other courses.
So Mar-A-Lago is indeed a golf club.
So Mar-A-Lago is indeed a golf club.
No, it isn't. Reciprocal arrangements are arrangements between two separate clubs. Mar-A-Lago is not a golf club.
Stop digging.
You realize that this is at odds with the facts, don't you?
Citation for your assertion?
Obama played golf on at least 306 days (Golf Digest) in his Presidency--well short of the estimated 1,200 rounds Woodrow Wilson played during his term, or the 800 rounds that Dwight Eisenhower played as POTUS.
Trump has a long way to go. Stop lying.
Pretty sure those Leftists waiting for Obama to lead The Resistance are going to have a long wait. Seriously, the man is going to spend the rest of his life laughing about how easy it was to play those White liberal chumps.
So Mar-A-Lago is indeed a golf club.
Four Pinocchios. Pants on Fire. CNN Breaking News: Fact Check. Snopes: False.

You made a statement, a false statement. Back it up with some tortured argument that ignores the facts or look even more ridiculous.
In the movie Bedazzled, the devil grants the supplicant a wish, but the fulfillment of that wish turns out be horribly worse than he imagined. I'd like to sail around Tahiti in a luxury yacht. Beats a flight on United to Cleveland as a vacation option. But here's the catch: suppose you had to spend every waking hour on that yacht in the company of Oprah and Geffen. I just hope President Obama doesn't compromise his distinguished record by throwing either of those two personages overboard in shark infested waters. That would be unworthy of a Nobel Peace Prize winner.
So, do the O's have SS protection on these overseas jaunts? If so, we the Great American Taxpayer are paying through the nose for it.
This is something that Snopes would label "False" while deliberately missing the point. It is absurd pickiness. ARM is right, its irrelevant whether Mar-a-lago, the residence/club/hotel, is not actually a golf club, as golf is on the menu.
On the other hand, Trump, the golf club owner, does not have to go far out of his way to play golf. Its a bit like hitting the workout room in the White House. The complaint about golf is also absurd pickiness.
Sorry to show my naïveté, but what is a Geffen?
https://pjmedia.com/michaelwalsh/2017/04/16/trumps-first-hundred-days/
You made a statement, a false statement.
Where is your proof I made a false statement?
Throwing them to the sharks would be "a far, far better thing that I do than I have ever done" for Obama.
It would be a radical crack in the system. Imagine the fallout.
I'm waiting for a photo of Trump shooting skeet.
Anybody notice how nasty the lefties are getting as evidence mounts that Trump might actually be able to do this president thing ?

It is absurd pickiness.
I couldn't disagree more. It's fake news perpetuated by the left. They are trying to equate Trump visits to Mar-A-Lago with 'golf' when in fact the visits are working equivalents like Camp David or the Crawford ranch.
When did Obama have time to make all these famous, wealthy friends?
I thought being president was a really tough, time consuming job, but Obama seems to have come away from the office with a bunch of friends he didn't have when he went in to office. And none of them live in Washington DC. And none of them are the average people he read letters from each night.
Anyway, about Trump. I've long advocated that presidents have a travel budget, and that's it. They get to spend what they are given for the year and then have to stay home.
"He has not strayed west of the Mississippi River, appearing at public events in only seven states and eschewing trips overseas. He is planning to travel to Wisconsin on Tuesday, and his first international trip is scheduled for next month..."
The New York Times seems to think that Wisconsin is west of the Mississippi River! And they wonder why people think they are cloistered and out of touch.
Trump had no "honeymoon". It's been hate since day one, world without end, amen.
Yes Trump is working on filling in the swamp with lobbyist and lawyers, blacking out the visitor's logs to the White House and Mar -A-Logo, and managing to get in a round of golf every weekend, oh and ordering "his" army, while eating the best chocolate cake ever, to lunch missiles on Syria-after he told the Russians when the attack would happen so they could clear out. This man knows how to get things done.
It would embarrassing to own a mere 'yacht' these days. Some smarmy guy with a super-yacht would watch you park your boat at the dock and say "Hey! Nice little yacht you got there!" as you walked by.
You might think that hiring an all-midget crew would make your yacht look bigger, but people catch on to that trick pretty quick.
. . . lunch missiles on Syria-after he told the Russians when the attack would happen so they could clear out. This man knows how to get things done.

We seem to have reached the point where Trump must literally kill random Russians to convince roesch/voltaire that he is not in Putin's pocket.

I don't think Obama has friends; these are just celebrities feeding off each others' celebrity.

No, but if you are going to bomb an empty airfield maybe you should some cheaper bombs.
That also about playing golf. Whom the President plays golf with matters. Eisenhower tended to play with "titans of industry" and presumably the chit-chat included matters not incident to golf.
Obama seemed to play with a random selection of professional athletes rounded up by White House staff for that day.
Too bad Sheryl Crow wasn't present. She could have talked the group into reversing the environmental damage of their trip by limiting themselves to one square of toilet paper per dump. It would have been a feel-good moment for all involved.
Is homebody an insult? I don't hear it like that.
Did you know that one of the chief indicators of the deadly sin of acedia is the driving desire to flit about and see what everyone else is up to?
I don't think Sheryl Crow is that stupid. She learned a lesson - I hope - about not getting sarcastic with the media.
The New York Times seems to think that Wisconsin is west of the Mississippi River! And they wonder why people think they are cloistered and out of touch.
Good one. :)
The best evidence for the continuing presence of racism in Our Beloved Country is the complete free pass Obama was granted by the media, led by the press. Certainly the worst President since 1856, beating some stiff competition, including his two predecessors. We need to have a Constitutional Convention after several years of stiff debate and reestablish the Republic before the corrupt mess we have created ends in Fascism.
ARM,
Not to be pedantic but they were not bombs, they were cruise missiles.
In any event, they were 25 or so years old and ready for the scrap heap. value of the missiles was close was close to nil. It is a cheap way to get rid of them.

The media needs to fill various empty spaces (air time, columns of news print) 24-7 and that filling must be anti-Trump 24-7. And it must attract reader/viewers. Reversals of image help in this bizarre program. So Trump the philandering man turns into Trump the homebody; Trump-the-planet-destroyer according to the LA Times is Trump the-do-nothing according to Wapo (Where democracy dies in darkness.)
The five month hatefest by the media has had exactly the same result as it had in the campaign - at the end of the day Trump is rising in the polls.
He is rising because:
Illegal immigration is falling, Trump has his cabinet and his Supreme Court nominee, the economy is improving (there are hiring signs everywhere in Milwaukee), there is a new foreign policy - (e.g., TPP is gone but Trump negotiated a giant coal sale to China and secured some kind of co-operation on North Korea, NAFTA is being renegotiated, shale oil has not died in the darkness of EPA/trade regulations, Assad and Afghanistan see that US has power and will use it, NATO partners are increasing their military strength through spending).
The media and the Democrats would not have let one things of these happen. And yet these initiatives are all so dangerously popular that the media-Dems also can't acknowledge that they have happened. For the left still hates the American worker and hates anything that contributes to American prosperity and public safety. So the concentration on micro-issues, on today's anti-Trump fashion, on lefty fads, on a tone of spite, malice, and gossip, on being petty and calling it being anti-fascist. And it's working as well as it worked in the campaign and the Dems think it's working just as they did for the whole campaign. And they can't get over it because a big disappointment can only be exorcised by involvement with something else equally big. "The Resistance" doesn't do the job because at bottom it's just mean-girl-pettiness.
"It makes it sound like he got his period."
That was my first reaction after reading the headline but before the rest of your post.
ARM: "No, but if you are going to bomb an empty airfield maybe you should some cheaper bombs."
I guess those aircraft that were hit don't count.
Unexpectedly.
By contrast, President Barack Obama had made public appearances in nine states and taken three overseas trips by this point in his presidency, and was beginning his fourth journey abroad. And President George W. Bush had stopped in 23 states by mid-April during his first year in office and also visited Canada.
Here's what I don't get. I keep seeing that so far, Trump has spent a lot more money on vacations than Obama ever did. I guess they are counting his weekend trips to Florida as vacations. But what I'd like to see is, at this point in their presidencies, who has spent more on travel? Considering Obama was already overseas 3 times and in 9 different states, I wouldn't be surprised if it was Obama.
Trump hasn't started WWIII or used nukes, as many liberals insisted he would, so he must be a wussy homebody on her period. Whenever I read these nonsensical articles from the NY Times or HuffPost I always think about the wise ass twenty somethings who are writing them. Journalists these days can not be taken seriously.
@eric:
Considering Obama was already overseas 3 times and in 9 different states, I wouldn't be surprised if it was Obama.
I'd be happy if all this stupid bean counting stopped all together. We have to suffer through it after every change of presidency, and it's nothing but a cheap way for partisans to swing mud at one another. Bush spent too much time at Crawford; Obama spent too much time on golf courses. Blah blah blah.
The New York Times seems to think that Wisconsin is west of the Mississippi River!
No wonder Hillary couldn't find it.
Late to the yacht party, but this is where the early planning for the Oprah campaign and presidency is happening. Which, as y'all know and I'm sure gratefully acknowledge, yours truly first announced months ago.
Obama liked (and likes) to travel to get his fragile ego stroked by all his sycophants.
When Trump travels he will mostly face hostile demonstrations. Why bother?
Plus, as Ann says, the White House IS where he works.
Interestingly, Stovall of S&P Capital IQ also took a look at the how the stock market does depending upon who controls Congress.
When Stovall sliced and diced the data that way since World War II, the best performance was when the nation had a Republican president with a Republican-controlled Congress.
That was followed closely by a Democratic president facing a Republican Congress or split Congress.
That's Sam Stovall, btw..
