Trump's Florida rally...

1. ... begins with the First Lady leading the group in The Lord's Prayer. I can't think of the last time I've heard The Lord's Prayer at a rally.

2. "I didn't know that Melania was going to be saying The Lord's Prayer, but I thought that was very beautiful," Trump begins.

3. "I want to speak with you without the filter of the fake news."

4. "Nothing can be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle." Trump quotes Thomas Jefferson. Is that a real Jefferson quote? Yes! Thomas Jefferson to John Norvell, 14 June 1807:
To your request of my opinion of the manner in which a newspaper should be conducted, so as to be most useful, I should answer, "by restraining it to true facts & sound principles only." Yet I fear such a paper would find few subscribers. It is a melancholy truth, that a suppression of the press could not more compleatly deprive the nation of it's benefits, than is done by it's abandoned prostitution to falsehood. Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle. The real extent of this state of misinformation is known only to those who are in situations to confront facts within their knolege with the lies of the day. I really look with commiseration over the great body of my fellow citizens, who, reading newspapers, live & die in the belief, that they have known something of what has been passing in the world in their time; whereas the accounts they have read in newspapers are just as true a history of any other period of the world as of the present, except that the real names of the day are affixed to their fables. General facts may indeed be collected from them, such as that Europe is now at war, that Bonaparte has been a successful warrior, that he has subjected a great portion of Europe to his will, &c., &c.; but no details can be relied on. I will add, that the man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them; inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods & errors. He who reads nothing will still learn the great facts, and the details are all false.
5. "Not one media network will show the crowd," Trump taunts, which gets at least Fox News to pan around the crowd. Trump's wrong again!

6. The EPA, under Obama, was "clogging up the veins of our country."

7. "Bring this guy up here. Come on! Hop over the fence!" An awestruck guy in a Donald Trump shirt (and shorts) comes up on the stage. He hugs Trump (even though Trump just said he was afraid the guy was going to kiss him), and Trump gives him the microphone and he speaks for a moment. He says he knew Trump was going to keep his promises. Trump shakes his hand, points at him, and says: "A star is born!"

8. Trump lets the people know that he was watching them on TV as they were waiting on line. He heard the interviews with particular individuals, he says, and he recognizes them in the audience. Trump, the TV personality, knows them from TV.

9. He's reading the statute that he relied on for his immigration order, the statute that the 9th Circuit didn't even cite — as he points out — and he pauses in the middle to critique the statute for saying only "he" (referring to the President) instead of "he or she." He calls the statute "not politically correct," then digresses from the digression to announce (once again) that in the election he did very well with women.

10. Excellent political theater. That's it for now from me.

Impeachment isn't the only way. Section 4 of the 25th amendment provides a process for removing from office a president "unable" to carry out his duties.

What have you guys got against President Pence? You're worried you won't like him as much as President Bannon?

Not interested at all in a Pence presidency. I would have to consider him part of the coupe. You don't seem to get the only people we trust less than democrats are the GOPe. Democrats are enemies, most dc republicans are traitors.

Removing the ban on excluding pre-existing conditions

The existence of chronic, diagnosable medical conditions makes the economics of health care really difficult, because the insurance model doesn't make sense. That's why Obamacare - the best the Democrats could do, with both houses of Congress and an incredibly popular president - is in an unrecoverable death spiral. You can run a business that says, "in exchange for a reasonable monthly payment, we will guarantee you a certain amount of money in the unlikely event that something terrible happens to your car or house". You can't run a business that says, "in exchange for a reasonable monthly payment, we will guarantee you an unlimited amount of money in the absolutely certain event that you keep having the medical condition you've already been diagnosed with."

I don't know about the Heritage Foundation that exists only in your tiny little deluded rage-filled mind, but here in the real world, that's just a stupid bit of spin Obama liked to throw around when he was in his "basically I'm sort of like Reagan" phase.

And speaking of Heritage and 1993, when you bring it up, I hear, "Cling to the past, be a partisan, and focus more on party squabbles than the future."

You have to love all the "good advice" Trump get from all his critics advising him to stop taking his message directly to the people rather than letting the media filter it first.

Gadfly- Trump is holding the rallies because it is a necessary thing to do to advance his agenda. He could request network time to address the nation, but I suspect he might well have done so and been turned down by all but the cable news networks. In that case, it makes far more sense to do a rally and force the news channels to cover that, if they still call themselves news channels. I think he is long since done trying it the conventional way- it simply isn't worth it.

exiledonmainstreet, green-eyed devil said...

I want to believe this and I saw a way forward with it during the election. But since then certain things have bothered me, mostly his lack of focus and difficulty in proving that he can substantially change things that we're on board with changing. We also are not comfortable with his instinctive attacks against the independent judiciary or the media. An attack or two against this outlet he considers unfair or that is fine, but he seems to make a very angry unfocused crusade out of believing that he can destroy/attack entire networks or even the media as a whole. I can't believe that would come across as feasible. Every president has enough power to shape reality and not just respond to it, but his inconsistency is disconcerting. He just seems to change his mind way too often for us to trust that there is a solid direction at all. And his micromanaging and installation of proudly ambitious mini-disrupters with fiefdoms in their own right seems especially difficult. Steve Bannon doesn't have the qualifications to head NSC, he needs to have been more than an officer for that, but Trump trusts him and has trouble taking advice from others and seems to have bought into Bannon's vision that America is destined to become the next Holy Roman Empire to do battle with Islam. I think that's dangerous and as much a distraction as all the wars these guys complained that their predecessors were irresponsible in getting us into. And Trump should realize that we're not Europe. Europe has its own problems and is justified in responding to them in a much more draconian and consuming way to border control than I think serves us any good.

I'm sure there's much more that I can prattle on about but it's fascinating that despite all this the Washington machine is so entrenched that we simply found common cause around a much more fundamental and simultaneously conservative and progressive value: That screwing over the working class was not only unfair, but creating untenable disruption/chaos in American society and had to be ended.

Oh well, I guess we'll solve this whole thing another night.

Have a good one -

Here are a couple of others on my list.

"The fat Russian agent was cornering all the foreign refugees in turn and explaining plausibly that this whole affair was an Anarchist plot. I watched him with some interest, for it was the first time that I had seen a person whose profession was telling lies—unless one counts journalists."
--George Orwell, "Homage to Catalonia" (1938)

"Early in life I have noticed that no event is ever correctly reported in a newspaper, but in Spain, for the first time, I saw newspaper reports which did not bear any relation to the facts, not even the relationship which is implied in an ordinary lie. I saw great battles reported where there had been no fighting, and complete silence where hundreds of men had been killed. I saw troops who had fought bravely denounced as cowards and traitors, and others who had never seen a shot fired hailed as the heroes of imaginary victories; and I saw newspapers in London retailing these lies and eager intellectuals building emotional superstructures over events that had never happened. I saw, in fact, history being written not in terms of what happened but of what ought to have happened according to various ‘party lines’."

so the only fig-leaf they have left with which to shore up their fragile, battered psyches, is to fantasize that some "white-knight" SJW champion will come along and take him out, for the good of the country, or something... These people are having some serious mental issues over this election, and the only thing keeping them from slitting their own throats at this point is this sad, desperate fantasy.

Bernie sold out to Clinton....CLINTON!

Let me explain how politics works to the amateurs and other socially handicapped people.

You don't burn bridges, bite the hand that feeds you, or cut off your nose to spite your face.

There's no reason on earth to presume that Sanders thought Trump was a better candidate for him to support than Clinton. Trump campaigned on a message of bigotry (whether anyone agrees or not that was the impact), mendacity and instability, and had a record of supporting more oligarchs and plutocrats to buy off for his cause. Trump's cabinet picks alone are reason enough for no Democrat to have anything to do with him, let alone Sanders. And his erratic performance has tested most Republicans.

If you don't think that's reason enough for Bernie Sanders or anyone who got to run in the Democratic primary and rally that many millions of votes to support his opponent, then you know less than the guy who runs for town dog catcher and really don't have any business opining in a way people can take seriously about basic political reality in the U.S.

Seems this would be a good journalism project for a high school junior. retrieve the transcripts of 3 press briefings by year going back to beginning of Eisenhower's term and determine which asked adversarial questions, perhaps measuring aggression in the questions. e.g. "Mr. Kennedy have you and Jackie stopped you bisexual trysts yet? How long did it take your Gonorrhea to clear up?" Mr. Johnson.. Mr.. Nixon.. etc. Plot them year over year to see the trends from one side to the other and arguably who got the best press vice most competitive press (as would like to drive him out of office), especially when examined in the light of "facts" illuminated by history. Unlike almost everyone else in the 18th century, Jefferson and Thomas Paine wrote in a contemporary (to us) style.

The people who believe Trump keeps his promises are less perceptive than those who distrust the media.

Many of those people belong to both camps.

And those 4 senators will have to deal with their own constituents in Arizona, South Carolina, Texas, and Kentucky — states that voted last November for Trump, respectively, 48.1%, 54.9%, 52.6%, and 62.5%.

I noticed that the First Lady used the Book of Common Prayer/Protestant version of the Lord's Prayer, as opposed to the King James/Presbyterian, or Roman Catholic version. This could split the Religious Right./sarc

About your comment just above; you aren't really addressing that to me, are you? Because I expect that I have been more avidly pro-gun rights, for much longer, than Donald Trump. I am fairly certain that I have spent thousands of hours more in the field hunting with a firearm than Trump.

And very much unlike me, Trump supported the federal assault weapons ban in the 1990's. I believe firmly in the validity and permanence of Heller and MacDonald. Trump now seems to like the decisions as well, but as a more recent convert.

If you are attacking me on a gun rights issue, I have to ask; why?

Did I mention Trump?
