Trump is trying to figure out who's going to run against him in 2020.

It's really hard to figure out.*
Trump’s chief strategist, Steve Bannon, asked consultants to scour the backgrounds of four outspoken Democrats — Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, two sources close to the administration said....

The White House believes both Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren are “too old” to mount a serious campaign three years from now, sources said....

“Elizabeth Warren is 100 years old....” the second source said....
She's 67.
Trump’s political team is also counting out [NY Governor Andrew] Cuomo and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, because they’ve been tainted by corruption probes....

[Kirsten] Gillibrand, 50, has been raising her profile thanks to a series of “no” votes on Trump’s Cabinet picks, but White House officials view her as “too young” and believe she lacks the network in the party to run a nationwide campaign, the sources said.
So 67 is too old and 50 is too young. Noted.

* I'm steeling myself for all the born-lame jokes about how hard it is to see in 2020. The headline at the link is "Trump’s White House eyes potential foes in 2020 election." Did they write "eyes" because it will be 2020? No 20/20 jokes. I'm pre-banning them. It's bad enough to have to plunge back into another campaign season.

Which would include Obama holdovers. Unlike the congressional Republicans -- whose first priority is always the next election, starting the evening of the last one -- I don't see Trump as prioritizing any re-election. Trump wants to get things done NOW. He wants to fix things -- as he thinks needs fixing -- and then he wants to be able to say, "Job done. Did it better and faster than anyone. I'm out." Trump is not a lifer -- unlike some people (whisper Hillary) who will still be scratching for power 30 years after she's in a coffin in the ground.

The Republicans are in a Power Play and the Dems think they just scored a short-hand goal with this Ninth Circuit outrage. I talk to Trump voters from the Midwest daily. I can assure you all, the Dems did not score a shorthanded goal. They simply high-sticked Trump without getting caught. They are in deep, deep trouble and they haven't really figured that out yet.

So let them send Warren, or Franken, or that dumbass Corey Booker out on the ice. They're all headed for the penalty box and soon it will be six-on-zero.

Meanwhile, it doesn't matter who runs as GOP nominee if Congress does not repeal ObamaCare as they promised again and again to do, and was, next to the Supreme Court, probably the issue that got the Republicans elected. If they do not repeal ObamaCare, they are all toast in 2020 -- and quite possibly the party dissolved because no one will ever trust them again (and frankly, we don't trust them now).

Congress won't be repealing Obamacare. Now they are calling it the "repair". Nor will the Iran Nuclear deal be rescinded. Nor will Trump get that Wall built. Nor will Trump stand up to the Chinese, he already agreed to honor the One China Policy. Nor will he put the US Embassy in Jerusalem. The only thing Trump will follow through on is to remove all the sanctions on the Russians. Trump won't make it to 2020.

The key to reelection for Trump is avoiding a primary challenger. Looking back as far back as 1944, incumbents with primary challengers either decided not to run (Truman, Johnson '68) or lost in the general election (Ford, Carter, GHW). The rest, who didn't face a primary challenger. won (Roosevelt, Truman '48, Eisenhower, Johnson '64, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, GW, Obama). No exceptions. The other key, of course, is living (Roosevelt, Kennedy).

I feel like this is bait for Elizabeth Warren. I think Trump wants to bait her and other Dems to talking about these comments. Going after Trump for Calling Elizabeth Warren too old, especially because Trump is older than her, might seem good to the Dem Strategists and maybe even the true believer dems, but I'm guessing it doesn't play well overall. Because then people are still talking about how old she is.

I don't think Elizabeth Warren is too old, or will be too old to run for president in 3 years, but if you are talking about it someone people might start thinking she is, and getting in the vein of Scott Adams, many might start subconsciously feeling she is.

A 17 year window between "uncomfortably young" and "uncomfortably old" seems reasonable for Presidential contenders, and yes I agree on 50-67. Obama was a little younger. Reagan was a little older.

Gillibrand has been a Senatorial nonentity and I can see her campaign's persecution of D'Souza counting against her as well. Warren won't play well outside the northeast.

I worry about Hickenlooper. In Colorado he is very good at pretending to be the business-friendly moderate, with the Reasonable Gun Control (or is it Gun Safety now?) and with Our Values, all that treacly pablum that the nice white people like.

It is generally a bad idea to nominate a senator. I'm not saying they can't win - after this election I'm not saying that anyone can't win - but it is generally a bad idea.

Gillibrand is a nondescript nobody that got to the senate because when Hillary became Sec of State they wanted another woman, they wanted someone who wasn't an airhead like Caroline Kennedy, and they wanted someone not under pending indictment. This being New York, that last part is key. Also, she was nominated to the position by Governor Paterson, who was doing his best to be despised by all political players in the state. I remember one of her ads that she felt necessary despite the election being a foregone conclusion where she basically said that if women were in charge there would not be any problems. For some reason I don't think that is going to resonate with Trump voters. She's also a phony; she went from gun rights advocate to anti-gunner in the time she got the nod. She may not be too young to run, but her accomplishments are nil. Of course, that's what the Democrats tend to nominate so, sure, why not.

“Elizabeth Warren is 100 years old....” the second source said.... She's 67.

They want her to run. They are trying to make her run by saying she won't run. And they're trying to make her mad. It's not ageism (Trump is 70) but the implicit sexism. They are attacking her personally, as a woman.

It's reverse psychology. They hope and pray she's the candidate.

I think Warren would be a spectacularly bad candidate. But I thought the same thing about Bernie and Donnie. What do I know!

Anyway, it's a pointless and stupid thing to worry about. It's a re-election campaign. People always vote on the performance of the candidate.

Good economy? Trump wins.

Bad economy? Trump loses.

The only reason to even think about re-election now is because you are worried that Trump is going to be stymied and do badly as a president. Good economy, it's a cake walk. Bad economy? He's in for a fight, regardless of the candidate.

Bannon is trying to activate Warren and get her fighting mad.

But why worry about it unless the economy is an issue?

Ergo, Trump is worried about his ability to do this job. That's why he's already thinking about the next campaign.

p.s. Trump is a very negative and critical thinker. "Prepare for the worst, hope for the best." Probably a better assessment is that he has no idea what the next four years will bring. But he's prepping for bad times ahead.

"WASHINGTON
The FBI and five other law enforcement and intelligence agencies have collaborated for months in an investigation into Russian attempts to influence the November election, including whether money from the Kremlin covertly aided President-elect Donald Trump, two people familiar with the matter said.

The agencies involved in the inquiry are the FBI, the CIA, the National Security Agency, the Justice Department, the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network and representatives of the director of national intelligence, the sources said.

Investigators are examining how money may have moved from the Kremlin to covertly help Trump win, the two sources said. One of the allegations involves whether a system for routinely paying thousands of Russian-American pensioners may have been used to pay some email hackers in the United States or to supply money to intermediaries who would then pay the hackers, the two sources said."

Or, it assumes that that is exactly what will happen. In fact the DJT folks may be expecting it to happen. Therefore, it makes sense to start some FBI investigations or use other arms of the government to knock out the competition.

DJT correctly states that he's smart to use every advantage the of the government that is accessible to him. That used to mean his not paying taxes because he lost other people's money that was lent to him. Now, he'd be smart to use the gov to go after his potential adversaries. "A New Jersey congressman says a rarely invoked 1924 law could be used to examine President Donald Trump’s tax returns for possible conflicts of interest and Constitutional violations.

Rep. Bill Pascrell, a Democrat who serves on the Ways and Means Committee, has asked the committee’s chairman, Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, to order the Treasury Department to provide tax returns to the committee. Brady’s office did not respond to a request for comment Friday.

After privately examining returns — Pascrell is seeking 10 years’ worth — the committee could decide to share them with the full House, which would in effect make them public. The 1924 law gives congressional committees that set tax policy the power to examine tax returns. It was used in 1974 when Congress looked at President Richard Nixon’s returns, and in 2014 when the Ways and Means Committee released confidential tax information as part of its investigation into the Internal Revenue Service’s handling of applications for nonprofit status."

After Sessions goes through the voter rolls and eliminates the illegal voters from most of the states democrats will never be competitive in their current form. Have fun winning California, New York, and Illinois by 100 million votes. Keep shuffling illegals to the polls in your deep blue states. It will never win a national election. 30 red states = 60 senators and 300+ electoral votes for the foreseeable future.

Not that there is any evidence, but we have to have an investigation to find evidence. That plays well with Trump's base. Which, BTW, I'm not one of. I voted for him because I opposed the other major candidate. Not that my vote in NY really meant anything. Well, it did for congresscritter.

"That way the job creators will be freed from taxes and regulations, therefore normal, real Americans will benefit because the federal gov will have bigger deficits and the job creators will have more dough with fewer restraints re the environment and worker rights/safety/benefits.

Got it.

Ach,

It's cool if you're in favor of the job creator tax and regulation cuts. Like you, I'm sure that will lower the deficit and make life better for normal folks. If, by some fluke, it doesn't work out this way for normal folks: F those losers who are normal in this country. If they worked harder and/or were smarter, they'd be a job creator.

And, re the deficit, the Laffer Curve got one thing wrong, there's never a tax rate that is so low that it doesn't result in increasing tax collection, as long as we're talking about taxes on the job creators.

"The D-party has a right wing? Who? Jim Webb..."

Webb? Did somebody say Jim Webb?

Former Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) on Sunday said the Democratic Party has moved "very far to the left" over the past five or six years.

Webb said the Democratic Party's message has "been shaped toward identity politics"
"And they've lost the key part of their base," he said.

Webb said the Democrats haven't done the kind of "self reflection" they needed starting in 2010.

"You've lost white working people. You've lost flyover land, and you saw in this election what happens when people get frustrated enough that they say, 'I'm not going to take this,'" he said.

"There is an aristocracy now that pervades American politics. It's got to be broken somehow in both parties, and I think that's what the Trump message was that echoed so strongly in these flyover communities."

Robert Cook said...

"She is worse that Hillary in one way: While Hillary owes her political fortune to signing a marriage license, Warren launched hers from Harvard -- a position she got by ticking a box."

Do you have proof Warren did not believe she had the blood of Indigenous Americans in her? Do you have proof she doesn't? More important, do you have proof she got her job at Harvard because of her ticking a box indicating her disputed heritage? (I have not read extensively on this matter, so perhaps there is a smoking gun or an admission by her that she lied. If so, I'd appreciate being directed to such information.)

I am disappointed in Warren's stumping for the corrupt, war-mongering, deep state-serving Hillary, but she is one of the few members of Congress visibly trying to compel the oligarchs to explain and justify their crimes against the American people. Until she gives me reason to utterly dismiss her, I will continue to admire her for her dedication to pinning down these parasitic scum in our financial system who are destroying the world.

From CNN --

Harvard Law School in the 1990s touted Warren, then a professor in Cambridge, as being "Native American." They singled her out, Warren later acknowledged, because she had listed herself as a minority in an Association of American Law Schools directory. Critics note that she had not done that in her student applications and during her time as a teacher at the University of Texas.
Warren maintains she never furthered her career by using her heritage to gain advantage.

Brando said...

I see Warren as the Ted Cruz of her party--beloved by a segment of the base, toxic to the rest of the country, smart yet not likely to get any nomination. Maybe she'll run to get her "message" out more, but I don't think she'd expect to get the nomination.

My guess is they'll nominate someone none of us is even thinking about now.

And 2020 is way too far off to discuss now. The country could be very different then.

Brando said...

You're wasting your time. Anyone who likes Warren won't care about that, or even believe she was untruthful. That sort of thing only matters to those of us who already didn't like her.

MaxedOutMama said...

I don't think Warren is a good candidate, but her age is not really a factor. Look at this election!!!

I think Trump will be too old for a second term, so the real question will be about the GOP candidate.

And I don't care. I really don't. It's stupid to try to pick candidates this far in advance, and it's stupid to try to pick candidates from the top down. I agree with the first commenter - 2016 should have taught both parties a lesson, but apparently it's one that the political apparatchiks haven't learned. CAN they learn anything? Are they capable of incorporating new data into their mental map and modifying their behavior? Right now these people seem increasingly like HAL 9000 in "2001".

If Trump could, he should try to shut these people up and get the focus back on governance. But I doubt anyone can. Gosh, I despise them all. I don't see what purpose they serve.

Robert Cook,

You've had several responses but I wanted to address this:

"More important, do you have proof she got her job at Harvard because of her ticking a box indicating her disputed heritage?"

No, and I don't exactly believe that. I'd disagree with Darrell that she never would have been considered without it. She was already a law professor at a fine school. A senior hire, and a jump in prestige, depend much less on where your degree comes from than on scholarship in your earlier appointments, and hers was substantial.

However: Once she had reached the level of success where she was in the running for a Harvard professorship, would it have given her an edge over similarly qualified applicants if the committee read her application and noticed she belonged to a historically disadvantaged minority group? Would she have known it would?

I can't prove a thing, but she would have been extremely naive not to know. People who play the career game that well are not naive, and I don't believe Senator Warren is naive.

If you sincerely believed your grandmother's great-grandmother was of a historically persecuted minority group, would you check that box? Knowing the intent was to give a fair shake to people who have had a tougher climb due to the legacy of that persecution? I don't presume to know you, but I'm going to guess you wouldn't.

Brando said...

"I don't think Warren is a good candidate, but her age is not really a factor. Look at this election!!!"

You're right about age not being a factor. Reagan broke that barrier, showing that if you come across youthful and healthy enough (and he was in solid shape at that point) no one will care.

"Except I'll bet the Native American identity contingent still won't be happy about it. But they always seem to get short shrift in the political arena unless they can be used to stir the pot for one of the Left's sacred cows - like the DAPL."

Politically speaking they tend to be outweighed by the large number of "oh I'm about one 64th Indian so don't call me white!" people you tend to find a lot in college.

My wife is actually part Cherokee (her father was born and raised on the reservation but could pass for white) and was pretty peeved by Warren's claims, which sort of disproves my theory, but I get the feeling that in actual voting politics will outweigh these things, as they usually do.

Would Cook change his mind if he genuinely agreed that Warren padded her racial background to advance her career?

Robert Cook said...

"Robert Cooke said: 'Do you have proof Warren did not believe she had the blood of Indigenous Americans in her?'

"Leftie logic on display."

No, she claimed, I believe, that it had been family lore that they had the blood of Indigenous Americans in their family line. Do you know this isn't true? If you had been told something about your family history while growing up, would you have decided to research it yourself to find out if it was true or not? I have marginal (or less) interest in my family ancestry--unlike my father, who spent decades looking into it--and I can certainly imagine accepting family stories about our heritage without bothering to look into any of them.

Now, if Warren completely lied and knew all along she had no native ancestry, that's extremely disappointing.
