"How Evan McMullin Could Win Utah And The Presidency/It’s unlikely, but far from impossible" (FiveThirtyEight).
I don't have the option of voting for Evan McMullin. The ballot I'll be marking here in Wisconsin looks like this:
3 of those names I'm completely unfamiliar with. Anyway... we could write in McMullin.

"Trump doesn’t hate women. He just doesn't naturally think like a woman."
A little too much biological just-so stories but a nice counternarrative Radio Free NJ, site cited by Derb this week.
Althouse take on the thing would be interesting.
I already voted for Trump. I couldn't wait any longer.
In a side note, the governor of Nebraska's wife not only will vote for Hillary she has given the Clinton campaign serious money. See, OWH.
Trump.
Johnson-Weld! Vote for the ticket that sounds like a marriage ceremony!
Eric Haas.
That's who I voted for in 1964. My first election.
It wasn't very satisfying.
I'm going to vote for down ballot republicans I might not usually vote for. I can't have Hillary with control of the house and the senate.
'{Obama] is the greatest thing to happen to black America since Martin Luther King first landed on the moon." RFNJ
All the good lines don't follow the narrative, I've noticed.
Writing in McMullin's name when he's not on the ballot is a wasted vote. Might as well write your ideal choice for POTUS.
My guess is that Althouse will close her eyes (holding the nose doesn't apply in her case) and vote HRC. Bad as HRC is, Trump is worse.
Voting for Johnson in Wisconsin would only make sense if he were higher in the polls.
And his name is McMuffin.
"Anyway... we could write in McMullin"
Two comments. First, this would not help him in any way. Second, "we?"
Rocky is a cool name
How did it happen that a woman named Monica Moorehead got on the ballot and not single joke has been directed at her? What America needs is Moorehead and who better than Monica to give us Moorehead.
The right answer is vote Trump. God knows what women will do. It's so feelings based.
Althouse has to get over to the mostly empty comments section of RFNJ and argue. Who wouldn't pay to see that.
Why not write in Smegma, or whatever the latest rodent's name is?
As a woman I'm supposed to be all up in arms about Trump Dawg, but the weakileaks about how Hillary's people operate worry me on a much deeper level.
What to do...
I can already tell... it's going to be a slow news decade.
There's only so much Hillary that a country can take.
Back to a life of playing scrabble, watching soap operas, making lemonade... You know, the important things for America.
Write in Sacagawea. We've already got the coin.
As a woman I'm supposed to be all up in arms about Trump Dawg, but the weakileaks about how Hillary's people operate worry me on a much deeper level.
Misogynist!
I vote the straight Delta ticket. At last a President that will get us there on time.
why not evan Mcullin?Because no one ever heard of the guy. He wasn't part of the primary process, and he has less name recognition than Gary Johnson, who has none.
What to do about the behavior of men. That's the nation's problem.
Let's consult academe.
if you are discussing writing in candidates, isnt' any name as good as another? So why settle for Evan McMullin. Go big - Flash Gordon! He's the savior of the universe. and he'll save every one of us.
Why shouldnt flash Gordon be president?
Could a Trump romantic comedy be done?
We'd have to find the perfect woman. Probably she'd be amazing.
There was Pretty Woman, but I don't see Trump in it.
At first glance I thought it said Monica Motorhead.
I would definitely vote President Motorhead without knowing anything else about her.
Dang. Back to the binary.
I think Obama has weoponized the federal government in an attempt to finish off the GOP.
That is his desired legacy.
IRS, DOJ, FBI......all tainted.
Hillary was operating in stealth mode because it was an approved m.o. at the top.
Obama has more secrets than the clintons have forgotten.
Hillary and Bill in the WH will continue their unsavory and secret ways.
I was a nevertrumper at first.
I will be voting for Trump. If you care about this country so should you.
This is the case of better the devil you don't know than the one you know.
It's a shitty choice to have to make, but it's binary. Don't try to fool yourself that it's not.
Electing Hillary is our only hope... for the redemption and salvation of men!
After all, castration's not for everybody. Confess your male privilege sins to Hillary and all will be forgiven.
Gropers, rapists, sexists, frat boys... get in line. Your time has come.
Everyone else, just we'll come for you later.
Maybe go at it the other way. What romantic comedy would have Hillary as the romantic interest.
You could go completely dysfunctional and do Trump and Hillary together. Leadership joins with absolute corruption and greed. That's more of an armageddon comedy.
"
Gropers, rapists, sexists, frat boys... get in line. Your time has come. "
Except of course for the biggest groper of all. Her husband. ANy one who accuses him is trailer trash, and anyone who says otherwise is part of a vast right wing conspiracy.
Feminism wants a castrated female, not a castrated male.
The castrated male is a side-effect.
Why would I want a neo-con war hawk with no important insight on anything?
I can already tell... it's going to be a slow news decade.
She's going to use Obama's "EVERYTHING IS A CRISIS!" nonsense to try and force legislation thru without anybody thinking about how bad an idea almost all of it is.
Surely I'm not the only one who has noticed that skyrocketing premiums and deductibles are no longer crises...
Except of course for the biggest groper of all. Her husband.
Using intimate relationships to access power over others and everything else that neither you nor anyone else deserves is what makes her the best feminist of all!
"Not a smidgen of corruption"
"If you like your plan you can keep your plan"
If McMullin got enough write in votes to matter, every one of them would be rejected by election judges as too vague as to intent. The voters might have meant some other McMullin.
The choice is Clinton or Trump.
"try and force legislation thru without anybody thinking about how bad an idea almost all of it is. "
Legislation implies Congress. Congress will be ignored and the country will be run (into the ground) by EO.
Dare them to try to impeach her !
Trump still might win. If not we are screwed. ee cummings had things to say about it.
My prediction is that Althouse will write in Bob Dylan.

If enough people vote for Trump, you won't have Hillary! But by all means vote straight R ticket. However, I'm skeptical about how much they can do under a President HRC. You really need to vote for Trump. Everyone here needs to vote for Trump.
Ann, the problem with you voting for some Blinkin nonentity, aside from the shame of your abetting his subverting the electoral system, is that it will not count. Your vote will be ignored. Your voice will be ignored! And as we all know, you'd rather pull a train at a Hell's Angels AIDS benefit, while eating egg sandwiches, than be ignored.
Go on, vote for Trump. Be a bad girl. You know you want to.
BTW it seems contemptible to me that you use the royal we and presume, or insist, that Meade will vote with you. You really diminish him in this way. You've made him into an appendage.
Ha! You know what you should do, Ann. Find out who Bob Dylan is voting for. He didn't endorse Obama, you know.
@Althouse, since you're so fond of giving the rest of us homework assignments, here's an assignment for you.
Part 1: Under Wisconsin election laws, how accurate does the spelling of McMullin's name have to be? If one misspells his first name as "Even" or his last name as "MacMullin," "McMullen," or "McMulin," will those be allowed to count for Evan McMullen?
Part 2: What about a vice presidential candidate? Under the Twelfth Amendment the electoral college casts separate ballots for president and for vice president. If McMullin wins members, does he have a VP candidate for his electors to vote for? Or do his electors vote their conscience?
Althouse has kept herself purposely ignorant. She wants to vote for Hillary. But she knows enough to know she will be flushing her soul down a toilet to do it.
Oh the agony! I will at least give you credit for letting everyone see the inner workings of a female mind at work.
Will she take the easy route and do what all the other professors do? Will she actually go inform herself and make an informed decision? Will she vote for a woman who attacked her husbands victims and uses women as a shield for her crimes?
I don't think Ann wants to think about it much. She was born into freedom and never had to do anything for it.
"I am McLovin."
Write-in votes usually fail, at least on paper ballots, because people don't check the box next to the name they write in.
LOL.
Perhaps we have to elect this Trump to find out what's in this Trump?
Perhaps we have to elect this Trump to find out what's in this Trump?
It ain't no use to vote and wonder why if you don't know by now.
I've been going back and forth between Johnson and ("Evan help us") McMullin. If I lived in Utah, I'd definitely go for McMullin. I'd love to see some actual electoral votes avoid Trump and Clinton. The case for the forgetful pothead is that if the Libertarian party gets five percent, they get some federal seed money for 2020 - a little insurance if the Republican party continues down the low road.
The only one of those candidates I'm not familiar with is Moorehead. De La Fuente is running as both Reform Party and Delta depending on the ballot (like McMullin used the Independence Party to get on the ballot in some states).
McMullin's official running mate is a woman named Mindy Finn, although if you're in a state where he made the ballot, he's probably listed with Nathan Johnson as a running mate because he used a friend's name as a placeholder and now it's too late to change them.
The Federalist posted a strategy on their blog yesterday for throwing the race to the House: Utah residents should vote for McMullin. New Mexico residents should vote for Johnson. Arizona, Iowa, Florida, Georgia, Maine, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin residents should vote for whichever third-party candidate is polling the highest in their state the week of the election. Probably wouldn't hurt if Vermont wrote in Sanders, either, as I don't think you have to register as a write-in there.
The way things are looking now, Clinton will probably run away with it, as the people abandoning Trump are splintering rather than coming up with a coherent strategy. In Tennessee, normally a reliably red state, the governor announced that he would write in "a Republican" if Trump doesn't withdraw. He would have done better to announce exactly which Republican he was planning to write in, as there are several people registered as write-ins in the state.
As a strategic voter, I'm beginning to think — elect Trump only because he could effectively be removed from office by Congress.
It's easy to imagine that, like her husband, President Hillary could predictably wind up being impeached. But, unfortunately, like her husband, the corrupt Dems in the Senate would never convict no matter how guilty she (already) is of high crimes and misdemeanors.
But, unfortunately, like her husband, the corrupt Dems in the Senate...
Careful! You sound more and more like them every day. ;-)
Seriously, what would you say makes you different from a Democratic Senator? Couldn't that charge be leveled at anyone?
Legislation implies Congress. Congress will be ignored and the country will be run (into the ground) by EO.
Dare them to try to impeach her !
You're right. I doubt she'll deal with Congress at all. She will engage in some asinine EO's, then when Congress refuses to fund them, help the beneficiaries sue for the money "promised" them.
Trump is hardly a great candidate...but Republicans will remove Republicans from office. Democrats will never do that to Democrats.
It's pretty simple. Assume the President comes out and sacrifices a screaming pregnant 15 year old black girl on the front lawn of the White House in front of the cameras; tears out her 8 month old child and then eats it.
What happens? If the President is Trump, wouldn't he be impeached and in jail within the hour? Maybe two if they have to find Roberts stuck inside a toilet to preside over the trial.
If it's Hillary, then who would expect anything more than a scathing article on Brietbart? If the media mentioned it at all, it would only be to praise Hillary for her support of the right to choose and carefully ignore the fact the black girl didn't get a choice. The GOP would defeat any articles of impeachment any rogue House member offered. And certainly the Senate would never, ever convict Hillary of anything.
Same as any other blatant issue Hillary does. Lock up the LDS church's leadership and execute them? Yawn. Ship millions of Baptists and Catholics to the camps? How come the Redskins haven't changed their name yet? Shame on them! Hillary is flying the flag of ISIS over the White House? Did you hear about the latest pronouncement from Al Gore yet?
There is simply nothing that Hillary wouldn't get away with, and we all know it.
--Vance
Ann, resist the influence the NY Times is using on you.
Actually, they probably don't care about you so much. It's Utah they really want to influence. If they can keep Utah out of Trump's pocket, this gives Hillary more of a chance.
But, Trump is done, isn't he? So, why are they working so hard to help Hillary?
I suppose you don't want to leave anything to chance.
As a strategic voter, I'm beginning to think — elect Trump only because he could effectively be removed from office by Congress.
If Trump gets in he'll use the full power of the presidency to remain. Any attempt to impeach him would be long and messy.
There's a higher probability that HRC wouldn't last her term because of health reasons than Trump getting impeached.
There's a higher probability that HRC wouldn't last her term because of health reasons than Trump getting impeached.
And then we'd get smarmy Tim Kaine.
There is simply nothing that Hillary wouldn't get away with, and we all know it.
LOL! Someone suffers from Hillary Worship Syndrome. She's gotten away with plenty already. She excels at finding ways to whitewash the truth, but look up Haiti, Libya, Frank Giustra, Honduras, fracking abroad. I mean, I know an MSM Democrat will do anything for money. But some people actually don't think all her payoffs make these things right.
The only way to stop Hillary is to vote for Trump.
In 1917 the only way to stop Lenin and his genocidal Bolshevik thugs was to support Konilov - or someone like him. There was no middle option - but the liberals wanted to believe there was. Just like they wanted to believe you could stop Hitler in 1933 by voting for some mushy "Centre" Party.
In Nevada the ballot contains the option "None of these candidates". This could be useful, except that "None of these candidates" is not allowed to win.
We're in this nasty fix because the Democrats rigged their primaries and the Republicans didn't.
For any of the 2nd tier candidates to make the list for a House selection, one or more of them will have to win a big, blue state, or two or more of the smaller blue states. All that McMullen winning Utah would do is make Trump's win less likely, and 538's writers know this.
This is the theme of the week at 538- they are attempting to convince Republican voters it is ok to not vote for Trump. That is what the story earlier this week about Ron Johnson's resurgence was about along with the assertion that down ticket Democrats are facing increasingly longer odds. All of these stories are attempts to depress Republican turnout and raise Democratic turnout. It is clever since it appears 100% of the NeverTrump brigade believe 538 in the respect.
As I wrote the other day, I think Trump is now going to lose and the Senate will go for the Democrats as they win every single one of the listed tossups, and would like sneak a win or two elsewhere, too. If Trump loses by more than 3-4%, the House will be lost, too. That is what happens when you openly abandon the top of your ticket- your party gets a midterm turnout of the base, and the winning party gets a presidential turnout.
Deus ex machina xxx (Impeachment!):
David Gelernter (professor of computer science at Yale) OpEd in WSJ:
"...In his Mr. Nauseating video of last weekend, Mr. Trump showed us that he had all the class and cool of a misbegotten 12-year-old boy. Yet the video taught us nothing; no one had ever mistaken him for anything but an infantile vulgarian. This week’s allegations of actual abuse are different. If these stories are true (and I don’t know why they shouldn’t be), there is nothing to be said for Mr. Trump. Unfortunately, there is nothing to be said for Mrs. Clinton either. If we don’t take both facts into account, we are not morally serious."
"...She is no mere rock star; she is Hillary the Queen. She is so big, and you are so small, she can barely even see you from up there. What are you? A macromolecule?
I’ll vote for Mr. Trump—-grimly. But there is no alternative, no shadow of a responsible alternative."
"...People say [Trump] became a star because he just happened to mention an issue that just happened to catch on. But immigration is the central issue of our time...
...The liberal theory is that, other things being equal, all human beings have an equal right to settle in America....Does all mankind have a right to camp in your backyard, eat in your kitchen, work at your office and borrow your best jogging outfit?"
"...But forget psychology. Ordinary politics says that Mr. Trump will not do crazy things or go off half-cocked, because Republicans in Congress will be eager to impeach him and put Mike Pence in charge. That was the subtext of the vice-presidential debate, though Mr. Pence himself (probably) didn’t intend it. When it’s my turn, you can all relax. Democrats, obviously, will be eager to help when the task is removing a Republican.
Impeachment is Trump-voters’ ace in the hole. It’s an abnormal measure, but this is an abnormal year....Mr. Trump will be impeachment bait."

@Yancy, take a deep breath. The GOP currently holds 247 seats out of 435 in the House of Representatives -- to lose control they would have to lose a full 30 seats. Does this year feel like a Democrat wave to you? Do you think Hillary Clinton will have enough coat tails to pull in every seat currently held by a Republican which is rated a tossup? Would you believe that even if she did, that would be a net gain of only 11?
I think the GOP will hold the Senate, but they'll lose a little ground. Right now there are 9 seats which are rated "toss up" or "leans." It looks like Kirk (R-Illinois) is a goner, but Reid's old seat in Nevada seems headed for the Republicans. Best guess is that the Senate will be 52-48 GOP when the dust settles.
You are right about McMullin making Trump's win less likely, though.
The NeverTrumpers and the neocons at The Weekly Standard and the weirdos at NR all make me wonder what the incentives are.
The DC insiders have cocktail party invitations as a consideration.
Kristol has probably killed TWS although the Murdoch kids are pushing left pretty firmly.
What incentive for the NeverTrumpers out in the hinterlands ?
Why is NR so crazy ? I'll bet they have lost a thousand subscribers. They lost me.
My Florida ballot is the same. I'm writing in McMullin.

If Trump got impeached and removed it would be worth it just so we actually had a third branch of government. As of now congress is non-existent.
That is if you think the court is actually a separate branch now. Two more liberals on the court and we are a dictatorship.

Better to write in Egg McMuffin. Tastier, more nutritious and less full of crap.
A vote for Gary Johnson has some reality. At minimum, I gather, if Johnson (or any minority party) gets 5%, then that party gets public money for 2020. Gary was back in NM in Santa Fe today. Besides, a vote for Gary is a matter of principle. The other two are unacceptable.
Why is NR acting so strange?
"Strange" in what sense? They purged Coulter in 2002, they attacked Robert Novak and Buchanan in 2004 as "unpatriotic". They fired Derbyshire in 2008, and cut Mark Steyn loose in 2014.
They've been AWOL in the war against amnesty, illegal immigration and globalization for almost 20 years.
National Review has made it quite clear, for almost 15 years, that they are the "Washington Generals" when it comes to opposing the Left-wing agenda on everything except tax cuts for the rich, wars in the middle east, and worthless chatter about "Smaller Government" or abortion.
Rocky spelled Roque - makes perfect sense. I'd vote for him over Donnie because he is an immigrant and apparently doesn't sexually molest women. Truth is that I would vote for everyone on the ballot including "Write In" before Trump and Hillary, who are listed under the category of never.

immigration is the central issue of our time....The liberal theory is that, other things being equal, all human beings have an equal right to settle in America....Does all mankind have a right to camp in your backyard, eat in your kitchen, work at your office and borrow your best jogging outfit?
This is just stupid. Immigrants don't camp in anyone's backyard, they buy or rent places to live from consenting adults. But you want to forbid your neighbor from selling his house to an immigrant, because you don't actually believe in freedom.
The same goes for the other supposed horrors here. Immigrants don't want to eat in your kitchen, they want to eat in their own kitchens that they themselves pay for, just like anybody else. And if they work at your office it's because your boss thinks they do good work and are worth what he pays them. I would hope that's also true of you, but maybe it isn't. Where did you get the idea that you are entitled to be paid to do something when someone else is willing to do it better for less? Do you go out of your way to shop at the most expensive stores so you can pay higher prices for everything? No? Then why should your employer have to do that?
And finally, why in the world would anyone want to borrow your best jogging outfit? My guess is it hasn't been washed for a while and smells pretty bad.
The arguments against immigration are all pretty weak. Except for one, but it's the one you're ashamed to make. And you should be.
"As a strategic voter, I'm beginning to think — elect Trump only because he could effectively be removed from office by Congress."

Of course, there's also the benefit that we'd have a press. We had a closely scrutinizing press under W. Those were the days.
My brother lives in another country. He says people there are amazed. Many people ask him if America has a do-over process because surely one of those people will not be President of the United States.

Take your pick.
I think we've gotten to the point in this country where Separation would be the best thing.
Its perfectly obvious that Hillary - or any other Liberal Democrat - could be caught on tape selling out this country to a foreign power, after killing a man, after making a deal with Satan.
And 90% of Democrats of would still vote for him/her.
We have nothing in common. I wish we could just establish a country full of liberals and conservatives. We could take 90 percent of blacks, 70% of Jews,a and 50% of the rest of the country (including Gays and Feminists) and give you your own weird little Left-wing Empire.
The rest of us could be left alone to live a normal existence.

They are crumb suckers scurrying about the DC sphere sucking up the droppings of the ultra wealthy globalists that run DC. They have a rice bowl and they guard it jealously.
The interesting thing about this McMullen idea isn't you find one candidate that you run nationally but 50 candidate that you write in for each state. Each person vote for their own governor regardless of party. So If Wisconsin goes Walker and Texas goes Abbott , Florida Scott, Pa goes Wolf, Ohio Kasich, Minn to Dayton and Rhode Island Raimondo. Depending on how the other states fall might be enough to throw the election to the House of Representatives. Who would then get to decide between Hillary, Trump and Abbott. Since as has been pointed out before, this isn't a national election but 50 state elections. So if you don't want to pick between dumb and dumber, and you would like to upset the system, you deny both of them by voting for someone else who could win your state. For people in most states even if you hate your Governor, your state probably lacks the electoral heft to get him or her on the House of Representatives ballot. The people with the serious choice are those from the big 5 of California, Texas, New York, Florida and Pennsylvania. In this election I doubt that Brown or Cuomo have to popularity to beat Hillary.
"My prediction is that Althouse will write in Bob Dylan."
and what a fine choice it is. Dylan just won the Nobel Prize for literature. Did Evan McMullin ever win a Nobel prize? Clearly, a nobel leaurate is a lot more accomplished than some republican guy. So, Dylan, as a write in candidate would be a fine choice.

Nobody has any problems with immigration. We are opposed to ILLEGAL immigration.
So let's just have a giant, permanent amnesty, i.e., just repeal all the immigration laws so that all immigrants are legal. Like it used to be when my great-grandparents came here.
Oh, but you don't want that. Proving that's it's not the illegality that bothers you, but the large number of immigrants that would result.
@Jeff, the problem with -- as Achilles points out -- illegal immigration is two-fold. The first is the impact of illegal immigrants willing to take any job (whether they are qualified or not) on American workers. Liberals don't seem to care very much about getting real jobs for inner city blacks or out of work rural whites, as long as they can get someone to mow their lawn or clean the house or change their kids' pooped up diapers for next to nothing. That part's bad enough.
To my mind, and I think to other people's minds, the worse part has to do with the classic liberal approach to laws. If you don't like it; ignore it. Wink, wink. Nudge, nudge. If the laws about paying withholding tax and workers comp taxes and all the other employment-related taxes bite, then don't pay withholding tax and the other employment-related taxes. So, bottom line, I fully agree with you. If we aren't going to enforce our laws, then by all means let's repeal them all. Totally open borders! No more employer taxes! Let people come here even if they've posted their desire to kill infidel Americans on social media! No more H1b visas, no more green cards. Let Indian programmers come and sell their skills to the highest bidder. Sounds fine to me.
@Big Mike,
I seem to recall that you are, like me, a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. So long as we have a lot of armed citizens about, I just don't think the jihadists are going to make much headway here. I would much rather trust ordinary armed Americans to deal with them than expect the INS or the Border Patrol to catch them all. Any idiot can get into this country even now. If you don't care about getting a job or benefits here, it's easy. We have thousands of miles of land borders, and thousands more miles of ocean borders. It's never going to be possible to keep smart, adequately financed and determined terrorists out. The reasons we're not overrun with them now are that their aren't that many of them and they prefer softer targets.
McMullin's bid is a put-up by GOPe types (Rick Wilson, Bill Kristol, etc) to throw the Presidential Election to the House is case of a tie/no-majority in the Electoral College.
Also, if it's close but favoring Trump, expect both the Dems and #NeverTrump to be lobbying Electors like Bob Beckel did for Gore in 2000.
