At the Late Rose Café....
... you can talk about whatever you like. Feel free to drop links that you wish I'd make into separate posts. Or just amuse yourself. Or talk about the big baseball game.
And if you've got some shopping to do, please consider doing it through the Althouse Amazon Portal. You might say, but what can I buy? Or how can I buy what Althouse bought recently? I can tell you that I bought this turtleneck. And these flexible silicone soap dishes. And this pillow speaker to fend off all remnants of insomnia with my audiobooks. And this excellent camera... which wasn't the camera I had with me when I encountered that rose. That was an old Nikon Coolpix, which I guess these days would correspond to something about like this.

I'm voting against Hillary. I'd crawl five miles over broken glass to cast my ballot.
Huskers v Badgers. Badgers favored by 7.5. I say Badgers by 21.
Cubs in four. Sweep. Better pitching.
Quit Facebook today. I am so pissed I was innocently providing content for free to a network that just used their incredible wealth to give Hillary $34 million dollars. I can't be a part of it.
Google is just as bad. Bing is almost as bad. If Hillary wins, giving up the internet and watching TV will not be that hard. I think I will use the time to write a novel. I have a couple, three ideas.
It seems like a good time to quote from the Book of Mormon. When Christ visits the civilization from which the record originates, which was after His resurrection in Jerusalem, He declares to them:
...And there shall be no disputations among you, as there have hitherto been; neither shall there be disputations among you concerning the points of my doctrine, as there have hitherto been.
29 For verily, verily I say unto you, he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but is of the devil, who is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with another.
30 Behold, this is not my doctrine, to stir up the hearts of men with anger, one against another; but this is my doctrine, that such things should be done away.
The best thing about watching this series is the old clips of my Marlins stomping on the dreams of both teams.
You'd want the Cubs to lose so that the legend is not lost.
The Mets won once and it was just put down to a crazy year - the typical Mets play being a ball hit past the second baseman who was watching the crowd, according to Jean Shepherd. They continued to be the team of unserious incompetence.
But you need a genuinely spectacularly unlucky team in the sport, and the Cubs are it.
Every hope is dashed, should be the lesson you can bring up with that club.
Speaking of Nikon camera's, has anyone else seen this video yet? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PbUjTxiyNQ
@David Begley, I think you're a little optimistic.
I know. Will America be a better place without the Cubs being cursed? But in the American League, I follow the Red Sox, and as a Red Sox fan, I have to admit that it is pretty good to have the curse lifted. NY Rangers fans were extremely happy to have that chant of 1940! stopped.
I had the TV tuned to ESPN this morning, I thought it was the NFL network, they spent a fair amount of time listing the races of the players on the Cubs after noting that the last winners of the WS were all white. It was on DVR, so I skipped forward a couple of minutes. The first word I hear after skipping ahead is "Puerto Rican!" I just don't get the point of it. Seriously. Is there anybody who follows baseball a tiny bit to whom this is any kind of news?
Sleeping Doberman in next roomdetects peanut butter. youtube.
One of the mysteries is how an unalerted dog can distinguish events in the next room, and always arrives when a shared food is opened.
I suspect it's sound, not scent.
Scent theoretically travels infintely fast, which I suppose means at the speed of sound, but the amount of it is infinitesmal. Actual sound on the other hand would give more of a clue.
And she reponds to the opening of the cheese drawer in the fridge, which does not involve opening cheese, a vote for sound not scent.
The empty peanut butter jar is probably floor squeaks or something. She doesn't repond to mere opening of peanut butter, just jar placement on the floor.
I will be for the Cubs!
Watching it now, and I see instead of CHI and CLE it says CHC and CLE. Really? Must we have our intelligence insulted by the network's assuming that we could not know that CHI is the National League team by process of elimination since we know CLE is the AL team?
Anyway, go CHI! I hope lots of bases will be stolen.
(I am not a robot is taking a long time to swirl and bring up an image.)
"You'd want the Cubs to lose so that the legend is not lost."
This is true. Kind of like when they let Teddy Roosevelt win the presidents' race here at Nats Park in DC. It was never the same again.
Lawyers in Love
It seems overproduced already. The addiction to highlights is draining the tension out of the here and now. Just show the game, don't try to make it better, fancier or slicker.
OMG Chicago. What is going on?
Big Mike.
Well, maybe not a sweep. But Corn still loses.
"You'd want the Cubs to lose so that the legend is not lost."
Not only would it not be lost, it would be strengthened. That's kind of how I'm leaning right now.
Flatscreens and Pampers for the bold. (win or lose)
Sitting in a bar in Australia right now (yes, it's morning here, but I just got off the plane; my body still thinks it's evening). There's an NHL game and a MLS soccer game on the tellies, but not the Workd Series.
I guess if you're a left-wing Lilly white Englishman (or Englishwoman) you might find the "novel’s inventive comic approach to the thorny issues of racial identity and injustice.."
Right up your alley.
My suspicion is that its just the same old Left-wing/liberal race narrative we're been getting for the last 50 years - only re-packaged. My suspicion is that besides little old white ladies, Liberals, and Englishmen (and Englishwomen) no else will find it "Inventive" or "Comic".
People still talking about how "funny, brutal, and honest" Richard Pryor was will probably like it.
Did vote early today. First time ever seeing a line out the door for voting early.
@David, doesn't look good so far for the Cubbies.
Tim in Vermont, look at just one haul for her:

" I think I will use the time to write a novel. I have a couple, three ideas."
It's not bad. I have written two books, Not fiction but I wish I could write dialog like WEB Griffin or Daniel Silver.
The pain is going through them editing and revising.
Somebody, maybe Hemingway, said to throw away your first four chapters,
His first wife, Hadley, probably did him a favor losing his first novel manuscript.
As far as I can tell the World Series is not on TV in Sydney. They have a lot of sports channels. Fox Sports 1HD has billiards, Fox Sports 2HD has badminton, 3HD women's rugby, 4HD the NHL, .... but no World Series.
Ok, so you haven't covered the Scott Adams newest endorsement for Trump, so I've a few things to say about it.
If you haven't read it, please go and read it first before reading what I have to say. Here is the link:

So, Adams is correct. And it's having real life consequences in my life right now.
You see, I live in liberal Seattle. And here in Seattle, two of my boys are involved in gymnastics. Many of the parents are on my Facebook page. One of the parents in particular called me out a few months ago, at a kids birthday party, in the middle of a crowd of other parents and said, "Hey! You haven't added me as a friend yet and accepted my Facebook friend request."
Being called out like that I didn't want to say anything negative, so I just assured her, yes, I'll add you as soon as possible. And I did.
About a month ago she started posted Pro Hillary stuff on her Facebook. In the comments, I responded. Pretty soon, she was posting Pro Hillary stuff and saying, "No comments, just food for thought." So I told her, "Hey look, it's your Facebook, no problem. But if you're not going to allow people to comment, I'm going to remove you from my Facebook. No insult intended, I just prefer to be able to comment." she kept posting Hillary stuff and saying No Comment, so I removed her from my Facebook. No harm, no foul, right?
Immediately after that, her son started harassing both of my boys during Gymnastics class. This is 4 hours a night, 5 nights a week. One night my son came home in tears because the boy he thought was his friend was telling him he was a racist and a sexist and I was too (his dad) because we supported Trump.
Now it's escalated and he's got 3 boys ganging up on him, calling him names that he doesn't even understand, and surrounding him at his locker. And the really sad thing is, my son is twice their size and much stronger than these punk boys. I told him he was wise for not hitting them, but he needed to understand, they didn't know what they were saying.
But, wow, Democrats are such bullies!
Really pisses me off. Scott Adams is right.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of hearing the Met's new Tristan. Wagner would have smiled at the seamless artistry of the production, with the singing, orchestral playing and theatrical elements working so well together to make a truly great evening. Nina Stemme was a spectacular Isolde for the ages, singing the most difficult music for hours on end without ever developing the harsh, screechy edge that so often happens in such punishing roles. Just lovely, from her opening song to the last note of the liebestod. But she was just one stand-out in a cast full of them -- Rene Pape as King Marke, Stuart Skelton as Tristan and Ekatarina Gubanova as Brangane, all terrific.
This production was strong enough almost to seduce you into accepting the idea that deep and endless love will lead the lovers to yearn for death as the only way to achieve its fullest expression. Weird, I know, and obviously a hard sell, but this Tristan is that good.
There's only one more performance scheduled this season. Any music lovers out there who can get to NYC to see this production will not be disappointed. Monday's performance was not sold out -- a scandal in itself-- and there may still be tickets available for the last one. If you can't get here, make sure to catch it on one of the 'Met at the movies' broadcasts if that becomes available.
Eric, I read it. And as sad as your situation is, I am not surprised. They, and their tactics, are everywhere. The MSM parrots the racist/sexist meme, most of the major blogs articles as well, then they invade blogs with commenters using the same taunting tactics. Now they've started invading individual twitter accounts, leaving notes (username)has added you to his "low IQ Trumptard list" or something to that effect.
I am shocked, and probably shouldn't be that a parent is (obviously) encouraging her children to do this. It sounds like the kids involved aren't even that old, which is very disturbing.
I think if I were you I would first take screenshots of her HRC posts as far back as you can (I don't use FB so not sure how that works), keep meticulous notes on dates/times and what your boys said they said, and then find a way to get video of the bullying--more than one if you can. If it's soon, I would try and contact the Trump campaign. At the very least, if you get footage, I'd consult an atty and see if there's any cause--even if it's just enough for him/her to write a warning letter.
Then I would consider getting the hell out of that state. Sounds like your kids are young enough that they will have a chance to escape ending up like that vile mom.
Thanks Meeeea but I don't believe in running away. It is very tough for my son, and my wife and I are doing our best to encourage him and help him. When I was his age, I didn't want my parents fighting my battles. It's a time that children learn how to stand up to tyranny without fear of being killed (What's the worst these kids can do anyway?).
I just want my boys to take the right lesson from this. Stand strong. Stand for what you believe in. Always do the right thing.
But seriously, it pisses me off also. Because I feel powerless. As much as I want to interfere, I don't want to fight my childrens battles.
Totally understand. I just am appalled at the hate in people on the left.
Move out of Seattle. It will only get worse. And on the way out your boy should tell those punks that he will hurt them if they don't shut up. Ftmf
@eric, and yet the Professor asks us to feel the love. Does she have the self-awareness to grasp the level of sheer hatred coming from her side of the political spectrum directed at ordinary people who are center and right-of-center? I used to think Meade would help her see reality. He disappoints me.

I went to an early voting site yesterday and did my civic duty. I'm a "crawl on my belly over broken glass in a puddle of burning alcohol to vote against Hillary" voter, so Trump was the only option. Fortunately, crawling over broken glass and burning alcohol wasn't necessary. I had filled out my sample ballot in advance, to speed up the process. I went after work, arriving about 3:15 p.m., and there was no line. I got my ballot printed out, went to the one of the voting stations (about half of which were in use), inked in the little ovals and was done in less than ten minutes. It was a good experience, since it was brief.
I did as much due diligence as I could. I had received recommendation cards from the Republicans and the AFL-CIO, touting the exact opposite positions on candidates and issues, which was helpful. I haven't voted for any Democrats since 9/11, and I didn't start yesterday, either. I couldn't find anything egregious online to merit throwing any judges or justices out. I haven't had any problem with mosquitos, so I voted for the incumbents on the mosquito control board. About the only position I split with the Republicans on was medical marijuana, for which I voted Yes.
And now that's over and done with for another two years.

But he does mow the grass.
I have no confidence in early voting. I have a strong suspicion that Republican ballots cast early will disappear.
I had an unusual experience yesterday. A patient of mine accused me of racism because his account got sent to collections. People always get upset when they are sent to collections, even if they've ignored over 8 invoices, but this is the first time I've been called racist over it.
Eric that is a horrible situation. Sunlight is the best disinfectant, here, perhaps, but if this is a Club to which you pay a fee, and if it were me, I would be raising Holy Hell with the administrators because (1) children are alone in the locker room unsupervised and (2) children are being bullied as a result. Where is the oversight?
Scott Adams is right.
@Sydney, you must be mistaken! The hallmark of the Obama years was to be all the racial healing. Didn't you get the memo? It's going to happen any day now, just you wait.
Why don't you feel the love?
