To appreciate Gene Wilder, you must watch Silver Streak, especially when he visits the Sheriff and talks about the train murders. The line about Rembrandt will make you cry and laugh at the same time. He was my favorite actor. I watched and loved all his movies, from Willy Wonka to Frankenstein to Woman in Red. RIP!
I liked his movies. He handled tragedy in his personal life with grace and honor. There's a lot of Hollywood stars whose movies you like but who seem lacking in some basic human decencies. That's not the case with Wilder. He reall did seem like an ok guy........The fact that he had Altzheimers adds another level of pathos to his ending.
Sometimes a thing starts where fans will yell something at an actor when they see him or her in public. With William Shatner it was "Beam me up, Scotty." With Bob Newhart it was, "Hi, Bob!"
I kind of hope nobody yelled anything at Gene Wilder.
I hope everyone just left him alone like any other regular guy.
We don't really know celebrities, but he always seemed like the kind and gentle people he played. I like to believe it, anyway. Willy Wonka is one of those rare movies that really capture something magical.
A wonderful man, a great actor and writer. He didn't want anyone to know of his diseases, his family's statement said, because he feared there would be one less smile in the world. Rest in peace.

And he saw the beauty in Gilda Radner, even as she was dying.
