"In a subdued joint appearance before the press in Mexico City," Donald Trump and Enrique Peña Nieto "described the meeting as warm..."

"... despite significant disagreements on issues of trade and immigration," the NYT reports.
Mr. Trump, first reading slowly from a statement and then speaking more freely in response to a question, said he now considered Mr. Peña Nieto a friend and heaped praise on Americans of Mexican descent. Mexican-Americans, Mr. Trump said, were “beyond reproach” and “spectacular, hard-working people.” But Mr. Trump said he also told Mr. Peña Nieto directly that he felt Mexico had benefited disproportionately from its trade agreements with the United States, and that he had described illegal immigration as a problem for both countries....

Mr. Peña Nieto pushed back in the gentlest of terms on several of Mr. Trump’s claims on Nafta... Without mentioning specific remarks by Mr. Trump, Mexico’s president said that hurtful comments had been made. “Mexican nationals in the United States are honest people, working people,” he said, adding, “Mexicans deserve everybody’s respect.” But Mr. Peña Nieto stopped well short of scolding Mr. Trump on the international stage. On the contrary, he expressed optimism that they could work together if Mr. Trump was elected president, “even though we do not agree on everything.”
There were only a few protesters, even though there were efforts on social media to drum up protesting. One protester who did show up — “Maldito Perro”  (Damned Dog) — said  “These days people protest by clicking ‘like’ or ‘dislike.’ ”

But Mr. Trump showed up in Mexico. And Mrs. Clinton clicked "dislike," essentially, saying, in Cincinnati: "It certainly takes more than trying to make up for a year of insults and insinuations by dropping in on our neighbors for a few hours and then flying home again."

I'm seeing a really big difference these last week's between Trump and Hillary.

The guy is seemingly everywhere.

A flood in Louisiana? Trump is there.
Riots in Wisconsin? Trump is there.
Invited by foreign President? Trump is there.

Hillary? All I know is she is in Hollywood raising millions or on the east coast raising millions and dancing with Paul McCartney.

It's a good move by Trump, dare I say, a Presidential move?

His sometimes obnoxious tone is what turns off many mushy, middle voters. His tone, however, is what propelled him to win the GOP primary.

A primary race, though, is different than a general election race -- ya gotta adjust, without making it seem to obvious that you are adjusting.

Meeting with Presient Pena Nieto in Mexico, while Hillary sits at home tweeting about it, speaks volumes.

Over a million people annually illegally entering America from Mexico is more than an "immigration" issue. Combined with a selective-child policy, the motives of anti-native factions, fiscal liberal debtors, and class diversity mongers are more than a little suspect.

Clinton is still watching the video of the Libya-ISIS Affair and the path from a premature removal of honest brokers from Iraq to social justice adventurism and subsequent coverup of the catastrophic anthropogenic global refugee crises.

Having a compassionate plan for the repatriation of foreign nationals should include several different components, depending upon whether or not that foreign national has dependents in this country. If that foreign national is married with children who are American citizens, they should be able to choose which partner is repatriated, and upon successful application for return, would be able to return to be with those children while the other spouse goes through the repatriation process. Should either or both parents fail in their application for return, those parents can choose to have their children returned to them in their country of origin--who would be eligible for return to this country at the age of majority, should they choose to do so--or placed into foster care.

We need to help these displaced nationals. Assisting them in their repatriation process would be a benefit for all involved.

To be noted, these polls are Hillary doing bad, not Trump doing good. But what if Trump keeps up the high energy? Keeps showing up in places like Louisiana, going to Mexico, going to Wisconsin? Saying the tough things and looking presidential?

Hillary better pray he doesn't start to rise in the polls.

Could this be a race between two candidates, neither of whom really wants to win? Either HRC is sicker than she's letting on, or she just doesn't want to win - those are the only reasons I can think of for why she won't get off her fat ass to do the work.

If I were Trump, I'd start traveling at a breakneck pace like this -- see foreign leaders and then back to battleground states. And every time I met with a foreign leader, I'd mention that Hillary can't keep up. People elect the person they already see as president -- so be that person and wear her out in the process.

Hillary is also too ill to travel out of the country.

If Hillary COULD do more, certainly she would, correct? Her overarching campaign tactic always was to minimize her own exposure since, as all poll readers know, her negatives are inversely but tightly entwined with her screen time. But surely Mook et al must know the time for that has concluded. The chief indicia today, I would say, is that Pena sought Trump, not the reverse. It looks like he thinks he will be dealing with Trump and it cannot, therefore, be so that all 130 million Mexicans hate the man irredeemably, as Vicente Fox claims. If Hillary COULD, she would. She just can't.

A fine display of one of Trump's greatest strengths: to him, winning means negotiating and ending up with a deal. Even if we're not there yet, this is a huge step in the right direction. To Obama, winning has always meant "everybody do what I want." I don't expect anything different from Clinton.

Trump can get along with both Democrats and Republicans, and if he wins, it will be a welcome change from the gridlock and headbutting we've the country has been subjected to for years.

I was able to watch news shows today. Some had unusual people in to present the talking points for the left. My guess is that the "regulars" were too smart to make fools of themselves by trying to mock Trump without having had the benefit of practicing the carefully prepared talking points prepared by the NYT, etc.

It was a version of Eric's classic comment "Trump was terrible - I'll let you know why as soon as I hear from the left commentators." [I know, that is not a direct quote of Eric's comment, but close enough.] One poor fellow said: "Trump completely capitulated - he didn't bring up who would pay for the wall!" Now, I don't know what a "complete capitulation" might actually have been, but one thing that it certainly was not is simply failing to bring something up. Looking ridiculous is an unavoidable result of rushing unprepared into "analyzing" someone's position or behavior without the benefit of the prepared narrative.

Trump was brilliant to seize this quick opportunity to steal a march on the narrative. You will read small stories on how efforts were made to scare up "protesters" to mar the visuals and find kittens who were run over by Trump's motorcade. Hillary's minions were caught flat-footed on this one.

I am sure that what appears to be master-stroke by Trump (well executed) was actually a terrible, sexist, racist, amateurish, yada-yada. As soon as the left catches up we will find out why that is so.

According to Mr. Peña Nieto “Mexican nationals in the United States are honest people, working people,”

Well, some are and some aren't but they do depress wages, which is bad for American workers. Speaking for myself, whenever I engage a contractor and what shows up is an all-Spanish speaking crew (and many only speaking Spanish) I worry about the quality of their work. Some are good and do good work, but at least half the time I get people who cannot (or pretend they cannot) communicate with me and who mess things up. I've had a roofing crew drop a pile of staples on my lawn and neither pick them all up nor warn me (do you know what it costs to replace the tires on a lawn tractor?) and I've had crews put the wrong color on walls until I could get their boss on the line.

Here's the problem for Mexico: they can't live without the remittances back to Mexico from the US. As of 2015, remittances was the largest source of income for Mexico, larger even than oil sales since the price of oil dropped so.

Systemic corruption, a narco-culture that often produces more dead bodies than the battlefields of the Mideast, & a growing middle class that now is connected enough to not only feel stifled by their culture, but even ashamed.

Mexico, as a matter of survival, has to keep those remittances flowing in. When Trump talks about locking up the border or sending back lots of Mexicans, he speaks as an existential threat to the Mexican state. If by words alone, President Pena Nieto can mollify the beast & reduce the future damage from a Trump presidency, that time today was time well spent for him & his people.

Seems like the border control debate in this election cycle is always focused on immigration, but that's not the only aspect.
Mexicans are suffering tremendously from the ascendancy of the drug cartels. The murder rate is unbelievable.
Wouldn't ordinary, honest, hard working Mexicans benefit from America getting control of it's border?
Wouldn't Mexico as a nation benefit if the flow of drug money to the cartels was sharply reduced?
There's no reason why we can't set up a system so Mexicans can come hear to work legally on jobs Americans don't want to do. It doesn't happen because politicians want the issue at election time.

@Robert Fulton. Exactly. So far the WaPo and NYT have been playing Trump's visit as a straight news story. I am sure that will change over the next 12 hours. Trump really did steal a march on Clinton. Perhaps earlier in the thread someone mentioned he was on the west coast when the invitation was issued and like any good exec who senses an opportunity he jumped right on it. Hillary was probably going to run a focus group to see if she should go - right along with the focus group on whether she should visit Baton Rouge. I an truly enjoying seeing the Clinton crew getting caught with their pants down. Earlier today I linked to a NY Post article that had Hillary sending classified material on her server(s) after she left as SOS. If Trump can maintain discipline the next two months are going to be like the water torture for the Clinton campaign.

Well-made "Amnesty Don" Music Video

"Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough isn’t letting the joke go. The MSNBC host posted a music video ode to “Amnesty Don,” his newly-coined nickname for Donald Trump over his ever-shifting immigration policy, on his Facebook page Wednesday."

https://www.facebook.com/JoeNBC/videos/10154489274671880/

'...At multiple points on the track, background singers croon: “He’s softening, is there a pill for that?” It's a reference to Trump’s own remark that his hard-line immigration policies could undergo a “softening.”

The song also references Trump’s repeated comments about his eldest daughter Ivanka’s good looks and suggested the GOP nominee has mental health problems.

“If you take medication for premature softening, don’t take it for your softening if you suffer from psychiatric abnormalities like being a sociopath, a psychopath, or nacissism, nativism, racism, or flip-floppery,” Scarborough sings. “Or if you just think your daughter is really, really hot.” '

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/joe-scarborough-amnesty-don-music-video

Really a catchy tune.

Whether Scarborough is actually successful in influencing Trump's poll numbers in a negative way with this is an open question. Some voters might see it as Trump becoming more rational.

This is a good day for Trump. He met with a world leader with whom he has obvious disagreement on policy. He gave remarks that come off as "normal" for a meeting between two leaders. He didn't significantly alter his message despite being in obviously hostile territory. And it seemed his counterpart was willing to concede that NAFTA has room for improvement and that there are border issues.

Later on in Arizona, in his immigration speech, Trump outlined 10 points - none of which included deporting all the people in the country illegally. Many of those 10 points will play very well in much of the country - particularly between the coasts - and they will make sense to a lot of people. The wall itself may not be popular, but the other 9 will strike many as reasonable, no matter how many times the press loses their collective mind bashing it.

Yancey Ward said...

Trump's speech should shut up those NeverTrumpers who were wailing that he was abandoning his base support in recent days, but it probably won't. He did pretty much what I said he should do earlier today. It will be difficult to make the argument to the American people that his plan is irrational in any degree. This is a speech Marco Rubio should have been giving since taking his Senate seat, or any of the other high profile candidates not named Ted Cruz (who was probably closest to Trump's position all along).

Anonymous said...

Young, I'm a free trade Democrat with slightly libertarian leanings. The two sanest candidates in this election is Gary Johnson - to a degree - and HRC - because of her iher understanding of policy.

That a nothing speech by Trump today impresses you is interesting.

I haven't a clue what's been going on in this blog. I just came upon it and was bored and thought I'd type a pithy comment or two.

Reading the comments, it seems many are comfortable deporting millions This means there's a comfort with the idea a quasi-police state enforcing deportation. So much for smaller government!

The ethics of such a move is too deplorable to consider rationally. That millions of Americans have fallen for the fallacy that immigrants commit more crime ( they don't) or are dependent on welfare more than Americans ( they aren't) tells me there's nothing fact or evidenced based about Trump's arguments. He is appealing to emotion.

Where's his position on the War on Drugs - he didn't think of that today did he?
And his nonsense ideas on trade and cringe-worthy assessment of NAFTA was embarrassing. Is it lack of logic that causes people to not see the link between the drop in immigrant arrivals ( yes the stats don't lie) and the influence of NAFTA? Mexico's economy has been steadily growing, due to trade, her only problem being corruption and the insidious influence of drug cartels which can only be broken if America "softens" her hard stance on a futile drug war. Compared to 2 decades ago, there are fewer immigrants arriving due to Mexico's aging population and dropping fertility rates. The hysteria about deportation is mystifying since Obama has deported more people than any previous President.

None of what Trump says gels with the truth, with fact or reality - but I'll let you guys cook.

Unknown said...

It's really simple. END "BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP". It is not in the 14th Amendment, OR in Wong Kim Ark (159 US 649 (1898)), often cited as a justification never HOLDS that anyone born in the US, even of alien parents, is a US Citizen.

That case holds that the CHILDREN OF LEGAL RESIDENT ALIENS is a US Citizen (See page 693). The practice of birthright citizenship is the way that the New World Order Marxists have invaded our country with third worlders. It provides the magnet, but it is totally illogical in its result, creating a class of illegal parents who's children are supposedly legal US Citizens. It is called KIDNAPPING. The stated 35 Million Illegals are probably more like 90 Million when the children are factored in.

End BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP, deport all minors and their illegal parents, but in fairness, allow the children the choice of US Citizenship when they reach the age of majority. That is the way to solve the problem, created by 100 years of TREASON, and allowing our country to be invaded.

Brando said...

I don't see how the Mexico trip hurt Trump--both he and Nieto say they discussed the wall, and the differing accounts are over whether they discussed who will pay for it. But that doesn't matter--the takeaway for most people is that Trump met with a foreign leader and discussed his campaign issue. I believe the wall will be built about as much as I believe a Trump University education is worth anything, but the optics of that meeting are not bad. I don't think it'll win new voters, but it will shore up his current support.

His hard line speech in AZ is also intended for the same thing--to keep the Coulters from bailing on him in the home stretch. Again, it's not a play to gain new voters (if you liked that speech, you were already voting for him) but remember his end game--starting his media empire. And that means having a very avid minority ready to consume what he is about to sell.

Say what you will about Trump as a businessman, but as a showman and media salesman he seems to know what he's doing. In the end this may profit him quite well and erase a lot of his debt.

CWJ said...

Apparently, paying for the wall is this campaign's binders full of women. Both "issues" are/were juvenile mischaracterizations of what was actually meant, but that won't stop the press from pushing them. The takeaways that a dramatic event such as Trump's visit could have generated are many. That the possibilities so quickly coalesced into this one sad theme reeks of coordination at the very least.
