Does Donald Trump drive you to drink?

The Nation is fund-raising on the assumption he does. In the email:
Are you looking for that perfect Malbec to pair with Donald Trump’s xenophobic and misogynistic rally speeches? Perhaps a complex Cabernet over which to discuss Bernie's case for democratic socialism? Maybe a simple Riesling to balance the rage you feel while watching the news...
Here's the whole thing. (Click to enlarge.)

They seem to be saying politics drives us to drink. Seems reasonable.

The Nation as capitalist pigs? Hard to believe. Especially considering the WSJ started the wine-by-mail business.

I don't have those emotions listening to Trump, but I do like all of those wines. Throw in a nice Pinot Noir, and you've hit all my go to vinos.

Yes, what would be the perfect pairing with oikophobi?

It will probably be served on the next exclusive The Nation cruise.

From "limousine liberal" to cruise ship leftist.

In the words of that paen to 1950s blue collar culture:

"Pappy said, son you're gonna drive me to drinking,
If you don't stop driving that Hot Rod Lincoln."

At The Nation: they're always whining!

Since the first GOP "Only Rosie O'Donnell" debate my brother and I have been getting together for all the debates and Tuesday Primary returns. We drink Spotted Cow and laugh our asses off.

And we text our mother who is one of the biggest Trump fans we know.

Here's to hoping Trumpy gets elected. Why if he does get elected and actually keeps his promise to lower income tax rates then I will be able to indulge in better wines. Go Trumpy go!

Wow. Wonder how many African-Americans and Latino voters are looking for the perfect Malbec or Cabernet to go with their everyday struggles. Or maybe a good German Riesling if you in the mood for a good Nazi wine.

What a bunch of liberal white elitist bullshit. The white working class revolted first favoring Trump. What are the Dems going to do when their working class voters revolt?

And no. Bernie supporters aren't the 'working class'.

Um, alcohol can cause major mental trauma. But don't let's go thinking that alcohol is all sweet. Are alcohol users known for their productivity, effective parenting or other aspects of good citizenship that we'd want to encourage? Half the class was taking alcohol and some never finished grad school. Some guy said his life turned to shit after taking alcohol. Alcohol induced spirituality has always seemed peculiar, and suspect, to me. Take John Lennon. Big alcohol enthusiast. Wrote some great songs under the influence. But at the same time, he left his wife and child, had major financial difficulties, broke up with the Beatles, and started shacking up with Yoko Ono. Can anyone point to a bio where the experimenter gained enduring love or some kind of basic, affirmative personality change because of alcohol use?

Nervous, stupid puritans crack me up.

With Trump it's champagne all of the time from celebrating winning again. Bitter days of losing will be gone. And the legalistic murdering Muslims can go blow themselves up somewhere else.

Are any of these wine clubs actually any good?

Strange. Given whom the Nation admires and took their goals from, I would think they would prefer vodka.

At least they know their audience. And that audience looks and behaves very much like a cartoon from the New Yorker.

Bizarre. Is there a segment of the population who actually wants to be addressed as though they were lightweight douches?

Ann's Trump derangement syndrome tag is wee bit too specific for a posting about The Nation, which is thoroughly deranged about every topic. Derangement and Corruption, they should have it inscribed on their masthead in 52 point Engravers Copperplate.

Nation readers are certainly drunkards, but worse than that they're wine bigot drunkards. Worse than that they're fashionable wine bigot drunkards who sniff haughtily at their glasses filled with too much over-hyped crap that a real wine bigot, comme moi, would scoff at with howls of derisive laughter. Cabernet and Malbec indeed, these Nation persons are a risibly ill-bred lot, eh? (They must shop at Walmart with dark glasses on.) Wave a '92 Burgundian Chambertin under their upturned noses and they'd drop the pretense, gawk open-mouthed, slip into their native speech, and say "Waz dat?"

Muslims don't drink. This is a micros session against them and Mormons. White privilege

This is a micros session against them and Mormons.

Wait, wait, don't tell me... I see in the cards you own an iPad.

But I guess we can be thankful that the idiotic expression has not yet been added to the orthography database.

Quaestor said...

We know what Muslims do when afflicted with TDS. They blow shit up. But what do Mormons do? I know what one Mormon did, which mayn't count since he's a lunatic who merely happens to be Mormon. Another Mormon made us realize that 2012 may not have been the tragedy we took it for on the first Wednesday in November. But what do they typically do, call down the wrath of the Angel Moroni? (Moroni?? Isn't there a legal name-changing process in Heaven? How can it be Heaven if you're stuck with a shitty name like Moroni for all eternity? The Angel Larry is less risible than Moroni, which sounds like it may be the Latin for more than one moron.)

I cannot be the only person to be struck by the dull futility of this.

Of course The Nation hates Trump! 99.999999999% of The Nation's readers will be actively opposing Trump. That isn't what matters. What matters, is if only 75% of Republicans support Trump. And what further matters is if the same 112% of black voters turn out to vote Democrat, as in '08 and '12.

"Misogynistic rally speeches?" The Nation offers up hyperbolic pablum for simple-minded women.

Wasn't there something sometime about "the soft misogyny of low expectations?" Or was that "soft bigotry?" Or does it matter which?

It would be refreshing if lefty victim groups would stop living down to those expectations.

Quaestor got me thinking, is there a correlation between wine preference and political persuasion?

Jaq said...

Well, 100% of the Democrats are not going to show up to stamp their approval on the Hillary - "She doesn't give the billionaires agita" - Clinton.

Michael K said...

" is there a correlation between wine preference and political persuasion?"

The more expensive, the more likely to vote Democrat.

Bricap said...

I just ran across this chart, Michael. Not sure that it's necessarily about price point, though. Maybe something along the lines of what's on a steakhouse list versus what's on the list at that new hip place in Brooklyn? I'm sure someday somebody will do a dissertation on who most likely drinks what. Would be interesting.
