"Top Democrats aren’t worried about Bernie Sanders beating Hillary Clinton in the primaries."

"They’re worried about what the popular response to Sanders shows them about Clinton’s vulnerabilities in November," Edward-Isaac Dovere and Gabriel Debenedetti write in Politico.
It’s the quiet chatter among operatives in New York, Washington and beyond—if Clinton’s got so much trouble connecting with people that she’s stuck in a long primary slog against an upstart socialist senator from Vermont with a beyond-parody Brooklyn Jewish accent, that’s because at least some of those voters are more driven by being anti-Hillary than pro-Bernie....

Really the disaster for the Democrats is that a ridiculous old "beyond-parody" crank can raise $75MILLION and run second.

What is a young telegenic Dem who doesnt smell of Ben-Gay going to think? There is about to be a stampede to the Commie quadrant in the next cycles.

Which will make Dems unelectable in most of the country.

They're not just realizing this now.

This is the whisper campaign of someone who'd like to swoop in and replace her.

And it would be a thundering roar but for an extreme burst of lucky coin flipping in Iowa.

Wait until she loses New Hampshire.

This isn't exactly new. Hillary!'s record of abject failure in every assignment should've rendered her unelectable. Somehow, the DemCong have been blackmailed into putting her forward as a candidate.

They have good reason to worry about her--she's an awful candidate. Her speaking style varies between fake anger and monotone, with the idea that being "louder" makes one more interesting (note--it doesn't! It makes you sound weird). Her pandering is too blatant to be effective. Her political instincts are too nakedly obvious--it never convinces anyone when they can see your machinations. And her incompetence as a public servant is obvious for anyone looking back over two decades. Plus, it's clear she doesn't actually like retail campaigning, so we're stuck with crap like that "Chipotle tour" that was justly mocked by everyone.

If Hillary wins this year by default, it will only be because any Democrat would have won. The Dems are taking a big risk with her, because even a marginally competent GOP could knock her out of the race.

As for the Sanders voters, as I said they could transfer to Hillary, but it won't be because she inspired them--it'll be because she scared them. Whether she can scare enough of them effectively enough is up to the GOP.

I will say that the relentlessly negative stuff coming out of the Cruz campaign against Trump makes me tune out Cruz, and the relentlessly negative stuff coming out of Bush against Rubio makes me tune out Bush, so I guess I will try to be as nice and reasonable as possible when criticizing Hillary, not because she deserves it, but because the red hot nasty shit is counter productive, even as it is true. It's the dense pack strategy of scandals, have so many of them nobody can sort them out, and it is somewhat working for her.

I have to figure that must insult the hell out of the leftist Bernie fans--that their (reasonably, I think) concerns about Hillary selling out the left every chance she gets and having genuine ethical problems are just "being manipulated by the right wing". It's condescending as hell and isn't going to do much to bring them in the fold if she gets the nomination.

I've seen a lot of reports about how younger leftist women are backing Bernie because they think it's insulting to suggest they should back Hillary just because she's a woman. While I may not think much of their leftist impulses, it's good to see they aren't buying into the Clinton level of pander.

That's the nub of it--if you go overboard it sounds like mindless noise, and drowns out the more real (and convincing) case against the person. Think about how the most histrionic parts of the anti-Iraq War movement (e.g., the Truthers, the Cindy Sheehan crap) drowned out the more convincing case (e.g., it would be a longer and more bloodier campaign than the administration was planning on).

Plus, there's just so much real stuff to go after Hillary with, one doesn't need to embellish.

Members of both camps would abandon their camps immediately if Elizabeth Warren were to announce her candidacy.

At least half of the Democrats are closet socialists anyway("More government control? Whats not to like!"). The fact that a terrible candidate like Bernie is doing well gives them cover to come out of the closet.

The Dem party is about to have a generation of office holders out themselves as Socialists before they realize how limiting it is for national office.

I'm not exactly thrilled with the republican field, but the fact that the Democratic establishment party lined up behind Hillary Clinton in "coronation" style represents an extremely weak party. Not only did they just get crushed locally, but they are also weak nationally?

Insomuch as it's time for the republicans to re-focus efforts on building good executives who can work to rise through the ranks of public service, it's also time for democrats to figure out why they are so terrible at governing - particularly in the executive. Democrats have shockingly few states with democratic leadership that are in any way considered a "well-run" or "successful" state.

Brando said...

"It's a smear to point out she has accomplished nothing? The closest thing she has to a "success" is invading a foreign country now infested by ISIS?"

That's why it's so absurd. The Left has many reasons to oppose Hillary that have nothing to do with the Right--it's not the Right that points out that she and her husband sold out the Left every time it was convenient. It's not the Right that points out she cravenly backed the Iraq War when it was politically popular, and frankly every other military action we've been in since Vietnam. It's not the Right that argues her Libyan adventure was warmongering BS. It's not the Right that points out her Wall Street ties and opposition to gay marriage until yesterday (except to the extent it shows her hypocrisy, but they don't criticize on the substance).

And as for her ethical (and legal) problems, why shouldn't the Left be just as concerned with not having a corruptocrat in the White House? If that bothers leftists then good for them! It's shameful that any Democrat would excuse that sort of thing just because it's one of their team. Sheldon Whitehouse is a pathetic tool.

It was never really the party of Bill and Hillary. Hillary was the excess baggage that was tolerated in devotion to Bill. Now that Bill is old and feeble, that tolerance is subsiding and the lack of enthusiasm for Hillary is being exposed. She still has enough establishment support to win the nomination but it will be a pyrrhic win for many Dems.

I think there is still a moderate faction among Democrats, by which I mean the sort of suburban voters who haven't gone full Occupy but want Medicare and SS to remain solvent and are okay with (slightly) higher taxes, don't want all guns banned but are okay with more restrictions, and are turned off by the GOP on gays and abortion and religion. These were the people who voted for Bill, and have often voted Democratic by default since then, but are about as thrilled with their party now as Republican moderates are with their own. The challenge for both nominees will be pulling them in and getting them to vote, while keeping their bases energized. At that point the question comes down to the quality of the candidate.

I think "a sense of personal connection" matters a great deal for the black community when they support a candidate, much more so than it does for white liberals, who are much more ideologically driven in who they support.

Blacks are, in essence, Southerners. Southerners are always distrustful of Northeasterners, especially New Englanders. They see them as unfriendly, charmless & arrogant. The fact that they're often ethnics with "funny names" & strange religions (e.g. Bernie -- Jewish, Dukkakis -- Greek Orthodox)doesn't help either.

HRC has her support among blacks because of the years her husband, a southern boy of great charm & political ability, invested in building support in that community (e.g. putting his offices in Harlem after his presidency). She could have never built those bridges herself.

We've seen something like the Bernie phenomenon before in Paul Tsongas, another New Englander outsider who caught fire with the white wing of the Democratic Party but failed because he could make no inroads with the minority communities in the Party.

Bernie's lack of connection with blacks isn't just about him "giving them stuff". It's about "they just aren't that 'in' to him".

Here is what I find interesting.

When Clinton left office, there was a huge scandal. Well, many scandals, actually. The Bush administration moved in and quickly forgot everything. The country needs to move on!

By the time Bush left office, any scandals he was involved in had already been resolved by the DOJ.

What will happen when Obama leaves office if say, Cruz becomes the next President? What if the Obama DOJ continues to refuse to prosecute all the way through the next election. Will they do something really quick, between Nov and Jan, before Cruz or someone is inaugurated? So they can then be pardoned by Obama?

Or will the next admin just let it all drop, like was done in the past, so the country can move on?

Ugh, I hope not.

I think the Marc Rich pardon deserved some investigation, and at the very least Clinton needs to be grilled on it--does she agree with Bill's pardon? If not, why did she not say anything at the time (she was sworn in as a Senator at that point)?

"HRC has her support among blacks because of the years her husband, a southern boy of great charm & political ability, invested in building support in that community (e.g. putting his offices in Harlem after his presidency). She could have never built those bridges herself."

I suppose--but that suggests a very cheap and transparent way for the GOP to win over the black vote. Spend time in their churches, open offices in their neighborhoods! The fear of Sanders makes more sense. The black community is one of the few places in America where anti-Semitism is still fashionable.

Only if it protects themselves. I don't see Obama doing anything just to help the Clintons, who he has no love for and if anything sees them as damaging to his party and competition with him for the Democrats' hearts and minds. If his DOJ has a good case against her--and no splatter on him--and he lets it go forward, he gets "statesman" points for letting justice be served, party be damned.

Well, this is part of the problem. Obama exchanged emails with her and therefore knew she wasn't using her government email address. It's now being reported that other administration officials were also using private email addresses to avoid FOIA requests. If he allows her to be indicted, it will end up in his lap sooner or later.

Do you expect Russian or Chinese Intelligence to admit to doing so to a New York Times reporter? She had Top Secret information on an unsecured email server on a publicly accessible network. The only safe assumption is that she was compromised.

She, against Federal regulations, set herself up a private email server. There is no record that she ever used a regulation State Department secured account. It's clear that she had classified information of the most sensitive kind on that unsecured server, so sensitive the State Department can't even discuss what it concerned. That means that her staffers repeatedly & deliberately moved classified information from the "air-gapped" secure network at State to her private server, stripping out the classifications codes as they did so.

There are so many felonies here & so many people are involved it's hard to keep count.

Face it, Freder, the reason HRC isn't in the dock facing charges is because the administration & the press know that to prosecute Hillary or her staff essentially means the destruction of the Democratic Party, & they don't have the integrity to fuck over their meal ticket. They wouldn't turn on Hillary if she was sending people to extermination camps, & you know it.

Michael K said...

No, that is not what the intelligence community is saying. They are very angry at what she did, but are constrained by their own oaths of security.

But the State Department's own inspector general has sided with the intelligence community, joining its watchdog late last month in referring the matter to the Justice Department for further review.

The FBI is presently investigating the private email network Clinton used during her time at State.

We don't know what the FBI will do but I think Comey, the Director, is a pretty straight shooter. We'll see.
